AIS NSW ADVICE TO PARENTS School Zones in Operation

We are pleased to announce that at its meeting of the 26th November 2013, Randwick City Council approved the following Motion, moved by Cnr Anthony Andrews Deputy Mayor, and seconded by Cnr Harry Stavrinos.

The NSW Government has advised that the Double Demerit Point (DDP) period for Christmas 2013 and New Year 2014 will be effective from Friday, 20th December, 2013 to Wednesday 1st January, 2014 inclusive.

1. That Council construct a carpark in the median strip of Anzac Parade in front of St Spyridon College, Maroubra to assist with drop off and pick up of students and further provide parking for school users and visitors who attend the college to attend the new St Spyridon School Performing Arts Centre and;

Also please be advised that Friday, 20th December, 2013 is a gazette school day therefore DDPs will apply to all relevant school zone offences committed on that day.

CONGRATULATIONS MRS SYNESIOS FOR THE PRINCIPAL PROMOTION IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

2. That Council make representations to the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) for the installation of traffic signals at the intersection of Pozieres Avenue and Anzac Parade, Matraville/ Maroubra (hereafter referred to as the intersection) in order to improve pedestrian safety for students who attend St Spyridon College, noting that a pedestrian crossing is not an option as Anzac Parade is a dual carriageway and not permissible under RMS regulations. Further such traffic signals will improve the safety for all users at this intersection.

Tears of joy rolled down everyone’s face at the Junior School Musical Showcase at the SPACe as Mrs Stefanou gave the long awaited announcement regarding Mrs Synesios’ new role in the College as Junior School Principal. Mrs Synesios is most worthy of a position of this nature. We are sure the late Mr Synesios and Mrs Hamer would be most delighted and proud of her achievement. We wish her well in her new official title in the College and confidently know that she will successfully fulfill every challenge as she has already done so in an acting capacity. We are behind her all the way!

We thank Mr. Andrews and Mr Stavrinos for putting the Motion forward, and the successful result for our College community. In addition, we thank the Mayor of Randwick Mr Scott Nash and all Councillors for their support. The Federal Member for Kingsford-Smith the Hon Matt Thistlesthwaite MP, and the State Member for Maroubra the Hon Michael Daley MP are warmly acknowledged for their interest in our College and the safety of our students.

JUNIOR SCHOOL SHOWCASE

MUSICAL

This year’s Musical Showcase truly lived up to its theme – it really was “The Greatest”. A well-chosen selection of the classic hits of the past was presented with great energy, talent and lots of colour to successfully entertain family and friends. The 30 year anniversary of the College was vibrantly celebrated with the effervescent Kindy grade singing and dancing to “It’s a Party” and “Happy Birthday”. The piano solos were most impressive and Year 6 sustained the Kefi with their Greek folk dances and the comical number of “Kyra Yioryena”. Congratulations

We also thank Mr Elia Economou, for speaking to the Motion, and for liaising with Council on this important matter on behalf of our College and Parish.

to all the performers who made us smile, laugh and proud of their talents. We praise the tireless efforts of all their teachers especially Mrs Coyne and Mrs Haskas for creating such fine performers. What an excellent show!

Please note the booking form MUST be filled out and returned should you wish for your children to attend vacation care, whether it be a permanent or casual booking.

P&F FUNDRAISER ACHIEVEMENTS

Bookings will only be accepted if we have a completed Enrolment form as it is against National Law to accept children into our care without a form.

It has been a steady year of fundraising from Lambatha stalls to Palm Sunday lunch to Mother’s Day pampering Night Out to Junior School Carnival kiosk to Spring Fair fever.

Kind Regards,

Every event, big or small has made a valuable contribution to the final profit figure of over $37,000. Our main priority is to annually donate a cheque to the College of a substantial amount in order to assist in the purchases of educational resources. A presentation of this cheque will be taking place at the Prize Giving assembly at SPACe on Thursday 5 December and we look forward to this significant moment in your presence.

JUNIOR SCHOOL REPORT MUSICAL SHOWCASE Mrs Coyne and the Junior School students once again astounded us with their musical and creative talents, presenting a selection of “The Greatest” musical pieces of all time. I was particularly thrilled with the Greek items which the students delivered with pride and confidence and marvelled, at the endurance of the Year Six Greek dancers who made several quick costume changes during the afternoon.

