Over the last few days, I believe you have begun to appreciate how great your impact has been on the people in your school community. The younger students spoke about you with such admiration and affection. They described you as their older brothers and sisters. They told you how they looked up to you and how proud they are of all your achievements.

The Rev. Fathers, the Parish President and Board Chairman Mr Phillips, Mrs Tsaconas, everyone here is proud to share this evening with you. As His Grace Bishop Iakovos said at the close of the Thanksgiving Service dedicated to your graduation, we are all here for you. You are our present joy and our future hope. We say that our school days are the best days of our lives. Mrs Katsogiannis always qualifies this, “most days”. I guess we say this because the time we spend at school is substantial and significant for the rest of our lives.

Some of you have been together since Kindy. I remember you tottering up the ramp, all eyes, carrying your impossibly heavy back packs. A few of you bravely held back the tears, others stood and posed for a last minute photo, before going to your first class. You did not all start at St Spyridon College, but you all quickly became ours, through your individual virtues, your intellect and your strength of character. You brought your own brand of humour and sense of fun to the mix. It has been a privilege, to see all of you step up to every challenge, with passion, energy, and determination. It has been a joy to see your talents unfold. Truly you have lived up to our motto – Αιέν Αριστεύειν. Congratulations each and every one of you. How blessed are we, in your choice of student leaders! Eleni Mavrolefteros, Captain; Yianna Criticos, Vice Captain; Panayioti Kapodistrias, Senior Prefect; Nicholas Baratsas and Cassandra Georgiou, Sports Captains; The Prefect Body. All of you, outstanding ambassadors and formidable allies. Fifteen of you, are the babies of your family – so tonight we farewell not only you but also your wonderful parents who have been part of our St Spyridon family for many years. The world now awaits. And what an adventure is before you! We have every confidence that you will embrace every opportunity to excel. His Grace reminded you that outside the safety of our school gates, you will be tested – many times. The world is a beautiful and exciting place. But life is full of danger. Tread carefully, and beware of the wolf in sheep’s clothing. Stand well, and remember who you are. In Christ’s words so evident tonight, as we look around this space, “You are the light of the world.” Let your light shine for the good of all humanity, my beloved students. You go with our blessing. Go out into the world and make it a better place for all of us. And we hope that in the future, you will remember us with kindness, for you shall be forever in our hearts and in our prayers.

JUNIOR SCHOOL REPORT With the completion of three quarters of the academic year, it is fitting that we recognise and applaud all students for gains made be it academic, sporting or in terms of their personal growth. I take this opportunity to wish you an enjoyable holiday and look forward to your safe and invigorated return in Term Four.
BEST WISHES Our best wishes are extended to Mr Dookie's youngest son Yashiv, who is also sitting for the HSC this year. We wish him every happiness and success.
PLAQUE UNVEILING
FAREWELL YEAR 12
Last Wednesday, Mayor of Randwick, Scott Nash and Deputy Mayor Anthony Andrews presented the Parish and School with a plaque to commemorate the naming of Mary Hamer Lane. We were grateful to have our reverend Fathers, members of the Parish Committee as well as Peter, Anthony, Lydia, Dennis and Christopher Hamer present as well as many parents. Mrs Hamer lives on in the hearts of all those she touched but with this plaque, she will be remembered for future generations. We thank the council for recognising this extraordinary Greek Orthodox educator.
It was an honour and a privilege to share the farewell events with Year 12 last week. The Doxology Service, Year 12 Assembly and Formal Dinner demonstrated how loved and supported our students are. The prayers of us all at the Junior School go with you Year 12 as you take your place in the world. We wish you every happiness and success.

DEBATING 2014
This year, 136 St Spyridon students from Years 3-6 participated in the ICAS (English). Those students whose achievements were outstanding were rewarded with Certificates of Merit, Credit and Distinction. Overall, 13 Merit, 16 Credit and 3 Distinction Certificates were awarded. Well done to all students who participated.
Congratulations to all students who competed at Kambala and also participated in other representative debating teams in 2014. Your content and manner of delivering points has greatly improved over the year of competition and a refinement of rebuttals and timing were very important in ensuring a close result every week!
Congratulations to the following outstanding achievers:
Thank you to the staff, Mrs Gambierakis and Mrs Economou, who managed and encouraged debating students throughout this year. Your dedication towards preparing the students each week is admirable. The students selected to compete were always keen to be involved and well-behaved.

