SINCERE CONDOLENCES

We extend our deepest sympathies to our Acting Principal Junior School Mrs Aristea Synesios, Constance, Peter and Vicki on the passing of their beloved husband and father Michael who departed on Friday 2nd August 2013, after a brave battle with cancer. Michael was a warm, loving husband and father and a loved and respected member of his Church, community and profession. Our thoughts are also with his mother Julia and all members of the extended family. May his memory be eternal.

PRAYER FOR THE DEPARTED for there is no one who lives and does not sin; you alone are without sin, your righteousness endures for ever, and your law is truth. For you are the resurrection, the life and the repose of your servant who has fallen asleep, Christ our God, and to you we offer glory, with your eternal Father and your all-holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

O God of spirits and all flesh, who have trampled down death, made the devil powerless, and given life to your world, give rest, Lord, to the soul of your servant who has fallen asleep, in a place of light, in a place of green pasture, in a place of refreshment, from where pain, sorrow and sighing have fled. As a good and loving God, forgive every sin committed by him in word, deed or thought;

May God rest the soul of Michael Synesios and grant strength to his family. 3

P & F REPORT OUR SINCERE CONDOLENCES TO THE SYNESIOS FAMILY The P&F committee members and their families reach out with their prayers to Mrs Synesios and her children, Constance, Peter and Vicki always hoping for their strength as another dear St Spyridon family member, Mr Michael Synesios prematurely departs from this world. We are truly grateful for his great support of Mrs Synesios and her family which has in turn enabled her to serve so successfully in so many different leadership roles in the St Spyridon College community. We truly admired the optimism and strength of Mrs Synesios and her children as they bravely faced Mr Synesios’ life challenge. May the whole family draw strength from the happy experiences they shared with him!

What we loved most and remembered best about our inspirational Principal, Mary Hamer We are new in Australia and at the school. We didn’t know Mrs Hamer personally but believe it or not I could feel her good energy everywhere around the school. Lucy Karagiorgou What I loved the most about Mrs Hamer was her warm, approachable nature, her humility and her dedication. Mary Baroutis I remember Mrs Hamer’s smile. She always made time to talk and listen and was always positive about things. She will be dearly missed. She was an inspirational and special woman. May she rip. Kathy Mastroperous Being new at the school, I only met Mrs Hamer a few times but that was sufficient to see how kind and dedicated to the kids she was. She was always so nice and friendly. I will never forget her good advice. When I heard she left us, I couldn’t hold the tears. May she rest in peace. Ana Winnel Mrs Hamer was a beautifully balanced person. She was friendly but fair and firm when the moment called. As a parent, I felt she offered the security, safety and strong sense of discipline we all seek in a school for our children. Like many others, I will miss her sweet smile and her sincere and strong support for P&F and beyond. There are countless great things I can recall about her in the short time I have known her. My favourite memories of her are watching her enjoy a chocolate crackle at Junior school sports carnivals and shopping happily at Spring Fair. Maria Pascalis The one thing I loved about our principal was her smile. On a good day or bad day, she was always smiling. Angela Giaras What I remember about Mrs Hamer is when we were setting up for any P&F function at school she would come and greet us with her smile and always compliment our efforts which was always appreciated. Also on a personal note, it has meant a lot to me that Mrs Hamer was there on day one of each of my four children to read out their names and welcome them to the beginning of school life! Kim Georgas Your smile will be greatly missed at all P&F functions and especially the Spring Fair coming up. RIP Mrs Hamer. Georgina Panselinos I knew you as a Principal, a colleague and a friend. I only need to look at your daughter Lydia around children and I still see you. You inspired us in so many ways. Always missed, never forgotten. Christine O’Reilly

May Mrs Hamer rest in peace, and may her family receive God's comfort throughout this time. Her family can certainly be proud of the pioneer she was. Her passion, drive and dedication to our school children and their families will always be remembered fondly. Angela Kasmas I used to love hearing Mrs Hamer asking us parents to leave the school grounds in the mornings and repeat herself over and over again. She would put a smile on my face every time. Anna Stamoulis We, the P&F committee, pray for the strength of Mrs Hamer’s family. We sincerely thank each member – Mr Hamer, Anthony, Christopher, Lydia and Mrs Hamer’s mother, Eleni for the incredible support they have offered all St Spyridon College families throughout the years. May the countless memories they shared with Mrs Hamer, support them to stay strong always. May Mrs Hamer rest peacefully! Mrs M.Pascalis P&F Committee

PI DAY

DRUM BEATS INSPIRES Over the past two weeks we have been privileged to have had the African drumming troupe “Drum Beats perform at the Senior School to Middle and Upper Schools students. Everyone was not only entertained by the hypnotic rhythms, but also inspired and energised. This is because Drum Beats brought with them enough African Djembe and Arabic Tabla drums to enable every student to play their own drum in tune and following the rhythms set by the performers. Some students and staff members showed their keen aptitude by coming to the front of stage to create their own unique beats, which the audience then had to follow.