Throughout the year, P&F has funded College Memorabilia, Kindy starter gifts, Year 12 student Bible gifts, Year 6 formal celebration cakes and Year 6 Dux award prize and College promotional banners, to name a few. We truly thank all the people who have supported P&F events throughout this year through their donations, efforts and presence at any time.

P&F FESTIVE WISHES TO FAMILIES AND FRIENDS OF THE COLLEGE

I thank the dedicated and passionate teaching staff of the Junior School, including Mr Podjarski and Ka. Haska, who ensured that this was a performance to remember. From the singing and laughter that came from the audience, I think the students achieved the desired outcome for this our 30 year anniversary.

We sincerely wish all the families and friends of our College, a most eventful and happy festive season. Relax and enjoy the celebration of Christmas and the arrival of a New Year. Have a safe holiday! See you in 2014!

Thank you to the P & F for serving us with refreshments.

It is more important to focus on what’s important for their stage of life. During the Infant years, children need to feel relaxed, excited and motivated to learn. Children who are well prepared for school are more likely to develop good relationships with others and to have a sense of belonging within the school community. These are the attributes that will set the foundations for success.

PREFECTS: Angelique Giokas Frances – Lee Pascalis Lisa Stamoulis George Stavrou Jordan Frazis Michael Vlahakis HOUSE CAPTAINS

Children need to develop skills of resilience, and emotional , social and learning skills, all of which parents play a major role in. This includes teaching your child to be friendly and cooperative by talking to them constantly about what being a good friend means; for example discussing sharing, taking turns, and using kind words.

CORINTHIANS Katerina Darras – Samaras Andrew Karaniki DELPHIANS Roza Papas James Hristeff NEMEANS Nicoletta Tsimboukis Michael Konitsas

Encourage your child to be accountable for their actions including looking after their own things, and taking small steps towards responsibility at home with tasks that are age appropriate E.g. Setting the table, putting their dirty clothes in the washing basket. Give your child the opportunity to make choices for themselves. Teach them to be accepting of rules. Talk to them about how different settings have different rules and expectations of them may differ depending on the social context and rules that govern that situation.

OLYMPIANS Dominique Koukos Thomas Mouratidis

Let your children know you have expectations of them but remember it’s about letting them grow and develop at an age appropriate rate. It’s all about your child’s experiences at school. Most importantly celebrate their progress, and by all means discuss areas for improvement. Remember to tell them there is more than one path to achieve their goals and if they are willing to work at it, anything is possible, because the most successful people in life are those who are resilient.

WHY A GRADE IS NOT GOING TO RULE THE REST OF YOUR CHILD’S LIFE

Mrs Kipriotis Infants Coordinator

A grade is an indication of how a child is travelling in comparison to the cohort at a particular stage. It is not a password to the future. At school children are all travelling along the same path and at times they come on and off. It is a long road to the HSC and it would serve all well to remember that students grow and develop at individual rates.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE All Premier’s Reading Challenge Awards will be handed out as soon as they are received from the Department. Sometimes they may be late, in which case they will be held over until

the New Year. Children leaving in Year 6 will receive their certificate in the mail.

LIBRARY BOOKS Could all children and parents please search at home for any outstanding Library Books that need to be returned, otherwise a fine may be incurred. Mrs A. Synesios Principal

SENIOR SCHOOL REPORT ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND STUDENT LEADERSHIP ASSEMBLY K – 12 On Thursday 5th December, 2013 we will be rewarding students for their academic achievements as well as announcing the Student Leaders for 2014.

STAFF NEWS

This special assembly will take place in the Sports and Performing Arts Centre and will start promptly at 11.30a.m.

Ms Gonzalez, Economic Teacher will be on leave for 2014. She will be volunteering in Peru, Columbia, Ecuador and Brazil in construction, conservation and working with the homeless and in orphanages. We wish her well and look forward to her return in 2015.

Students will be awarded 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place Years 7 – 11 and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place Year 12. Students are to arrive at School and assemble in the courtyard no later than 10.45a.m. Students are to wear summer uniform and blazer. The reports for Years 7 – 10 will be distributed at the end of the afternoon.

PHYSICS EXCURSION On Sunday 17 November the HSC 2014 Physics class set off for a two day astronomy excursion. We first visited Parkes Radio telescope which featured in the film ‘The Dish’. The Parkes Radio telescope was responsible for bringing the world the first images of the Apollo 11 Moon landing in 1969. The telescope is still active today as a research tool giving astronomers a glimpse into the workings of distant galaxies. To Mr Zafiropoulos’ great disappointment the cricket match had to be called off due to rain and the fact that no one is actually allowed to play cricket in the dish.

