Parents will be able to place and pay for lunch orders from a home computer or mobile device. It only takes a few minutes to set up an on‐line account, and the system guides you through the process. The canteen is always seeking volunteers to assist in the operation of our school canteen. If you would like to assist our team your assistance would be required between 8.30 ‐ 1.30pm or for a recess or lunch time slot.

OPTIONS You can place a whole weeks order all at once if you wish, do it on Sunday night or at work but make sure its placed before 9am or it will not reach the canteen in time for that day.
Remember the food is prepared and made at St Spyridon college in our canteen and is not outsourced to a catering company so you can be assured of quality and freshness. Parents are fully supported by the flexischools customer service team, who monitor orders every day. Every parent has piece of mind in knowing they have assistance with every aspect of the online ordering system.

Flexischools tracks all orders by ensuring they are downloaded and labels are printed by the canteen. If there are changes to an order, or school computer problems, flexischools will send through all orders to the canteen via fax or email. Parents will need to take Primary students home with them at the conclusion (approximately 11:45am).

PREPARING PRELIMINARIES

Over the last 10 days Year 10 have been participating in activities to prepare for their Preliminary and HSC Courses.
On Thursday, 8th December, 2016 we will be rewarding students for their academic achievements as well as announcing the Student Leaders for 2017.
These included a visit to Holy Cross Monastery, Central Mangrove, guest speakers, introduction to Courses and a First Aid Course.
This special assembly will take place in the Sports and Performing Arts Centre and will start promptly at 9.30 a.m. and end at approx. 11.30 a.m.
Next week they will go Paddle Boarding and visit St Basil’s Nursing Home.
Senior School students will be awarded 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place Years 7-10 and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place Years 11 and 12. Students are to arrive at School and assemble in the courtyard no later than 8.45 a.m. Students are to wear summer uniform and blazer. The reports for Years 7-10 will be distributed at the end of the program. All parents and family are encouraged to attend. Please be seated by 9.15a.m. Students will be dismissed at the end of Assembly for the year.

YEAR 9 FOOD TECHNOLOGY SYDNEY TOWER EXCURSION
YEAR 10 FOOD TECHNOLOGY CAKE DECORATING
This term, Year 9 Food Technology students visited Sydney Tower Restaurant to further enhance their learning of food safety, hygiene and business practices in a contemporary field. We began with an educational tour of the premises to observe production areas, followed by a full Buffet lunch. The food provided reflected the study area ‘Food in Australia’, as students feasted on a variety of dishes reflecting past and present Australia. Students particularly enjoyed the kangaroo, emu and crocodile dishes!
In continuing with our focus topic area “Food Trends”, Year 10 Food Technology created the ever popular “Naked Cake” this term. Within 2 hours, the students successfully achieved their design brief to create a celebratory cake incorporating up to date food items and production techniques. Students were able to evaluate the concept of trends as a reflection of changes within our society and the impact of technological development.

THE AUSTRALIAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION 2016 Hundreds of thousands of students from all over the world enter this prestigious mathematics competition also known as the AMC. The AMC has three aims: To highlight the importance of mathematics as a curriculum subject. To give students an opportunity to discover talent in mathematics. To provide resources for the classroom and general discussion. The AMC continues to be a major school mathematics event and is one part of our further enrichment and problem-solving program.

YEAR 9 DRAMA - Aladdin This term, the Year 9 Drama students were given the task of preparing and presenting a children’s theatre production to a junior school audience. In keeping with what is showing in Sydney, we decided on the musical Aladdin. Each student was allocated a role and we rehearsed diligently in Drama lessons and outside of school. In addition to learning all lines and direction, the students were given the responsibility of being in charge of an element of production; lighting, costume, props and sound. We were fortunate enough to have Sally Carter, a student teacher helping throughout Term 4. Her expertise and

experience as a NIDA stage manager graduate was invaluable. The students worked hard to produce an outstanding performance showed to our wonderful Year 4 students on Tuesday 29th November. Watching how Jade, Dimitrios, Christine, Manny, Sophie, Caitlin, Chrissy, Spiros, Georgia and Chris developed as performers was an incredibly rewarding experience. Their enthusiasm and support over the years has been both enjoyable and greatly appreciated. MEETING USAIN ST LEO BOLT There was history to be made in the Rio Olympics and I for one was not going to miss watching it unfold. A simple man from Jamaica had run three events and won gold medals in all three events. These events were the 100m, 200m and 4x100m sprints, over three consecutive Olympic Games.

