SHOWCASE SUPERSTARS

Oh what a night and what impressive talent we were fortunate to be entertained by at the Senior School Showcase. Every performance item was unique and special. The P&F committee would so proudly like to congratulate each and every performer for their energy, talent and confidence in delivering a great variety show. Congratulations to all the performing arts teachers and all staff involved with the preparation of this most memorable night. We admire their commitment, drive and tireless efforts especially the ‘Spirit’ band who did so brilliantly to teach and inspire their students by example and appear on stage in a knock-out finale. This night is also a great credit to Mrs Stefanou and the College executive who drive and power such a mammoth event behind the scenes. While seated in the Sports and Performing Arts Centre, we truly praise Christina Tsaconas and the Parish executive for completing and providing a magnificent facility, which stands to enhance, share and celebrate the amazing drama, dance, singing and musical talents of our students. Its moments like these that place the building fund in a positive lime light.

FACTS SHEET Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Pertussis affects people of all ages, but can be very serious in babies. It can be prevented by immunisation at two, four and six months of age. Booster shots are needed for four-year-olds and teenagers, and adults living or working with small children. Treatment helps control further spread of the infection.

JUNIOR SCHOOL REPORT PERTUSSIS (WHOOPING COUGH)
What is pertussis? Pertussis (or whooping cough) is a disease caused by infection of the throat with the bacteria Bordetella pertussis.
Dear Parents and Staff, There have been confirmed cases of pertussis (whooping cough) at St Spyridon College.
What are the symptoms? ¾ Pertussis usually begins just like a cold, with a runny nose, tiredness and sometimes a mild fever. ¾ Coughing then develops, usually in bouts, followed by a deep gasp (or “whoop”). Sometimes people vomit after coughing. ¾ Pertussis can be very serious in small children. They might go blue or stop breathing during coughing attacks and may need to go to the hospital. ¾ Older children and adults may have a less serious illness, with bouts of coughing that continue for many weeks regardless of treatment.
Whooping cough is a highly contagious bacterial infection, which can be a very serious illness in infants. It is spread by droplets produced by coughing and sneezing. A person is contagious from the time they first become ill (when they may have symptoms of a cold) till approximately three weeks after they begin coughing. The infectious period can be shortened by the use of a 7-day course of an appropriate antibiotic. The infectious period ceases after 5 days of treatment, but the 7-day course must still be completed. The first sign of whooping cough is usually a running nose, followed by a cough, which becomes worse. The cough will often last for several months.
How is it spread? Pertussis is spread to other people by droplets from coughing or sneezing. Untreated, a person with pertussis can spread it to other people for up to three weeks after onset of cough. The time between exposure and getting sick is usually seven to ten days, but can be up to three weeks.
Whooping cough should be suspected in people who have a cough with any of the following characteristics: ¾ Small babies tend not to whoop but can go very red, perhaps blue, or stop breathing during coughing attacks.

Who is at risk? ¾ Anyone can get pertussis. ¾ People living in the same household as someone with pertussis are more likely to catch it. ¾ Immunisation greatly reduces your risk of infection, but reinfection can occur.
How is it treated? ¾ A special antibiotic – usually either erythromycin or clarithromycin – taken for seven days is used to treat pertussis. These antibiotics can prevent the spread of the germ to other people. ¾ Coughing often continues for many weeks despite treatment.
How is it prevented? Immunise your child on time ¾ The vaccine does not give lifelong protection against pertussis, and protection is sometimes incomplete. ¾ Children need to be immunised at two, four and six months. ¾ Boosters are needed at four years of age and again at 15 years of age. ¾ Immunisation is available through general practitioners and some local councils. Keep your baby away from people who cough ¾ Babies need two or three vaccinations before they are protected. For this reason, it is very important to keep people with coughing illnesses away from your baby so they don’t pass on pertussis or other germs.
What is the public health response? ¾ Doctors and laboratories must confidentially notify cases of pertussis to the local Public Health Unit. Public Health Unit staff can advise on the best way to stop further spread. ¾ Infectious children are restricted from going to pre-school and school. Unimmunised contacts may be excluded from child care unless they take the special antibiotics. For further information please contact your doctor, local public health unit or community health centre. Get immunised if you are an adult in close contact with small children A vaccine for adults is available. It is recommended: ¾ For both parents when planning a pregnancy, or as soon as the baby is born ¾ For adults working with young children, especially health care and child care workers.

It is your opportunity to come and see what your child has been doing, watch the performances, visit classrooms, look at your child’s books and celebrate your child’s learning and achievements with us.
If you are a close contact of someone with pertussis… ¾ ..watch out for the symptoms. If symptoms develop, see your doctor, take this fact sheet with you and mention your contact with pertussis. ¾ Some close contacts at high risk (e.g., children under one year, children not fully vaccinated, and women at the end of their pregnancy) and others who live or work with high-risk people may need to take antibiotics to prevent infection.
FATHERS DAY ASSEMBLY Congratulations to Kindergarten and Year 1 for a most informative and entertaining Fathers Day Assembly. Thank you to both class teachers and Greek teachers for preparing the children for their wonderful presentations. Thank you also to all those, especially dads, who made the time to come and share this special event with their children.

