HOUSING: Assisted Living

Questions Every Senior Living Community Should be Able to Answer When adding up the cost to live at home versus a community, senior living can be an affordable solution. Remember an assisted living and memory care community are not a nursing home or long-term care facility. They are a supportive environment for seniors looking for the “care” in carefree retirement living. With an ever-growing number of options, transitioning to a senior living community can be overwhelming. Here are some crucial questions to ask on your next community tour. What makes your community stand out from other communities? If the answer is “our care,” ask for specifics. It is important to understand the level of care. Excellent care is expected. Does the community have a management company? If so, how often do representatives visit the community? Having an involved management company is critical to the health of the community, staff members, and the maintenance of the building. Who plans the menus? How often are they changed? Are residents encouraged to make suggestions? If residents have menu input, ask for a specific example. Be sure to get a copy of a menu. Schedule a lunch and tour so you can see for yourself! How are activities planned? Do residents have input? Are activities meeting physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs? Whether you are seeking memory care, assisted living or independent living, ask for a copy of the latest calendar of activities and a newsletter. Talk to a resident. This is their community so they can provide insight and potentially be a new friend and neighbor. Ask for examples that residents have shared with management about how living in this community has improved their lives. Sponsored Sponsored by: by: See See ad ad on on page page 20
