Spring Fling 29 May - 6 June 2021 1
2 Spring Fling 29 May - 6 June 2021
Welcome to Spring Fling 2021! Thank you for picking up our digital event brochure! This year we aren’t printing our lovely brochures but instead, like many events trying to adapt, we have taken our programme online. It is now two years since we opened studios as part of our event, so we’d like to thank you all for sticking with us! No one could have imagined what the last year had in store or the devastation faced by so many during this pandemic. Upland is thankful to have such incredible members and supporters and is pleased to present an online event with some physical, socially distanced elements for our 19th year. Although we are not opening studios as part of the event, we are pleased to have 62 studios take part virtually spanning our vast region. You can view participants work in a number of ways – on the Spring Fling website via their Virtual Studio, our online exhibition We Wish You Were Here! or by physically visiting one of our Spring Fling Pop-UPs. We’re delighted to partner with the Mill on the Fleet at Gatehouse of Fleet and Ottersburn Gallery in Dumfries in order to present a physical way for audiences to see and buy work safely. In addition, we have a great programme of online and physical talks, workshops and demonstrations, featuring some of this year’s artists and makers alongside national creative organisations Craft Scotland and the Change to Society of Scottish Artists (SSA). The Upland Creative Commission with Katie Anderson invites you to see, hear and engage safely outside, more information on where and how to do this will be put out in advance of the event. So, please explore the website as there is lots going on. The event will go live on Saturday 29th May and close on Sunday 6th June. Friends of Spring Fling will enjoy an exclusive Private View on Friday 28th May – so sign up! With special thanks to our funders and supporters who have helped make this year’s event possible, Dumfries and Galloway Council, EventScotland, Creative Scotland, the Barfil Trust, the Holywood Trust, our dedicated board, staff and our Friends. Most importantly, we would like to thank our event participants, both new and returning, for all their hard work in helping us pull the event together and for supporting the event through this unusual period. Without them, Spring Fling would not exist. Next year we will celebrate 20 years of Spring Fling! We hope to invite you back to the studios to help us celebrate – save the date: Spring Fling Open Studios - 20th Anniversary: 2 – 5 June 2022 On behalf of everyone at Upland, we hope you enjoy Spring Fling 2021. Joanna Macaulay Assistant Director, Upland CIC
Spring Fling 29 May - 6 June 2021 1
Essential Information 2021 This year’s event is largely online with some smaller physical, socially distanced elements. No studios are physically open as part of Spring Fling this year. The event will run from Saturday 29th May until Sunday 6th June 2021.
Spring Fling 2021 will be largely online with an extensive digital programme open to all audiences. We are delighted to present Virtual Studios which will allow you to virtually “enter” over 60 studios right here on the website, with the aim of replicating the ‘studio’ as much as we can. These will go live with the launch of this year’s event. Many of our participating studios do open throughout the year by appointment so please check their own websites and social media for information on this. If they do happen to be open around these dates, this will be independent of the event. 2 Spring Fling 29 May - 6 June 2021
Accessibility This year, we have developed the event to make it more accessible and inclusive to audiences new and returning. Full information on this is detailed on the website, but this includes making virtual studios, easy read documents, subtitling Upland commissioned videos and adapting the website for the visually impaired. We know there is lots more we can do but we hope these steps make Spring Fling 2021 more accessible. If you have any questions or would like to discuss accessibility further, please get in touch: hello@weareupland.com
Attending Spring Fling 2021
From outside D&G?
Spring Fling 2021 is a smaller event which presents a range of online studios, exhibitions and events for national and international audiences. As well as this, we have two pop-ups in the region and some physical, socially distanced workshops – these elements are focused on local audiences. Although restrictions to and around the region are beginning to ease, we urge you to consider whether travelling to our region is essential. If you want to see or buy artwork, please visit our website to find out how.
If you are not from the region, never fear! There is still lots for you to see, do and engage with! This year’s programmed is designed mainly for you in fact. The only studios opening as part of this year’s event are Virtual Studios on the Spring Fling website, so you are not missing out. As well as these, we have our online exhibition and a series of online events that will showcase our artists and makers process and finished work, something they often don’t have a lot of time to do at a normal year’s event! More information throughout this brochure and on the website.
Local Audiences For our D&G residents, you can view or buy work at our Spring Fling Pop-UPs. These span two locations in Dumfries and Gatehouse of Fleet. Full information on page 6. We also have three outdoor workshops (p8) and the Upland Commission (p10).

