Good afternoon, and welcome to today’s NWCFL Premier Division match between Squires Gate and Wythenshawe Town. A warm welcome to our visitors and the Thetravellingfans.gamesdon’t get much easier do they? What a good side Wythenshawe are, and no doubt they’ll be around the top of the table come the end of the season. They will no doubt prove a really tough test for us this afternoon, but we’re scared of nobody at all, and we’re confident we canwin this game. We showed our quality and what we can do in Tuesday’s narrow defeat to Bury AFC. Leading 1 0 at half time, we played them off the park at times and were deservedly in front. Bury’s quality off the bench changed the game and we fell to a really unfortunate 2 1 defeat. We showed what a really good footballing side we are and gota lotof praise. This gives us a lot of confidence goinginto today’s match. We’re also on the back of two home wins on the bounce, including last Saturday’s 2-1 victory in the FA Vase against Easington Colliery AFC. After a low start, we got ourselves level and scored a last minute winner. It wasn't pretty at times but a win is a win in a cup competition, and we progress into the next round of the FA Vase. We’ll be facing West Allotment Celtic away in the next round, it’s a long journey but we hope to see you there getting behind the lads like you do so Awell.big thank you to everyone for attending today’s game. We’ve got another home game on Wednesday against Ashton Athletic so we hope to see you there Enjoytoo!thegame! #WeAreGate

Continuing to recognise those at the very heart of Squires Gate FC, our cover star this week is the legend, Albert Cooper. Those associated with the football club, and even those who aren't will recognise Albert as being a very important figure off the pitch. Before he handed the reigns over to Ian in 2020, the club could not have progressed as well as it did without his continuousefforts. When I first joined the club back in 2013, Albert was photographer and programme editor and his love for the club was inspiring. He always had time for a chat, and the stories he told of his historic pictures was amazing. He passed the programme duties on to me and Jay in 2015, and has always been complimentary of the work we have produced he'd always make a joke "picture by accident" if we missed the by line on his photos. But I hope that in the latter years of programme editing he approves of the current standard of the Squires Gate Asprogramme.youall know, me Jay and James are taking Squires Gate into a new era in terms of media and programme editing, but the whole background to this seasons front covers is to are today. "Creating new memories. Respecting our past" was the key motto for our campaign. Albert is one of those people and will always be a club Currentlegend. Gate photographer Ian officially took over from Albert last season. “Back to summer 2020, I was speaking to the gaffer about my interest in sports photography and immediately he said that I need to come to Gate and meet Albert. So at a pre season game against Garstang above all else a friend. He has already forgotten what I have learned in my two years taking pics at Gate. But he has been so supportive and generous in his time and feedback I cannot thank him enough. Taking over from Albert was like Moyes following Fergie, but my Fergie has supported me from day one. Thanks Albert, still a way to go but I’ve already lasted longer thanMoyes did!”

MS: After bowing out of the FA Cup early, I have high expectations for the league campaign.

We have won all of our games so far and our aim is Top 6 as always, but play offs is highly anticipated with the squad that we have. On behalf of all our fans, we are definitely hoping for a long run in the FA Vase like last season, where we reached the last 8 However, we have got strong opposition this season, for example, Bury AFC. But all our fans are awaiting our trip to the Isle of Man on the last day of the season. A popular chant is "We're winning the league at the Isle of Man". That will be an amazing accomplishment for us. KB: I know they’re going to get promoted and hopefully have a great run in the Vase again. Looking forward for them to play Bury and for Isle of Man I speak for all the fans as well, we can’t wait to go there. Who is the one to watch for Gate fans today?

