On Friday, 11th November, Dr Hickie led a special Remembrance Day Assembly; Year 9 students Tiffany Tsoukalas, Melanie Bounatsos and Connor Giavis, spoke about Australia’s part in non-European wars and the Battle of Long Tan. Stella Ktenas read “I Was Only 19”. Also on Friday, three representatives from Year 10, Joanna Skouteris, Dayna Kostantakis and Zac Prelec were once again honoured to be invited by Maroubra RSL (Sub Branch) to their annual Remembrance Day Commemoration, held at the Memorial on Anzac Parade. The Chairman and Secretary of the club, Mr Colin Flatters and Mr Jim Cody respectively, gave Joanna the responsibility of reading the Ode of Remembrance ‘In Flanders Fields’ to the assembled crowd. Joanna’s beautiful recitation of the Ode drew many positive comments, including those from members of the public and officials such as Randwick Counsellor Anthony Andrews and Matt Thistlethwaite, Member for Kingsford Smith. We thank Ms Kokinelis, Dean of Middle School, for organising this event.

YEAR 7 2017 PARENT FORUM Last Tuesday evening the first official gathering our new Year 7 cohort, accompanied by their parents, was held in the SPACe. While this is always an exciting event for all, it was especially thrilling to see the SPACe filled with the largest gathering of new students in the history of our College. Everyone’s smiling faces and bubbling spirits were testament to the positive atmosphere that was set, especially by the Peer Support Leaders who had the task of welcoming and assisting at this important event. Year 7 and parents attentively listened to the various presentations given by our Head of College Mrs Stefanou, Principal Mrs Katsogiannis and select student leaders Stella Ktenas, Christopher Vlachos and Anthea Condous who provided insights into the journey of becoming a Senior School student.

Topic: You have recently had an argument with one of your friends. Write a letter to him/her in which you try to explain your point of view.

Μην ξεχνάς ότι αν χρειάζεσαι βοήθεια ή έστω κάποιον για να μιλήσεις θα είμαι πάντα κοντά σου. Όμως, αυτό δεν σημαίνει ότι δεν μου αρέσει να κάνω παρέα και με άλλα παιδιά. Σε αγαπώ και θέλω να το ξέρεις, αλλά μου αρέσει να έχω σχέσεις και με άλλα παιδιά κι άλλες φιλίες. Αν κάτι σε πειράζει στη συμπεριφορά μου, θέλω να μου το λες, να το συζητάμε ήσυχα και ειρηνικά και όχι να μου βάζεις τις φωνές όπως προχτές και μετά να μου κρατάς μούτρα. Εξάλλου με σένα δεν μιλάω καθημερινά στο τηλέφωνο;

…Leadership is about taking responsibility; not making excuses, and that’s a great asset to have. Taking action is also a big part of being a leader, because when you’re the leader, it is you who has to stop and take the action in a situation, and make the best decision for the team… Dyllon Polyzos 6P

