CAREERS NEWS NEWSLETTER VOLUME XXXV Nº 32 CRN 24 th 14 September, 2018

APPLYING FOR UNIVERSITY Year 12 students have had the process for applying to university explained to them on Friday 24th August. UAC guides were also distributed, along with information about applying for EAS and SRS, Elite Athlete bonus points and scholarships. Below is a short summary for parents of some main points. Full details are available on the UAC site https://www.uac.edu.au/ and in the UAC guides. UAC processes applications for courses offered at participating universities** and higher education providers in NSW & the ACT (applications to the Australian Maritime College courses, including the Tasmania locations, apply through UAC). All the information you’ll need to know about courses, universities, applying to a University in NSW & the ACT and more, can be found at: https://www.uac.edu.au/ (**Note that Notre Dame University and Western Sydney University both accept DIRECT applications through their websites.- see below) Applications Applications for university courses starting in 2019 are open at UAC now. You should aim to complete your application to UAC by the 28th September 2018 to be eligible for early bird offers. Fees for applications submitted by Year 12’s before this date are $70. After this, the cost jumps to $200. The absolute last date you can apply and still be considered for the first main round of offers is by the 19th November 2018 to be included in the first round of offers in December.

1

Preferences You can choose up to FIVE preferences to list on your application. Preferences are the courses you would like to apply for. Listing five preferences maximises your chances of getting an offer. When choosing your preferences, it’s a good idea to list the one you really want first, the ones that are more realistic next, and a safe option. That way you’ll ensure that you get at least one offer at the end of each round. ATAR Results ATAR results will be issued / available to Year 12 students in NSW & ACT on the 14 th December 2018. Last date to change preferences Once you’ve received your ATAR, you may have done better than you expected, you might not have done as well as anticipated, or you may just have had a change of heart about which course to study or the University you would like to go to. If that’s the case, you can still change your preferences after receiving your ATAR. You’ll have to make sure that you change your preferences by midnight on the 16th December 2018, after that you won’t be able to alter your application before the first round of December offers. The dates of all offer rounds are published inside the front cover of the UAC guide (given to all Year 12 students in August). Offers Once you’ve submitted your final preferences and the cut-off window has passed, offer notifications for the main round, based on ATARs, will be sent on the 20 th December 2018. Accept all offers, then, after you do accept, remove that course from your preferences list. The most important offer rounds for Year 12 students are December Round 2 (Thursday 20 December 2018) and January Round 1 (Friday 11 January 2019), after ATARs are released. This is when most Year 12 applicants receive their offers. Some students have applied for early offers, so they may be notified before this date. SRS Students wishing to apply for the Schools Recommendation Scheme can apply through the UAC website. A list of participating institutions is available on the site. Successful students may receive an offer on 15th November. BONUS POINTS (ADJUSTMENT FACTORS) Elite Athlete Bonus Points Students wishing to apply for Elite Athlete Bonus points should access and complete the online application on the individual university websites. Educational Access Scheme (EAS) From this year, applications for EAS are done online within the student’s UAC application. Those wishing to apply for EAS are advised to see me as soon as possible if they haven’t

already done so, so that it can be explained and an Educational Impact Statement can be provided if necessary. Subject Bonus Points Bonus points for achieving high HSC results in relevant subjects are automatically awarded by universities, to increase a student’s selection rank. Check individual university websites for details about all adjustment factors. **DIRECT APPLICATIONS to University: Western Sydney University, Notre Dame University HSC True Reward at Western Sydney University Applications for the HSC True Reward Early Offer Program are now open.
