We congratulate the HSC Class 2012 on their results, which placed our School in the top 130 schools in the State. Our Distinguished Achievers are especially commended, together with our University Scholarship Winner, Kathy Thimakis. Some 80% of the class have received University course offers and we wish everyone of them every success, irrespective of their chosen post-school pathway. This promises to be a very busy Term, which incorporates the Annunciation Celebrations, the Senior School Twilight Tours and two external Expos. We encourage every parent to support our P & F in the very important role as Ambassadors and Fundraisers of our College. A warm invitation is extended to all to attend the P & F AGM on the 26th February, in the Junior School Library. Mrs Anna Stamoulis as P & F President together with last year’s Committee look forward to making you welcome. Mrs E. Stefanou-Haag

PROCEDURES Supervision Morning supervision commences at 8.15am. Parents are requested to leave the school grounds

students are to use the Playground Gates as their entry and exit points.
once supervision commences unless they have a scheduled meeting. Afternoon supervision concludes at 3.45pm after this time children will be placed in After School Care and parents billed accordingly.
TRAFFIC PROCEDURES Observance of the following school procedures will greatly assist in the safety of the students, and better relationships with our neighbours.
Infants children need to be collected from their classroom in the afternoon or from the Infants playground – shelter after 3.15pm. Primary children to be picked up from the Primary playground – undercroft area. Parents and children are to leave the courtyard area immediately so that teachers know which children are still under their supervision.
1. Parents MUST NOT park in any driveway either the neighbours or the college at any time. 2. The practice of parking or stopping in the middle of the road is illegal. 3. Please note that Doran St is a two way street and parking laws apply. 4. Attention is drawn to the extreme danger of leaving motors running while leaving the car to drop off or pick up students from the college, particularly when smaller children are left in the car. Please drop your child/children off in the morning and leave as soon as possible. Similarly in the afternoon after picking up your child please leave so that other parents have room to park.
Parents are requested not to assemble in front of classrooms in the afternoon- prior to pick up as this disrupts students learning. K-6 will assemble every Wednesday morning in the Primary Courtyard. Parents are invited to join with us in prayer and anthems but please do not talk during these proceedings. During this assembly Merit certificates are awarded.
HEALTH ISSUES ‘NO HAT, SIT IN THE SHADE’
AFTER SCHOOL CARE After School Care will be held in the Cottage on the Infants side. Infants children will remain in the Infants playground and Primary children will be crossed over.
Children are reminded to wear their hat when playing in the school grounds. Children without their hat will be required to sit in the shaded area (Undercroft in the Primary School and under the Shelter in the Infants playground). This is a school rule to protect our children’s health.
OFFICE HOURS Office hours for the Junior School are 8.15am to 4.15pm. For security reasons no one is permitted to enter the administration building before 8.15am and after 4.15pm unless they have a registered appointment. The Office Staff commence their tasks at 8.15am and end the day at 4.15pm, at which time the answer machine is activated. Please note that messages left after this time may not be heard until the next morning.
ALLERGIES / ANAPHYLACTIC REACTION POLICY You may be aware that a number of children at our college are at risk of having a severe allergic reaction to peanut products. This condition is known as Anaphylaxis and is a severe and sudden allergic reaction, which usually occurs after exposure to a particular food. Anaphylaxis is potentially life threatening and always requires an emergency response.
Parents are to please NOT go directly to the Teachers’ Staffroom to speak to a teacher, please refer to the secretaries who will call the teacher out to see you, if available. Parents are also not to go to classrooms at any time without signing in and getting a visitors badge at the front office.
In order to minimise the risk to those children in the school who have allergies, the school community has implemented a number of measures. Please do not send foods with peanut products in your child’s lunches or morning recess.
SMOKING IS NOT PERMITTED within the School’s boundaries.
Please also do not send cakes, lollies or any food to school to be given to other children. As the health, well being and safety of the children in our school is of paramount concern to us all, we know
Foyer (Gardeners Rd) entry is ONLY to be used if attending to business at the Office. Parents and

