NEWS

Well done Sarah! We look forward to having Sarah represent our College at future Independent Schools Equestrian events.

UNIFORM SHOP TIMES 8.30 am to 10.00 am and 2.30 pm to 4.00 pm – Wednesday only school term.

JUNIOR SCHOOL REPORT It would be of immense assistance if all parents could observe school protocol and leave the designated car parking for teachers on Mary Hamer Lane vacant in the morning. Please note that parking across the Infant’s gates and specifically in No Parking zones, makes navigating the pedestrian crossing, and reversing from car spaces challenging. Also noteworthy is the hazardous practice of driving down Mary Hamer Lane the wrong way for a quick get-away. Your understanding and cooperation is appreciated as safety is paramount and caution must be exercised at all times.

MIDDLE REPORT

STAFF NEWS – HIGHER DEGREE Our Science Teacher, Mr J. McPhee, was admitted to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Environmental and Life Science, Faculty of Science, from the University of Newcastle.

SCHOOL

“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you”. 5:18 Thessalonians

The dedication and commitment required to complete a research higher degree is highly significant. Life can be hard sometimes. Situations don’t always work out the way we want. Challenges seem to pop up when we least expect them.

Dr McPhee has been recognized as a highly experienced and qualified research academic and author by the broader global scientific community. The title of his thesis is “Life History Characteristics of Glassfish, Ambassis jacksonienis, Adjacent to Saltmarsh within a large and permanently-open Estuary”.

Nevertheless, there is always something to be thankful for. There is always something to smile at. There is always something to appreciate. There is always something beautiful that’s happening around us.

Congratulations.

SPECIALITY PHOTOS

In spite of all the “bad” things that may be happening in our lives, Paul tells us in Thessalonians to be “full of thanksgiving for everything that is taking place” because God is using our circumstances to help develop our character and prepare us for whatever is coming our way - be it good or not so good. It is for this reason that we need to be especially thankful. Furthermore, it is especially important to note that when we’re able to give thanks in the bad times, we will recognize that it’s all good!

Prefects, Peer Support Leaders, Senior Leaders, and SRC photographs taken on the 16th May, 2017 are now on line for parents to view and order if they wish to do so. To access photos, please visit: www.academyphoto.com.au and go to "Products for Parents" "Order Online". Please enter the following 8 digit shoot key: DW6H9HTB Photographs are $20 each and will be available online for six months, alternatively you may call Academy School Photography on 1300 766 472 to place your order by phone.

Last week at the Friday assembly our Prefects highlighted all the above in their address to students and our College Captain, Constantinos Kollias suggested to the Prefect Body that the quote from Thessalonians not only be our “Quote of the week” but should also be adopted as the school Catch Cry for Term 3. Needless to say this is what has happened. All students are encouraged to keep “In everything give thanks” in mind at all times and even perhaps say it before prayer each day to remind themselves.

when no homework is given or is an addition to homework if there isn’t much of it (and involves all the areas mentioned above).

JEANS 4 GENES DAY 2017

Furthermore, parents also need to be aware when assessments are due. For those who may not be familiar with processes, an assessment calendar showing an overview of due dates is given to students at the start of each Term. Parents can assist their child by placing a copy in a prominent position like on the fridge door where in can be monitored AND in the students’ room, perhaps on a notice board (if they have one). Working smarter is the key to success and this involves organisation, discipline, and responsibility!

Each year our school participates in this National event aimed at supporting the work of Children's Medical Research Institute who tirelessly research into genetic defects & childhood diseases in order to give kids around the world a better chance of a healthy, happy future! Tomorrow our students, led by SRC’s from across all the year groups will give a donation, to purchase Jeans for Genes Day items, and wear mufti that incorporated DENIM to DENIMISTRATE their support of this cause. In addition to this SRC from Year 9 and Year 11 volunteered to sell Jeans for Genes merchandise at Eastgardens shopping centre with Miss Flokis (acting Year 9 Adviser). Thank you to everyone for a job well done and for supporting this fundraising initiative.

BUY AND WEAR BEANIES FOR BRAIN CANCER Last year the SRC ran a successful fundraising campaign on behalf of the Sydney NeuroOncology Group (Brain Cancer Research and Support). Numerous activities were held to both raise awareness and money for SNOGS important work. A number of students also purchased beanies to wear with their winter uniform. This year SNOG has commissioned dark blue beanies that fit more easily in with our uniform, as part of their campaign and we have made these available for students to purchase for $15 from the office. If any student is yet to purchase a beanie there are plenty still available. For those that may not like to disturb their hair styles at school please note that beanies can keep heads warm outside of school, perhaps at home, while watching TV, using the computer, or even to bed on super cold nights!

PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS and Planning Ahead Over the past two weeks interviews between teachers and parents have occurred to discuss student progress following the issuing of Half Yearly Report at the end of last Term. The start of Semester 2 is always a great time for reflection and planning for a strong finish, remembering that many more assessment tasks will be coming as well as Yearly Examinations in Term 4. All students should have regular routines that are followed. This includes: having a study timetable, completing homework on the day it is given irrespective of when it is due, beginning work on assessments as soon as notifications are received, using time when no homework has been given effectively by reviewing work done and developing summaries & mind maps/charts/diagram of work done. Reading ahead in current topics being studied is also a good way of stimulating thought and building knowledge. Students sometimes may say they have “no homework”. However, they are forgetting that home study is something everyone is to do

8

At the start of this Term colourful sticky notes began to appear each day on the mirrors of the girls bathroom. Each note containing an uplifting or inspirational message. These notes would be on the mirrors early in the morning before students arrived. The girls have asked me if I was the one placing them. Even though I would have loved to take the credit, as it’s a fabulous idea that has been very well received, the instigator of this wonderful act is a MYSTERY. We thank the mystery girl, teacher, OR staff member who has taken upon themselves to provide these lovely messages to us. It has had an impact! Well done!

TECH TALK FRIDAY Mass media often sends us mixed up messages that are often tainted with inappropriate content and or biased views. However, documentaries can make for great media that can become a focal point for learning and discussion between parents and children. They can provide children with positive messages and bring awareness of a great variety of topics. Below is a list of some documentaries worth looking at. BEST FOR ANY AGE: Spellbound chronicles the experiences of eight kids as they progress through the 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee. First Position looks inside the determined and focused world of youth ballet. This documentary follows six dancers as they compete in the 2011 American Grand Prix, an annual competition for dancers aged 9 to 19. That Sugar Film is a documentary in which Filmmaker Damon Gameau takes us along for the ride as he goes from a diet of no sugar to one with sugar. My Kid Could Paint That introduces us to Marla Olmstead, a four-year-old who paints incredible paintings—but is she truly doing it alone?

The MYSTERY STICKY NOTE Good Samaritan 

WORK EXPERIENCE REPORT

BOYS FOOTBALL

“During the Winter school holidays, I was fortunate enough to gain work experience in contractual, property and business law at one of the CBD's many leading Law firms. During my week there I was able to engage in a variety of tasks such as coordination of office records, performing base legal work in conveyancing, such as research into legislation, drafting legal documents, as well as corresponding with clients. I was also able to engage in legal conversations around the office and understand exactly what it means to 'think' and 'behave' like a lawyer, as well as the fundamentals of the legal practice. Overall I would highly encourage everyone to gain as much work experience as possible, as this experience truly helped me realise my love for this profession and has given me the enthusiasm to strive as hard as possible to attain my goals.”

The boys football teams representing the school in the ISA have been trying very hard over the course of the last few weeks to try and string together strong performances in order to feature in the semi-finals in the Division 1 competition. While the competition and standard of Football is high, our boy’s teams have been competitive and driven to succeed. This past Saturday the boys were excellent against Chevalier College. With many of the teams winning while at the same time playing attacking football and always looking to work on our training goal of the week which was our transition. Our Open boys have been outstanding this season and much of this success has been driven by the Year 12 students who despite having trials attended the game on the weekend. While not playing the best football of the season, to get the result they wanted was credit to the boys and their coach. To date this has been a very memorable season for the boys who set their season goal to make semi- finals. This goal has been achieved and now the boys must look to consolidate their strong performances and finish with a win against St Andrews Cathedral school before backing up to play in semi-final week. Congratulations to our most senior team defeating Chevalier College 1-0.

platform for the team going forward. Our midfield has been strong across all matches, with special mention to Benjamin Hickman and Leo Parsci, who have been main stays in the middle of the park and have been the real force behind our success in creating and scoring goals. A player who has shown great composure and poise in front of goal has been Christian James, who is our leading goal scorer in the team. All players have developed greatly and need to be commended for their efforts. Finally, I’d like to thank all the parents for their continued support throughout the season. It has been an absolute pleasure to coach these boys this season and help them with their development. I wish them all the best for the rest of the season!

Results from Round 9 U13 white 7-0 winners v Chevalier College U13 Blue 3-0 winners v Chevalier College U13 Green loss to St Patricks College U14 White 6-1 winners to Chevalier College U14 Blue loss to Chevalier College U15 White had a 1-1 draw with Chevalier College U15 Blue Bye round U16 boys lost 3-1 to Chevalier College 2nd XI celebrated a 1-0 win to Chevalier College First XI defeated Chevalier College 1-0 U15 White Match Report Last Saturday our team, the under 15A’s, played Chevalier College away at Bowral. Though unlucky, our team was missing two great players, Luka Stosic, who had to play for the Opens and Emmanuel Constantopedos. But we were still strong and we walked in the game confident and focussed. During the first half, we created many chances but we couldn’t seem to put them away. Unfortunately the opposing team managed to score a long shot towards the end of the first half, but we kept our heads up and shook it off. Yet again we created many chances in the second half and we managed to score as Maksim Kasalovic cut outside the box and beautifully placed the goal in the bottom corner, ending the game in a one all draw. Overall we did well and we did what was required to qualify for the semi-finals. Michael Dimitrakopoulos Year 9

Coach: Christos Raptis U14 Blue Football This year the under 14B's were confronted with a challenging and exciting competition playing in the Division 1 Football ISA tournament. Throughout the competition we saw the passion and pride that was displayed when wearing the St Spyridon jersey. With every game the students ran onto the field happily, with pride honour and dignity for their school which was encapsulated by their strong efforts on the field throughout the year.