P & F JUNIOR SCHOOL WALKATHON Not even the weather could dampen our enthusiasm on Tuesday as we gathered at Jellicoe Park for the walkathon. After an early shower and blustering winds, the weather fined up to allow our children to walk and enjoy a day outdoors where they could play freely all those games that they enjoy playing. The children were very well behaved and really got into the spirit of the day with most completing at least 5 laps of the park. Many averaged 10 – 15 laps. My thanks are extended to the teachers for taking up the challenge and encouraging their children to walk and for also bringing various pieces of sporting equipment for the children to use.
15
This day would not have been possible without the efforts of the tireless P & F committee who set up, cooked 500 + sausages, fed us all and stamped the cards of the participant for each lap as the children walked around. We acknowledge that many of these mums arrived well before 8am and didn’t leave until 2:30pm. The day is a success because of the love you have for our children and College. A most enjoyable day was had by all! The P & F have several prizes to award to the children that raise the most funds and to the class that returns their money first. Please ensure all sponsorship money is returned by the 9th of October to be eligible for a prize.
THE KINDERGARTEN INTERVIEW No single or simple factor determines whether a child is ready for Kindergarten. Instead, a child’s development needs to be evaluated from a number of perspectives. Being able to think logically, speak clearly, and interact with others are all critically important skills for the commencement of school. A child’s physical and emotional development is of equal importance. In reality very few children are equally competent in all these areas. Many children who may be advanced academically may lag behind emotionally, whilst children who are adept physically may be slower in terms of language development. The Kindergarten interview was developed for use prior to starting Kindergarten in order to make observations of some of these skills. Amongst the skills assessed are fine motor development, understanding of verbal directions, visual perception and discrimination, rudimentary number identification and impulse control.
16
Can put on and take off jumpers, shoes socks independently www.keeplearningeducation.com.au
Honest feedback along with any observation of concern is then discussed confidentially with the child’s parents. Early intervention may be required for matters such as speech, eyesight, hearing, or fine motor development, and need to be assessed by health care professionals who will either confirm or allay any concern ensuring all students have the best possible start to Kindergarten.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE
The benefits to be had by working together in the best interest of the child are immeasurable and can only be actualised when communication is open, based on integrity and premised by the realisation that we are all on the same team. Language Skills Speaks clearly and in complete sentences about familiar objects and events Answers and asks simple questions Expresses their needs Follows two- or three-step instructions Recognises their own name Knows that words are what you read and knows that words have meanings. Uses books for enjoyment or for looking at pictures Can sit still to listen to a story for a few minutes and recall events and characters Recognises and names colours Joins in singing familiar songs and rhymes
The Premier’s Reading Challenge was officially closed to students on the 21st August and to the coordinators on the 31st August. After this time there was no access to the Reading Challenge site. Unfortunately a number of children brought in their completed forms after the due date and therefore were not included in this years’ Challenge. These children will still receive certificates, but will not be recognised officially by the Premier’s Reading Challenge team. Thank you to the students who have completed the Challenge this year. It is wonderful to see so many children taking part from Kindergarten to Year 6. The certificates will be awarded towards the end of Term 4. Mrs C. Bartlett Librarian

The two-week ‘Live Outside the Box’ Challenge concluded on Sunday 31st August. 141 students from K-6 accepted the challenge to eat healthier and become more active. Well done to these students for striving to improve their health! Congratulations to 3S for being the class with the highest number of participants. Congratulations also to Emmanuel Moros from 1T for completing the challenge on 307 points, the highest score in the school! We especially applaud Miss Sirmanoglou for completing the challenge herself, and thank her for being a great ‘healthy-lifestyle ambassador’ for our school.
Physical Skills Uses scissors to cut along a straight line Enjoys a variety of indoor and outdoor play Can run, jump, catch, balance and dance
All students who completed the challenge will receive a Gold, Silver or Bronze certificate, according to the number of points they scored.