I've never been to Squires Gate before but I have driven past the area in Blackpool. I can't wait for the game. Up the Town! KB: The fans had a great day and said everyone was very friendly, @kendallbeckett is my TikTok with all towns matches and great goals. BECKETT

MS: You're telling me to pick one! You've given me a very difficult decision. From day 1, I've always said Darius Palma is too good for this league. to Town and we won 2 nil. If I remember Max Leonard put us in front before half time. Last season, we travelled throughout the North of England in the Vase, beating Consett. If I had to pick my favourite game 've been to. It would be Wythy vs Consett. They were the cup favourites, it was 1 nil to Consett. We scored. We had hope. The Wythy Faithful got behind the team and on the 90th minute, Darius Palma with is magic hat pulled out a goal and sent us to the next round. The coach had never been so loud. Your all time 5 a side Wythenshawe squad? MS: Morgan Bacon (GK), Jerome Wright (CB), Max Leonard (CB), Steven Hewitt (CM/CAM) , Darius Palma (ST), Matty Bryan (substitute)

I have lived in Wythenshawe all my life and wanted to experience the non league football vibe. The first game I went was back in 2019, against West Didsbury and Chorlton. I loved it. 2 years later, I decided to start supporting them and following them on their non league journey. I've never looked back. Never regretted a single second. Sharing coaches with the players, meeting new people, it's been a blast to say the least. I've been collecting match programmes for every game I go to, travelling to long away games in the FA Vase. What a community club! KB: Dom had an injury so I just started to go and watch with him and just loved the fans, team especially den and cill the kit man and his wife. What are your expectations for the new season and what new clubs are you looking forward to playing?

First of all, why Wythenshawe ? What encouraged you to start supporting the MS:club?

This has continued to develop down the years with websites, apps and publications alldedicated to Groundhopping, with certain leagues now creating special weekends of games so that Groundhoppers can attend, such as that for the North West Counties Football League in March Companies2022.too have got in on the act, with https:// footballweekends.co.uk/ offering football breaks alongside their highlysuccessful magazine. Tart, Trams and Tuk Tuks by Steven Penny centres on one of Football Weekendstripsthattookplacein February 2022 in and around the Portuguesecapital, Lisbon, with Penny and his sonattending five games in their four-night break.

This consisted of two Primeira Liga (Portugal’s Premier League) fixtures, Belenenses v Paco Ferreira and Benfica v Vitoria Guimaraes, two Liga 3 (Portugal’s third level i.e. League One in England) games, Alverca v Torreense and Amora v Caldas as well as a Liga Revelacao U23 (an U23 league competition) Play off fixture between Estoril and Leixoes.

“So how did this slightly eccentric hobby develop and grow? Back in the 1950s and earlier there is no evidence that Groundhopping existed. Football fans tended to be loyal to one club or one city. In Edinburgh, for example, many people would watch both Hearts and Hibs at home at a time when both produced sparkling football and enjoyed success. Travelling support for away games tended to be small in number. From the 1960s onwards, as car ownership became more widespread, more fans were likely to travel to away games. The developing motorway system meant that travel, either by car or supporters bus, was quicker and easier. Without realising it many football fans began to pick up ‘ticks’.

A FOOTBALLLISBONWEEKEND

Penny takes readers through the break in diary form on a day to day basis, with the events of each day detailed, whether this be attending games or taking in some sightseeing. Despite its small number of pages, this is a useful read for those yet to embark on a trip watching the game abroad at whatever level and who maybe considering a football weekend away. In addition to Penny’s descriptions and brief (and interesting history) about the clubs he visited, it well served by various photographs from the trip and additionally there is a useful Appendix which provides information for those looking to visit the Lisbon area. A more than useful guide which offers a personal viewpoint in addition to information available online.

In my early days of watching football back in the 1970s, I wasn’t aware that Groundhopping was a ‘thing’ so I’m grateful to the backgroundhelpsissitewww.nonleaguematters.co.ukforumforthefollowingwhichpartiallyreproducedbelowandtoprovidesometoitsorigins.

Groundhopping: a hobby that involves attending matches at as many different stadiums or grounds as possible. Participants areknownasGroundhoppers.