YEAR 6 VISIT THE SENIOR SCHOOL On Tuesday Year 6 visited the Senior School campus where they experienced their final selection of taster lessons in: Mathematics, Technology, Theatre Sports & Drama, as well as PE and peer support. Student evaluations at the end of the day were once again very positive. There will be one more visit to the Senior School on in November. This will be Orientation Day for Year 7, 2014.

Reassure them that you are will be there to support them and won’t disconnect them from their online world. • Encourage your teen to tell you or another trusted adult if they receive or hear of negative messages, or are excluded by others. Help them stay connected to trusted friends and family both online and offline. This is an important protective measure against the potentially negative outcomes of bullying. • Advise your teen not to respond to any negative messages but to save the messages and details of the senders. You may want to save the messages for your teen so that they don’t keep reading them and potentially feel worse. • You can help your teen report any concerns to the administrator of the service used, including the mobile phone provider (if SMS is involved), website administrator (if social networking or chat services are involved), or internet service provider. • Understand your school’s policy about cyberbullying—do they have a policy and what is the likely outcome of a complaint about cyberbullying if another student is involved. • Encourage your teen to support their friends and report concerns about friends who may be involved in cyberbullying. • Advise your child never to share their password with friends - friendships may be shortlived at this age and former friends can misuse passwords to cyberbully. • If your child has been involved in cyberbullying and seems distressed or shows changes in behaviour or mood it may be advisable to seek professional support, including through the Cybersmart Online Helpline at www.cybersmart.gov.au/report.aspx. The Cybersmart Online Helpline provides free, confidential online counselling for children and young people. Your child’s schools may also be able to provide support and guidance. • If there is a threat to your child’s safety the police can help. In life threatening and time critical situation call Triple Zero (000).

YEAR 8 - 9 2014 PARENT FORUM Cybersafety and information about elective subject choices for 2014, were the topics presented on Wednesday evening for Year 8 students and their parents. Our local Liaison Police Officer, Senior Constable Racheal Delucyk provided very useful tips to students about using various forms of technologies safely. It was also emphasised to parents the importance of being vigilant in monitoring their children’s online communications and the need to educate children in respectful online behaviours. Not only with their written posts but also with regard to images they may display or send to others. This is because of the serious repercussions that may result if the wrong choices are made. Students must understand that digital footprints created now can have an enormous impact upon reputations and future employment opportunities.

AFTER SCHOOL SUPPORT After School Literacy and Organisational Skills Support has commenced once again. Two groups will run during Term 3. On Monday’s selected Year 8 students and on Tuesdays selected Year 7’s will meet with Ms Barbouttis in the library from 3.05-4.30pm.

CYBERBULLYING Teenagers Cyberbullying occurs when the internet, email or mobile phones are used to deliberately and repeatedly engage in hostile behaviour to harm someone. Cyberbullying occurs most commonly among older children and teens. Cyberbullying can have negative academic, social and psychological outcomes, so providing support for children and young people who are involved in cyberbullying is critical. For many teens, their online life is an important part of their social identity. Many teens fear that parents might disconnect them from the internet and therefore their supportive friends as a ‘solution’ to cyberbullying. This prevents some teens from reporting cyberbullying issues. Some teens are also concerned that parents will make cyberbullying issues worse.

More information The Cybersmart program provides a range of cybersafety materials for parents and their children. For more information, resources, advice and tips, visit the Cybersmart website at www.cybersmart.gov.au. Encourage your children and teens to take a look around the website. If you have young children, you may like to explore it together to help them understand how to protect themselves against online risks and make the most of their experiences online.

To help teens deal with cyberbullying: • Talk to your teen about cyberbullying before it happens. Work out strategies to address cyberbullying that you are both comfortable with, so your child knows what to expect if they do report concerns to you or another trusted adult.