that we can depend on your support and assistance with this matter.
MEDICAL UPDATES PARENT HELPERS If your child is under the care of a medical specialist, you need to make this known to the school. Students with specific medical conditions such as Asthma, Anaphylaxis etc need to provide the school with an action plan.
Parental assistance is requested. If you have some free time and like covering books, we would appreciate your help. New readers have been purchase for classrooms and we would like to make them available to students as soon as possible. Please leave your details at the office if you are able to assist.
Medication kept at school needs to be current. Parents are requested to check this regularly and replace as needed.
KALANTA
Contact details of parents need to be updated also in case of emergency.
Thank you to all the parents and children who once again spread Christmas cheer to our parishioners in their home. Kαι του χρονου.

from the University of Sydney, advises parents to help their children strive to improve their own results or master new skills rather than focussing on ranking children against others. He emphasises the importance of acknowledging consistent and sustained effort children put into achieving their PB. This approach tends to keep students motivated because they are putting effort and are competing against themselves which are factors they can control.
ANNUAL SWIMMING CARNIVAL Years 3 – 6 will have their annual Swimming Carnival on Thursday 21st February. All students must attend and participate in at least one event. Please note that this is a school day and attendance is compulsory. Students will assemble at Des Renford Swimming Pool, Robey St, Maroubra at 8:30am for Roll Call. The carnival will begin punctually at 8.30am and conclude at 2:30pm. All students are to wear the College swimming costume, coloured T-Shirt and Coloured Cap.

Teachers are professionals, and their classroom may be likened to their office. Always make an appointment to discuss concerns and leave messages at the front office. Children learn at different rates, and some may veer from the path from time to time. Their work levels in Kindergarten will not necessarily dictate their success for the next 12 years.
WHAT EVERY PARENT SHOULD KNOW TO HELP THEIR KINDERGARTEN CHILDREN ENJOY SCHOOL.
The levels noted on the reading material sent home will often move too slowly for parents, but it doesn’t matter. Your child will learn to read.
Parents play a vital role in helping their children enjoy their educational journey. When schools and families work together children tend to achieve better results, enjoy school more, and tend to pursue education at higher levels.
Your job is never over, Dr Michael Carr Gregg advises establishing a ‘hub’ at home where parents and students can get together to go over homework and discuss the day’s activities. Remember your child will not be perfectly happy every day, but that is when you listen, guide and lead by example by reflecting on the best possible outcome from the situation.
Research indicates that when parents get involved in the school community children tend to fair better both academically and socially. So get involved with the P&F, attend regular assemblies when possible, help out with the canteen duties, or get involved in the many special events organised throughout the year.
Enjoy Kindergarten 2013! Mrs M Kipriotis Infants’ Coordinator
There is more to education than ranking children against NAPLAN results. Children should be encouraged to aim for their personal best, Professor A. Martin

FIRST PLACINGS Welcome to all, especially to all our new students and families who have joined us this year. Everyone should be well rested and ready to tackle the year ahead with gusto and enthusiasm! Our school offers students any opportunities those who are willing to have a go at doing something more, something different. Now is the perfect time to step out of comfort zones, take measured risks, step up to new challenges and strengthen the positives that already exists.

Thank You to all the Year 10 Peer Support Leaders who came in one day ahead of their year group on Day 1, to assist Year 7 on their first day at the Senior School, and also for the efficient way they have applied themselves to the task of escorting these younger members of our school to each of their classes every day. The contribution and efforts of Peer Support Leaders plays a very important role in the success of both the Transition and Leadership Development Programs undertaken at the Senior School.
PREFECTS 2013