29th May – 23rd June 2021 This year we are pleased to present an online exhibition as part of this year’s Spring Fling. Following on from the success of Upland Member’s exhibition, A Postcard from D&G, this exhibition celebrates our magnificent region and showcases work which can be safely delivered to the customer. Spring Fling Pop-UPs The Spring Fling Pop-UP is a way for local audiences to view and buy work from Spring Fling participants, as part of this year’s event. We were pleased to adapt and present online content last year but cannot deny that seeing work in the flesh, is really important. So, since we are unable to open studios, the pop-ups are a way to do this in a safe way. The Spring Fling Pop-UP’s will be open from Saturday 29th May until Sunday 6th June. Opening hours for both pop-up venues will be announced nearer to the event. For information on COVID guidance and visiting the Spring Fling Pop-UP, see page 3 of this brochure. Or visit the website for COVID guidance and venue accessibility information.

Upland Creative Commission
The Call by Katie Anderson
The Call is a roaming artwork initiating a form of call and response between two ‘sounders’ or performers. The work seeks to explore ideas of seeking and listening, exploring site by means of a repeating call or song, created from digitally manipulated demos of vocalists from Dumfries and Galloway. Audiences are invited to explore the site and interact with the work, investigating the audible sound-scape. The Call takes inspiration from bird and other animal calls, and also explores ideas of digital connectedness and ‘remoteness’, a playful take on our digital dependence through sound and small-scale sculptural objects as listening devices. Information on where to see The Call and when will be released on the lead up to the event. Visit www.spring-fling.co.uk/the-call Image of Katie – Galina Walls Image of artwork – Kirstin McEwan This commission was funded by Creative Scotland.

Artist Badges A key to the badges appearing on artists’ pages: SPRINGBACK Our Springback Scheme provides the opportunities for artists who have a connection to Dumfries and Galloway to take part in Spring Fling; many grew up in the region, and some have lived or worked in Dumfries and Galloway in recent years. NEIGHBOUR Our Neighbours Scheme was introduced in 2013 to strengthen our links with artists and makers from our neighbouring regions and allows a limited number of them to take part in Spring Fling in venues across the border from where they live and work. EMERGE With continued support from The Holywood Trust, the Archie Sutter Watt Trust and Creative Scotland, Emerge, awards a bursary and a period of mentoring to early career artists with a connection to Dumfries and Galloway. I make useful pots that are well crafted and a pleasure to use. Bowls, mugs, vases and jugs are the foundation of my practice and provide infinite possibilities in exploring clarity of form and functionality.
We make pots which are informed and inspired by the glorious tradition of British slipware. The pots that we make have echoes of these old pots but really speak with our own voices. We revel in the beauty of wet slip and all it’s potential.
The use of matt and shiny surfaces and subtle colour changes achieved through layering glazes and often multiple firings inspires me to explore and develop decoration quietly evocative of local land and seascapes.
Where to See & Buy Work: Our work is available to buy through our online shop on our website, Goldmark Gallery in Uppingham, Schaller Gallery in Michigan USA and Gallery St Ives in Tokyo Japan. When Covid regulations allow, we do accept socially distanced visitors by appointment to the workshop where we have a small shop space.
More recently, my work has evolved to incorporate masking techniques whilst exploring glaze textures in relation to heat, changing firing patterns and experimenting with more varied forms to affect how glazes behave. Where to See & Buy Work: My work can be purchased through my online shop at www.wemakepots.com/shop. I also post regular updates on Facebook and Instagram of new work for sale. I will be taking part in the Spring Fling Pop-UP and my studio will be open independently of the event so far as restrictions allow.