ST BASIL’S VISIT On Wednesday, 27th November, Year 10 went to St Basil’s Nursing Home to sing Christmas Carols and give the residents Christmas cards prepared by themselves and Year 7. A rewarding experience for everyone.

After Parkes we drove on to Coonabarabran to camp in the Warrumbungle National Park. We arrived safely and intact, which is more than we can say for the two kangaroos that decided to jump in front of the van. We had hoped to then view the Leonid meteor shower that was on that night but were confounded by cloud.

9

The students made the most of it, however, and large amounts of marshmallows were consumed.

Dahl classic and the way they were able to recreate the magical world of Willy Wonka in the Drama Room. As one of the year 4 audience members exclaimed “It was raining candy!”

The next morning we set off through the fog to visit the Siding Spring Observatory just outside Coonabarabran. We were given an extensive tour by the incomparable Donna Burton, a resident Astronomer at the site. Siding Spring has 12 telescopes including the 3.9 metre Anglo-Australian telescope and the 2.3 metre Advanced Technology Telescope, both of which we were able to go inside. The students were exposed to a wealth of information about the real world of Astronomy research and enjoyed themselves despite the Arctic conditions.

CANTEEN I would like to thank our wonderful volunteers: Diane Siagos, Elenie Coroneos and Elizabeth Alsop who help us in the Canteen on a weekly basis, also Stacey Christofa who volunteered during the year. I am very grateful and appreciate their time and support. Thank you to our teaching staff: Mr Kaldis, Mr Georgoulopoulos and Ms Gambriell who provide their help in times of need. Also a big thank you to Year 11 and 12 students for their help during recess and lunch times. I would also like to thank our students and staff who support our Canteen, whether it be on a daily basis or just occasionally, allowing us to cater for their recess and or lunch.

MIDDLE REPORT

SCHOOL

YEAR 7 2014 ORIENTATION DAY A very exciting day was had by all our 62 new students as they enthusiastically acquainted themselves with the Senior School campus and engaged in informative lessons. Even though there were some very nervous faces, by the end of the day the foundations for new friendships were established. Students began the day with a guided tour of the school, followed by “Getting to Know You” group work led by Year 9 Peer Support Leaders. After a recess break students cycled through three taster lessons; English, with Mrs Kefalouros , Greek with Mrs Faletas with and Cricket with Mr Zafiropoulos and Mr Meintanis. Following lunch, students evaluated their day, and received their ‘Passport to Senior School’ before being fare welled by Mrs Stefanou (Head of College), Mrs Katsogiannis (Principal), Year 9 Peer Support Leaders and myself.

“Don’t let life discourage you: everyone who got where he is, had to begin where he was”. Throughout 2013 students across all year groups have shown their understanding of the above quote in many ways such as:- trying to apply themselves with diligence towards their studies, building a sense of community through their involvement in various school service projects and activities, showing resilience in difficult situations, learning the meaning of respect and responsibility, as well as the importance of accountability. Looking back this year has gone by like a whirlwind and has been filled to the brim with what now feels like relentless activity! Some of the varied activities students have been involved in include: Adopt an Apple Tree; Earth Hour; collecting food donations for the Greek Welfare Centre’s Easter Appeal; our choir chanting the Engomia during the Good Friday Church service and Year 11’s carrying the Epitaphios; Years 9 and most recently Year 10 visiting nursing homes and Holy Cross Monastery; students volunteering at Vacation Care during the school holidays and helping out at the Newtown Soup Kitchen each week; supporting numerous charitable causes such as The Cancer Councils Biggest Morning Tea, Pink Ribbon Day, Jeans for Genes, Legacy, Girl Rising, the Bushfire Appeal for St George Monastery, and World Vision Child sponsorship to name but a few. Our students have attended numerous leadership development activities and forums both in school and at a variety of venues including Parliament House. Additionally, there have been many highlights in the creative and performing arts, sporting and academic arena’s, perhaps too many to mention here, where our students have distinguished themselves. All this would not be possible without the enthusiasm of students and the drive of teachers who work tirelessly to enrich the lives of our students.

YOUNG LEADERS DAY

Congratulations and well done everyone for all your efforts! I wish you all a safe, happy holiday season and look forward to doing it all over again in 2014.

