ST SPYRIDON TRIVIA NIGHT 2010 -“IT WUSH REALLY GOOD!” A night of success thanks to our infamous hostess Effie Stefanides who captivated us all with her quick wit and charm and kept us crying with laughter throughout the evening. People were overwhelmed by her well sustained youthful image, her unique class and sophistication with the true woggy style and Graussie spirit that we love in her. Even though she “roasted” us and entertained us at our expense, she was proud and sincere in her support for our school fundraiser. She praised the school community for its values, achievements and its aims to provide for our younger Greek generation. She gave herself wholeheartedly nonstop all night to fulfil all our guests’ requests, from signing DVDs to posing for photos, to successfully drawing guests’ attention to all fundraiser activities, to roasting all donors for their generous prize offers. Effervescent Effie truly lifted the standard to another level which would make it very hard for any other compere to outdo her in the future. One of the many highlights for the night, was Effie dancing and singing to her favourite 80s song Stimulation. In true Effie style, she was besotted by young Stavro (alias Stavros Magoulias) the shpunk who quickly became part of her comedy act.

teams brainstormed a catchy name to outdo each other with some very interesting and inventive names. We would like to thank George Tsoukalas who engaged the talent of Effie and she thanked him sincerely by praising his Delvene Delaney role. We thank our funky DJ, Jimmy V, who entertained us through the Trivia competition as well as keeping the kefi going with dancing and singing that followed til late. A further thanks is expressed to Elia Economou, who is always a backbone for any event, who juggled many different roles from paparazzi to auctioneer to music engineer. Thank you to the executives of our Parish and College and the staff who enthusiastically supported Trivia. A very sincere thank you to our generous donors who will be thanked officially with a letter and Certificate of Appreciation. A special thank you is expressed to our Trivia guests who supported us so well in many ways on the night. The success of such a fundraiser is not just the hard and fast profit that results in the end but the huge team spirit and generosity that it brings out in those who attend and unite to have some serious fun.

JUNIOR
SCHOOL
REPORT
Our students are provided with a variety of opportunities to enrich their learning potential. As a result, many students discover that they have skills in areas that they had not previously explored. Students have dazzled us over the past two weeks with their maturity at peer support training, their innocence at the Dormition assembly, their sporting talent at the ASISSA Athletics Carnival and State Futsal Championship and their musical talent which was showcased at the IPSHA Performing Arts Festival. Enthusiasm and ‘having a go’ are the keys to success. We congratulate the teachers involved for encouraging and supporting students to be the best they can be.
IPSHA PERFORMING ARTS FESTIVAL On Tuesday 24th August, the St. Spyridon College choir sang at the IPSHA Performing Arts Festival which was held at Angel Place Recital Hall. They received warm applause from the audition with their rendition of “You Can’t Stop the Beat”. The students were then joined on stage by students from Pittwater House, Ravenswood School for Girls, Knox Grammar, Mt. Sinai College and Shoalhaven Anglican School for three combined choir pieces. We congratulate all students on their performance and thank Mrs Coyne who has worked with them over the last two terms to achieve such a high performance standard. Thank you to Father Steven and Mrs Stefanou who supported the choir with their attendance on Tuesday night, and to Miss Orfanos and Ms Finikakos for accompanying and supervising them.
Members of the Choir included: Electra Athanasatos, Anna- Maria Borean, Jacqueline Burleigh, Nicola Cafcaros, Catherine Dokos, Carissa Frazis, Bianca Frazis, Erin Giaras, Felicity Ginis, Christina Hatgis, Vivienne Hatzigiakoumis, Mersina Hristeff, Christiana Kilias, Nicholas Kollias, Constantinos Kollias, Stella Ktenas, Caitlin Liganaris, Chrissy Liganaris, Sarantos Makris, George Makris, Stavroulla Mavrolefterou, Jessica Mazis, Johnny Mouratidis, Maree Nikitopoulos, Merissa Papadakis, Sonya Paradisis, Eleni Preketes, George Raptis, Markella Roditis, Joanna Skouteris, Jordan Stojkovic, Kerryanne Syros, Tiffany Tsoukalas, Deyarna Xenos, Mariah Zouroudis.

