The Dormition of the Theotokos Every year on the 15th of August our Holy Church celebrates the feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos known in Greek as Κοίµησις της Θεοτόκου. The Feast commemorates the falling asleep or repose of the All-Holy, Pure and Glorious Mother of God, the Ever-virgin Mary. It also commemorates the Assumption of her All-Holy and Pure Body into Heaven. The circumstances of the Dormition of the Mother of God were known in the Orthodox Church from apostolic times. At the time of her blessed Falling Asleep, the Most Holy Virgin Mary was again at Jerusalem. Her fame as the Mother of God had already spread throughout the land and had aroused many of the envious and the spiteful against her. They wanted to make attempts on her life; but God preserved her from enemies. As she had prior to the Annunciation and her conceiving of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and during His lifetime, she spent the years after His crucifixion and glorious resurrection in prayer, praying for the safety and salvation of all of God’s people. All of her time was dedicated to serving God and His people and she was often at the Holy Sepulchre of the Lord offering her fervent prayers as an intercession on the people’s behalf. In one such visit to Golgotha, the Archangel Gabriel appeared to her, as he had at the Annunciation, and announced her approaching departure from this life to eternal life. As a sign of this, the Archangel again gave her a palm branch. With these heavenly tidings the Mother of God joyfully returned to Bethlehem. She summoned the Righteous Joseph of Arimathea and the other disciples of the Lord, and told them of her impending Repose. The Most Holy Virgin prayed also that the Lord would have the Apostle John come to her. The Holy Spirit transported him from Ephesus, setting him in that very place where the Mother of God lay. After the prayer, the Most Holy Virgin offered incense, and John heard a voice from Heaven, closing Her prayer with the word "Amen." The Mother of God took it that the voice meant the speedy arrival of the apostles and the disciples together with the holy Bodiless Powers of heaven. The faithful, whose number by then was impossible to count, gathered together, says St John of Damascus, like clouds and eagles, to listen to the Mother of God. Seeing one another, the disciples rejoiced, but in their confusion they asked each other why the Lord had gathered them together in one place. The Apostle John, greeting them with tears of joy, said that the time of the Virgin's repose was at hand. Going in to the Mother of God, they saw her lying on the bed, and filled with spiritual joy. The disciples greeted her, and then they told her how they had been carried miraculously from their places of preaching. The Theotokos glorified God, because He had heard her prayer and fulfilled her heart's desire. The Holy Spirit had gathered them all together so that they might be granted the blessing of the All-Pure Virgin Mary, and more fittingly to see to the burial of the Mother of the Lord. She called each of them and blessed them and extolled them for their faith and the hardships they endured in preaching the Gospel of Christ. To each she wished eternal bliss, and prayed with them for the peace and welfare of the whole world. The hour of the Dormotion of the Theotokos came. A number of candles were burning. The holy disciples surrounded her beautifully adorned bed, offering praise to God. She prayed in anticipation of her dormition and of the arrival of her longed-for Son and Lord. Suddenly, the inexpressible Light of Divine Glory shone from the heavens, before which the blazing candles paled in comparison. All who saw it bowed in fear and reverence. Descending from Heaven was Christ, the King of Glory, surrounded by hosts of Angels and Archangels and other Heavenly Powers, together with the souls of the Forefathers and the Prophets, who had prophesied in ages past concerning the Most Holy Virgin Mary. Seeing Her Son, the Mother of God exclaimed: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour, for he has regarded the low state of His handmaiden” (Luke 1:46-48) and, rising from Her bed to meet the Lord, she bowed down to Him, and the Lord called her to enter into eternal life. Without any bodily suffering, as though in a happy sleep, the All-Holy Theotokos gave her soul into the hands of her Son and God. At this time there began a joyous angelic song. Accompanying the pure soul of the God-betrothed and with reverent awe for the Queen of Heaven, the angels exclaimed: “Rejoice, you who is blessed with Grace, the Lord is with You, blessed are You among women!” The Heavenly gates were opened, and greeting the soul of the Most Holy Theotokos, the Cherubim and the Seraphim glorified her with joy. The face of the Mother of God was radiant with the glory of Divine virginity, and from her body there came a sweet fragrance. Kissing the all-pure body with reverence and in awe, the disciples in turn were blessed by it and filled with grace and spiritual joy. Through the great glorification of the Most Holy Theotokos, the almighty power of God healed the sick, who with faith and love touched the holy relics. Bewailing their separation from the Mother of God, the apostles prepared to bury her all-pure body. The holy apostles carried the funeral bier upon their shoulders, and upon it lay the body of the Ever-Virgin Mary. The Apostle John went at the head with the resplendent palm-branch from Paradise. The other saints and a multitude of the faithful accompanied the funeral bier with candles and censers, singing sacred songs. This solemn procession went through Jerusalem to the Garden of Gethsemane. When the procession reached the Garden of Gethsemane, the faithful amidst the weeping and the wailing began the last kiss to the all-pure body. It was evening when the apostles were finally able to place it in the tomb and seal the entrance to the cave with a large stone. The apostles did not depart from the place of burial for three days, praying and chanting hymns in praise of God and His All-Holy Mother. Through the wise providence of God, the Apostle Thomas was not to be present at the burial of the Mother of God. Arriving late on the third day at Gethsemane, he lay down at the tomb and with bitter tears asked that he might be permitted to look once more upon the Mother of God and bid her farewell. The apostles, out of heartfelt pity for him decided to open the grave and permit him the blessing of venerating the holy relics of the All-Holy Theotokos. Having opened the grave, they found in it only the burial clothes and were thus convinced of the bodily ascent of the Most Holy Virgin Mary to Heaven. The earth it seems, recognised and responded to the Dormition of the All-Pure Theotokos. The Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary was assumed bodily into heaven as the earth was not able to contain the Holy Relics of the All-Pure Mother of God.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE All Reading Records need to be returned to the Library on or before Friday 20th August, to enable Mrs Bartlett to enter the details for the Reading Challenge. If the records are late, it may not guarantee a certificate at the end of the year.