Today Year 11 attended the annual Young Leaders Day Convention at Darling Harbour with their Year Adviser Ms O’Shea and Home

11

Room Teacher Miss Gonzalez. Over 3,500 young potential leaders from across three states attended this event. They witnessed a very exciting program which challenged them to reach their own personal goals as well as motivate them to achieve the goals of those they are leading. An array of inspirational speakers addressed the students, shared their special stories and gave wise advice.

** NB: The staff at Jamberoo will conduct a swim test on all students before entering the fun park activities. This will identify their swimming level and result in the issue of a bracelet which must be worn at all times as it will determine the rides they may use.

Lefteris Valmas 7GKHonours

Δεν θα υπήρχαν μαθήματα και διαβάσματα, θα υπήρχαν μόνο σπορ όπως το μπάσκετ, κρίκετ και βόλλεϊ. Οι δάσκαλοι δεν θα παράδιναν μαθήματα, απλώς θα έπαιζαν σπορ με τους μαθητές. Οι μέρες θα περνούσαν χωρίς τα παιδιά να μαθαίνουν τίποτα! Τι ιδανικό σχολείο, λοιπόν, θα ήταν αυτό;

Joanna Skouteris 7GKHonours

Αφού ο Δίας δεν μπορούσε πια άλλο χωρίς τον κεραυνό του, είπε στον Ερμή να πάει στον Ήφαιστο και να του πει να του φτιάξει έναν καινούργιο. Ο Ήφαιστος τότε φανέρωσε στον Ερμή τι είχε γίνει. Πώς να ‘λεγε όχι στο Δία; Δεν ήταν δα τόσο κουτός να μπλέξει μαζί του! Τι έφταιγε αυτός που ο Δίας δεν είχε καιρό για κουβέντες;

KINDERGARTEN MINI-BEASTS During Term 4 Kindergarten students have been learning about Mini-beasts. On Friday as a finale to the much loved topic Kindergarten students had their Annual Bug Day. Kindergarten students completed various bug activities, took part in an interactive show (Travel bugs) and had hands on time touching the different Mini-beasts. They also had a bug lunch, went on a bug hunt around the school and were treated to some delicious jelly and cordial. Please read the recounts that students wrote about the Bug day….

butterfly sandwich and a caterpillar made out of fruit. Finally we had jelly and cordial. I had green cordial and it was yummy. I had so much fun.

The second activity I did was mangroves. We travelled by boat to Mangrove Island; we walked through the water exploring the mangrove environment. We got to pick up oysters, sea slugs and Cassie our instructor picked up a jellyfish and we got to touch it. We also licked a leaf, which tasted like salt.

Vaia Grivas KC On Friday we had our Bug Day. Fist we did a bug sheet and I tried very hard. Then we ate recess. Next we watched Jackie with all the bugs and I liked the rhinoceros beetle the best. I loved it. After that I got a magnifying glass to look at the bugs. Then we had a bug lunch. Next we had jelly and cordial. I had red jelly and cordial. Finally we went inside and then I went home. I had lots and lots of fun.

My last activity for the day was pool rafting. We learnt how to tie knots and make a raft. We worked in teams. Ours was in a shape of a triangle. We lost our race but we still had a lot of fun. After dinner, all of Year 3 and 4 went into the hall and had a mini Olympics. It wasn’t all that fun but it was o.k. We rolled apples and dropped ping-pong balls. I hit the target a few times.

Franklin Skouteris KC

Later when we went back to our cabins and we had lots of fun. We played games, ate lollies and talked a lot too! The next morning, we had to pack up and I was one of the first to pack up all my things. I was sad but happy at the same time that we were leaving. I was happy because I was going to see my mum and sad because I was leaving camp.

CAMP MEMORIES YEAR THREE

We eventually left on the bus to go home. I had a super fun time!

On Thursday 7 November, Year Three went to camp. We travelled by bus to Deer Park which is located in the Royal National Park at Bundeena.

