ST SPYRIDON COLLEGE HONOURS THE ANZACS 100 YEARS ANZAC DAY COMMEMORATIONS Anzac Day, which is officially celebrated on the 25th April, provides us with the opportunity to:Reflect on the cost of freedom To honour and respect the soldiers who fought bravely, and Acknowledge the values that define our Australian identity.

As a result of this year being the 100 Year Anniversary of the Gallipoli Campaign, a number of our student leaders attended a variety of commemorative events to honour the contribution of those who fought and made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.

On Sunday, 19th April, Ms Kokinelis, Dean of Middle School and SRC’s from Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 represented the school at a March and Remembrance ceremony organised by Maroubra RSL–sub branch.

The Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park, on Wednesday 23rd April, Mrs Gambriell and Year 11 Modern History students attended the RSL and Schools Remember ANZAC Commemoration Service.

At the Senior School on Friday, 24th April, Dr V. Hickie, Curriculum Leader English and History, organised a whole school special Anzac Day assembly. Various Year 10 students read excerpts from letters, war accounts and poems written by soldiers.

At the Dawn Service at Maroubra on Saturday, 25th April, 2015 Ms Kokinelis, Ms Kalithrakas and Prefects attended and laid a wreath.

At St Spyridon Church - with reverence our student leaders commemorated the Anzacs at a moving service conducted by the Very Reverend Father Steven on the 26th April. The sacrifice of those who served will live on as long as we remember them. Lest we forget.

KINGSFORD-SMITH AWARDS FOR LEADERSHIP On 22nd April the Hon. Matt Thistlethwaite, Member for Kingsford-Smith presented Student Leaders K-12 with an Award of recognition.

He congratulated them for their efforts and good example and praised St Spyridon College for cultivating future leaders.

The College Captain, Christos Raptis, gave the vote of thanks at the close of the presentation.

The Honourable Matt Thistlethwaite, Federal Member for Kingsford-Smith. Thank you all for taking the time to be here today. Today, on behalf of the whole school community, I would like to thank Mr Thistlethwaite for being a great and loyal friend to the College.

Over recent years, you have been an important member of our school community and for that, we are forever thankful. Your strong allegiance to the school was evident when you took time out of your busy schedule and marched with our school on arguably one of the most important days in the Greek Orthodox calendar, the dual celebration of the 25th of March. We as students take note of this, and again we thank you.

Seeing political figures like yourself being proactive in the commuity inspires any of us young leaders to do exactly the same. At both the Junior and Senior School, programs are in place to encourage students to take up leadership roles and challenge those to push the barriers and stand up for what is right. Our school motto translates to “Forever Excelling” and as student leaders; we try to live by this and strive the best we can for the school. One of our student principles state “We contribute to the life of our Church and community, and exercise our responsibilities as citizens of a Democratic nation, always obeying the rule of law.” I believe this is not only what our student leaders should abide by, but also every student of this College. This can only be done through the inspiration of our families, teachers and political figures such as yourself in the community. So once again on behalf of the whole school community I would like to thank you once more Mr Thistlethwaite for being a part of the St Spyridon family and we hope that your association with the College lasts for many years to come.

ACER Scholarship Winner Year 7, 2016 – Year 10, 2019

Congratulations to Taylor Marinos of Connells Point Public School, who has been granted the 2016 four year scholarship to St Spyridon College.

Christ is risen from the dead, by death trampling on death, and on those in the tombs bestowing life.

The scholarships are based on the results of ACER Scholarship exams held on 2nd March and 28th February, 2015. There was a strong field of candidates from other primary schools, our Year 6 and Year 10 students.

Congratulations to Constantinos Kollias and Joel Dean who have each been granted a two year Scholarship for continued study in Years 11 and 12 on the basis of the ACER Examinations.

INTRODUCTION OF NEW CASUAL BUS PASSES As of 4th May, if a student requires a casual bus pass they will no longer be issued by the school offices. Parents will need to call the Parish Office on 9313-6899 and leave their details.

The Parish Office will then issue a Casual Bus Pass when they have paid.

The students will be able to travel on the bus without a pass for the first couple of weeks. If a parent has paid for a pass recently, the cost of the pass will be deducted from their invoice.

CONGRATULATIONS Our congratulations are extended to Mrs Papadimatos (nee: Papathomas HSC 2005) and her husband Aaron (HSC 2005), both students of the College, on their marriage in the school holidays. We wish them every happiness in their new life together.

UNSW RESEARCH PROJECT We are very proud to announce that our College has been selected to participate in a research project that will contribute to new knowledge on the acquisition of Mathematical concepts.

The findings of the study, to be undertaken by Year Two students, have the potential to improve children’s future understanding of place value concepts and their applications to the number system.

AEDC Our Kindergarten teachers will be contributing to the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC), which is a nationwide census of early childhood development and helps our school and community understand how children are developing before they start school. The AEDC is an Australian Government initiative run by the Department of Education and Training and will run from May to June.

WINTER UNIFORM A reminder that blazers are compulsory and must be worn to and from School.

On days students are allowed to come wearing sports uniform e.g. Wednesday ISA training, students must wear their full tracksuit.

All grant recipients were announced and presented with their cheque at a celebratory gathering at Randwick Community Centre on Wednesday 29 April, at the Principals and Head Teachers meeting with the Mayor of Randwick, Cr Ted Seng.