DORMITION OF THE THEOTOKOS ASSEMBLY Year 3 will be presenting the assembly for the Dormition of the Theotokos on Friday 13th August in the Church Hall at 2pm. We thank Mrs Ieroklis and Mr Amditis for preparing the children for this assembly. All are welcome to attend. I take this opportunity to wish those who are celebrating their name day a Happy Name day and to everyone Καλο ∆εκαπενταυγουστο.

CHILDREN’S BOOK WEEK We will be celebrating Children’s Book Week this year from 23rd - 27th August. Activities have been planned for the children during their Library lessons. All Classes have been asked to help decorate the Library for this special week. The decorations will remain up until our Open Day, when parents may visit the Library to view the Children’s work.

APPEARANCE AND GROOMING

CHILDREN’S BOOK WEEK ACTIVITIES

It has come to our attention that some students are not abiding by the school rules regarding hair style and colour. Please note that boys hair must be kept reasonably short and no extreme styles are acceptable. Girls hair if long enough to be tied, must be tied back away from their faces with blue ribbon.

The children have been asked to help celebrate Children’s Book Week, by presenting various articles, based on the six special books read this term. These books are on the short list to be named picture book of the year.

4

Kindergarten: are helping to decorate the Library by completing a mobile, based on the story “Kip” written by Christina Booth.

THE COLONIAL SHOW

Year 1 and 2: are decorating the Library with a mosaic of pictures depicting the slogan:” Across the Story Bridge”

During Term 3, Year 4 are studying the British Colonisation of Australia. As an introduction to the unit, “Iconic Performances” came to St Spyridon College for a day of fun, interactive educational entertainment. The performance was called “The Colonial Show.”

Year 3 and 4: are designing and making an illustrated boot or shoe, based on the story: “Mr. Schumann the Shoeman” by John and Stella Danalis.