Topic: Imagine you are a father or a mother who migrated in another country for a better life. You write a diary entry in which you reflect on your experiences as a migrant and your feelings away from your beloved ones.

YEAR 2 EXCURSION TO THE POWERHOUSE MUSEUM

Stella You are always happy when you come in our classroom.

On Friday 19th July, Year 2 visited The Powerhouse Museum to explore the ‘Transport Exhibition’. In our H.S.I.E unit of work, students had previously learnt about the history of transport and discovered the vast changes and inventions that have come about over time.

Julia Mrs Hamer you always look beautiful and wear pretty clothes.

On our visit to the Museum, students were able to link their knowledge with a hands-on experience with real-life transportation. Students were taken around the ‘Transport Exhibition’ and embarked on a lucid adventure where they travelled back in time by a 19th Century based guided tour. This tour focused on re-inventing Australian transport history and providing students with an opportunity to discover what life was like for many people before modern transport was invented.

Jenna Mrs Hamer you have made a good school for us and I love you. Myles You are good at watching everyone on the cameras. Nio Mrs Hamer you are nice to everyone.

Year 2 enjoyed moving among the different kinds of vehicles that have shaped our way of life and made an impact on our daily living. A few of the many grand and gracious vehicles that Year 2 explored were ‘The Catalina Flying Boat’ in which Captain P G Taylor surveyed an air route between Sydney and Valparaiso, Chile, in 1951 and the luxuriously appointed Governor's railway carriage of 1891.

Phillip I love you very much because you love us. Phoebe I love you in the whole world. Stephen Mrs Hamer we always stop and listen to you when you are talking on the microphone.

different types of transport at the ‘Transport Exhibition’.

Overall, Year 2 appreciated the different types of transport they were able to discover and were delighted in seeing the amazing ways that people have travelled over time.

First, our teacher marked the roll while we ate our crunch and sip as a class. I had a banana and it was very tasty!

Miss Galanis 2C

Then, we got on the bus and I sat with Nektarios. We put our seatbelts on and then started making paper origami together so that the ride to the Museum would feel shorter.

Year 2’s Fantastic Excursion On Friday 19th July 2013, Year 2 went on an excursion to The Powerhouse Museum to see the ‘Transport Exhibition’.

Next, we arrived at the Museum and Miss Galanis told us to eat our recess. When we finished, Miss Galanis put us into two groups so that we wouldn’t get lost in the Museum.

First, Miss Galanis marked the roll to make sure we were all here. While Miss Galanis did this, we ate our crunch and sip. For crunch and sip I ate a juicy green apple.

After that, we started our ‘Transport’ tour with a special tour guide who led the way. He had four red boxes with him and we didn’t know what was inside them. Later, we found out the boxes had musical instruments for us to use during our tour. It was a lot of fun making loud sounds in the Museum.

Then, we got on the bus and I sat next to Mia. During the bus ride, Mia and I were talking about how comfortable our seats were and about how excited we were to see the Museum. Next, we arrived at the Museum and ate our recess. I had a packet of chips and yummy chocolate Oreo biscuits. Then, we were taken inside and placed into two equal groups. After that, we started our tour around the ‘Transport Exhibition’. It was amazing to see all the old types of transport that once existed before our time. Our tour guide helped us explore the Museum by leading us through the Exhibition.

Later, the tour finished and we made our way to the Science Investigation room where we had free time to explore. I went to the Ambulance Bike. On this machine, you had to hop onto the bike and peddle so that the siren could light up. The siren then flashed when we used enough human power to peddle it. Finally, we ate out lunch and Nektarios and I played with our other friends in Year 2. Then, we made our way back to the bus to go back to school.

Later, we went to the Science Investigation room. In this room, Miss Galanis gave us free time to explore all the amazing machines they had in there. I enjoyed the chocolate maker machine the most because it gave us tiny pieces of chocolate to share.

Overall, I enjoyed the excursion to The Powerhouse Museum and I can’t wait to go again.

Finally, we ate our lunch and headed back to school. I sat next to Katerina on the bus this time and we were really tired from all the walking we did in the Museum.

She’s fine, she’s fine, I wish she was mine. Always smiling, doing her thing Doesn’t need soul searching As she loves to sing!