On Tuesday 31st August we will be taking our sporting, music and whole school photo. Students need to come dressed in full school uniform (including blazers). Please make sure that all items of uniform are clean and pressed. Blazers must have buttons and shoes need to be polished.
The more we earn, the more we can spend so we encourage all our families to assist us. We will also be running an in school competition for the student who contributes the most vouchers. Start collecting!
CONGRATULATIONS
Unfortunately, the school is experiencing a head lice outbreak.
HEAD LICE OUTBREAK
Finding Head Lice We are asking all parents to examine their child’s hair and head for signs of lice or nits (eggs). Lice are hard to find as they move around the head. We are therefore suggesting that parents look for nits. Nits look very similar to dandruff and gather as tiny silver white eggs at the base of the hair shaft. To assist with the examining of the child’s hair we recommend that the following steps be taken: 1. To stun the lice and make it difficult for them to grip the hair, comb the child’s hair with a detection/removal product (Lice Combing Conditioner, etc) 2. Using a fine tooth metal comb, comb sections of the hair with the product. 3. Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a paper towel or tissue. 4. Look on the tissue and the comb for lice and eggs. 5. Comb through every part of the head at least 6 times. If any lice or nits are found, the child’s hair should be treated.
…… to Miss Xenos and her husband Richard on their recent marriage. We wish them life long happiness. ……. to Mr. & Mrs. De Pasquale and Isabella (1T) on the birth of the newest member of their family, baby Xanthi. May Christ shower them with His blessings.
COLES SPORTS FOR SCHOOLS The Junior School has registered in the Coles Sports for Schools program. Coles is offering every primary and secondary school across Australia the chance to get quality sporting equipment!
Treatment of Head Lice Please do not be alarmed if your child has contracted head lice. Although the condition is frustrating, it is easily treated with specialised products, which are available at your local pharmacy. As with all medicines it is important to follow the directions on the pack carefully for best results.
How does the Coles Sports for Schools program work? From Thursday 2 September until Sunday 31 October 2010 for every $10 spent at Coles Supermarkets, Coles Online, Bi-Lo and Pick’n Pay, customers will earn a Coles Sports for Schools voucher worth 1 point (given at check out).
Please make sure if head lice is found that management is ongoing until all lice and eggs are removed. You also need to notify the class teacher or school office. All family, friends and classroom contacts should be examined and managed if infested. The child will need to stay home till all lice are removed. If a child has lice at school parents will be called to collect them. We thank you for your understanding with this matter.
Students can collect these vouchers from family, friends and neighbours (even teachers!) and drop them into the voucher collection box, which will be at the front office. At the end of the program, our points will be tallied and we can choose the sporting equipment that we want. e.g. balls, goals, coaching sessions etc. They will

ICAS WRITING RESULTS 2010
SENIOR
SCHOOL
REPORT
This year for the first time, St Spyridon College entered the ICAS writing competition. Students were asked to write a narrative story using two out of four possible stimulus. Congratulations to the students who achieved a credit or distinction in this competition. As a school most students performed above the NSW/ACT average. Our school received 29 credits (top 30%) and 17 distinction (top 10%) certificates.
YEAR 5 & 6 VISITS TO THE SENIOR SCHOOL This week students from Years 5 & 6 visited the Senior School as part of the transition program. Judging from the excited faces and the positive evaluations given at the end of each groups visit, a great time was experienced by all. On these days students are given a sense of what Senior School is like, by having “Taster lessons in Science, Mathematics, History, Food Technology, and Physical Education to name just a few subject areas. Students are introduced to some of our routines, specialist learning areas, and have the opportunity to meet Senior School staff and older students who act as their peer support leaders during the visits.