I continue to explore form, texture and surface with my thrown and coil-built clay vessels. Echoing shapes from the past, the work draws on prehistoric ceramic forms but also captures a contemporary feel creating unity of form and surface.
I have now been making pots for over fifty years, firstly as an apprentice and production potter then, after graduating from Edinburgh College of Art, working as an artist potter and academic.
I pursues the vessel as sculptural form, unleashing the foot, neck, lip and belly from their purely functional constraints. Surfaces are textured, glazed or marked by smoke-firing – the process of trapping carbon to create distinct tonal effects and qualities. Where to See & Buy Work: Please go to my website to browse work and buy directly from my online shop: ruthelizabethjones.com - my work can be purchased online via the Spring Fling online exhibition. Please visit my website for more information about how to visit my studio out with this event. For all other enquiries, please contact me directly using the information below.
During my career I have had the opportunity to lecture, demonstrate and exhibit in many great institutions and countries around the world but since retiring from Glasgow School of Art I have devoted all my time to working from my home and studio in New Abbey. Where to See & Buy Work: My work can also be viewed and purchased from the SF Pop-UP and online exhibition. My studio is normally open by appointment (subject to current guidelines) and anyone interested should contact me and I will be happy to arrange an appointment to meet you.

I am a potter/maker focusing on wheel-thrown ceramics. I tend to use white earthen-ware clay and produce simple, functional pieces. I love the thought of having carefully made, unique and useful items on a kitchen table or around the home. Something that is handled and treasured. I am a ceramicist part-time and work full time for the family business in Ayr. I studied Three-Dimensional design at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen and once I graduated I moved back to the West Coast. I have always been surrounded by the sea and this acts as a source of inspiration for my work. I have established a firm methodology of travelling to a range of beaches to take samples of rock textures and forms. I am interested in the textures and shapes that rocks can produce and use these to create plaster moulds. Where to See & Buy Work: Thank you for your interest in buying my work. My work can be viewed and purchased directly on my website and online shop, OR my work can be purchased physically at the SF Pop-Up Shop. ALAN J BROCKBANK T: 07542 186 850 W: www.alanjbrockbank.co.uk E: ajbrockbankart@btinternet.com alanbrockbank Art-by-Alan-J-Brockbank @ajbncle
I established my studio practice in 2016 after a long career in a completely unrelated field. I work with glass in varying ways, but mostly fused glass (including slump, drape and drop in translucent and opaque) and kiln-carved, casting, including shallow cast. I have also worked with architectural glass, screen printing and enameling. It is the nature of glass itself that is the key motivation for me: the transition from solid to liquid state and back again, capturing the free flow of glass through air, and exploiting the reactive properties of certain types and colours of glass and chemical reaction produced by inclusions. Where to See & Buy Work: Information about buying work is available on my website or through the contact or social media details provided here. My work can be purchased during Spring Fling via the Spring Fling online exhibition or at the Spring Fling Pop-UP. Although this year my studio cannot be open as part of Spring Fling 2021, please see the links and contact information here for more details as to how it may be possible to visit my studio out with this event.

I am an illustrator, designer and contemporary printmaker. I use pens, pencils, inks, crayons, paints and digital tools to create texture-rich illustrations and designs. Inspiration for my work comes from my direct experiences of nature and more often than not an idea starts from my field sketchbooks. I have spent most of my life living within three miles of the sea and it’s this longterm salty companion, along with nature, boats, drawing and picture books, that really fires me up and gets me going.

I am a goldsmith making bespoke and production pieces in my own unique style. My Catkin Collection draws on a pattern seen long ago on an antique ring. I build up the design by soldering sometimes hundreds of tiny discs in place to create a fish scale pattern.
I work in silver, gold and gemstones to create highly individual pieces of jewellery. My style has evolved over the years and increasingly I find delight and pleasure when working with stones of colour. I often mix sterling silver with gold as I find they complement each other especially when set with a vibrant sapphire or a deep green tsavorite.

Working mainly with resin I create pieces which combine a bold colour palette with pattern, some pieces have magnets, the bangles will stick to each other and create bangle stacks. Other pieces are reversible, mismatch is also a strong element within my work.

