The dates for the rescheduled 2020 event are the 5 – 12 October. The event is taking place online only with a programme of virtual studios, online workshops and also some non-contact window exhibitions.

Welcome to the rescheduled Spring Fling Open Studios 2020! We are celebrating our 18th year, so please join us for another unique arts and crafts open studio event, celebrating our stunning region of Dumfries and Galloway. This year’s event is taking place later than the usual May weekend and under different circumstances due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We are committed to supporting the artists and makers that take part in the event since so many of them have lost exhibitions, trade fairs, commissions and usual work, like many small businesses. Upland has therefore worked hard to support the studios with some activity in May and now with the delivery of a rescheduled event, albeit in a different and smaller format. The rescheduled event has gone digital with a wide range of studios showcasing everything from painting, printmaking and jewellery to sculpture, glass, textiles and much more via our brand new virtual studios. Not only will this make the event more accessible, but it also gives us the opportunity to present videos from the studios and recreate the ‘studio feel’ on the Spring Fling website. Here you can find out how work is made and even buy work!
Beyond the virtual event, we are launching Looking In, a brand new series of non-digital, non-contact window exhibitions across the region which will allow people to see work without visiting a studio or going online. Venues include The Look Out in Langholm, The Whitehouse Gallery in Kirkcudbright and Number 11 in Wigtown, as well as a few smaller locations across the region. Some studios were planning to open, however, due to the rising concerns for COVID-19, Upland CIC have decided to make the rescheduled event online only. Therefore, any studios that may still be planning to open will be doing so off their own back as they would do throughout the year. Check out their business websites and social media for information on this. As you can imagine, this wasn’t an easy decision for the organisation to make but we have a responsibility to our region as well as the event’s creative community. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our funders and supporters who have helped make this year’s event possible, especially during such unprecedented times: Dumfries and Galloway Council, Creative Scotland, the Barfil Trust, The Holywood Trust, our dedicated board, staff and our Friends. Spring Fling is a regional event that actively encourages thousands of visitors to and from Dumfries & Galloway to travel from studio to studio across our vast region. As a result, we believe it is our responsibility to protect our rural communities and residents and therefore we have decided to make the event online only. An alternative printing process demonstration, specifically focusing on cyanotypes.
Over 4 daily Facebook Live sessions, Kim will demonstrate 3 different kinds of photography, giving explanations, tips, techniques and setting a daily challenge.
Cyanotypes are a beginner friendly way to photographically print from home with limited equipment. Join Izzy for this unique workshop, here on the Spring Fling website for this year’s Spring Fling. The workshop will be available here online from the 5-12 October.
The workshops will go out live each evening at 8pm (UK time) from Thursday 8th October to Sunday 11th October. During the rescheduled event we will be uploading recordings of the sessions on the website. So if you can’t make the live session or Facebook isn’t for you, the workshops will be available on the website until the 12th October and till the end of October for Friends of Spring Fling.

LOOKING IN We are delighted to present a brand new series non-digital, non-contact window exhibitions across the region which will allow people to see work without visiting a studio or going online. It is more important than ever to make Spring Fling as accessible as possible and engage with as many audiences as possible. We hope these exhibitions will attract people out and about and also cater to those who don’t do digital. The exhibitions bring together artists and makers taking part in Spring Fling Open Studios and some key venues across the region. We are delighted to be working with OutPost Arts, The Whitehouse Gallery and Wigtown Festival Company.

Spotlight on Food & Drink This spotlight features a handful of food and drink providers from across Dumfries and Galloway that are doing something special this Spring Fling. Station House Cookery School, Station House Cookery School is thrilled to be part of Spring Fling 2020. The Cookery School is a unique experience in Dumfries and Galloway. Developed in the beautiful train station buildings in the picturesque fishing town of Kirkcudbright, Nick and the team offer a wide range of cookery classes for all ages and tastes delivered by passionate and knowledgeable tutors. Emerge Izzy Leach
Emerge is a programme of mentoring with a bursary of £1,000 for early career artists and makers with a connection to Dumfries & Galloway. This year, we have awarded three Emerge bursaries which will see each recipient paired up with an experienced Upland artist or maker. As well as creating new work and taking part in Spring Fling, the recipients will also benefit from go & see trips and networking opportunities. Now in its ninth year, the programme is becoming a key part of the infrastructure for our next generation of artists and makers in Dumfries & Galloway. Two of the 2020 Emerge Bursaries are funded by The Holywood Trust (specifically for artists and makers 30 years and under) and one Emerge Bursary is funded by Creative Scotland (for an emerging artist or maker of any age).