Christ is Risen GOOD FRIDAY Congratulations to the students of Year 10 who chanted the Engomia at St Spyridon Church on Good Friday evening. Thank you to Mr Picardi for preparing, Mr Condous and Ms Kokinelis for supporting the students. Mrs Lucas led the Choir on the night.

The Council’s ‘Food and Native Garden’ grant program aims to support local schools with grant funding to establish food gardens and/or native gardens in their grounds. The program additionally aims to support students’ learning experiences in the areas of food growing, healthy food options and native plant identification, with the purpose of bringing hands-on learning beyond the classroom and across the entire school curriculum.

Thanks to the initiative and vision of students such as our Junior School Captain, Billy Bourdaniotis, who proposed the idea of a food garden in our school grounds, combined with the support and contribution of Randwick City Council, our food garden dreams are sprouting!

The proposed site for the food garden is an unused area in the Junior School, located between the canteen and the Year 2 classrooms.

LEADERSHIP ANZAC DAY COOKIES Last Friday after our special school ANZAC DAY assembly the SRC’s sold specially packaged Anzac Cookies. Biscuits such as these were sent to the original soldiers who were away at war, as a treat and reminder of home. Altogether over $300 was raised. The proceeds will be donated to Legacy on behalf of the school. Well done to all SRC’s who made and donated cookies and to all who purchased them.

SRC LEADERSHIP DAY On Thursday, 23rd April, 2015, a special whole day event ‘SRC Leadership Day’ was held to assist SRC’s become more familiar with their roles as student leaders. The program was facilitated by ‘Burn Bright’ organization.

There were three sessions dividing the day. The focus for Session 1 – was Leadership Team Building > Connecting, building positive relationships, exploring the role of SRC’s.

15/7/2004 Αγαπητό μου ημερολόγιο, Ούτε κι εγώ ξέρω πού βρήκα την όρεξη για να σου γράψω σήμερα! Έχω υπερβολική αγωνία και τρομερό άγχος για τους Αγώνες αύριο. Τόσα χρόνια προπόνηση, τόσα χρόνια θυσία, τόσα χρόνια με στόχους υψηλούς και τώρα ήρθε η ώρα μου για ν’ αποδείξω τις ικανότητες και τη δύναμή μου σε όλους. Δεν θέλω να σε ζαλίσω με πολυλογίες, θα σου πω λίγα και καλά για να θυμάσαι και να θυμάμαι αυτή τη στιγμή για πολλά χρόνια. Ίσως να μην μου ξαναδοθεί τέτοια ευκαιρία ποτέ στη ζωή μου. Γι’ αυτό πρέπει τώρα να κάνω κάτι ώστε να μπορώ να δείχνω κάποτε στα παιδιά μου τι θυσίες έκανα για τον αθλητισμό και πού έφτασα με τις θυσίες αυτές! Φοβάμαι πολύ για αύριο, αλλά ο ψυχολόγος μου, μου έχει τονίσει επανειλημμένως να μην φοβάμαι, να προσέχω στη δουλειά μου και να αφοσιώνομαι μόνο στον εαυτό μου, στο ταλέντο μου και στο ρολόι. Αυτό θα προσπαθήσω να κάνω. Ο ανταγωνισμός, μάλλον η άμιλλα είναι τρομερή! Οι καλύτερες αθλήτριες από την Αμερική, τη Γερμανία, τη Ρωσία, την Αφρική και από άλλες χώρες θα τρέξουν στον ίδιο αγώνα με μένα. BOYS BASKETBALL On Wednesday 22nd April the boys First V basketball team competed in a trial game against former St Spyridon students in an effort to prepare for the upcoming Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia National Schools Event to be hosted by St Euphemia College.

A reminder that all families will be receiving regular information via email on a weekly basis provided a registration form has been submitted.

BILL TURNER CUP

The boys began training last Saturday 18th April and will continue over the next couple of weeks in order to try and win back to back titles.

On Friday 24th April the St Spyridon U15 team selected to represent the College in the Bill Turner competed against Rose Bay Secondary College. The team played well in the first half taking a 1-0 lead into half time. That said the boys should have easily scored two or three more goals. In the second half the boys came out and scored an early goal through Stephen Stamoulis who had bagged the earlier goal. At 2-0 the boys showed a lack of urgency in defence and not before long Rose Bay secondary College came back with two opportunistic goals to level the game. The game went into golden goal and again the boys created two of the best chances of the game but were unable to consolidate. Their third chance proved to be the difference with Steven Stamoulis again standing up to be counted and securing the boys first win in the Bill Turner

This event was a great success and now there is a real opportunity to build on this for future years. A former students’ basketball game in boys sport would add value to the already rich sports programme that is gaining more momentum every year. The three boys that were present included Kosta Baratsas who is currently studying a Bachelor of Computer Science and Technology, Nikolas Baratsas studying a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts as well as Luka Kasalovic who is studying a Bachelor of Science/Arts in Biotechnology.

NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM – LITERACY AND NUMERACY 2015 Letter to Parents In May 2015 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy skills of students across Australian schools.

The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard.

Background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will be collected as part of the National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student’s right to privacy is maintained.

The NAPLAN tests will be conducted from 12th – 14th May, 2015.

In Yeas 7 and 9 there will be two Numeracy tests: one where a calculator is allowed and one where calculators are not to be used. For the calculator test, the student should use the calculator that they currently use at school.

Students may be considered for exemption from the tests if:  they are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language background other than English, or  they have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions which severely limit their capacity to participate in the tests.

All other students are expected to participate in the tests. Disability adjustments which reflect the student’s normal level of support in the classroom may be provided.
