P & F NEWS

WELCOME TO OUR 2016 COMMITTEE! The Parents & Friends Association Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday 23rd February in Doran House and celebrated the impressive fundraising achievements of the 2015 committee. The forum was well supported and attended by the College and Parish Executive. It was addressed by our Head of College, Mrs Stefanou-Haag who was, as always, inspirational with her warm, wise words, her praise and recognition of the strong team spirit and great commitment shown by such a small parent body. This was a great invitation to our interested newcomers who joined the new committee for 2016 promising a bright fresh wave of ideas.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Taverna Night on the Beach - Saturday 5th March, 2016 at 6:30pm - Yarra Bay Sailing Club. The popularity of this event is indicative of its SOLD-OUT status which promises to be a great success launching into 2016, with song, dance and good food for all the family… OPA! Flyer has been circulated to students, with full details. Please also refer to College Facebook page. Contacts: Erenie-0410318053 Anna-0405683320

During the meeting, the President’s and Treasurer’s reports presented and overviewed our annual events and activities for 2015 including: Trivia night, Easter stalls & Raffle, Palm Sunday Lunch, Mothers’ Day Stalls, Mothers’ Day Dinner & Raffles , Athletics Carnival Stall, Fathers’ Day Stalls, Fathers’ Day Breakfast & Raffles, Open Day, Cinema Evening, JS Showcase Stall, as well as small fundraisers of College merchandise and School Directory which all contributed to a grand total income gross of $78,541.

SSC Business Directory End of Term 1, 2016 will be the LAST call for registrations for our SSC Business Directory. It is a worthwhile opportunity to support and network with other members of our College community. We urge you to take advantage of this offer at the cost of only a $50 fee to have your business/service listed for two years. Completed registration forms can be dropped off at the front school office of both the Junior and Senior school campuses. Please refer to the end of the newsletter to print off a copy, or approach any P&F committee member for further assistance. Friends of the School are also most welcome to participate so please feel free to share!

From this amount, a cheque of $50,000 was presented to Mrs Stefanou for our College at the 2015 Leadership & Academic Assembly in December. We look forward to another eventful and successful year of fundraising! We welcome former and new members to the P&F team, their valued input at our meetings and for their efforts at our upcoming events for 2016.

On a final note, the P&F thank you, the parents, for your ongoing support! Without your assistance, our fundraising efforts would be impossible!

responsibilities. They were given information about the Board of Studies, Teaching and Education Standard NSW (BOSTES) and the Progression Policy. The Expression of Interest forms to progress to Years 11 and 12 at St Spyridon College are due to me at the end of Term 1.

YEAR 11 Year 11 Assessment Handbooks have been distributed to students. It is important that students familiarize themselves with their responsibilities. Year 11 students who are not involved in ISA may leave early (1.25pm) every Thursday with parent permission. Year 11 students who don’t study Economics may leave at 1.25pm every Friday Week A, with parent permission. In both cases students sign out at the office. THE ANNUAL PAN-ORTHODOX CHURCH SERVICE TO MARK THE OPENING OF THE LAW TERM 2016

i.

Students of the Year 12 Legal Studies class together with Mrs Pavlakis and Ms Livera, attended the 33rd Annual Pan-Orthodox Church Service to mark the opening of the Law Term for 2016. The service was held at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation on the 16th of February 2016. The procession to the Cathedral was led by the Chief Justice of the New South Wales Supreme Court, the Hon. Tom Bathurst AC, and commenced from the Rectory of the Archdiocese. The students noted that one of the highlights of the evening was when the legal personnel entered the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation dressed in their robes. The Year 12 Legal Studies students also had the opportunity to speak with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court who wished them well for their Higher School Certificate examinations.

Pride in personal appearance and regard for the good name of the College should lead to care by parents and students that the uniform is clean, pressed and tidy. The full and proper uniform is to be worn at all times, i.e.:  When students are travelling to and from College.  At College functions except when otherwise stated.  At ISA games and other Sports events. Lengths of Girls Uniform should be to the knee or below. Girls – socks must fully cover the ankle. Boys must be clean-shaven at all times. The only badges to worn are approved College badges. Hairstyles are to be kept neat and wellgroomed according to the College standards set down from time to time.

involve comparisons with peers or others. The first person to look at is YOURSELF and it is always important to set the bar above what you think you can do/be. This will help ensure you are performing at your best, not only in your studies but also as a responsible individual. Looking at what others do or don’t do is not helpful in developing independence and or the ability to step up.