As a trained fine artist, I chose to move from paint to fibre sixteen years ago to add depth in my explorations of colour, texture and form. My vibrant and considered artworks are in sympathy with the natural beauty of the land/seascapes in Dumfries & Galloway. I am increasingly drawn to the study of water, and light. This has resulted in a series of abstract and semi-abstract paintings exploring the contrasts of calm, still waters with violent storms expressing an inner landscape of turbulent emotions with moods of more reflective stillness.
I’m a printmaker and wildlife artist, also making prints of Scottish landscapes. My work is accessible and bold and my subject matter is familiar to everyone! I make etchings, woodcuts, linocuts and other kinds of print using two beautiful presses which you’ll see in use.

I’m a painter inspired by nature, beauty and mystery. Whilst my paintings are landscape based, my use of fluid acrylics allows for a strong element of abstract play and happy accident and more intuitive expression.
Working on moorland and hill ground in the Machars on a daily basis, I am inspired to sketch and paint in oils the landscape around me. Ever changing colours and the composition of my environment is what initially captures my imagination, with detail being secondary.

My work is principally concerned with the Galloway landscape, although I do paint still life when the weather is unsympathetic. I work from sketchbooks, developing and re-structuring my ideas into finished paintings in oils.
Primarily a printmaker, I apply my designs to textile and book forms. An increasing awareness of my carbon footprint as an artist has recently encouraged me to explore the possibilities of creating my own papers, printing inks, pigments and brushes using locally foraged resources.

I am a textile artist specialising in hats and headwear. My work is a continuous experiment, designing unusual, innovative, unique, original pieces of wearable sculpture. All handwoven. The designs extend from the extraordinary and eccentric to a modern take on the traditional beret.
I am at the very beginning of my practice, having recently finished renovating my studio. I am in the process of developing my creative practice and range of wares; and invite you along to come and see some of that experimentation and development in process.

I paint still life and landscape direct from nature. Living in Dumfries and Galloway, I am influenced by the artists who loved this area in the past, including the Glasgow Boys. My work is in the Scottish contemporary style with an emphasis on form and colour.
My jewellery is inspired by structural organic forms, exploring how they can be layered and connected adding intricate levels of detail. As well as a more commercial collection of wearable jewellery, this year I am currently focusing on one off statement pieces.

Since moving to Twynholm in 2018, the landscape of Dumfries & Galloway has become my main subject. My work reflects a deep love and connection with the rural environment around me. Colour, strong loose marks and essence of place are what I strive to achieve.
I make creative and elegant handmade jewellery in a mix of silver, gold and precious stones. There are two aspects to my work. One aspect is influenced by plants and organic forms to create complimentary collections. The other is working to clients’ wishes, creating commissions.

I am a mixed media textile artist using fabrics, papers, paint and dyes with free machine stitch to create pictures. My recent work is inspired by old letters, exploring the fragility of information from the past. My work is influenced by landscape and especially trees.

I use photography to explore pattern, detail and texture in the natural and human-made environment. My subjects are often things that many people overlook. I want my work to show others how I see the world.

The desire to create and the act of making has kept me occupied for more than twenty years. I take natural materials like willow, larch, hazel and birch twigs and transform them into sculptures and wall pieces, developing my ideas through the manipulation of the materials.
My abstract work is always focused on texture, light and mark making. Using oils with cold wax medium, my painting technique has loosened up, all the better to realise these key qualities. And with a greater sense of expressive freedom, ideas bubble up and grow.

I paint from on site sketches and photographs, with a dollop of imagination thrown in. Generally, I use charcoal lines overlaid with dilute acrylic pigment. This year I’ve been inspired by some New England views, particularly the boats and colourful wooden lobster buoys.
I use laminated wood veneers to make wooden mobiles. I’m often inspired by a poem, but the pieces change as I make them. I enjoy hinting at shapes and combining images; flames become feathers, birds become fish parts. The movement is also a vital consideration.
When you can visit my studio, you can expect: Original paintings, prints and cards will be for sale. I usually have on show montages of photographs illustrating how some of the works progressed from the original sketch through the various layers of painting, right up to the finished work.