help feed hungry kids and other disadvantaged people living in poor countries around the world. Last weekend students from across the entire school showed their support of this event by doing something real to help.
CONGRATULATIONS… … to Yioryios Papayioryiou of Year 12 Visual Arts. A recent drawing of his was shortlisted and exhibited in the North Sydney Art show.
The 40 hour famine involved students getting as many donations as they could from parents and friends, and going without something that they use or need for 40 hours. By doing this they also got a small taste of what life is like for 1 BILLION disadvantaged people across the world, and to appreciate how lucky we all are.
We wish him well for submissions that he has made to other competitions recently. Thank you to Ms Pringle, Visual Arts Teacher, for teaching and supporting Yioryios.
These are just some examples of things some of our students have given up for 40 Hours. No electrical appliances. No i-pod, mobile, or computer. No online games, or use of game consoles e.g., XBOX. No talking, communicate only by writing. No bed, sleep on the floor. No furniture, sit on floor. No use of a hand, tape the fingers of one hand together. Put your arm in a sling so you can’t use it. No sweets. If you are over 15 years and have parent permission, go without food, (only drink juice and water).

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS “Start by doing what is necessary, then what is possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible”
YEAR 7, 2011, INTERVIEWS Interviews of the new incoming Year 7 and their parents are almost complete. It has been very exciting meeting everyone face to face, and having the opportunity to tell you all a little more about upcoming events involved with transition to the Senior School. It is pleasing to see everyone bringing in their “Passport to Senior School” profiles. These not only provide a snapshot of each individual at this important stage of their schooling, but also when collated the resulting booklet acts as a lovely memento for Year 7, 2011 students to keep.
All participants in the 40 Hour Famine Appeal should have brought in their receipt books and donations this week. If any are still outstanding, please return them to Ms Kokinelis as soon as possible. We look forward to reporting the total raised in our next newsletter.
YEAR 8 PARENT FORUM
SAD FACTS
Thank you to all Year 8 parents who joined us on Wednesday evening for the Year 8 into 9 Forum on subject selections for 2011. Well done to Year 9 students Maria Mio and Leonidas Andrew, who volunteered to share some of their last years reflections and insights with younger peers. Students and parents are reminded that all subject selection forms must be returned to Ms O’Shea by Monday, 30th August, 2010.
Right now 1 BILLION people are suffering from chronic hunger. That’s a thousand million people! It also works out to be 1 in every 6 world –wide. 31 countries have populations who suffer chronic hunger. These people live in back streets of cities, in deserts and in mountain villages. More than 1 BILLION people can’t get enough food to survive, let alone lead a healthy life. Hunger and malnutrition is the number 1 risk to health world-wide. The Global Food Crisis (GFC), is caused by many factors. This includes: climate change, population growth, drought, floods, and various economic factors. .