My main interest is in representing people in an urban environment. Using traditional painting techniques I explore compositional possibilities, often to convey a sense of personal awareness and our detachment in public spaces. With many works, an onlooker may have a feeling of introspection and perhaps frozen time. The paintings invite the viewer to create their own narrative. Through painting and printing processes, my work engages closely with landscape. Neither abstract nor representational, it hovers somewhere in between. Abstract marks take on pictorial elements of landscapes and colours are often quiet, subtly suggesting distanced encounters with the land. My art reflects a sensitivity to composition and colour and can be seen as a natural complement to my 30 year career as a graphic designer. Freed from the constraints of digital layout, I have transferred my knowledge of colour, balance and form to raw materials.
My work is principally concerned with the Galloway landscape, although I do paint still life when the weather is unsympathetic. I work from sketchbooks, developing and re-structuring my ideas into finished paintings in oils.
I take inspiration from the changing light, textures, colours and forms of my surrounding landscape and my paintings reveal my own interpretation and experience.
Where to See & Buy Work: Head to my website to find out about my latest work and exhibitions.
My paintings tend to evolve through a layered process revealing underlying subtle colours and textures which allows the painting to develop in often unexpected and contrasting directions finishing in a semi abstract work. Where to See & Buy Work: My work can be viewed and purchased from our website: www.falustudios.com and, if guidelines permit, our gallery at Falu Studios will be open for visitors. I am interested in drawing and painting subjects that familiarity has perhaps made us take for granted. Derelict or purely functional subject matter are also recurring themes. Recently my work has been influenced by fellow Kirkcudbright artist Charles Oppenheimer.
I am a classically trained artist working mainly in oils and pastels. I studied at London Fine Art Studios in Battersea and have lived and worked in Dumfries and Galloway for five years. My work is figurative, mainly still life, flowers and landscape inspired by the local area and wildlife. I work direct from nature whenever possible and love to work outdoors.

Painting still life is perfect for lockdown.
My practice revolves around looking for energies, like atmospheric changes, movement of clouds and water. It has been striking that while the human world’s activities were held in temporary suspension we all became aware of a much gentler movement around the earth. Being already on track to develop a more observational path, life drawing, I joined an online regular study group. It turned out to be a life saver, absorbing and fascinating with a natural progression. Slowly I am pulling the brushwork together with line and accuracy. This is now my practice and it feels complete. I look forward to working with others and real life models but have appreciated the space and time to be still and pay attention.
Objects in my home and studio, usually with memories attached to people and places, provide my starting points. Flowers are also a constant source of beauty and beginnings. I often combine these with views to the outside - places I have been, or long to be. With landscapes - on the spot sketches in charcoal or ink, and some photos give me the beginnings. I develop these in the studio through the process of interaction with the materials and gestural expression. Imagination and invention suggest colour to create mood and atmosphere. Where to See & Buy Work: Thank you for your interest in buying my work. Please go to my website www.bellagreen.co.uk where you will find small paintings, art classes, polymer clay jewellery and artist cards for sale. Everyday walks through local woods and along shorelines give me source material for my work. The effect of light on a scene particularly interests me and capturing that on canvas is an aspiration, be it dappled woodland light or sunlight bouncing on water.
The starting point for my work is to gather material into small sketchbooks (11 cms. x 15. cms) which, for me, helps to keep things simple and to the point. If a particular area interests me I will move on to larger sketch books and may use paint, or any other material, to make interesting marks. Back in the studio I will work from these images to try and explore the feel of a place. Risk taking plays a big part in my practice, if you’re not taking risks new paths will not develop.
I work mostly in my home studio and usually in acrylics, which particularly suit my technique. Of late I have started to combine a love of textiles in my work, producing more abstract and textured paintings. Where to See & Buy Work: My work can be purchased directly from my website and also through Facebook and Instagram stores. Current work is a response to the Covid19 lockdown and also the peak district landscape and mesolithic and neolithic archaeological sites and the influence of shamanic cultures on people. I incorporate both the seen landscape and the unseen “sense of place” into my work.
Exploring the countryside and coastline around me is a preoccupation and inspiration - never failing to refresh the spirits. I love to paint what I see, highlighting colours and aspects that appeal and draw me in, trying to communicate these to the onlooker with the uplifting feeling experienced by being outdoors. I work “alla prima”, very quickly at first, to get the broad composition in place - with a minimal sketch onto the canvas. My subjects include mountains, often from high up on edges or watching cloud shadows moving across the hillsides - in Cumbria and Scotland and principally seascapes from Galloway and from the Islands and highlands. I enjoy catching the light and the change of seasons, moods dramatic or serene.

