JOB SPOTLIGHT: CONSTRUCTION If you love building, creating and working with your hands then a career in construction might be a good fit. Check out the Construction Bullseye from MyFuture here. PART 1- SURVEYOR From the Board of Surveying and Spatial Information of NSW – “A career in surveying can be very diverse and involves travelling and the use of specialised technology. Surveyors can be involved in making measurements in the outdoors or indoors processing data and creating plans and maps.” What does that mean? In a nutshell, surveyors measure and map things then provide the information to people like engineers, architects and developers. See the video – Working in Surveying You could work in the office or in the field, using high-tech equipment and sophisticated software to put together measurements that are needed by other design professionals. Without their work it would be impossible for engineers and architects to accurately design and construct buildings. Salary: from around $42k for an Assistant (Cert III level) to $64k for a Draftsperson with 5 years’ experience. University qualifications mean you could earn $90k plus as a Licensed/Registered Surveyor. Qualifications: From TAFE, start with a Cert III and work through to a Diploma to become a fully qualified draftsperson. You need a university degree to become a surveyor. Where do I start? Check out A Life Without Limits, they have fantastic information and a list of all the courses at TAFE and uni level in Australia. See the List of Courses in NSW/ACT

CONSTRUCTION - PART 2 - BRICKLAYER Bricklayers are in high demand, and if you love physical work and being outdoors then it could be the right path for you. Video - Top 10 Reasons to Become a Bricklayer Bricklayers work with different types of bricks and concrete blocks to build structures as part of the building process. The job is mostly outdoors, sometimes at heights, and like any other skill there’s more to it than meets the eye. You could find yourself working for a building company or another bricklayer, and you have the option to be your own boss once you’re qualified and call the shots. Salary: Qualified bricklayers can generally command above Award wages. While it varies from state to state, you could expect to earn a good wage, especially as brickies are in such high demand. Qualifications: You need an apprenticeship to become a certified bricklayer. Find out more here. Where do I start? The Brick and Blocklaying Training Foundation have a great suitability webpage – check it out here. If you think this sounds like you then look for a local apprenticeship (Google ‘Bricklaying apprenticeship’ and your location) or get in touch with your local TAFE. Prefer to work with stone? Stonemasons can do much of the same work as brickies, but they also do more decorative, heritage and restoration work. Find out more about being a stonemason here Ms G. Hakos Careers Adviser