The show allowed the students to participate as the colonial time span came alive with authentic props and professional actors. The Colonial Show brings to life the story of Australia's colonisation.

Year 5: are working on a display of bridges for the Library based on the Book Week slogan.

The Colonial Show began with the students being introduced to the larrikin Irish convict James Murphy and female convict Ann Fowles who experienced the hardships of the day and the oppression and tyranny they faced at the hands of the soldiers (Redcoats). The Military Sergeant engaged the students in the story of the Military.

Year 6: are designing a monster to complement the story: “Mr. Chicken goes to Paris” by Leigh Hobbs

BOOK WEEK AUTHOR VISIT

The students relived the Voyage of the First Fleet, under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip, raised the King’s Colours and participated in a recruitment of soldiers into the New South Wales Corp nicknamed the Rum Corps.

The College has invited well-known Australian Children’s author, Patricia Bernard, to visit us on Friday 20th August 2010. Her performance, entitled “Who needs an ending?” draws on plot and character development, character scrap-books, story lines, first edit etc. She explains how to write a chapter book novel, how to draw a plan for a story, and how to use paragraphs, margins and speech marks to expand a story. The session will end with the student’s involvement in a play called “The Book Factory” and question time. Just a reminder to Years 3-6 students who have not paid for our author visit, to do so before the performance.

This is where the fun began as the students experienced the repercussions of the theft of damper and the arrest of the convict right in front of their eyes. Many Year 4 students came to school dressed in clothing from that period. We had convicts, captains, and even free settlers. Year 4 thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and gave the show a rating of 10/10! Miss Bletsogiannis and Mrs Dimitrelis

GRANDPARENTS INVITED The children from St. Spyridon College would like to invite all K-2 grandparents to help them celebrate Children’s Book Week on Thursday 26th August from 2.00pm. The children would love to hear their grandparents read to them, either in English, Greek or another language from their favourite stories read during their childhood. Greek and English books are available from the Library if needed. Mrs C. Bartlett Librarian

"Everything that is done in the world is done by hope." Martin Luther

Hope is one of the most powerful forces on the planet. It enables, it empowers. Hope overcomes failure, disappointment, rejection and difficulty. It is a strength. It gives you fortitude during illness and pain, and strength throughout a testing time. Hope gives life to vision. It expects that the sun will keep shining, the dawn will rise again and that you will not be presented with a difficultly that you do not have the power to overcome.

Without hope, despair, anxiety and fear reign. Hope does not eliminate those emotions. It does however give you the ability to push on regardless. Maintaining hope is what allows us to hold onto our dreams.

JEANS FOR GENES DAY Well done to all students who supported this annual fundraising event. From the school mufti day $400 was collected while Year 10 students who sold Jeans for Genes Day merchandise all day at Eastgardens, raised an additional $1000!

A big thank you to all, but especially Stephanie Satouris, Marielle Pizanis, Demi Flokis, Mariam Spilioti, Ellen Fotopoulos, Targreed Asaad, Despina Carpis, Sarah Hatzon, George Dokos, Arky Kalithrakas, James Syros, Yanni Vlahopoulos and Miss Kalithrakas Year 10 Adviser for all her efforts.

40 HOUR FAMINE APPEAL Last week SRC’s from Year 7 to Year 11 gave presentations to their year groups about encouraging student participation in the 40 Hour Famine Appeal which will occur over the weekend of the 20-22 August. SRC’s did a fabulous job at inspiring their peers into helping thοse who are suffering as a result of the Global Food Crisis. We look forward to great results from all participants!!

GIRLS FOOTBALL Although their season was dampened by rain, the girls displayed outstanding enthusiasm against much older and experienced competitors. Their persistence and perseverance each week was incredible. The girls did not expect to win the ISA competition nor did they expect to win many games, however, they continued to keep their goals small and were able to score their first goal in the last game. Their positive outlook allowed them to keep motivated and determined and this was rewarded in their final match. Well done to all Υear 7 students who represented their school with pride, other schools commented on your conduct and sportsmanship.