By the 1970s a few real enthusiasts were emerging who were the proto-hoppers, travellingfar and wide both within and beyond the UK to visit new grounds. In 1964 a letter appeared in the ‘Football League Review’ magazine, from a Bristol City fan, suggesting that a special tie be produced for those who had seen football on all 92 FootballLeague grounds. This idea coalesced into the formation of the 92 Club in 1978. At that time the membership of the Football League was fairly stable. Clubs only dropped out through the re-election process so, having “done the 92” it was straightforward to keep it up to date.”

How do you usually prepare your weekly content? Do you plan ahead? Do you have a specific layoutfor yourweek?

We do have a layout that we follow before each game usuallyconsisting of some kind of hype video a few days before, to a couple of short snippets of the stadium, fans coming in, players warming up, and then after the game we try to put some of the action out assoonaswecan.

Iin2017/18.started volunteering for Edinburgh City FC, filming all the matches for analysis and highlights.Ithen got aparttime role at Youth Football Scotland filming youth matches which then turned into a full time role asaVideographyManager.

Thenopponents.onmatchday we produce a few teaser style videos of the stadium, fans arriving, players warming up, just general build up. We are also going to be doing more than just this in the future as we are conscious of not getting too comfortable producing the same stuff every week. How do you prepare for games, and how do you ensure everythingruns smoothly?

MEDIA DIARIES // JORDAN ALLAN // HEARTS

MEDIA DIARIES JORDAN ALLAN

Weheadnorthofthe borderfor this week’s edition of Media Diaries as our Social Media Manager Dan Hayden spoke to Jordan Allan from Hearts, to get an insight behind the scenes of the Scottish Premiershipclub. First of all, thank you for your time, it really is appreciated. Could you tell us a bit about yourself, your role at the club and have you worked at any clubs previously? So I'm from Edinburgh and I've been a Hearts fan my whole life. It feels like a dream come true now that I'm actually workingforthem andproducing Icontentfortheclub.alwaysknewIwanted to do some form of film or video in my life but only decided to go down the football media route

Whenever there's a gap in games we try and fill our time capturing content at training and putting it out midweek. We are also keen to change things up regularly to keep our contentfresh. Building up to a matchday, what do you do to build excitement with supporters and to gauge interactions? Could you give us a brief rundown of your matchday routine? We usually try to make a hype video that goes out a day before, which is basically a montage of the action from previous meetings with the

I arrive usually 3 hours before kickoff to ensure I've got enough time to get all of the build up content complete. My time is split pretty much 50/50 between filming around the stadium and editing in the media suite. After the matches I usually stay behind an hour or so to get interviews with manager/player and edit a few bits and pieces to go out that night or the following Imorning.suppose the only way of preparing would be to triple check batteries are charged and to have something warm and waterproof with you atalltimes! One important part of matchdays is the “footy scran”, have you any favourite grounds in terms of hospitality and what is your go to choice ofmatchdayfood?