Children and their families live in terrible conditions. Their homes are often tiny dirt floor shacks, sometimes they are nothing more than collections of odd bits of wood and other junk which have been tied together. There are no beds, or furniture. Everyone sleeps and eats in the one tiny room.
OPEN DAYS at universities and other institutions. See the table in this Newsletter. This is an ideal time to go to see what each institution is like. Go with your family or a group of friends. Look at the website as well to see what courses are available that interest you. They are fun days! OPTIONS FOR 2011 Last week, I gave a presentation, talk and handout to all the Year 12 students during Pastoral Care. This talk covered the various aspects of the post Year 12 options – universities, TAFE Colleges, private colleges and university colleges and the procedures for applying to them. I am hoping to see all of the Year 12 students in the next few weeks. Please make an appointment now for one of your study periods to see me.
Often children have nothing to eat at all. Sometimes when food is available it is very simple, like a bit of bread or a porridge and usually only once a day. Fruit and vegetables are rarely eaten, unless they are grown at home. This is because they are very expensive to buy at the markets. Children and adults are always hungry and malnourished, they are often cold, and suffer constant headaches and from various illnesses.
WHAT IS CAREER DEVELOPMENT? Career development is the process of managing life, learning and work over the life span. Career success takes more than good luck – it takes career management. Why is career development important? The following principles can help you as you navigate today’s ever-changing career landscape. o Change is constant – embrace it! Recognise that the world around you is constantly changing. Be open to change and remain alert to new opportunities. o Learning is ongoing. Strive for continuous personal improvement. Stay motivated by learning new skills and developing new talents and be ready for future opportunities. o Focus on the journey. Don’t focus on one destination only. Recognise that your career journey will be throughout your lifetime. Appreciate and value each experience along the way – even temporary opportunities may broaden your skills set. o Know yourself, believe in yourself and follow your heart. Pursue your passion to find fulfilment. Discover ways to combine your interests and career opportunities. o Access your allies. Rely on the support of your family, friends, mentors, colleagues and peers. Career success can be a team effort. Your networks (the people and contacts you know, both personal and business) are very useful if you are looking for a new job. Year 11 and 12 students have been given copies of the above.
Pastoral Care Highlights Yr 7 – Global Connections: an investigation into Global Citizenship. Yr 8 – Personal Development: Preparing to Step Up to Yr 9, & further development of knowledge about the nature of various subjects through directed panel questioning of Yr 9 elective representatives. On the 23rd August, Year 6 went to the Senior School for the day, to experience what it would be like next year. During the day we experienced some lessons that we would be having. First we had Maths for an hour, we did crazy animals, which is cutting up animals and mixing them up to get a new animal. Then we had recess, they gave us a packet of chips and juice. After recess, we had drama, we played games such as space jump. We played a game when we had to stand in a circle and make noises with an action. We went into the grass area, where we played some games kike frisby, captain ball, and many other games. When we finished, the boys and girls split up. The girls went and played netball, while the boys played soccer. We had lunch next, during lunch the Year 6’s played with the Year 7 football. While others played basketball with the Year 10’s. Lunch finished and we revised what we had learnt and liked about the Senior School. Overall, I enjoyed my day at the Senior School and can’t wait to be in Year 7 next year. Anastasia Barton 6P

Spyridon Team did us proud. We won every game, only losing one goal in the game just before the Grand Final. We came 3rd in the State. I would like to congratulate all the boys in the team and especially our Coach Mr Makridopolus for his time training the students. Their improvement in football skills was astonishing. The team: Panos Armenakas (Captain), Steven Antoniou, Athanasiois Athanasiou, Alex Cardamis, Jordan Makridopolus, Mitchell Knight, Peter Giokas, Aaron Nissirios and Alex Nissirios. This was the first time St Spyridon College has entered the Futsal State Championships and after this incredible result, I doubt it will be our last. Thursday 19th August 2010 The ASISSA Athletics Carnival took place at ES Marks Stadium where our College was represented by 52 athletes. Once again our students achieved great results. SENIOR SCHOOL REPORT NETBALL Congratulations to the Intermediate C’s who unfortunately were defeated in the ISA Netball Final only by 2 points. This is the second time the girls have qualified for the final but unfortunately have not been able to secure the victory. The girls have developed and improved their skills over the past years and have enjoyed the games whilst always remaining competitive. Sadly this was their last opportunity to play together as a year group as some students will be selected to represent the Open A’s. Thankyou, to Deanne Constantinou and Angelina Flokis who stepped in to coach the team in my absence.

team members for your dedication and commitment to a successful year of Netball. Special thanks go to the Year 12 students who were the core of the team as they managed to juggle study commitments and still represent their school. They acted as role models and mentors for the younger members of the team and have set the highest standard of netball since my arrival at St Spyridon College.

2010 STATE FUTSAL CHAMPIONSHIPS’ 12th August At Penrith Sports Stadium Of the 24 different school teams from all over NSW, St Spyridon College made the U16’s finals at the recent State Futsal Championships. What best characterizes this tournament is not only excellent sportsmanship on and off the courts but also determination, passion and pride. It is unfortunate to see the team lose against Endeavour Sports High school 6 goals to 2. Every student surpassed their own expectations of themselves in every match they encountered. In futsal, as in many other team sports it is always comforting knowing that as a team you have done all you can on any given day. My congratulations to the Year 9 boys (who are 15 or 14 years old) for winning all 3 round games, quarter finals and semi finals.