We artists can’t fix climate warming, but art can speak about the things that matter: for example, the above painting came from plastic waste on a Tiree beach, and the mark-making in it is filled with the anxiety of caring. I work with the concerns and beauty of northerliness - I’m in Finland at the moment - and am strongly influenced by Nan Shepherd and her radical new ways of engaging with landscape, from a feminist perspective. I believe that art’s job is to reach out to the emotions when bare facts threaten to overwhelm us – or, as Bill McKibben puts it, ‘What the warming world needs now is art, sweet art’.
I’m a visual artist, writer, musician, performer and co-creator of award winning arts-based education programs, who believes in the transformative power of the arts and loves working with people to unleash creative potential. Art is how I make sense of the world. It’s also about communication. I am always amazed at the power of colour, line, words and sounds to express profound human emotions. Layers of technology and endless everyday demands may separate us from a sense of wonder and oneness, but my art practice is contemplative and allows me to connect deeply with whatever subject I choose to study.

In my work I strive for a sense of being in the landscape. My bold and direct style retains energy and freshness with the layers of the land reminiscent of the layers of my life. My work begins with digital images taken from the world around me – found images of surfaces, textures, colours, sometime much as I found them but often “taken for a walk”. I will also be taking part in Open Studios Ayrshire in September 2021 - Google it.
It is the landscape that surrounds my home, here in Eskdalemuir that inspires me. Daily walks up forest tracks in to the hills above the valley inform my practice. Compositions develop out of a combination of thumbnail sketches in pencil and graphite I make when out walking, photos and memory. Walking allows me to notice the small things; birds insects, moss, stones lichens, changing colours of leaves, berries. Also how the weather and seasons impact on the views. I can always find inspiring colour even on the bleakest of days. Looking out from above the valley, I contemplate how the landscape makes me feel. My work represents a combination of all these things. Where to See & Buy Work: Thank you for your interest in buying my work! I’m a creative, professional, portrait and narrative photographer, and for over a decade I have been creating powerful images for individuals and businesses. Sometimes theatrical, sometimes cinematic, sometimes just observational, I use light, line and form to convey a sense of story - of something more going on than is immediately seen. However, with the changed world of Covid-19, the online aspect of my practice has become dominant. I now do a live weekly video podcast and am developing a membership platform for anyone who is looking to improve their photography skills.
I use photography to explore pattern, detail and texture in the natural and human-made environment by observing things that people often overlook. I want my work to show others how I see the world. Almost all my work is opportunistic. I am always on the look-out for subjects to photograph and I always have a camera with me.
Where to See & Buy Work: My work can be viewed on my Instagram account, or my website where you can also contact me with enquiries for photo shoots or tuition.

My paintings and prints generally start as sketches made in the open air – or occasionally from windows, as I assess the world around me looking for details and patterns that catch my eye. Sometimes these are small in scale, hedgerows, chimney pots and roadside verges and sometimes the flow of the wider landscape itself inspires me. My creative career commenced in textile design, having trained at the Scottish College of Textiles in Galashiels but my focus on detail and pattern and love of drawing developed into printmaking. I am always intrigued by the unpredictable twists and turns of the journey when developing an idea from sketchbook drawings through the various technical processes of creating the metal plate ready to be inked up and run through the press.
I work with linocut, woodcut and lithography, inspired by the countryside where I live along with the gorgeous gardens and beautiful landscapes I see on my travels in Ireland and Britain. I print on Irish linen and I make hand stitched collages of my linocuts and woodcuts. I am a designer and printmaker based in Wigtown. Specialising in relief and silkscreen printing processes, my work is inspired by the past, thrown away and preloved - objects which were once treasured or had purpose but since been discarded and no longer needed. I hope to find the beauty in these objects and the pasts we’ve left behind and produce contemporary prints, textiles and book forms that engage with the modern viewer.
My approach to printmaking highlights the way that process can lead and expand into other media. I capture snapshots of the wider environment in Dumfries & Galloway and beyond. Integral to my creative process is colour as content explored with both analogue and digital techniques.