TIPS FOR HEALTHY FAMILY LIFESTYLES There has been an increase in the number of children who are overweight or obese. Why? There are numerous reasons, but some include: Children are eating more high fat and sugar snacks and less fruit and vegetables. For information about the 5 steps to a healthy lifestyle see www.healthykids.nsw.gov.au/ Busy families rely more on takeaway and snack foods. Children are being driven to and from school instead of walking. Children are spending more time being sedentary, eg watching TV, and playing computer and video games. Children are spending less time in outside play.
19
May God always bless you.
What families can do? Be a good role model. Even if it is difficult to have a proper family meal each night, try to plan two or three nights per week where you can all sit down together. Involve children in food preparation and shopping to inform them of healthy eating choices. In summer, select one night where the family goes for a walk together. Try to place some foods, eg vegetables, in the middle of the table at mealtimes so children can select foods in the quantities they want. Encourage water as a thirst quencher instead of soft drink and other sugar containing drinks. Always eat healthy breakfasts to keep the metabolism going and to prevent poor morning snack choices. Let members of the family have their say about main meals they really like, and those they don’t, and try to incorporate some of their ideas. No food should be banned or called ‘bad’ or ‘unhealthy’. Instead some foods are eaten as ‘every day’ foods and others as ‘sometimes’ foods. Discourage eating in front of the TV or computer, as this encourages ‘non-hungry’ eating.
TERM 2 Term 2 begins on Wednesday, 8th October, 2014 with a WEEK B timetable. Students are to wear their Summer uniform.
OUT OF THE ART ROOM INTO THE CHINESE GARDENS Recently Year 9 Visual Art students went on an excursion to the city. We were very lucky that the weather was perfect that day. Firstly, we went to the Chinese Gardens to complete some drawing exercises and after lunch in Chinatown, we visited the Tabaimo exhibition at the MCA. Tabaimo is a contemporary Japanese artist who uses Ukiyo-e techniques combined with video technology. This relates directly to themes that Year 9 have been studying. Now that the students are back in class, they are channelling the spirit of ‘wabi sabi’ in some large scale paintings.

STUDENT LEADERS Farewell Year 12
Πρόγραμμα ανταλλαγής μαθητών
Student Council Representatives from Year 7 to Year 11 delivered warm farewell messages to our departing Year 12 who are now at the end of their formal schooling at St Spyridon College. At the special Farewell Assembly held on Thursday last week, our youngest students presented Year 12 with cards they had made filled with well wishes for the future. It was a heartwarming to witness Year 7’s with siblings and cousins in Year 12 share this event together. Congratulations also needs to be given to all the students form Year 7 to Year 10 who volunteered to be part of the choir for the Year 12 Doxology held last week.
LEGACY COLLECTION 2014 Last week Year 9 SRC’s along with Ms Barbouttis and Mr Condous spent the day at Pacific Square collecting for Legacy. Altogether $502 was collected. following students:

SENIOR SCHOOL STUDENTS VOLUNTEER On the 31st of August 2014, I was fortunate enough to participate in the fundraising dinner held at St Spyridon Church Hall ‘Come for Africa Dinner’. This function was supported by around 400 people including staff members from our school. I offered my services as a volunteer along with others from our school including Issac and Jacob Mavrolefteros from Year 10.
YEAR 12 REMINDERS University Applications Parents of year 12 students please check that your child has : Submitted his/her application for university through the UAC website www.uac.edu.au This needs to be done by 30th September to avoid late fees.
We were there from 8:00am to help set up all the tables, chairs, decorations, preparing the food and serving the food at dinner (all food and drinks were kindly donated by Moo Fish and various other companies). The younger Mavrolefteros children from Years 7 and 8 were given the opportunity to sell raffle tickets.
Notre Dame University Students must apply directly to Notre Dame, using their application form, by 30th September, if they wish to be considered for 2015 courses. Scholarships Most scholarship applications are also due by 30th September.
The other volunteers from other Parishes were a great help during the night whilst serving the food, sweets and helping with the drinks. This was our way of contributing to the cause of supporting the Africans who are suffering from not only food shortages, but also the most serious EBOLA disease.