BORN TO RUN Inspired by Cathy Freeman: My Story Born in Mackay, On a hot, dry day, A dream to win gold, She needs to be bold. Loves to run, Born to run.

I had a war inside my heart, I had war inside my soul, No one there to motivate me, My feelings were out of control.

Even though the government favoured The white, She tried to make things right! Born to run.

She’s fine, she’s fine, I wish she was mine. Always positive and happy, Even smiling when she changes a nappy, It just can’t be fake, can it?

In a couple of years she made Sydney, Light the torch with a glee, In the 400m final. She lived her dream and won gold, One she never sold!

I had a war inside my heart, I had war inside my soul, I had to fake happiness and laughter, And faking to smile was my goal.

She’s fine, she’s fine, I wish she was mine. So perfect so cool, Even has her own pool!

This poem is based on a book I recently read called House of Secrets that’s about three kids who get trapped in a fantasy land with skeletons and pirates:

I had a war inside my heart, I had a war inside my soul, As if I had heavy weights on my face, Just like a bowling ball…

HOUSE OF SECRETS Living in a dreamworld, Full of blood-thirsty pirates, Fighting against supernatural enemies, With only a knife and a fork.

like to thank the teachers for doing such a great job. A special thank you to Mr Dookie who worked behind the scenes in setting up the entries prior to the carnival and who put together all the results afterwards. And of course Mr Volas who was by my side throughout the day confirming things for me and making sure everything was running smoothly.

This year, for the first time, 8 year old Infant students participated alongside their Primary age peers. This worked really well and will be continued in future years. As all events are age specific, 7 year olds are not allowed to participate in these events. They would have to participate in the infants activities throughout the day. This rule will remain for next year. To avoid disappointment we would really appreciate it if parents did not send their children to the 8 years events.

UPCOMING EVENTS 29th August ASISSA Athletics Carnival, ES Marks 6th September Greek Orthodox Athletics Carnival, ES Marks. 11th September CIS Athletics Carnival

EATING HEALTHY Students are expected to bring healthy nutritional food to school for recess and lunch. On days where students take part in sport, it is even more important that they are consuming healthy foods that will give them energy. The canteen at carnivals is not permitted. Hot chips, ice-creams and foods high in fats and sugars are strictly prohibited. Student lunches should consist of sandwiches, fruit and water. Parents can buy food for their child from the canteens after the carnival has finished and their child has been dismissed.

Congratulations to all who took part!

The First XI football team has suffered two loses in consecutive weeks to BMG and CCGS; the team is missing all the Year 12 boys because of their Trial Examinations. With the boys due back for this week’s game against St Pauls at Heffron the team will need to take at least 1 point away from the game to secure a home semi-final. They were unlucky to lose the game 2-0. Credit to all the Year 11 and Year 10 boys who stood up and were counted by making themselves available to play for the Firsts. This level of commitment and passion to play for their school is what is helping to drive our sporting success for season 2013. Congratulations to Kristian Kontakos, Simeon Kerameas and Adonis Tsoustas for their stirring performances.

Our U 13’s boys football team, despite their draw with BMG, performed exceptionally well to outplay their opponents at Oxford Falls to defeat St Pius X College 3-1. This gives the boys the renewed confidence leading up to the semi-finals. The term is starting to achieve consistency in their performances. Their shape and skill on the ball has improved and the boys now look certain to play semi-final football. Our U 14 boys white team were stunned and outplayed against BMG 2 weeks ago. Whilst the loss was a set-back, valuable lessons were learnt and the boys were looking to try and bounce back against a very good football team this week against CCGS. Although the boys started slowly, they managed to retain possession and create opportunities giving them a deserving 1-0 in the first half. In the second half the boys improved on their performance finishing in front of goal winning the half 3-0. Standout performances from Constantinos Kollias and George Dimas helped the boys bounce back with a strong 4-0 win. The U 14 blue team have been training and working hard to improve every week. The students have been playing against non ISA schools namely Trinity and Newington and they have enjoyed the experience that this brings. Next week the boys play Sydney Boys High.

The U 15’s proved too strong for BMG last week. Against CCGS this week the boys had a much more difficult task. At half time the score was locked at 2-2 and the boys were working hard to stay in the contest against the well-structured CCGS team. In the second half the boys lost two of their players and were forced to play one short for most of the half. The numerical advantage of the opposition handed them 4 unanswered goals and the boys conceded their first defeat this season losing 6-2. Although disappointing the boys knew that the score line does not reflect their potential and with semi-finals football only two weeks away the boys will need to sharpen their skills and maintain shape in order to progress to a final for season 2013.