This week students have been sent home with additional information related to their upcoming camp. Please read these carefully along with all previous documentation, especially about what to pack. It is advised that valuables such as mobile phones, ipods, hand held game devices etc not be brought to camp. Teachers will not be responsible for any loss or damage to such items.
PASTORAL CARE All Year Groups will begin the year with lessons based in Goal Setting and Study Skills. Having this focus enables students to move forward with clear objectives in mind and lays the foundation for the development of solid work habits, which will maximize student learning outcomes.
LEADERSHIP STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL
Next week Years 7-11 will take part in leadership lessons and SRC nominations will be taken. In week 5, nominees will have to present a 2 minute speech before their class peers, followed by a class vote. Two representatives will be selected to represent each class. The SRC meets every fortnight to discuss issues of concern to students, set goals and plan various events.

SPORTS
COLUM
Boys ISA Basketball The end of the ISA basketball season for the boys is fast approaching. Having just completed round 7 of the 10 round competition, the boys teams are preparing for the last three games, and for many teams the prospect of making the semi finals is very promising.
Last week the Boys’ teams played against Oakhill College and Redlands, highlights included good wins by the U13 Red team and the Green teams. Also very spirited performance from the 14 boys and U13 white team and a real team effort in the 15’s with exceptional performances by all boys, but in particular some excellent rebounding by Christos Kollias in defence ensured the boys were always on the front foot. Peter Contominas and Matthew Chiam were also outstanding in defence and in their leadership.

to a game with inconsistencies in uniform. Your cooperation in this area would be appreciated.
The Open Boys team were clinical and demanded respect from their opposition, from winning rebounds to quick offensive transitions and very impressive general team play the boys were by far the dominant team. Winning the game comfortably 66-17, outstanding performances from Nikolas Baratsas (high score of 31) and Adonis Tsoustas were highlights in their win against Oakhill College.
ISA Basketall Trials We wish both Nikolas Baratsas and Luca Kasalovic all the best of luck in their trials for the ISA Basketball Teams to be held on the 18th of February at Penrith. The boys have been two of our most consistent performers in the Opens team this season. Unfortunately, due to commitment clashes with Greek Orthodox Colleges no girls wish to trial.
The boys will meet St Gregorys College and Oakhill this week in the last away games. All parents are encouraged to make the trip to either Castle Hill or Campbelltown to watch their children play in the final weeks of the competition. The final two rounds on Saturday the 16th and 23rd will be played at the school or All Sorts in Alexandria. With Finals to be played on the 2nd and 9th of March
Sporting Trials In the coming weeks of this term both boys and girls will be trialling at various times for ISA Football and/or Netball teams for the upcoming winter season. Squads will be selected from a selection panel compromised of 3 staff members and include the Boys or Girls Coordinator of Sport. There will be no more than 16 players selected in any Football squad and no more than 10 players selected in a Netball squad. Student’s trialling in season 2013 must meet the requirements of making all Saturday fixtures and students will be required to take home a registration sheet detailing expectations for the upcoming season for parents to acknowledge and sign where required.
Any parents interested in helping out on the 16th or 23rd of February at school on the Barbeque can you please contact the school on 9311 3340 and leave your name and contact details. Updated points tables and weekly fixtures will be emailed to all parents who provided an email in all the remaining weeks leading up to the finals. Girls ISA Basketball Quick return to the Basketball Season last week with all girls teams travelling away. Perhaps the holidays were not the ideal preparation to the important end of the season as fitness levels seemed to be low. However, some tight matches were played and the girls are now focussed to finish the season well. Round 8 this Saturday and some teams look in good stead to be representing in the Semi Finals. Remainder rounds include:
NSW Futsal Championships Students will be informed shortly of the trial dates that will be held in the SPACE during lunch times. Selection process will follow similar guidelines in place from the ISA with three selectors and multiple opportunities to trial to ensure a fair process for all students. At this stage there will be an Under 14’s and Under 16’s Girls team, two U14 boys teams, one U16 and one Opens team for the boys. Teams will be selected by a selection panel of three staff and will be required to attend training sessions once chosen to remain members of the team.