NEW STUDIO
Spring Fling marks the first exhibition of my work in Scotland, including both abstract and representational pieces. A new Scottish artist working between Galloway and Cumbria, my favourite port in a creative storm is fine art printmaking but I also experiment with sculpture, glass and other media.
MELTINGPOT PAINTINGS, PHOTOGRAPHY, PRINTMAKING & POTTERY
Influenced by journeys and human-environment connections, my print editions are exploratory, thoughtful and conceptual, frequently rooted in wild landscapes. Place, space and identity are recurring themes. Human touchpoints with the more mysterious elements of our wilderness hold a special kind of appeal. Where to See & Buy Work: You can see new pieces and work in progress on my Instagram and website. My prints are at the Spring Fling Pop-Up (Gatehouse of Fleet), the online exhibition and my own website. I take commissions, particularly appropriate for lovers of the outdoors. If you are visiting the Lake District - not far from here - you can call for a studio visit or find selected pieces at The Bridge Gallery (Cockermouth) and The Makers Mill (Keswick).

Using a wonderful synthesis of hand-crafted materials, I create intricate constructed textile pieces inspired by Scotland’s Coastal Landscape and Birdlife.
I am inspired by the landscape around me and aim to capture the mood of being here, recording details in sketchbooks outdoors. Later in the studio I use fabric and stitch to develop themes.
Textiles for me have always been an important element of my artistic expression and how I interpret the coastal landscape.
I continue to make work that is about change: the movement of the tide, the textures and colours of water, mud, rocks and sand. I also have pieces this year that explore themes of entangled or enclosed.
Where to See & Buy Work: My work can be viewed and purchased from the SF Pop-Up Shop, the SF Online Gallery and through my online shop.
My work is made with fabrics and papers, adding colour and then stitching with my sewing machine. My stitching is often done quickly to develop rhythm in the marks. Where to See & Buy Work: My work can be bought online via the Spring Fling online exhibition or in person at the SF Pop-UP (link to SF Pop-UP page). You are very welcome to contact me directly about pieces or to visit my online shop (www.etsy.com/uk/shop/AlisonCorfieldStudio) to make a purchase. I am in the PA pop-up Artists and Makers Cooperative, visit the shops in Kirkcudbright or Gatehouse to see more of my work.

I create hand tufted wool pile textiles as artful, practical furnishings for walls, floors and upholstery. I like the idea of my work inviting connection with true nature in a deeper way by inviting people to relax, reflect, rejuvenate through use of mindfulness/ meditation mats, stools and art rugs.
My work is very much influenced by the natural world: birds, animals, plants, trees and the changing seasons and weather. I am lucky to live on the edge of Galloway Forest Park, where I am surrounded by by trees and fields and can watch the shifting light on distant hills.
Where to See & Buy Work: My work is available to buy through my website https://www.rugaura.com/rug-shop and people are welcome to contact me with any queries whatsoever. I hope to be part of the Pop-Up and if people are allowed to visit my studio to see my work in person, all the better.
I believe the process of making something has to feel right - I don’t like to having to fiddle around and bodge something just to get to a preconceived end result. When I’m working on a new design, I will be thinking about the visual source, the materials and the method of making, all alongside each other. To me, they have equal importance. Where to See & Buy Work: If you are interested in buying my work, please go to the shop section of my website www.jogallant.co.uk for cushions and scarves. Ive been creating artwork for surface patterns for over 15 years. I was previously a graphic artist, but my love for textiles took over. I create hand-drawn illustrations, abstract mark making in paint and more recently ive been experimenting with natural printmaking techniques such as eco-printing, shibori, indigo and natural dyeing. Everything I create is either worn on the body or adorned in the home. From digital to dye, I explore the wide and wonderful world of print for textiles.
I have always been interested in the concept of good design in contemporary living and attempt to create a continuous collection of unusual and distinctive textile hats and headwear of universal appeal.

So, what is stopping you? NEW STUDIO
I am a designer/maker working with printed textiles. Back in 2008, I began producing a small range of hand printed home accessories which over the years has evolved to include unique one-off wall canvases as well as more commercial products, such as cushions, small decorative items and lampshades. My products are created using a mixture of techniques comprising screen printing, hand cut stencils, free-hand painting and are embellished with hand/machine stitching to add more colour and textural interest. My inspiration comes predominately from nature — from a walk in the countryside, a memory or just using what’s around me at home, such as much loved houseplants and objects collected during walks.

