Welcome

This year we are celebrating our 20th event and we are delighted you are joining us. Not only is this the 20th open studios to take place but we are celebrating with a return to our much-loved format of actually opening studio doors! The event will take place over four days instead of the usual three, and at the slightly later dates of 2 - 5 June, to coincide with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. We hope visitors will enjoy having an extra day to visit as many studios as they can across the long weekend.

Joanna Jones Assistant Director, Upland CIC

We are pleased to have 96 studios taking part, spanning our vast region from Drummore in the west, through Kirkcudbright and Dumfries, to Langholm in the east – with lots more in between! All studios are open for the full 4 days and you can be assured of a warm welcome! Please check the studio pages, whether in this brochure or on the website, for additional COVID-19 information, as some studios may have specific guidance. In addition to our amazing studios, we have two exhibitions celebrating our milestone year. One is at Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries, a long-term supporter of the event; and the other is outwith the region at The Biscuit Factory in Newcastle, showcasing works by Upland members who have taken part in the event over the years. Both exhibitions open in May and run through into July. Three new commissions have been developed to celebrate our 20th event. These see Emma Varley and Ruth Elizabeth Jones collaborating to produce new experimental work; a Spring Fling film by Colin Tennant; and an exclusive milestone-year product by Sarah Stewart. See pages 8 & 9 for details.

This year's cover design is by Italian contemporary artist Tellas, who was one of the international participants in 2016’s Spring Fling Rural Mural. You can learn more about the project and its longer-term impacts at a special online presentation by Amy Whiten of Recoat on Thursday 5 May (see p14). Tellas uses various techniques, including large-format painting in public spaces, drawing, graphics, audio-video and installations, and has public art works in various Italian cities and others around the globe. We are so pleased to work with him again for this 20th event brochure. We are delighted to produce the brochure again with partners Alba Printers. Here you will find out about all our participating studios, and additional activities like bus tours and evening openings. We hope you enjoy seeing all that the event has to offer and start planning your visit! With special thanks to our funders and supporters who have helped make this year’s event possible: Dumfries & Galloway Council, Creative Scotland, the Barfil Trust, the Holywood Trust, our dedicated board, staff and our Friends. Most importantly, we would like to thank our event participants, both new and returning, for all their hard work in helping us pull the event together and for supporting the event through this unusual period. Without them, Spring Fling would not exist. On behalf of everyone at Upland, we hope you enjoy Spring Fling 2022.

Commissions

Upland is excited to present three commissions for the 2022 Spring Fling: a bursary to create new, experimental work; a specially commissioned film; and a design commission to create a unique milestone product which will be for sale as part of the event.

8

Spring Fling Open Studios 2-5 June 2022

Creative Bursary Ruth Elizabeth Jones & Emma Varley

Film Commission Colin Tennant

Design Commission Sarah Stewart

The Creative Bursary supports artists and makers to develop and present new work at Spring Fling which enables experimentation and risk taking. It aims to create space for work which may not fit within the traditional realm of an 'open studio' setting.

We have commissioned D&G-based photographer and filmmaker Colin Tennant to produce a short film for this year’s event to mark and celebrate Spring Fling’s 20th year. Recognising the importance and impact of the event on the region and its creative practitioners, Colin will create a short film which will reflect the original premise of Spring Fling, including sharing artists’ processes and getting ‘behind the closed doors’ of studios.

To mark the 20th event of Spring Fling Open Studios, we have commissioned printmaker Sarah Stewart to create a limited edition set of prints commemorating the event.

The Bursary has been awarded to Ruth Elizabeth Jones & Emma Varley, who will be presenting Earthlight at Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries during Spring Fling 2022. Earthlight (series) is a collaborative temporal installation combining ceramics with projected digital drawings, exploring tradition and technology whilst evoking feminine forms. Find out more about Ruth Elizabeth Jones and Emma Varley’s individual practices later in the brochure on pages 58 & 59. You can also find out about the bursary online at

Colin has been connected to Spring Fling for 13 years, assisting with the development and delivery of the event. Additionally, for the last 10 years, he has been the festival's principal photographer. Colin’s film can be viewed at Gracefield Arts Centre from 28 May until 2 July. Find out more here: www.spring-fling.co.uk/film-commission

Sarah is based in Wigtown and works primarily with relief and silkscreen printing processes. She creates contemporary prints inspired by the past, by the thrown-away and the pre-loved, by ghost writings and by objects which were once treasured. Pursuing the theme ‘The Maker's Toolkit’, Sarah will create a very limited edition (only 20 prints) portraying the variety of tools used by our artists. The two-colour halftone prints, each in a different colourway, will feature 20 tools to represent 20 years of the event. Find out more about this and how you can get your hands on one of these unique creations by visiting the Spring Fling website: www.spring-fling.co.uk/design-commission

Emerge Mentoring Programme

Joshua Williams

Emerge is a programme of mentoring and a bursary of £1,000 for early career artists or makers, working in any visual art or craft medium, who have a strong connection to Dumfries & Galloway. This year we have awarded two Emerge bursaries which will see each recipient receive mentoring from an experienced Upland artist or maker. As well as creating new work and taking part in Spring Fling, the recipients will also benefit from go & see trips, networking and training opportunities.