Boys’ hair must be kept reasonably short. NO extreme styles are acceptable.  Girls’ hair, if long, must be tied back away from their faces with blue ribbon.  No coloured nails or extreme length.  Extreme hair coloration is not permitted. The only acceptable adornments for boys are a watch and cross which is worn inside the shirt. The only acceptable adornments for girls are a watch, a cross, which is worn inside the shirt or dress and stud or sleeper earrings, one in each earlobe.

YEAR 7 PLANNER CHECKING…Managing the Good and the Not So Good Parents who are new to the Senior School may not be fully aware of our expectations and the systems in place for ‘Maintaining a Positive Learning Environment’ (MAPLE). The Study Planner is used as a tool to keep track of student progress. Each Friday during the dedicated Pastoral Care lesson, the planner is collected and checked by the Home Room Teacher. If the page has been signed by a parent and is free of teacher comments (misdemeanours), the student is rewarded with 5 green stamps each week. These are totalled and added to the MAPLE stamp card at the end of the term. Maple stamps can also be given by individual class teachers to reward students for a variety of reasons during their lesson.

NO PARKING Please note: A "No Parking" sign means you can't park, but you can drop off or pick up passengers or goods without leaving your vehicle (i.e. you must be within three metres of your vehicle). You must attend to your business promptly (within two minutes of stopping your vehicle) Mrs A. Katsogiannis Principal Senior School

week, the student will be placed on an after school detention. The only exception to this is in the case of ‘No Planner’ and ‘No Parent Signature’. The latter becomes an issue if they occur THREE times or more in a term (irrespective of the week). Detention is held on Fridays and is supervised by the Year Adviser. The first detention is for 1 hour (3.05– 4.05pm), the second and third detention for 1.5hrs (3.05-4.35pm). Any further need for detention will result in an interview with parents and the student. Parents will need to make alternative arrangements to promptly pick up their child at the conclusion of detention from outside the front of the school.

SRC APPLE PICKING In 2015 our SRC adopted two Gala apple trees from the Bilpin Fruit Bowl, which is a fruit orchard at Bilpin near the Hawkesbury River. This initiative has two aims. The first is to support Australian farmers and produce and secondly to encourage healthy eating. The apples were picked from the trees by 14 past and present Year 8 and 9 SRC who travelled to Bilpin to collect them. The owner of the farm was very generous and allowed the students to not only collect apples from the two adopted trees, but also from the other trees nearby that made up any entire row. Altogether over 150 kilograms of apples were gathered up and placed in boxes ready to transport back to school. These apples were made available to all students at no charge from the canteen. Year 12 also received a box for their Common Room and two boxes also went to the Sports Department for use at weekend competitions.

PREFECT TALKS IN PASTORAL CARE On Friday last week Prefects were divided onto groups to speak to various year groups. Year 7 and 8 students learnt about the leadership opportunities at the Senior School and watched a power point presentation … “Our School, Our Heritage, Our Values”. Year 11’s listened to selected Year 12 Prefects reflect upon their experiences of the Preliminary Year. This included gaining some valuable tips that will hopefully help everyone navigate more easily through unfamiliar waters. Congratulations to all Prefects who took part in these activities during Pastoral Care.

Bianca Frazis

SCHOOL BAG MIX UPS

Elaine Andrew

A number of Year 7 students in particular are picking up the wrong bags and misplacing them. Part of the reason for this is the fact that all bags look the same. To reduce these incidents students have been asked to purchase a name tag that is clearly visible on their bags and also attach some kind of decorative item such as a ribbon or distinctive key chain to help identify their bag easily. This applies to sports bags as well as the normal school backpack. Parents please assist your child with organising this.

UPCOMING Leadership Activities

Dean Albanakis

Year 11 Young Women’s Leadership Seminar- NSW Parliament House (Tina Ventoura (SRC) and Keti Bull attending) Captains & Senior Prefect Leadership Day – SCEGGS Darlinghurst (College Captain: Chrystal Christie, Vice-Captain: Mariah Stavrou, Senior Prefect: Aaron-Paul Kostantakis attending). SRC – attending Doxology for His Holiness Patriarch Irinej’s visit. SRC’s and any other interested students interested in participating in Twilight Tours on Tuesday, 22nd March, please see Ms Kokinelis for an information letter.