MEDIA DIARIES // JORDAN ALLAN // HEARTS

I like my scotch and macaroni pies which are always free to media at half time at Tynecastle which is pretty sweet. We're still yet to be given kebab pies which I've seen fans eating before. I can't waitfor thatdayto come. Another important part of the matchday routine is a programme. What makes a good programme to you, and which clubs do you think have the best programmes? In terms of social media. What do you think makes a good club socialmedia account? Idon'thaveanyinvolvementwith the programme so notsure about that but with social media I think it's important to be regularly posting engaging and interesting content thatattracts interaction. As this is the Squires Gate programme, is there anything youknow aboutourclub? I don't actually sorry but I'll be sure todomyresearchafterthis! What would you say is your favourite social media platform touse attheclub? Cammy Devlin because he's always very open and honest and doesn't take himself too seriously, he alsolikes a laugh. Who has been your favourite player to interview at the club? Which grounds to you enjoy visiting the most in terms of facilities andmatchdayfood? Sticking with my team again here, HEARTS. Get yourself to Tynecastle and try a kebab pie. I actually went to the food counter at Celtic Park last week (they giveyou£10vouchersforfood) and I looked at the menu and I asked for a hot dog. “Sorry we don’t have any”. Okay no problem, I look at the menu again. Can I have a macaroni pie then? “No we don’t have any.” Right okay just anything, a scotch pie? “Yeah no problem.” And can I have a coffee too please. “No sorry our hot water isn’t working”. Terribleplace. Finally, what is your favourite memory within your time at the club? Since it's quite fresh in the mind I'd say my favourite memory was travelling to Switzerland with the team for our Europa League Qualifier a couple of weeks ago. Playing in Europe is massive deal to Hearts fans and it's been a while since we were last playing European football, so it felt incredible to get to travel with the team and create content throughout the trip. My only complaint was the price of beer over there, jeez! We've got a few more trips to Europe coming up too which will be amazing (and probably less expensive). I can't wait.

The travelling Gate fans were in superb voice, as we led 1 0 at the break. I stayed outside at half time with the others enjoying the Buryhospitality.showed their class in the second half to turn the game around and win 2 1. It was a shame, we played really well but there’s positives to takefor sure. Via a quick stop off at a McDonalds, we headed home. Fuelled by my Quarter Pounder meal and Mayo Chicken, I wrote up my match report when I got home before calling time on what was an enjoyableawayday!

Words byJames Ashton I’ll be documenting Tuesday’s away trip to Bury AFC this week, as Dan finishes up other parts of today’s programme. After a late finish at work the night before, I was eager to get back to football come Tuesday morning, and what an away trip to look forward to. We’ve hosted Bury AFC on a couple of occasions but we yet to travel to the Neuven Stadium (Also home of Radcliffe FC), to face Bury on the Withroad.Dan finishing work at 5 and traffic up the M6 looking busy, a change of plan was made and Jay picked me and Dan up from my house and set off straight from there, rather than driving to Dan’s first. With an ETA of 19.05, it was a bit of a rush but we enjoyed what turned out to be an Aseasyjourney.wesetoff slightly later than planned, the traffic had cleared up. Backed by my impeccable music choices some classic indie tunes and The 1975’s banging new track Happiness’ that you’ll hear on the matchday playlist today - we arrived before 7pmin good spirits. A quick pint was sunk before Dan met up with some of Bury’s media guys. Jay bought himself a burger, spending £4.50 in the process, while also grabbing someprogrammesforus to read. I was featured in the programme in a Q&A, so thanks to Chris from Buryforthat!

PROGRAMME

STADIUM FOOD & DRINK

RATING: 34.5/50

The Neuven Stadium is home of Radcliffe and Bury AFC. Radcliffe play two leagues higher so the expectation was always that it was going to be one of the best inthis league to visit. A score to reflect the price of a burger from the burger van. Jay bought a burger and said it was average for the price it cost, so me and James avoided buyingone. A very nice bar though with a good range of drinks but not enough to gain some extra points. Sorry, Bury! SCORE: 8/10 SCORE: 4.5/10

HOSPITALITY

SCORE: 8/10 SCORE: 8/10

After winning the award for programme of the year for the First Division North last season, we always knewBurywere going to provide tough competition this season. A 40 page full colour programme with plenty to read, so hats of to them. A steep price of 3 quid though knocksoff a coupleof points. We have built a good rapport with Bury through social media and as a media team we felt very welcome byJonnyandtheirmediateam. Anyclub thatprovides chips and mini sausage rolls for half time hospitality is a winner. An overall very friendlyclub behindthe scenes.

AWAY DAY

JOURNEY A slightly rushed journey to Bury, but overall an enjoyable one. There wasn’t too much to complain about intermsof trafficandJames’ music. The onlydownside was that it wasn’t a 3pm kick off and that we couldn’t make a day of it and instead there was a lot of rushingaround.