This amazing man is none other than Usain Bolt. He is regarded as the fasted human ever created and I admire and idolize him for his sporting achievements. Last Friday, I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity by my parents to meet him in person in Melbourne. Firstly, I had to wake up very early to catch our 7am morning flight. My Mum and I arrived in Melbourne at around 8:30am. My uncle had arranged to have a special car waiting for us at the airport upon our arrival. Our driver George picked us up and drove us into the city where we went looking for some Puma clothing to purchase in case Usain Bolt was going to sign them. After shopping, I really wanted to go on a tram, so we walked to the tram station and we took the tram around Melbourne City. We were waiting on a phone call from Usain Bolts manager as to what time we would meet him. They finally messaged my mum and said we could meet him at 2pm. As my mum knew I loved sushi, she took me for lunch to Nobu. At Nobu we could actually see Usain Bolt holding a press conference for Nitro Athletics outside the Crown Casino. Once his press conference was finished and we had finished our lunch, his personal bodyguard came to the restaurant and got us. They took us up to his private room and we were told to wait there. At this point I was starting to get very excited but also very nervous about meeting Bolt. Within five minutes he came over to where we were siting and high-fived me. We sat down together on the lounge and he asked a lot of different questions. Some of these questions were; what is my favourite

sport? Do I know any fun facts about him? What do I want to be when I grow up? We spoke for a long time and then I got to take some photos with him and his best friend, John Steffenson (who is an Australian Silver Medal winner in the 200m sprint). He also signed a lot of merchandise for me and my family.

Before he left to go to his radio commitments, he wished me the best of luck and said he hoped I broke his 100m running record one day. I am still in shock I got to meet him and have personal time with him.

As part of the ‘Preparing for the Preliminaries’ program, Year 10 students participated in a career-readiness workshop on ‘Presentation and Appearance’, provided by Kathryn Taylor from Turning Point Consulting. The students found this to be a very informative and useful session, where they were provided with many tips which should prove beneficial not only for interviews and meetings for employment, but for applications for scholarships, cadetships and early offers to university as well. The students enjoyed hearing Kathryn’s insights into the corporate world and what recruiters look for in candidates.

For students wanting to become an early childhood and primary teacher, who don’t meet the requirements of three Band 5s, Macquarie University recommend: • Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education). Intermediate B The Year 9 girls have had a successful start to the season. Round 5 they played a double header against Redlands where they narrowly lost against the top placed undefeated team and won convincingly in the second game that day. In Round 6 the girls unfortunately lost 2015 against Oxley. The girls need to secure a couple more wins in order to qualify for the Semi Finals.

Junior Girls It has been most pleasing watching the development of all the Junior girls. The Junior A team has been extremely competitive in Division 1 where their strong defence has earned them success. Their Round 6 match was very exciting where they scored a basket in the last 30 seconds to win the match. The Junior B team and both Junior C teams continue to develop their skills each week both at training and in their matches. I look forward to watching their growth continue in 2017.
COLUMN
ISA GIRLS BASKETBALL The girls have had a fantastic start to the Basketball season. Results have been favourable for some teams however the girls have developed their Basketball skills each week and thoroughly enjoyed the competition. Opens This year’s competition has been incredibly close with the top 4 teams within 2 points of each other each time they have played. During Round 5 the girls versed Oakhill 2 and they were able to achieve a convincing win. Perhaps the most exciting match was Round 6 against Oxley first where the girls were able to defeat the undefeated first placed team. This win was extremely important for the girl’s confidence as they now have belief in themselves and will enter the back end of the season with a positive approach. At one point the team had a 10 point lead, however, the final score was 26-20. The team still have a hard road ahead next year as they need to play St Andrews and St Pauls Grammar who are above them on the ladder. However, with their continued dedication to improve and develop their team, cohesion they will no doubt see favourable results and secure themselves a semi-final position.
I would like to commend the girls for their efforts and dedication to training and their ISA matches each week. Their skill development and understanding of the game continues to improve and it has been pleasure to watch their growth. Their participation in the ISA program has enabled them to strengthen their friendships, develop team cohesion and value the importance of healthy competition in sport. I would like to wish all students, parents and coaches a Merry Christmas and safe holidays and thankyou for your support of the ISA sport program.
BOYS ISA BASKETBALL The boys’ teams have been training hard knowing that for our junior teams success on the weekend was paramount in giving the teams an opportunity to feature in the finals in 2017. It has been a challenging year with some

near losses and disappointing team performances and despite the interrupted training with academic examinations, the boys managed to do well on a difficult away trip. The U13 Blue team defeated St Pius X College comfortably and are currently sitting in 2nd place with 5 wins and 1 loss. The boys must be commended for their effort and willingness to improve on their performances every week.

As for the U13 White team they too were in better form this week. Needing to win to stay in contention the boys were comfortable winners defeating Redfield College after a shaky start. Franklin Pyliotis together with Marcus James were very strong off the board as was Billy Bounos with his excellent leadership from the point guard position. Given that this is now their second win of the season, the boys need to put together a strong start to the 2017 season in order to reach the semi-finals.
In the U17 and Opens games, both teams struggled under the relentless and determined Redfield attack. Both teams did not show up, and they were dealt a brutal blow in the last game of the season. That said the interrupted preparation and the looming holidays are unwelcomed distractions that did have an unwanted impact on team performance. It has been a tough year in Basketball with many teams being pushed by their opponents. The realisation that being challenged and not always winning is a learning curve that strengthens your resolve and athletic ability. Wishing all families a blessed Christmas and a Happy New year. Our U14 boys did not have the same fortunes going down to Redfield in a very close game. The boys were very good on the back of their structured attack and while the signs were promising, the team could not capitalise on some easy scoring opportunities, while Redfield took their chances. Despite this the boys played well and still have the opportunity to feature in a semi-final should they win their opening 2 games of the season.
