UNSW ENGINEERING WORK EXPERIENCE WEEK Michael Xeras (Year 10) was selected to participate in the UNSW Civil Engineering work experience week in June this year, during which he undertook many different engineering activities and site inspections at various locations. Here is his report followed by a couple of photos from the week.

Year 10 Work Experience – Michael Xeras “The UNSW School of Civil and Environmental Engineering in conjunction with its Industry Advisory Committee organised an annual work experience program to promote engineering career options to high school students. The program ran for five days in Week 9 of Term 2 and is available to Year 10 students across NSW, with students travelling from Coffs Harbour, Moree and Wollongong. The program allowed students to experience engineering

projects firsthand across six areas of the civil and environmental engineering field, which were: Coastal and Port Infrastructure, Structures and Design, Construction and Project Management, Water, Wastewater and Environment, Road, Transport and Underground, Surveying and Geospatial Engineering. Each day revolved around a specific area of engineering. Daily field trips were led by UNSW CVEN staff supported by engineering professionals to a range of engineering sites across Sydney, followed by an afternoon debrief and short report writing session at the UNSW Kensington campus. This opportunity gave me an insight of what engineering really is, and opened up my thoughts of what to choose for my year 12 subject selections. I would consider applying to any student who is interested in engineering. Other than that, it was a great week well spent.” WORK EXPERIENCE AT AIE Andrew Karaniki (Year 10) undertook some work experience at the Academy of Interactive Entertainment recently. Here is his account of his time there: “During the last week of July, I participated in a work experience program at the Australian Academy of Entertainment (AIE), where I was involved in different activities such as game development, programming, 3D animation and level design. I really enjoyed this opportunity and the experience has helped me to determine a career path in the game development industry.” VOCATIONAL EDUCATION (VET)/ TRADES/APPRENTICESHIPS NATIONAL SKILLS WEEK 27TH AUGUST TO 2ND SEPTEMBER 2018 VET is designed to provide you with the specific skills, knowledge and workplace experience to help you pursue a career within a defined industry. If you have a specific career in mind, you’d like to start earning straight away, or maybe you just don’t fancy going to University, then you might want to consider a VET course or an apprenticeship. National Skills Week is designed to break down barriers to VET courses - people tend to think that these courses and apprenticeships are really limited, but VET can provide entrance into most industries and careers, from trades, architecture, engineering and office work, to retail, hospitality and technology. Learn about the options available with VET, and discover your future career potential within different industries and occupations. “The fact is that VET qualifications lead to successful, meaningful, professional careers with great salaries and outstanding careers prospects.” The Hon. Karen Andrews – Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills THE FACTS ABOUT VET AND APPRENTICESHIPS Vocational Education and Training (VET) VET Courses are delivered by TAFEs and other Registered Training Organisers (RTO’s) – there are around 5,000 to choose from, check out the link above to find one near you and see what’s on offer. The benefits: They offer short courses covering most industries you can imagine (and probably a few more).

APPRENTICESHIPS Visit https://www.australianapprenticeships.gov.au/ to find out how you can earn while you learn, get workplace experience in addition to gaining new skills.