Michael Antoniou 3A

The very first thing we did was to wave goodbye to our parents and grandparents. When we got onto the bus we were that excited we were waving to everybody. The bus trip only took an hour. When we got there we went into a room and we were told our cabin number and whom we were sharing with. I was sharing a cabin with Kosta, Nixon, Foti and Jameson. We were also told our activity groups. The first activity we all did was the waterslide. It was so fun. I got to go on it eighteen times! I

My partner was Anika. We tasted the water and a leaf, which tasted like salt. Then we had to find oysters and anything else that lived in salt water like crabs. After an hour we headed back to the boat. On the boat we sang ‘Sponge Bob Square Pants’ with Cassie. When we got back we had afternoon tea. Later, we had free time but after that I got ready for pool rafting. It was boy’s versus girls. We made a triangular raft because it was easier to make a triangle than a square. After we had the races we got ready for dinner. Friday morning we had ‘Christian Discovery’. Then we had free time but during that time we had to pack our bags and clean our rooms. Later that morning we went on a bush walk. We came to an amazing site with a beautiful view of the water. It was a fire ban that day, so we ate our lunch at the barbeque area near the campsite. After lunch the bus came to pick us up and take us back to school. I wish I could go there again. I had a great time! Sophia Economou 3A

MY TWO DAYS AT CAMP On Thursday, 7th November and Friday, 8th November Year Three had their really exciting camp, which was located at Deer Park. My favourite instructor at Deer Park was Cassie. First of all, when we got there we went and sat on the steps and waited for our instructors to give us our instructions. One of the instructors came to greet us. Her name was Amiee. She told us that we had to go to our cabins and unpacked our bags, and then we were to go into the hall. Next, we were told what was to happen at camp over the next two days. We then got ready for the waterslide! I have to say, it was the best activity that I did at camp. Some of the time I went on the slide with Anika and the other times I went by myself. After, the waterslide we had to get ready for the next activity. I was in Group three so my next activity was going to the mangroves. It was very fun because we went there by boat and got to walk through the water. We had to choose partners before we did any exploring.

PARLIAMENT HOUSE First we entered a large hall full of portraits of past Prime Ministers and Governor-Generals. We entered a room shaped like the House of Representatives and did a role play to pass a bill about team sports in schools. The tour of the building was very interesting. I saw what I had learnt about the parliamentary workers. To finish we had refreshments and we took photos outside. Jade Capitanelis

Role playing Sergeant at Arms for the very first time was funny for me. First of all, after answering a question correctly, I was appointed to the position. Holding the mace replica was heavy initially; I quickly got a firm grip on the object. In the process of holding the mace, I put on a costume which felt strange and read my lines in the script; all given to me by the Parliamentary Education Officer. The final stage of the role play had me guarding the doors. My legs were shaking and I had butterflies in my stomach! To conclude, it was a wonderful experience being the Sergeant at Arms. NATIONAL DINOSAUR MUSEUM

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AUSTRALIA: KSPACE

This venue was close to the accommodation: Gold Creek Tourist Resort. On entry we saw the head of a dinosaur. We entered the Cretaceous and exited at the end of the Jurassic periods. I was shocked by the motion of the sensor-activated dinosaurs and enjoyed the skeletons and fossil collections. If anyone touched me in the dark, I ran a mile! Apart from that, I thoroughly enjoyed this museum.

KSpace is a design station activity where students design their own vehicle or building of the future in a time limit of 5 minutes. Using a photo of ourselves and our designs, a movie is created to view all of the group’s designs in action. This movie is in 3D so we had to put on 3D-glasses so we could watch. We kept the glasses as a souvenir as we left. I loved it.

The AIS is the place where athletes train to become stronger, and for Summer and Winter Olympians to live together and prepare for competition. I visited the souvenir shop but didn’t buy anything; but I wore the AIS shirt I already own at camp.

Canberra was an amazing experience, partly because it gave us a sense of independence! In fact, becoming a politician appears to be a very interesting career choice. LOGIC CLUB 2013 Logic Club was introduced to the school by Mr Dookie. Logic Club is a Co-Curricular activity, which this year, took place after school on Monday afternoons. To attend Logic Club, Mr Dookie invites you based on your mathematical abilities. During the lessons, we are confronted by, what I like to call, ‘Thinking outside the box questions’. Most of you will assume that all we do is work, but, I have to say, it actually is quite fun when you get to work with a partner or with the whole class to find a method on how to solve a problem. The benefits of attending Logic Club include competing in the Olympiad Competition. This is a set of five tests that each contain five questions. All of you are probably thinking “5 questions only… how hard could it be!” but let me tell you, that even your parents would most likely struggle with these higher order thinking questions! Overall, I just can’t thank Mr Dookie enough for holding the Logic Club and for all his time and effort in broadening our knowledge of maths while at the same time, making it very enjoyable. And as Mr Dookie’s favourite saying goes: “I am not interested in if you solved the problem, but how you solved it”. Thank you Mr Dookie.