Dean Albanakis

Eleni Mastroperos

Felicity Ginis

CAREERS

COLUMN

Once again, this column has a large amount of information about universities, other postschool options and upcoming events, which are relevant to students in Years 10, 11 and 12. It would be great if parents would encourage these students to read this newsletter (which is emailed to their school email address), so they don’t miss out on any opportunities or information. There is also information about some school holiday workshops which may be of interest to some slightly younger students and their parents.

ATO TAX FILE APPLICATIONS

NUMBER

A tax file number is a unique nine-digit number issued to individuals and organisations to help administer tax and other Australian Government systems. Students need a TFN before they can start any type of paid work or university studies.

Students need to apply for a TFN through the Australian Tax Office website, as this is no longer done through schools. For information on how to apply visit: https://www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Tax-filenumber/

‘The Joker’ – by 5A The Joker is an evil character from the comic book series ‘Batman’. Like every good adventure story, there is a hero and a villain. The Joker is the villain in this story. Together with his evil partner, Harley Quinn, they create mischief and chaos!

STUDENT EXCHANGE Student Exchange Australia New Zealand Ltd is incorporated in Australia as a not-for-profit company and is registered with the New Zealand Companies office. Our Mission is to offer the unique experience of living and studying in another culture and to enable young people to develop the skills and awareness that will enhance their future potential.

The Joker has a face only a mother could love. His skin is white and wrinkly. He wears black face paint under his deeply sunken-in and bloodshot eyes, and crimson lipstick on his lips. He has fluorescent yellow, mouldy teeth, which look like they stink! His evil grin spreads from one ear to the other flashing his rotten gums. His mouth is so big, he could probably fit a whole cooked chicken in it! His face is narrow and angular with a long pointy hook-nose like a witch. His chin is triangular like an arrow, and has a big ugly bump on it. His ears are sharp and elf-like and peep out of his wavy black and green streaked hair.

Students can choose between programs from 2 - 12 months duration to over 25 destinations. up to it. Whoever dares to enter Gotham City, risks the chance of never finding their way out. This dead and ghostly environment is definitely not suitable for any living thing to call home. Except for superheroes and villains of course!

The Joker is very tall and walks with a bad posture. He is so skinny; he looks like a walking skeleton. He wears a violet three piece suit with a lengthy tail on the jacket, and a mustardy-brown vest. In his pocket he has a tangerine flower which shoots out toxic acid. His shoes are black, shiny and old-fashioned. His socks are baby blue; matching his gloves and bow tie.

This evil city is the perfect hide-out for villains, where they create plans to take over the world. It lures all villains, and alerts all superheroes who are only a heartbeat away. This is the place where superheroes take action; beware all villains! Gotham City is an intense place where many unpredictable events occur and mysteries unfold.

Because his life is so action packed and chaotic, he has developed a brave and fierce personality. He always looks suspicious, sneaky and untrustworthy. He is definitely someone you don’t want to deal with.

CONGRATULATIONS John Trovas, Year 10, won a Gold medal at the Junior National Track Championships in Launceston. He won the medal in the Men’s under 17 Team Sprint event. This is John’s first year as an under 17 and he has continued to be competitive and was one of only three riders who were in their first year.

Gotham City is an unnatural environment, crowded with structures of many colours, shapes and sizes. Old gothic-style buildings give the city a gloomy and creepy atmosphere. On one side of the murky green harbour, there are towering, sharp buildings covered with a purple tinge. On the other side, high-rise apartments give a more sanitary and innocent vibe. Mouldy and rusted footpaths creep throughout the alleys. Parts of the city seem realistic and welcoming, while others appear like a haunted hallucination. A slate arched bridge links the two sides of the city. Most of the buildings appear to be lived-in. At night, the lights of the lofty apartments are on and the windows are illuminated. The evil-looking and frightening gargoyles guard the city like a mother eagle guards her newly hatched babies. Gotham City’s natural environment, gives a sense of misery, doom and gloom. The sky’s unusual colour and rough texture, gives you a chill up your spine. The clouds are rolling and rushing across its surface carrying with them loads of raindrops, which will be fired across the city. The sky, seeking revenge, is taking over the city and preparing for war. The sudden atmospheric changes make Gotham City look wicked and green with envy. The dirty, green, mouldy water in the harbour looks polluted and poisonous. It runs throughout the whole city, creating a barrier in the centre with many dead-end streets leading

