Despite crippling education loans, students have revealed to 9News.com.au they didn’t know they could apply for help across a range of areas. VETERINARIAN What do they do? Veterinarians (Vets) are doctors of animal health. They prevent, diagnose and treat diseases and other health issues in animals. Working in small clinics, emergency and specialty hospitals, zoos and aquariums, wildlife parks, universities, research facilities, pet food and drug manufacturing companies, conservation and government organisations. Are you passionate about animals and committed to their welfare? Love the sciences, proactive and driven by emotional rewards rather than financial? Then you should definitely consider a career as a Vet. Duties:      

Examine, diagnose and treat sick and injured animals Carry out general check-ups and administer preventative treatments e.g. vaccinations Prescribe and administer animal medications Take cell and tissue samples Perform diagnostic tests Perform surgery on animals

Skills required:       

Passion for animals, their health and welfare Communication Empathy Organisational & time management Attention to detail and observational skills Technical skills – use of machinery and lab equipment, surgical knowledge, computer and other software Aptitude for science and an inquiring mind

Pathways: Complete an undergraduate or post graduate degree in veterinary science. Registration and Licensing is also required which includes testing and other requirements once education is completed. 5-7 years is generally how long it takes to complete required studies. Other courses in animal science can provide a pathway for further study in an accredited veterinary degree. Average salary $83,257 is the average salary for a Vet. YEAR 12 UNIVERITY INFORMATION 2019 UAC GUIDES These should arrive soon, hopefully by April. I will distribute them to all Year 12 students. The information is also on the UAC website, search under “Courses”. UAC PIN You will receive your UAC PIN by email in early April. You will need this to apply for uni. DON’T LOSE THIS! KEEP THE NUMBER SOMEWHERE YOU CAN FIND IT LATER (eg contacts in phone, print it out and put on the fridge). UAC APPLICATIONS FOR UNI These open on 3rd April, however you have until the end of September to apply without late fees. I will go through the process with students on Friday 12th April during Pastoral Care. EAS APPLICATIONS - FOR EDUCATION DISADVANTAGE You can apply for EAS AFTER you have applied for uni through UAC. You go to the UAC site and go to “Manage my application” and click on the EAS link at the top. Download the forms needed for your disadvantage category. See Ms Hakos for completion of the application. SRS APPLICATIONS You can apply for the Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS), AFTER you apply for uni through UAC. An email is sent to me to recommend you, offers made in November. The following unis participate in this scheme: Macquarie Uni, ACU, Western Sydney Uni. Some others (e.g. UTS, Sydney Uni) only accept applicants with financial disadvantage (EAS eligible). EARLY OFFERS TO UNI Notre Dame - Early Offer Applications open on 2nd April.