Joshua Williams

Savannah Crosby

Emerge aims to provide support which will enable the participants to develop both creatively and professionally, providing a stepping stone between education or employment and a career in the arts. One of this year’s bursaries is specifically for an emerging artist or maker aged 30 years and under, which is supported by The Holywood Trust. The second bursary is for an emerging artist or maker of any age, which is supported by Creative Scotland. Emerge recipients for 2022 are: Joshua Williams (studio 15, page 25) Savannah Crosby (studio 11, page 23)

Modern Makers Exhibition An exhibition celebrating the Modern Makers programme. Modern Makers is a programme for a small group of young people from Dumfries & Galloway to work intensively with a professional maker to learn craft skills. Developed from Modern Heritage Craft which ran in 2014 and 2015, the programme has seen young people learn skills in shoe making, furniture building, glass, jewellery and more. From 2016 the programme developed and expanded, enabling young people to spend up to 30 days working with established makers, gaining hands-on skills alongside a unique insight into how an artist/maker functions in today’s social and economic environment.

12

Spring Fling Open Studios 2-5 June 2022

The exhibition was originally planned to take place in 2020, marking the fifth year of the Modern Makers expanded programme, however it had to be rescheduled. We are delighted to present an updated exhibition which will now include the 2021 and 2022 cohorts. The exhibition takes a look back at the programme’s origins with a focus on the last six years, showcasing work from both participants and lead makers – Sam Booth, Fitch & McAndrew, Alex Rigg, Pamela Grace, Hugh Bryden, Colin Blanchard, Amanda Simmons, Lisa Rothwell-Young and Mark Zygadlo.

Digital There are many ways to connect, interact, and keep in the loop with all things Spring Fling. This year, we’re continuing with our online Virtual Studios which we launched during the pandemic. And we are again promoting the use of What3Words to help you find studios.

Online Event Artist Talk with Amy Whiten (Recoat) Thurs 5th May, 7pm

WEBSITE

WHAT3WORDS

Check out the websites for everything you need to know about Spring Fling, our artists and Upland’s year-round activities.

We’re encouraging visitors to use What3Words – the most accurate method of locating the studios ever! It’s an app and web-based system that splits the world up into 3m squares. Each of these squares has a unique 3-word name assigned to it. Type the 3 words into the app or the What3Words website and you will get a location pin-pointed.

Here you will also find our Virtual Studios – a look behind the scenes of the creative process to complement the live tour, or to give you a glimpse of any studios you’re not able to visit in person. Also via the website you’ll find the Spring Fling shop – for exclusive offers, gift vouchers, bus tour tickets and more. www.spring-fling.co.uk www.weareupland.com

We list the unique 3 words that will lead you to each of the Spring Fling studios in their brochure entries. Visit the What3Words website at: www.what3words.com to find out more about using the app and the web-based version.

Spring Fling Rural Mural (2014-16) was a hugely successful project, led by urban art specialists, Recoat, creating large-scale murals across the region. The scheme paired mural artists (local and international) with artists working in other media, and the impact has continued to resonate. Amy will reflect on the experience; but also look at what some of the artists are doing now and the legacy of the project. For full details and bookings see the Spring Fling website.

I work in the medium of fibre and silks creating felted and stitched paintings which explore colour, texture and form. My vibrant and considered artworks are in sympathy with the natural beauty of the land and seascapes of Dumfries & Galloway.

I am an artist working with wood. I have a deep connection to the natural world, especially woodlands and forests. I love to work with found, unseasoned wood, using a lathe to create a piece which I then enhance with detailed drawings using a hot wire.

What to expect: Visit my studio and gallery where I inspire people to create using the medium of felt making as a fine art form. There will be demonstrations each day across a spectrum of different techniques and visitors will have the opportunity to try felt making themselves.

What to expect: I will demonstrate woodturning, explaining the tools and techniques used, how I process the wood and end up with a piece that is suitable to be mounted onto the lathe. Visitors can browse finished work as well as try burning their own designs onto wood.

My paintings are rich with texture and vibrant colour, expressing a mood and abstract sense of place. The many moods of water influence my work, from the sea that I look out on every day to memories of my childhood in the Lake District.

Inspired by the birds-eye view of Port William Harbour and influences from Australian Indigenous Art, this series continues to develop. Familiar lines, structures and angles have been explored using space, pattern and colour. I’ve then, intuitively, applied layered, acrylic paints to both canvas and paper.