Winning House: Nemeans All competing students deserve to be commended for not only a fantastic meet, but also for the house spirit. Once more the Nemeans were overall victors but the Olympians did secure this year’s Upper School Shield and are edging closer to winning the overall swimming House Trophy. The school swimming carnival allows the school to select the athletes/students who will represent the College at the ISA carnival which will be held at Sydney Olympic Park on Wednesday, 9th March. After the strong performances in the school, we are hopeful that the College will once again be very competitive at the representative level.

BOYS ISA FINALS

BASKETBALL

SEMI

In order to fully appreciate the success and achievements of the boys’ basketball season, you would need to acknowledge the depth of the sport within the ISA and where the boys are currently positioned. The ISA has 5 boys divisions and 1 development competition taking the total to 6 divisions. The boys through their hard work, persistence and effort throughout past seasons have managed to get to division 2.

16

Saturday, 27th February the U14A, U14B, U15 and Open Boys contested this year’s semifinals. With promotion and relegation a regular feature of boys sport in the ISA. The overall goal and measure of success for this season was to try and retain our position in one of the top tiers of boys Basketball in the ISA. With finals results playing an integral role in this process, the school will have a better idea of knowing if they have succeeded in their endeavour after the finals are played. That said, with so many of the boys teams featuring in the semi-finals it is unlikely that we will need to go back to the Division 3 competition.

many suggesting that they could have done even better, even when it was obvious that they did all they could. To say I am proud of this team would be an understatement they exceeded all expectations and must be commended for their approach to the season.

The U14A boys were first to play against a tough Redlands opponent. With a flood of possession the boys took an early lead capitalising on turnovers and excellent rebounding. By half time the flood waters had abided and the boy’s chances and scoring opportunities had drastically reduced. Redlands found a way to edge the gap, in the final 7 minutes of the game the boys capitalised on a great passing game between Spiros Zafiropoulos and Daniel Xeras helping the boys steer clear from Redlands and with only minutes remaining closed out the game with good ball possession. Congratulations to the boys.

In the Open Boys there was both excitement and anxiety prior to the game. For Christian Ishak (Year 12 and team Captain) the reality was that this could be his last game for the College. For the other boys a point to prove after being beaten twice in the regular season by Central Coast Grammar. Our boys had the best start to the game taking the lead and outplaying the Central Coast Grammar team for the entire first half. By 3rd Quarter the Central Coast team found their feet and together with that they also found their way to the basket, shooting and scoring from all areas of the court not to mention their flawless executing from the free throw line. By the close of three quarter time the game had slipped away. As difficult as it was trying to stay in the game in the first half, within 10 minutes the game had all but been lost. As with the 15’s the boys did not lose heart and despite being down they rallied in the last quarter to lose by 12 points. Our most senior team played their last game for the year, but they left a lasting impression on all our boys teams who watched them compete, they left a lasting legacy of the scale and pride our boys have for their school, they left a lasting impression on their opposing players and in their last game in the ISA they completed and achieved the goal of making the semi-finals in the Division 2 competition.

The U14B team were not so lucky; they were defeated by a very good St Pius X team. The boys were chasing the lead from the start to the finish and while it seemed that they could have the better of their opponents they could not capitalise on their scoring opportunities. Despite the loss the boys were buoyed by their efforts in making the semi-finals and now look forward to trying to go one better next year. One of the toughest overall opponents in the ISA division 2 competitions is the U15 boys’ team from St Gregory’s College. Our U15 boys team would need to play perfect Basketball and effectively execute every shot in order to win the game. Despite knowing that this would be a difficult game to win the boys applied themselves to the best of their ability throughout the game. The eventual score line did blow out, and the boys were beaten convincingly. What was most encouraging was seeing the real change in the culture of boys sport. There were no excuses offered, nor encouragement for making the semi-finals. The boys were critical of themselves with

I am very proud of the achievements of the boys’ basketball teams. Boys sporting culture at the College is as strong as ever before and the boys’ basketball teams of 2015- 2016 are testament to this.

for their service to basketball over the past five years.