‘…You don’t have to hold a position in order to be a leader.’ This quote is important to me because it is telling me that you don’t have to be the smartest in the class to be a leader. Or similarly, you don’t have to be the best soccer player in the team to be a Captain.
LEADERSHIP TOOLS FOR SUCCESS IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL During Semester 2, Year 6 learnt about Leadership, and have been challenged to use their ‘Toolbelt’ of Skills, Knowledge and Values to be leaders in the classroom, school and wider community. This is known as the Leadership Toolbelt; designed for leadership success. The grade’s classroom learning culminated in the planning and hosting of the Olympics Celebration Day, held recently at Rowland Park. In addition, their final writings about Leadership reveal deep learning about the concept and actions of leadership, but also their personal position on Leadership displays the value held; for the newly-acquired tools for Leadership Success!
‘A leader is someone who demonstrates what is possible.’ This quote is important to me because as a leader you are not scared to take a risk and show all people that anything is possible… Nicholas Michos 6P …‘Before you become a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.’ On the other hand, you must have faith and be positive. Leaders always start young, by growing themselves and setting long term goals, but once you become a leader you assist and grow others. Have faith in that, if something doesn’t work out the first time, trying again and again until you get it correct; shows leadership. Leaders must be comfortable with being uncomfortable. After all, ‘A leader is someone who demonstrates what’s possible.’ Try not to make excuses: always be positive! Adriana Drakoulis 6P
Following on, here is just a small sample of summative learnings; direct from student essay writings. Ms D McCarthy Primary Coordinator ‘A true leader is someone who leads with heart, someone who does not want to overrule.’ This is my favourite motto, as I think that it completely defines a leader, in an abbreviated form. A leader keeps our country and world in order. Another view of mine is that, without leadership, many would be suffering, or without jobs. Consider the following views to become a good leader. Anika Vlahakis 6P
Leadership takes time and effort, lots of it, and it’s not as easy as it sounds. Leaders; successful ones, need to learn to be thoughtful; but not lazy, humble; but not timid, and so on and so on. Leadership comes in many forms; it is a set of values and behaviours that are used to ensure justice and equality in any situation…
To me a leader needs to have these three assets: to make plans and take action, to be
9
Leaders never exclude people which means, if you’re playing handball, they will never say you can’t play. Leaders have empathy, so they know how people are feeling. They lead by example, they have faith in themselves, they always try their best, and they always try; which means they never give up. They encourage others. George Mitropoulos 6M
… What’s something else a successful leader needs? Perhaps they need to be imaginative and creative. Why, you ask? Well, a good and successful leader needs to imagine all things possible about being successful. I see leadership as a very, very detailed painting, not only because it takes time and effort, but because you need to be creative. You see, imagination makes things better. How do you expect to paint something so magnificent… with no imagination? Tiana Natsikas 6M
‘A leader is someone who demonstrates what’s possible.’ This summarises the qualities of a leader. These qualities are: Whether big or small, strong or weak, a leader should always be able to cope with things; good or bad, make plans and put them into action, and must always lead with heart. They are just some of the tools a good leader needs…
Great leaders don’t set out to be a leader… They set out the make a difference. It’s never about the ride- only the goal. In our world, thrilling events occur every day that we might not be sure of. Poverty and war do occur. People die of hunger and thirst every minute we speak. If we take a minute to realise it, we can change the world, before it deteriorates...
…In conclusion, I strongly believe that being a leader is the best quality anyone in the world could have, because it means that you are kind-hearted and very, very much well-taught and well-brought-up in this world. An example of a great leader is Nelson Mandela. But the best leader who ever lived is Jesus. ‘Great leaders do not set out to be a leader, they set out to make a difference. It’s never about the role- always about the goal.’ So Go Make A Difference! Damascus Ecomonou 6M
… People have to bring to the forefront an awareness of how leaders must also think creatively. Not wearing a badge or being the leader of the country doesn’t mean you still can’t do the best for this community. For example: I don’t assume any of our teachers wore badges or became leaders of the country before they came to our school. Yet they are now excelling leaders to us, they have become inspiring people that give us an education, and evolve us into generous humans. They still show us how to take extra care of ourselves and community. IF your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then YOU ARE A LEADER… Eleni Nicholas 6M
Disco Time! Do you like loud music, pizza, and limbo? The St Spyridon College disco was the right place for you! I know you wish you were there, but there were no parents allowed! So let us tell you what happened beyond the doors.
I strongly believe that Leadership is really important. Leadership contains: manners, respect, being polite, sharing and caring. Leaders are brave; they aren’t shy. (They give it a go which means they aren’t nervous.) Leaders are really important people because they have a good attitude and they don’t swear.
At 6pm, two hours of fun had just begun. It is a very well-known phenomenon that Greeks love their food, so the yummy, cheesy pizza, (which had only arrived at six thirty) was gone in no time! As we danced the night away, the teachers called for a… DANCE OFF! The grand prize was a $50 ‘Athlete’s Foot’ voucher, which was won by four finalists. To conclude the night, we tested how low we could go under the inflatable limbo stand! It was difficult, but we got under in the end.
10
The lollipops which were handed out worked their magic by keeping the smiles on all of the children’s faces. As you know, all good things must come to an end, and at 8pm that’s exactly what happened to the disco. As our parents collected us, we left the disco with a frown. In our opinion the disco was a hit, and we hope that our school holds one again next year! Mia Paras and Sophia Karatasos 5A

The boys teams headed into this round with great anticipation and for many of the teams it represented a real opportunity to consolidate their position on the table. Many of the boys teams were successful and performed exceptionally well. Our U14 boys won their first game of the season and our Opens managed to back up winning their second game in a row. Firsts won 46-37 v St Pius X College 17s lost 27-26 v St Pius X College 15s won 32-25 v St Pius X College 14s won 18-17 v St Pius X College 13Blue won 17 -14 v Oakhill College 13 White lost 26-18 v Chevalier College
Good luck to all teams for the remanding two matches this year.
Round 5 Saturday 12th November 2016 Round 5 proved to be a more difficult task with our opponents Chevalier dominating most games. The Chevalier College basketball teams were in last years Division 1 competition and the difference in the standard was evident from the outset of the day with the U13 Boys being outmuscled and beaten easily because of a height disadvantage. Unfortunately our boys were not able to withstand the strong organised structure of their opponents. That said, the boys will be looking to try and improve on their weaknesses. The boys teams are being challenged every week and the competitive competition is invariably going to help improve their overall game.

Although our Opens were beaten convincingly their fight and relentless drive to do their best was admirable. I look forward to watching the boys play in next weeks game against Redlands to see how they respond to this challenge. Firsts lost 81 -51 v Chevalier College 17s won 33-20 v Chevalier College 15s lost 16 -46 v Chevalier College 14s lost 10-40 v Chevalier College 13Blue won 22 -17 v St Patrick College 13 White lost 25-38 v Chevalier College Despite the difficult day, the U17 boys and U13 Blue team played exceptional. Both teams produced a wonderful effort in their transition and strong rebounding all of which helped to secure much needed wins.
Athletics 2017 – Promotion to Division 1 At the conclusion of every school year schools are made aware of promotion and relegation in various sports and carnivals. After this year’s resounding success on the track the boys will be competing in next year’s Division 1 Athletics Carnival. This is the first time the school is in Division 1 and places the school in the top 9 performing schools out of 18 in Athletics.
Congratulations to all involved and best of luck to all the students in next year’s carnival. Mr F. Kaldis Boys Sport