Stavrou and Katherine Tsingos to attend. Miss Sirmanoglou supervised us on the day. We arrived just before 09:00am to check in. We received pens, rulers and lanyards, which had our names written on them. There were three activities throughout the day. There was the MatChoice, the MatRace and the MatOperator. All the schools were split into three different coloured teams; Blue, Orange and Green teams. St Spyridon was in the Blue team. The first activity for the Blue team was the MatRace. There were 12 activities to be completed in a time limit of 50 minutes. There were iPad games, coin games and lots of other maths puzzles to solve. At first they looked easy, but some were actually very difficult. We then had recess and then it was time for MatChoice. This was a 45 minute exam consisting of 21 multiple choice questions. The last activity we had was the MatChoice. We had 6 numbers and a target number. We had to use the numbers only once, yet not all of them. There were 6 questions worth 20 point each. It was quite hard.

DEBATING GALA DAY REVIEW 2014 On the 12th September, St. Spyridon participated in the Debating Gala Day of 2014 held at Kambala School. The Junior School entered two teams: one affirmative and one negative. The Gala Day was a chance to show our improved skills; while team mates watched on in support in the audience.
Then it was lunch. All five of us consumed a very tasty, large $2.50 Pizza. After lunch it was the finals. Out of 94 groups (consisting of 3 students in each group), only 6 groups with the highest scores made it to the finals. We didn’t make it sadly. There were also audience questions and Nicholas won one of them and received a very exciting Smiggle pack. The finals consisted of 20 questions and the groups only had one minute to work out each question. St Johns Park won the Maths Cup 2014. Each group member and their teacher received an iPad Air and a $2000 cheque for their school.
The topic for the affirmative team was: That charity should begin at home. The affirmative team members in speaking order were: Patricia Hardas, Katherine Tsingos, Teoni Antonopoulos and Michael Vlahakis. This was a challenging topic and we competed very well with strong points. Unfortunately, we lost this debate. The topic for the opposing team was: That junk food advertising should be banned. This team’s members in order of speaking were: Jameson Gouveros, Thomas Mouratidis, Nicholas Drakoulis and Steven Mangafas.
Overall, it was a great and exciting day to remember and we were all happy to be a part of it!!! Nicki Kondou and Katherine Tsingos Year 6P