CIS CUP Quarter Final The First XI football team travelled to Knox Grammar School for their Quarter final clash with Knox in the CIS CUP. While the task was daunting because of the magnitude of the game, also in awe of their facilities, the boys knew they were a chance.

The U 17 boys needed a win against BMG but could only manage a 0-0 draw. This result left them vulnerable on the points table. With the bye this week the boys must get a result in their last game of football against St Pauls College to secure a home semi-final berth in what is shaping as a very competitive league.

Our boys started the game slowly and were containing the Knox attacking raids. With concentration in defence the boys managed to hold them off early, unfortunately with 15 minutes

to play in the first half Knox scored a fortuitous goal and took the lead 1-0. After this our boys started to open up and James Andrew earned the team a penalty with Christopher Kolistasis scoring from the spot. At half time the score was locked at 1-1. With the Knox Grammar borders barracking for their team our boys were up against it. In the second half our boys’ conceded a penalty and ultimately this was what separated the two teams in the end. With Knox winning the game 2-1 in the Quarter final.

and St Dominics College, topping their group and progressing to the Quarter Finals where the boys played a determined game against Macarthur Anglican College. The boys were successful winning the game helping them progress to the semi-finals. The boys played against a well organised Homebush Boys team, unfortunately our boys started slowly and conceded 2 early goals. The boys managed to fight back and get on equal terms before Homebush got away with another 2 goals close to the end of the game.

While the boys were defeated we are proud of their performance. They were never outplayed nor did they lose the passion and determination to win despite being down on the score board twice. At the beginning of the season the team mapped out their goal to try and win the ISA title with the Greek Orthodox Colleges and CIS Cup as extra games to help the team gel in order to achieve this difficult challenge.

For the majority of the team this was their final Futsal tournament and a semi-final appearance in their last tournament was an excellent result for the boys. Despite not winning the State Title the boys have been past winners and have helped to make the St Spyridon name a familiar school at every State Championships for the last five years.

I want to thank all the parents and students who attended the game to support our students in particular Maria Mio our Senior Prefect, who attended despite being in the middle of the trial HSC exams. I cannot praise the Year 12 boys enough and nor can I adequately express my appreciation for their commitment to the school, even though in the middle of the HSC the boys attended the game and made the trip to represent the College. I also congratulate their coach Mr Zafiropoulos who has helped to shape what is a wonderful Football team. I wish all the boys and Mr Zafiropoulos the best of luck in the ISA.

CARNIVAL

SENIOR

On Thursday the 25th July the Senior School had their annual Athletics Carnival. This year the high school attended Hensley Athletics track at Eastgardens moving away from ES Marks to enjoy the newly refurbished facilities. The students participated with enthusiasm and determination in an effort to qualify for the St Spyridon Athletics Team to represent the school at the ISA Carnival against the other 18 schools in the ISA competition on the 10th of September. This year the Opens age group was split into 17’s and Opens (18+) to fall into line with the ISA, we also included the 1500m for the first time and this event was a success. As a result the following MANY new records were created.

With strong participation from all students this year’s house competition proved to be close particularly in the Upper School. The Nemeans over the years have been very strong, however, the Olympians have been closing in on the Champion House. Despite this the Nemeans held on to win the overall house trophy for 2013. Champion of Champions In the much anticipated traditional Champion of Champions race Chrystal Christie of Year 9 was victorious in the girls winning her second consecutive Champion of Champions race in a time of 14.34 over 100m. Crystal is now one win away from equalling most Champion of Champion titles. James Andrew from Year 12 in the boys won convincingly in his final race at a St Spyridon College Athletics Carnival in a time of 11.69.

This year the school will be having Athletics training for our squad two days a week after school from 3:30pm to 5pm starting in week 4 of this term to help to prepare all students for the ISA meet. Also all students in the squad will be required to attend an Invitational Meet on the 31st August at ES Marks to help in their preparations. These training sessions will be conducted by NSW Athletics trainers and the school is looking to strengthen the Athletics programme by making these training sessions open to all students in the school who are interested in improving their skills in Athletics. All interested students should speak to either Mr Kaldis or Ms O’ Shea for more information.