U13 Blue Football What a season it has been thus far for St Spyridon’s Under 13 Blues. With the team getting its first taste of ISA football this year, the boys have marvelled at the prospect of reaching the semi-finals and have done so in inspiring fashion. Upon taking over the team during their third match in the competition, the boys have gone on to win 4 of their last 6 and look well placed to make a commanding statement in the final series. Each week, the boys have shown great character and commitment for one another and our results reflect their great attitude towards their team mates and their school. Across the park there have been many stand out performers. James Cardamis’ presence in goals has kept us in many matches. Our defence have developed a formidable partnership and have laid a strong

Many of the schools in the competition have over 100 students in each grade and are able to make numerous teams. In comparison to our 40 boys, considering this ratio we are able to compete against some of the more larger and successful schools like Oakhill, Saint Patricks, Chevalier College. This is an outstanding achievement within itself. The competitive

football played throughout the year and the boys’ willingness to learn and apply themselves to training every week speaks volumes for their commitment to school sport.

which resulted in them receiving Age Champions. These students will be acknowledged at the sports presentation on the condition they compete at the ISA carnival.

Despite the difficult competition each week the boys constantly turned up for each other improving on their communication skills and football skills. Although we will not make the semi-finals this season there have been many rewarding moments throughout the year. The students have built great comradery and shared countless memories and laughs together. Saturday sport enables students to build great friendship and compete together, which brings the students closer together.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL SENIOR SCHOOL On Friday 21st July the Senior School had their Annual Athletics Carnival at Hensley Athletics Field. The students participated with enthusiasm and determination in an effort to do their very best to contribute to their house colour. With strong participation from all students we had a record number of entries with 1500 entries across both track and field events. All students participated in good spirit and showed great sportsmanship throughout the day.

Finally, thank you to the Year 12 students who participated on the day and continue to support the school sporting activities.

At this stage we have the following teams who are certain for a Semi Final Position: Open A’s, Open B’s, Intermediate C’s and Junior B’s. Junior C’s must win this week to qualify in 4th place. Good luck all teams. Unfortunately the Junior D’s will miss out on Semi Finals and also have a bye this week, however, they have had a great season and shown a marked improvement throughout the season. Congratulations to all the Junior D players and to their coaches Lia Albanakis and Georgia Koukounaris. Each week their fundamental skills and their knowledge of the game have improved and they no doubt will continue to improve as they continue to play netball throughout their time at the school.

ISA FOOTBALL Round 8 was perhaps the most exciting round for our Open girl footballers as they not only scored our first goal of the season but they won their first game of the season 5-1. Each week these girls have persevered and shown complete dedication and commitment to try their best each week. Whilst losing each week can be disheartening these girls continue to have faith in their ability and aspire to achieve minor goals each game. The girls in this team

have great spirit and passion and most importantly enjoy playing a sport they love despite the score. In Round 10 the girls will travel to play against St Andrews Cathedral School to play their last game.

Unfortunately, Round 8 and 9 resulted in losses but never the less the girls continue to show great individual skill and potential. Round 10 the girls will travel to Oxley to play their last game of the season.

Junior girls have been competitive each week against very strong competition in Division 1.

PREFECT PAGE Name:

Harry Gavalas

I joined St Spyridon College in: Year 7 Previous Leadership Roles: leader

SRC, House Vice-Captain, Peer Support

Subjects I am currently studying: Chemistry, Standard English, Mathematics Ext 1, Business Studies, Modern Greek Continuers (completed), Modern Greek Ext 1 (completed) Hobbies: I love to play chess, reading a great book, sport of any kind especially soccer, basketball and golf. My future aspirations: I hope to study in the area of Medicine and to help those people in need. I also hope to travel around the world in search for new cultures and lifestyles. My role models: Ronaldo, Einstein, Hypocrates, and most scientists in history. Favourite quote: “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.” Albert Einstein My proudest moment: The time that I have been proud of the most is when I received a distinguished achiever award for getting in the highest band for Modern Greek Ext1 Accelerated. One piece of advice I would give to younger students: You must set a target in your life so that you can believe in it and then chase it by doing your best at school which will eventually result in achieving that certain goal and dream. Student Principle: My chosen student principle is: “We work together to achieve a school community whose distinguishing characteristics are those of friendship, compassion and decency.” I have carefully selected this particular principle as it applies in our daily life in this school with friends and teachers to try and achieve the best and friendliest environment for our students. By applying compassion you tend to think of each other and be supportive of one another. And by applying decency we accept each other’s standards of morality and respectability. I believe that this principle keeps all of us in a strong relationship which will get us to do great things in the near future and forever in this case. I use this specific principle in my school life so I can get a positive view on both the students and the teachers and to feel as if I have a second place to call home. I consistently apply this principle to my own work with having a group of friends helping each other out for a great outcome in our studies, which also creates experience for working in a group in the near future e.g. university.