I work with humour. My small scale sculptures are multimedia works with wordplay or pun as the title. My works have been described as 3D cartoons.
I collect leaves and flowers from my garden and wild places which I press and use to create unique collages, reflecting the beauty and vulnerability of the natural world. I will be working on some new leafworks using material collected from the Isle of Coll.

Currently my work focuses on trees and tree bark in particular the Australian Scribbly Gum. Influenced by colour, texture, pattern and balance I work mainly in mixed media and monoprinting in a loose, abstract style. I also have a growing interest in indigo dyeing.
Living and working on the edge of Galloway Forest Park I am surrounded by trees, mountains, wildlife and weather. Its colours, textures and shifting light are reflected in my work with fabrics, which I dye, paint, sew and machine embroider.

I am an artist and printmaker. My work is based on drawing. I enjoy working outside capturing the Galloway countryside across the seasons. I focus on smaller details in the landscape, hedgerows and gardens and also the broader patterns created by hillsides, trees and fields.

I work with glass powders and sheet glass, creating 3D vessel forms using gravity. I have pursued this method exclusively for the past 14 years and still find new ways to explore the properties of mass, heat, time and gravity to create new works.
I work in precious metals. I find weaving tiny stitches in silver thread absorbing, and working in gold is a delight. Making rings, articulated brooches and well-balanced necklaces is satisfying and fun, but ultimately the results must be unique, functional, comfortable and well-finished.

I am a multidisciplinary artist and illustrator. I have just moved up to Dalbeattie from Portsmouth and love it. My most recent work deals with psychedelic and surreal paintings. The artwork is a vivid exploration of colour and imagination, with a vibrant, fantasy style aesthetic.
I work primarily with warm glass techniques with many kiln formed processes. I draw my inspiration from Scottish landscapes, colours and textures within nature and the changing seasons. I strive to push the boundaries of this fascinating three-dimensional medium.

I make work in both stoneware and porcelain, richly decorated using a range of motifs distilled from the observation of the natural world. I make contemporary ceramic vessels which are decorated using a variety of techniques, building up layers of imagery and pattern to create visually interesting surfaces. The pieces tell stories, acting as evidence of moments in time, from landmark events to the more personal.
My continuing fascination with light has caused me to venture away from dappled woodlands towards our glorious coastline. Working with a limited palette, my paintings of sand, sea and sky depict both subtle and dramatic changes caused by our famous Scottish weather(s)!

Using a variety of clays I explore form, texture and surface with hand-building and the wheel. Inspired by Lucie Rie’s Korean moon jar at the British Museum, I’ve been coiling large spherical forms and enhancing the surface with smoke firing creating lunar-like surfaces.
My approach to printmaking highlights the way that process can lead and expand into other media. I capture snapshots of the wider environment in Dumfries & Galloway and beyond. Integral to my creative process is colour as content explored with both analogue and digital techniques.

I’m a conceptual artist, filmmaker and model maker. Sometimes the models are small and to scale, more recently I’ve been re-modelling neglected buildings (and caravans). I am a landscape painter. I am looking to create a harmony of colour and shape particularly inspired by the local verges. I work in a loose style in acrylic paint. I am also exploring the theme of “verge” at Leith School of Art this year and will exhibit artworks from my course.
I make jewellery inspired by heirlooms and the stories they tell. The Catkin Collection draws on a design seen on an antique ring long ago and is made by layering sometimes hundreds of tiny discs to make a pattern reminiscent of the Spring catkin flower.

Working mainly with resin I create pieces which combine a bold colour palette with pattern. Some pieces have magnets, the bangles will stick to each other and create bangle stacks. Other pieces are reversible, mismatch is also a strong element within my work.
Using a unique synthesis of hand crafted materials I create constructed textile pieces which represent an abstract interpretation of Scotland’s coastal landscape. I print onto fabrics using a variety of methods, create details using felt and ceramic then construct with machine and hand embroidery.

My art is mainly abstract expressionism and portraiture. I am fascinated with people and document my life story through art. I work mainly on large canvas with acrylic paint often using thick layers of paint to create depth of feelings.
I design and make furniture using local Scottish hardwoods wherever possible as well as reclaimed timbers and have been developing my style recently to incorporate stained glass panels, epoxy resin and metalwork.