Good luck to the U14A team and CONGRATULATIONS ON MAKING THIS YEARS ISA Division 2 Basketball Grand Final.

The Intermediate girls were heading into the semis undefeated and were looking to continue their run straight to the finals. The girls were aggressive and stayed strong during their game, led by their coach Mr Contominas and were successful in making it through to the finals next Saturday. Well done girls!

BOYS SOCCER TRIALS Boys football trials continue during ISA timetabled lessons. All boys requiring a new playing strip should have already placed an order with Mr Kaldis. Once uniforms are ready to be picked up students’ will be notified.

Again, we thank the coaches involved, Nansia Koukounaris, Mr Vergotis, Andriane Efstratiou, Cassandra Georgiou for all their efforts this season and we wish Mr Contominas and the Intermediates all the best for the finals this Saturday!

Successful students will be given a registration to sign off on and will be required to sign and complete the forms before forwarding to Mr Kaldis by Week 8 of Term 1 2016 Mr F. Kaldis Boys Sport

ISA SWIMMING CARNIVAL The ISA Swimming Carnival will be held on Wednesday the 9th of March at SOPAC, Homebush. The girls involved have been notified and many of them have been preparing at the squad training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at All Sorts Fitness Centre. We wish all swimmers participating the best of luck.

ISA GIRLS BASKETBALL Round 10 of ISA Basketball saw all the girls teams play at their best to try and secure a spot in the semi-finals which would take place the following week. Five out of the six girl’s teams made it into the semi-finals which displays the hard work and dedication from all involved.

CROSS COUNTRY TRAINING

The semi-finals were held on Saturday, 27th February at Penrith Sports Centre. Our Junior C’s and D’s did such a good job to qualify to the semi-finals but as they finished fourth they had to play first position, which was always going to be a difficult task. Both teams were unable to progress to the finals but the girls should be commended on their efforts in their first season of basketball!

Cross Country training will continue on Monday and Wednesday mornings at school for those who are competing at the ISA Cross Country meet on the 19th March. If you wish to participate please see Ms O’Shea.

NETBALL AND FOOTBALL TRIALS As the Basketball season draws to a close our focus turns to winter sport. Trials for netball and girls football teams will be held as of this week in ISA periods. If you wish to trial please see Ms O’Shea.

The Junior B’s also had a difficult task at hand and for parts of their semi-final clash they were ahead. All the girls showed great passion and in the end they were unlucky to come away with a 1 point defeat.

Miss A. Flokis Ms K. O’Shea Girls Sport

Our Opens played probably one of their best games of the season. Composure and great team work had the girls leading for parts of the game. However, strategy had a huge part in the final result as it came right down to the wire. The girls were defeated by 2 points but played an incredible semi-final. We thank our Year 12 girls Lia Albanakis, Georgia Koukounaris, Chrystal Christie and Tiana Milisavljevic

If not now, then when?’ – Emma Watson My proudest moment: Becoming Vice Captain of St Spyridon College One piece of advice I would give younger students: Put your hand up and volunteer to do everything you possibly can, even if you are nervous or scared of what might happen if you fail. You will regret the opportunities you don’t take.

PREFECT VOICE At Friday assemblies we have been reminding everyone of the Student Principles and at the moment we are up to number three: “We work together to achieve a school community whose distinguishing characteristics are those of friendship, compassion and decency.” As Mrs Katsogiannis always tells us to be good to one another, this principle reminds us of how important it is, especially in a school environment, for everyone to work together to get the best result possible from our education. This is particularly the case for Year 12 students as we need to collectively achieve to the best of our abilities in order to maximize our ATAR’s. Since last year’s HSC class excelled in their academic achievements, ranking the school in the top 10% of the State, we have quite a lot to live up to! The Prefects have also been on the look-out for our ‘Student of the Week’. This is a student who has stood out for following the principles we have mentioned and has gone out of his way to help in our local community. I am excited to announce our first ‘Student of the Week’ to be George Gemisis for the assistance he regularly gives to an elderly lady. Well done George! We hope everyone takes note and is able to follow your example. An inspiring fact for this week… The King of Rock and Roll (Elvis Presley) was told to stick to driving a truck because, he was told, “you’ll never make it as a singer.” This just goes to show that if you have set a goal or have a dream that you want to fulfill, you have every right to believe in yourself and pursue it!