What to expect: Visitors will be warmly welcomed into my studio with its beautiful sea view where I will have sketchbooks, studies and art journals on display alongside finished paintings, affordable giclee prints and cards. I am always happy to discuss my processes, media and influences. £3 - £1,000

Annie’s Art House is a newly built space featuring Annie Butler's own work, alongside that of three other artists. Annie works in watercolour, pastel and ink, loving the speed, spontaneity and happy accidents of these materials. Her teenage daughter, Georgie, who has Down’s Syndrome, also delights in this landscape and produces vibrantly free pastel paintings. Ellie Goodare, a friend who walks and paints with Annie, works in oil and acrylic and produces dramatic versions of the same vistas. Rachel Lucas, another artist deeply involved with local projects, produces stunning textured and layered landscapes and bags using machine embroidery. Kirkcudbright Galleries is a regional art gallery of national significance. The Galleries opened in June 2018: a high quality, architect-designed venue, presenting the story of Kirkcudbright’s art heritage in an innovative and engaging way, alongside temporary historical and contemporary art exhibitions. This temporary exhibition programme is a vital component, ensuring that visitors and local people return to the gallery time and again, always seeing something new. Kirkcudbright Galleries is open all year and attracts around 50,000 visits per year. The site is run by Dumfries & Galloway Council Arts and Museums service, and also hosts the Kirkcudbright Galleries Café which is a local enterprise and has proven to be very popular. The core exhibition on permanent display is a celebration of Kirkcudbright Artists, an artists’ colony beginning in the late 19th century, consisting of works from the Dumfries & Galloway Council Recognised collection. Kirkcudbright’s history as an artistic centre is unique in Scotland and in Scottish Art as the only town where an artists’ community or ‘colony’ flourished for a long period. Current Temporary Exhibition Galloway Hoard: Viking-Age Treasure 9 October 2021 to 10 July 2022 The Galloway Hoard is one of the most important UK archaeological finds of the century: the richest collection of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever found in Britain or Ireland. This exhibition offers the first chance to see details hidden for over a thousand years, revealed by expert conservation, painstaking cleaning and cutting-edge research. The exhibition is in Gallery Two, and admission is free. Directions: Kirkcudbright Galleries is situated opposite the church and beside the bowling green. The main car park in Kirkcudbright is located in the Harbour Square, with the Galleries only a 5-minute walk away. what3words: ///watches.download.intersect 38

I make useful pots that are well crafted and a pleasure to use. Bowls, mugs, vases and jugs are the foundation of my practice, and provide infinite possibilities in exploring clarity of form and functionality. The decoration is quietly evocative of local land and seascapes.

I’m a creative, professional, portrait and narrative photographer, creating powerful images for individuals and businesses. Sometimes theatrical, sometimes cinematic, sometimes just observational. I use light, line and form to convey a sense of story – of something more going on than is immediately seen.

What to expect: As well as my finished pots, expect to see demonstrations and examples of work in various stages of production.

My abstract work focuses on texture, light and mark-making, striving to express conceptual themes. Working in mixed media, my painting technique has loosened, all the better to realise these key qualities. And with a greater sense of expressive freedom, ideas bubble up and grow.

I am a multi-disciplinary artist producing work that at its heart has a ‘Hero’. In my work the Hero is a theme, style, subject matter, idea or method. It should bring focus to a subject hopefully motivating us to create a personal connection.

I am essentially a landscape artist working outdoors when I can. Recently I have gradually been moving into abstract art. This progression is a huge learning curve, the use of colour and strong composition and mark making are the key. Most importantly letting the paint speak.

My still life paintings in oils/acrylics, are playful interpretations of everyday things. Colour/composition are my main expressive elements. Observations of single objects are developed by imagination, to create narratives. Landscapes are free and gestural and aim to capture the mood of place.

What to expect: Visitors will walk into a fully working studio, there will be paintings in various stages of completion. I will be working on pieces during the studio openings. Plenty to look at, plan chest open, full of sketches and failures! Always ready to chat and explain.

NEW STUDIO

I am interested in the connection between people, plants and places, and the study and painting of our local, native plants. Observing, listening and developing a reciprocal friendship with the plant and its environment. Paintings are complete when the image begins to dance and shows its spirit.

Objects infused with spirit, treasures from the past, unearthed, imperfect and marked by history are some of the things that inspire and excite me. I create in a playful, intuitive way, using the lost wax technique to transform gold, silver and gemstones into heirlooms of the future.

What to expect: My work for Spring Fling 2022 will be mainly botanical art. I will be showing a collection of watercolour paintings and graphite/coloured pencil drawings, both loose style and detailed cards. Giclee prints of the images will be available.

NEW STUDIO

My practice leads to creating work and spaces that incorporate a dialogue between the relationship of the tools at hand and the platform it is situated within. Exploring the culture’s relationship to its current state.

Hello, I am a ceramist and the technique I practise is referred to as slabbing. This involves rolling clay into pastry-like sheets which I emboss with plant foliage then fold into vessels of various kinds both functional and ornamental.

What to expect: Visitors can expect to see the space of a working contemporary artist and gain insights into my process from forming the final works to seeing works in progress from painting to digital installations.

What to expect: At my studio there is an opportunity to view my ceramics at their various stages of the process and also a chance to try your hand at creating a pot for yourself. Use your favourite plant to create a perfect impression on your own pot.