I make violins by hand, using a combination of age old craft and new technology. I focus on optimising sound quality and producing a beautiful finish for each instrument and the rich golden varnish I make from local ingredients, is a distinguishing feature of my violins.
I am a painter and printmaker. Current work is a response to the Peak District landscape and mesolithic and neolithic archaeological sites and the influence of shamanic cultures on people. I incorporate both the seen landscape and the unseen “sense of place” into my work.

Smell the local propolis and pine resins mixed to make varnish. Hear the violins. Musicians are welcome to come and play throughout the day.

The world of textiles is dominated by two main weaves. As a trained textile designer I enjoy using the multitude of other weave structures along with the physicality of handloom weaving. I weave sustainable wool and linen which I make into utilitarian products.
I specialise in contemporary wooden furniture, creating your very own cherished heirloom– perhaps from your own timber, bog oak, or other native wood. Each piece of furniture art has its own narrative. I will also have limited edition and exhibition pieces displayed and to purchase.
When you can visit my studio, you can expect: In the setting of a working yarn store, I will over the event, hope to show all aspect of handloom weaving with bookable have-a-go workshops for all ages on contemporary tapestry looms with the opportunity to purchase my distinctive woven wears.

I’m a potter making both thrown and hand built work. My pots have quite a graphic quality and drawing directly onto them means each one is completely unique. I have two quite different ranges inspired by both native wild plants and geometric, mid century pattern. When you can visit my studio, you can expect: I decorate using the technique of sgraffito; each piece is coated in a contrasting coloured clay and the design is scratched through to reveal the white clay body. I intend to demonstrate this technique throughout the weekend so visitors can see work-inprogress.

I am principally a printmaker. My prints are made in small editions that are genuinely limited by the hand crafted processes of their making. Working mainly in linocut and screenprint, I try to take my own approach to traditional, mainly wildlife subjects.
Each new painting is a genuine challenge, I strive to move forward and not simply repeat a successful formula. My work is an accumulation of memories of places, weather and light conditions. The challenge is to convey those memories and emotions with paint on canvas.
When you can visit my studio, you can expect: I will be showing my recently completed prints and the different stages of creating an original print. As well as demonstrating printmaking techniques, I will also encourage visitors to get ‘hands on’ and pull a print themselves to take away on the day.

Upland Projects Upland is a bold, ambitious, rurally-based visual art, design and craft development organisation that evolved from Spring Fling CIC and was established in 2015. Spring Fling Open Studios continues as Upland’s flagship event but we now offer a year round programme delivering a range of projects, events and exhibitions working with young people, emerging and established artists and makers. As the visual arts and craft development organisation for Dumfries & Galloway, Upland

aims to provide a network for learning and sharing, offering advice and support to creative practitioners whilst aiming to inspire and educate a wide range of audiences to participate in and be supportive of visual arts and crafts. We work to connect the artists and makers based in Dumfries & Galloway to new audiences through our ongoing exhibition programme and continue to develop links with schools throughout the region by taking our artists and makers into the classroom to inspire the next generation.
Current projects: Although our projects have had to be postponed or adapted due to Covid-19 we are continuing to offer support and opportunities for artists, makers and young people in the region. Our bursary and mentoring scheme, Emerge, continues this year with three recipients taking part in the rescheduled Spring Fling event (see page 10 for details). The Modern Makers programme continues to provide opportunities for young people to work with a professional maker to learn craft skills, with young people undertaking 1:1 workshops with renowned glass artist Amanda Simmons. This year also sees the delivery of the second Artful Migration residency, developed in partnership with Ginnie Wollaston and Nicholas Parton Philip of Moving Souls Dance, which offers artists a unique insight into the migratory birds of Dumfries & Galloway through partnership working with local nature reserves. For Artful Migration 2020-21, environmental video artist and filmmaker John Wallace will be creating work based on the behaviour of the ospreys at the National Trust for Scotland’s Kelton Mains site at Threave Estate in Castle Douglas. And our Making Connections project, although postponed, will creatively explore with the heritage and history of Langholm’s textile industry. With artists, Deirdre Nelson, Morag Macpherson, Emma Dove and Mark Lyken exploring local archives and working with the community where possible.