My practice explores my relationship with the natural environment and how I make sense of the world. Using my own grown willow and other local woods I create wall sculptures and 3D pieces that allow the subtleties of the materials to reveal themselves. Where to See & Buy Work: I am not able to open my studio during the event but please visit my website www.lizziefarey.co.uk for ongoing information. If you are interested in discussing a possible commission I am always happy to provide a quote and begin communication with a view to adding you to my schedule.
I specialise in commissioned contemporary furniture - functional pieces of art from local hardwoods. Each is unique, handcrafted by me from start to finish, and combine traditional, modern and innovative techniques. Whilst producing mainly bespoke client commissions, I also create affordable ‘limited edition’ furniture, and pieces for display and sale at exhibitions. My work can be viewed on my Instagram account, or my website where you can also contact me with enquiries. I’m taking part in the Spring Fling Pop-UP too. Once Covid guidance allows you’ll be able to make an appointment to visit my Langholm studio. Thank you for your interest! NEW STUDIO
I have lived in Galloway now for 30 years and a while ago I left my huge woodworking workshop in Kirkcudbright, and built a one-person sized workshop at home near Mossdale, on the edge of the Galloway Forest Park. Lockdown allowed me the freedom to just try out a few ideas I have had in the back of my mind and in sketch books, as there was no living to be earned for the duration. I was pleased to return to highly coloured work, this time by hand painting, and started many forays into detailed ornamentation.
I’m drawn to images of metamorphosis and ambiguity. Very often I’m inspired by the imagery of a poem. I love to suggest shapes and connections rather than making them explicit. A shape can be a flame and a feather or a bird can be a part of a fish. Where to See & Buy Work: Some work can be viewed and bought from the SF Pop-up. I also have some work in The Whitehouse Gallery in Kirkcudbright. I’m also happy to sell directly.
Where to See & Buy Work: Although I sell my items through the Whitehouse Gallery in Kirkcudbright, please feel free to contact me direct if you want to discuss something. Work will also be available via the Spring Fling Pop-UP.

Artful Migration
Modern Makers
Making Connections is a new Upland project which aims to enable artists and makers to explore and highlight Langholm’s rich history and heritage in textile manufacture. Working with local organisations, OutPost Arts and The Langholm Initiative, Making Connections consists of two artist residencies and a schools project.
Artful Migration is a residency programme being developed by Upland in partnership with Moving Souls Dance, offering artists a unique insight into the migratory birds of Dumfries & Galloway through partnership working with local nature reserves.
Modern Makers is a programme which allows a small group of young people to learn craft skills from established makers.
The residencies are currently being undertaken by D&G based artist Emma Dove and Glasgow based maker Deirdre Nelson under the banner ‘Langholm Made’. The schools project has already been delivered by Kirkcudbright-based textile artist Morag Macpherson. For Langholm Made, artist and filmmaker Emma Dove is collecting stories and memories of the weaving industry in Langholm in order to create a series of recorded conversations. Alongside Emma, maker Deirdre Nelson is exploring and celebrating making in Langholm in its widest sense, inviting local people to share what they have been making both within studios and at home. Examples could include baking, cooking, knitting, woodwork or fly tying – anything ‘Langholm Made’ is welcome! Work created as a result of the project will be showcased in Langholm in June this year. For more information or to get involved visit the Upland website. 66 Spring Fling 29 May - 6 June 2021
The current artist-in-residence is environmental video artist and filmmaker John Wallace, who is creating new work based around the seasonal presence, and absence, of the ospreys at Kelton Mains, Threave Nature Reserve (which is part of National Trust for Scotland’s Threave Garden & Estate, Castle Douglas). An exhibition of the work produced will take place at NTS Threave in August 2021. Image courtesy of John Wallace.
In this year’s programme, four young people from D&G are working with jeweller Lisa Rothwell-Young, learning how to make jewellery from beginner level, right through to stone setting and mount making and gain an insight into running a creative business. Lisa creates jewellery which is ethical, sustainable and fairtrade – an important part of her making ethos which she is sharing with the group. To date the group have been undertaking online tutorials and making (at home) with tool kits which have been posted out to each participant – we can’t wait to see what they are making!