YEAR 5 SPORT TERM 4- OZ TAG

SPORTS

COLUMN

This term we have been learning how to play Oz Tag with the help of Mrs Diavatiotis and Ms McCarthy. We have been learning different skills for example; how to hold the ball, how to pass, how to dodge and to run forward when we have the ball.

JUNIOR SCHOOL Dear Parents, Next year we are making some exciting changes to our sports program. There will be trials for many sports and co-curricular training.

Every Thursday we learn a different skill and technique and then we play games which have been a lot of fun.

Other exciting initiatives will include:  Year 6 attending the Senior School Swimming Carnival (as well as the Junior School Carnival)  Athletics Co-curricular:  Junior School Sporting teams invited to watch Senior School Greek Orthodox College tournaments.

Oz Tag is a very challenging sport and many students were learning it for the first time so it has taken a while for some, but we have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I think Oz Tag is a fun and safe way to learn how to play rugby league as the skills are similar. We wouldn’t have been able to come so far without our wonderful teachers and Year 5 would like to thank them for this.

Uniforms: Students selected for any sporting teams at the Junior School will have to purchase their uniform from the uniform shop. They will be the same uniforms that the Senior School squads use, therefore, they can be used when they go to the Senior School.

Efthimia Kollias 5A

The Sports program for PE will remain the same next year apart from Year 5 who will be attending interschool sport with Year 6 during Term 2 and 3. Mr A. Condous 14 Blue Last Saturday 16th November the 14 blue team played St Patricks College. At the beginning the game we were down 18 – 12. In the second half of the game we made and alright effort, but we were still down by 7 points. The opposition was tough so we lost 21– 14. All the boys in the team tried very hard in the game. We look forward to our next game. Shivan Raj

SENIOR SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL

Round 5 16th November 2013

14 White On Saturday the 16th November 2013 the under 14 white’s played against St Pauls Grammar school at the SPACE. The boys started off with a steady start. Jordan Costopoulos scored a lot of early game points with his smooth shooting skills, scoring a total of 11 points. The opposing team had some tall players but we still managed to get a lot of rebounds and get past them in offence. The boys played well but we still need practice. The final score was a 42-15 St Spyridon victory. Michael King

13Blue On Saturday 16th November, the 13 Blues versed St Patricks College at the St Spyridon SPACe. We lost 24 to 21. It was a hard game, the team worked well together and we had some great moments. The St Patrick defence was very strong in the end, and despite the loss, we all had fun, enjoyed the game and are looking forward to the next game. Lefteri Valmas

13 White Last Saturday, the 16th November the 13 whites played a very exciting game against St Pauls. Unfortunately Michael Bosnijak was out this week, due to injuring his arm, but that didn’t stop us, as we had great performances from Daniel Xeras and Nathan Adam. Our final score was 49-10 with the 13 whites continuing their winning streak. Congratulations to all the boys for their exceptional game and we wish Michael a speedy recovery. Harris Papas

14 Blue 14B’s are slowly becoming a better basketball team because of their positiveness and enthusiasm at training and on game days. Mr Condous who coaches this team has made very good progress with all of the players because of his wealth of experience as a Basketball coach. Continual effort from the players, myself and my Manager (Emmanuel Constantopedos), will help the team improve. Players who played well this week are:

15 White Saturday 16th November the U15 boys were buoyed by their performance last week winning their first game of the season and drawing confidence from that were confident of being able to win their second game against St Pauls Grammar. Highlights in the game included a strong performance from Sebastian Zois who won many of the rebounds. This was a challenging game with both teams prepared

27

to attack quickly. Our team took the half time lead and extended that in the second half. The boys will now meet St Stanislaus this Saturday the 23rd November. Patrick Langlands

13 White The U13 White team played St Stanislaus College from Bathurst. The boys were emphatic victors in a game that did not really test the boys. The boys all performed very well with perhaps Dean Albanakis having one of his best games of the year. Credit must go to this boys’ team as they remain undefeated for the year with one game to play.

Opens The Open boys continued their positive form against St Pauls Grammar winning comfortably against a younger team. The boys were excellent in their execution and St Pauls were unable to find a way around the strong defence and organised structure of the team thanks to Mr Koulouriotis and his hard work with all the team.

14 Blue The U14 Blue team unfortunately lost to St Andrews in a very entertaining game. The boys were always in the contest and despite being down on the scoreboard they never gave in. Ultimately what let the team down was their execution in shooting. Something the team now needs to work on at training to get the result they deserve.

15/16 White White team had a difficult battle against and in form Oakhill team. The boys tried their best but were outplayed by a well drilled and organised team.