STAGE 3 LUNA PARK EXCURSION On Friday 7th of September, Years 5 and 6 went on a Mathematics excursion to Luna Park. It was superenjoyable! We all departed school at 9:30 on a bus. We completed the assigned Math-focus booklet given to us for Luna Park. It included fun questions about height, length, cost and so much more interesting Maths concepts. We loved completing the booklet activities! One of our favourite questions was guessing how many light bulbs were in Luna Park. We found out that the carousel has 21 000 lights! In addition, we went on most of the rides which was extremely pleasurable for all students. Even some of the teachers went on rides, too! Our favourite rides were The Hair Raiser, The Wild Mouse and Tumble Bug. Overall, the day was very enjoyable and lots of fun. The whole group of students in Stage 3 had an awesome day out. We loved it! Dominique Koukos and Katherine Tsingos 6P
Whaling- What a joke! Whaling for science: What a joke. Harpoon to the head. Killing an innocent whale. The young one watches as her mother dies. Then the young, sold for money. Whales are intelligent mammals; almost extinct because of how much whaling has happened. A harpoon to the head will kill a whale but if you miss, it will suffer horrible pain. Killing whales is horrible.
29
Whales are important and intelligent mammals. If you kill whales faster than they can reproduce, the ecosystem will go out of balance. Plankton will surely exist in plague proportions because the whales won’t exist anymore to eat tonnes of them fast enough. The plankton will force fish to move away or die out and consequently humans will have to change their diet. Whales are important because they maintain the delicate balance in our ecosystem. Whaling is a joke because it is killing whales for money and not thinking about the nature.
JUNIOR SCHOOL P&F WALKATHON
In some places whaling is illegal; but people still do it for money. People whale in places that it is illegal or international waters. They hunt any species of whale, even if it is endangered. These whales are becoming closer and closer to extinction. If this occurs, their species of whales won’t be able to play their part on the ocean’s ecosystem. People would not be able to observe and study them as they swim through the ocean. Whaling is a joke especially when whalers do it illegally and for money. When they hunt the whales that are caught, the meat and other body parts are sent for sale before they are even cleaned properly. Someone might buy whale products and get really sick. Death will be quick for the whale and you.
A fun filled active day for all! The dark, heavy, grey clouds and the light shower did not stop our eager walkers who have countless sponsors waiting to fund their 700 metre laps of Jellicoe Park, Pagewood. Some impressive walkers reached as high as 30 laps of the park. However walking was not the only sport of the day – cricket, soccer and other activities took place in the centre of the park in order to stagger groups to walk at a comfortable pace. The Infants enjoyed some quality time on the park’s play equipment which was their greatest highlight of the day. P&F provided a sausage in a roll, a drink and a sweet treat to all the hungry walkers. A big thank you to the Mrs Synesios, Mr Dookie, Mrs Kipriotis, Ms McCarthy and all the staff who did a brilliant job to organise this event and supervise our children with great care. Thank you to Mrs Stefanou and Mrs Tsaconas who took time out of their other commitments to offer their support earlier in the day.
In addition, whaling weapons and ships have been upgraded with newer technology. When people used to kill whales, they used to use hand spears but now they use deadly harpoon shotguns and shoot them square in the head. If they hit the body of the whale it suffers slow and horrible pain until it dies. Imagine being at the end of that piercing harpoon. WOULD YOU LIKE THAT? I wouldn’t. Whaling is horrible; if whalers miss the target or even if they do hit the target it is still lethal.
We thank all the P&F members who attended and prepared for this event as well as some members and parents who made some generous donations. Thank you also to parents who came to encourage our walkers and took a day off work to bond with their children and assist with the day.
My final point is that some people kill whales for scientific reasons. Okay, but where is all the scientific information and results? And why aren’t they publishing the results online? What do you need to study a dead whale for? Why not observe a living one? Also why does all the blubber and meat end up on the black market?
We urge all our walkers now to approach their sponsors in the holidays and collect money in order to be ready to return it to their class teachers by 9th October in Term 4. Those students with the highest collections will be placed in the running for three major technology based prizes donated by the P&F Committee. Entries not received by this date will not be eligible for the prizes.
In conclusion, whaling is bad because people do it for money: for pure profit. People have made weapons and ships better and kill more whales more quickly. I hate the fact many more whales are being killed now compared to before. Whales are essential for the ecosystem to survive. Whaling is a joke of a thing to do. No one is laughing.
Good luck with your sponsors! Mrs M. Pascalis P&F Committee

The students have been training for over 4 weeks in order to prepare for the annual event. The Athletics Carnival provides an opportunity for our students to compete against all other ISA schools and be chosen on the basis of their performance to represent the ISA in the CIS carnival. Last year was one of the most successful years in Athletics with 4 students from the College selected to represent the ISA at the CIS carnival. shield winners as well as the Open Boys basketball champion winners for season 2013-2014.
The boys and girls showed incredible self-belief and a real desire to excel, this desire and enthusiasm was perhaps most evident in the junior boys relay as the boys finished a very close second and secured valuable double points for the team.
BASKETBALL TEAMS
Congratulations to all the squad and students for making this years ISA carnival one of the most successful ever.
All Basketball teams have been selected for both boys and girls. All families are asked to ensure that the registration sheets are returned by the end of the school week to either Ms O’Shea or Mr Kaldis. Draft draws will be finalised and emailed out to families in the coming weeks.
As a result of the students efforts our College secured its first ever Shield in Athletics winning the Overall Junior Boys Shield – an achievement matched by no other St Spyridon group before them. This success follows from our successful junior boys swimming champions in the pool earlier in the ear and the successful overall division 2 soccer championship
Students will be informed at school when basketball uniforms become available at the uniform shop. At this stage the uniforms will most probably become available first week back after the break.