The 14 blue team had a very tough game on Saturday loosing against St Andrews College 28-20. This was the last game of this year. We played well on the field but missed a lot of scoring opportunities, missing a lot of shots. All the boys played well against this difficult team. A very strong effort by George Andrianakos. During training we should focus on our shooting and layups. Demetrios Avdalis

Round 6 - 23rd November Round 6 was the final home game for the boy’s representative basketball teams. The boys have been improving weekly and their efforts have been rewarded with great results, this week was no different. 13 Blue The U13 Blue team started the day and were victorious against a very determined St Andrews Cathedral school. The team played extremely well to lead at the break and despite falling behind late in the second half the boys lifted to take the lead and win with some very exciting attacking plays late in the second half. Thank you to Mr Giles and Kosta Baratsas for filling in as the coaches in the absence of Mr Georgoulopoulos.

28

The boys Open team have shown a willingness and determination to meet the challenge of trying to reverse last years disappointing exit at the semi finals. It has been a real pleasure watching the boys perform and train at school. At the beginning of the year the boys agreed that the most appropriate team goal was to go one further and reach an ISA Final and win the Greek Orthodox Colleges event to be held in May 7th, 8th and 9th 2014. At this stage the boys are on track to realise their potential. It is with anticipation and excitement that I look forward to watching the boys perform.

14 White The U14 White team continued to be impressive with their dominant display against St Stanislaus. The boys are playing a very structured game of Basketball and are definitely showing signs that they are ready to step up and avenge their loss to St Patricks College in round 1. Our U14 White team goal was to try and win 4 matches in a row and the boys did exactly that by winning the game 44-14. Kyriakos Kladakis top scored with 15 Points and Panos Bounos scored 8 Points with 6 steals. This helps the boys overall position on the overall standings. Billy Retsas

This week some of the boy’s teams will be travelling to Bathurst to play St Stanislaus to make up for the game lost in round 1 because of the fires. As this was the last home game I would like to thank all parents for their support and help in raising the profile of school sport at St Spyridon College. Your help, kind generosity and donations have to date helped to shape what is arguably one of the most successful seasons of Basketball thus far. I would also like to thank Barry Rallis for his very kind donation of the seafood that was prepared for our Opens and for sale at the SPACe. This significant donation from the seafood store ‘The one that got away’ in Bondi helps with providing support to sport, further adding to the ability of the school to host the elaborate afternoon tea that it has managed for our most senior team.

15 White The U15 white team were riding on a high with two consecutive wins and while the early signs were positive St Stanislaus with the extra height were able to out muscle our boys and win rebounds more easily allowing for easy baskets. The team now have the opportunity to work hard at training to try and bounce back against the same opponents in this week’s game.

I would also like to thank all the staff for their commitment and enthusiasm both at training and on game day. A special thank you to Mr Zafiropoulos for his continued support of sport as well as Mr Meintanis and Ms O’Shea who has attended the last two home games for the boys to assist with preparations and offer support.

Opens The Open boys were the highlight of the day, the boys continued to perform at the highest level and their skilful attributes both individually and as a team were too much for their opponents. Adonis Tsoustas had one of his best games of the year and his positive contributions helped the team maintain their unbeaten run throughout the year.

On behalf of Ms O’ Shea and myself, we would like to extend to all families a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year.

PAST STUDENTS BOYS FUTSAL GAME FRIDAY 22ND NOVEMBER Sport is important for many reasons namely, helps to improve health and wellbeing, helps to sharpen your mind, teaches you to be alert, but perhaps one of the most significant benefits of sport is that it helps to bring people together to create camaraderie and that is what was achieved last Friday evening when 26 past students attended the first old boys game of Futsal. It is hoped that this event will be an annual one with the intention of uniting our past students and celebrating their success outside school but also giving them an opportunity to continue to add to the sports programme that many of them helped to shape and support in their school years. Our aspiring Open boys Futsal team played against boys that graduated from the college as far back as 2003 and while they were beaten convincingly the day was not about winning or losing. This day was a reminder to our current students that our students love their College and are always willing to return to contribute to the school that helped shape their lives. As the sports coordinators Ms O’Shea and I are very passionate about uniting our students to honour them but at the same time create a sense of unity and community in this great school. I thank Manuel Kambos, Alex Vatiliotis and Christopher Stasos for their support in arranging this great initiative. Next year the plan is to build on this event and have teams register as per their year of graduation. I would like to extend a big thank you to Ms O’ Shea who stayed behind and cooked all the food for the boys to have afternoon tea. Also a big thank you to all the boys for their kind financial contribution to the Sports department. If there are past students who would like to be involved next year, I would ask that you please contact either Mr Kaldis or Ms O’ Shea at the College.

GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUND 5 and 6 Open A’s Round 5 the girls travelled to Bowral to play their second game against Chevalier. Their first Round match ended in extra time being narrowly defeated, however, the girls travelled to Chevalier with a full squad determined to win. With their best game of the season the girls defeated Chevalier 53-35 the first time in ISA history that St Spyridon has defeated Chevalier firsts Basketball team a massive achievement.

Intermediate A’s Round 5 the girls travelled to Bowral to play their second game against Chevalier. Perhaps one of the most physical matches the girls have had to endure. Although defeated the girls displayed immense passion and desire to win throughout the whole match. The girls discovered that at times in Basketball the physical nature of the game can sometimes outweigh skill.

Round 6 the girls left in the early hours to travel to Blue Mountains to play BMGS a must needed win to cement their position in the competition. Unfortunately, the girls were defeated. Their opposition team consisted of two players exceeding 190cm in height, but with further preparation and improved execution hopefully the girls can achieve a more favourable result next time they meet. The opposition coach praised the efforts of Natalie Michos one of our smallest players in her successful efforts to rebound the ball against the tall opponents.

Round 6 the girls also travelled to Blue Mountains to play BMGS the only team undefeated in this division. This did not deter the girls, they commenced the game well. The game remained very close with BMGS ahead most of the match until the last 3 mins where momentum changed as the team pressed their defence and Georgia Koukounaris successfully found her way to the basket resulting in taking the lead with 1 minute on the clock. Unfortunately, with a team fouls at maximum we were unable to hold the lead with BMGS making some game winning shots.

Open C’s Round 5 the girls travelled to Bowral to play their second game against Oxley College. The girls continue to persevere each week and have grown in confidence as the season progresses. Unfortunately defeated 32-8, the girls efforts are to be commended. Round 6 the girls travelled to Oakhill College. Yet to secure a win this most certainly was their best chance. The addition of Anja Djukic to the team has definitely lifted team morale and proved to be an advantage as she formed close team dynamics with Theoni Thimakis. The girls defeated Oakhill College 20-15 truly a rewarding end to the season.

This team despite not winning many matches have competed in some very close matches only being defeated by small margins which reinforces their place in Division 1. Their performances on the court and their continual effort at training are to be commended.

31

patience and strategy during close matches worthwhile lessons needed to compete in Semi-final games.

Intermediate B’s Round 5 the girls travelled to Bowral to play their second game against Oxley College. Defeated last time the girls were determined to win. With the addition of Chrystal Christie the girls have most certainly become a stronger unit which was evident as they were able to defeat Oxley in a close match 16-11.

Round 6 the girls also woke in the early hours to play at Blue Mountains Grammar their furthest travel for the season. They were able to watch both the Intermediate and Open A teams which was a worthwhile experience and no doubt inspired them to play to their potential defeating BMGS .

Round 6 the girls played a mid- week clash against St Andrews Cathedral School. Unfortunately defeated. However, improvements in their offensive skills and team cohesion are evident. Eve Barton continues to stand out in defence and Katie Thimakis and Chrystal Christie show their abilities to intercept the ball. Overall, these little improvements each week will no doubt see further results in the back end of the season. Junior B’S Round 5 the girls travelled to Bowral to play their second game against Chevalier. Unfortunately defeated their efforts are to be praised as each week they continue to persevere and play their best despite the score. Round 6 play an Grammar rewarded BMGS.

Finally, thank you to all students, parents and teachers for your involvement and dedication to sport. Wishing you a Happy Christmas and a well-deserved break.

the girls woke in the early hours to 8am game at Blue Mountains but their efforts and dedication were with their second victory defeating

Junior C’s Round 5 the girls travelled to Bowral to play their second game against Oxley College. In the second round of games especially in the younger years the level of improvement in skill and knowledge of the game is clearly evident. The fact that these St Spyridon girls were undefeated also places a target and extra motivation to defeat them. This most certainly was the case as Oxley College defeated the girls 22-18 in a nail bitting match. Although disappointing for the girls to endure their first loss, a lot can be learnt from the defeat such as

Ms K. O’Shea (Girls Sport) and Mr F. Kaldis (Boys Sport)