On the 10 of May 20 students from Years 4 – 6 sat the Greek Certificate of Attainment. The certificate is recognised world wide and can be used as an objective measure of a candidates level of proficiency in the Greek language. It was the first time that this exam was offered to students aged between 8-12. The students were required to complete activities on comprehension, reading, writing and speaking.

The listening comprehension took 25minutes and required students to listen and then respond to what they had heard. The reading comprehension took 30 minutes and students were required to read and complete questions based on the information presented. The writing task required students to write simple short texts, 160 – 180 words in length related to everyday situations. The final task was speaking where students had to complete two tasks: answer questions posed to them by an examiner and then to role play a situation with another student. This took 12 minutes.

As part of a Healthy Psychology project Samantha Spanos (ex student) and her group have instigated a three week project to enhance healthy eating among young children. This project is targeted at Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two students. This is a three week challenge, that involves giving a special card out to each child who purchases a salad box or a salad sandwich as a lunch order from the canteen on Thursday 8th, Thursday 15th and Tuesday 20th September. The children’s names are then put in a class draw to win a movie ticket. Please support this project which we hope in a small way may encourage our children to eat more healthy.

Did you know that if you bury a plastic bag in wet soil, it will still remain intact 3 weeks later? Paper and food scraps will start to decompose, and boy do they get smelly! Just imagine what our rubbish tips are like? These were the findings of the science experiment which Year 4 conducted to learn about the decomposition of materials.

We filled some plastic containers with soil and in each container we buried a food scrap, a piece of a paper bag and a piece of a plastic bag. We also poured some water to moisten the soil. We then placed the containers in a corner and left them unattended. Three weeks later, we observed the smelly results. The food scraps had started to rot, the paper got wet and was starting to break down but the plastic remained unaffected (apart from dirty). This got us thinking about all the plastic items we throw away and the effect they have on our environment.

THE AUSTRALIAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION FOR THE WESTPAC AWARDS 2011

Sponsored by the Westpac Banking Corporation, the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) is the original and largest of its kind in the world and is in now in its 34th year. Held this year on 4 August, the AMC is renowned for its high standard and integrity and has three aims:

The AMC is in some way a complement to the national numeracy assessment (NAPLAN) held in May. St Spyridon College-Senior School entered 99 students from Years 7-10 in this year’s AMC, and we received 6 Distinctions, 24 Credits and 38 awards of Proficiency. Distinction is awarded to students in the top 15% of each year and region. Credit is awarded to students in the top 50% of each year and region and Proficiency is awarded to students who achieve a preset score, but have not been awarded Credit or higher.

All students were asked to solve thirty problems, twenty five of which were multiple-choice, in 75 minutes. Anastasia Maloukis (Year 8), who received a Distinction and the highest percentile, 97, of any student, had this to say: “The Australian Mathematics Competition is a very competitive and challenging exam which allows students to apply their knowledge of maths to difficult yet interesting problems. The questions started off easy and progressively became more difficult. Although I was very nervous for the exam, I really enjoyed it and am surprised that I did so well! Everyone who participated should be congratulated for their efforts and I hope people give it a go next year. Special thank you to Mr Condous for being a great teacher and challenging us in class with questions, your efforts have been appreciated.�

SHOWCASE SHINES A LIGHT ON THE PERFORMING ARTS St Spyridon students had opportunity this week to showcase their talents in the performing arts by presenting a collection numbers to our school community in our new Sports and Performing Arts Centre. Over the past weeks performers have been putting in many hours of practice to create a show full of variety that highlights the many talents of our students. We hope that this inaugural event encourages and motivates all students towards further developing their interests in this area so that events such as this become a regular feature in our performing arts repertoire. Thank you to the staff members who assisted students prepare their items, especially Miss Savva, Miss Davis, Mrs Faletas, and Mrs Coyne. We are also grateful to all the teachers who assisted behind the scenes Ms Gonzalez (Backstage), Mr Sobolevski (Sound), Miss Kladakis (Backstage), Mr Zafiropoulos, and Mr Georgoulopoulos (Music and Backstage). Congratulations to all student performers, teacher performers, for a job well done, and to all stage and prop assistants for ensuring the smooth set transitions. Finally, we acknowledge the importance of the support of family and community members who took time out of their busy schedules to attend the performance on Thursday evening. It is very much appreciated by all.
LEGACY 2011 Last Friday four Year 10 students - Maria Mio (SRC), Daniel Daneshzand (SRC), Constance Synesios, and Costa Mavrolefterou, spent the afternoon at Eastgardens collecting for Legacy, as part of their Community Service. I am pleased to report that over $400 was raised. Well done!! Thank you also to Ms Kladakis who supervised the students during this activity
SRC BBQ On Thursday the SRC held a BBQ at lunch. All representatives enthusiastically assisted with setting up and serving their peers. Money raised will go towards beginning some of our environmental goals which includes, adopting a fruit tree in the Bilpin Fruit growing region, recycling mobile phones and batteries, and the

GREEN UP CLEAN UP Year 7 have been busy over the past week gathering sponsors for their annual Green Up Clean Up Campaign. This event is aimed at alerting students to practical things that they can do to help our environment, in addition to engaging in a school clean up and seed planting activity. Proceeds from their efforts will fund prizes and assist with the purchase of sports related equipment. So far over the past two years Year 7 contributions to this event have resulted in a variety of hand games being purchased for student use in Peer Support activities as well as a Marquis that will be used for Saturday ISA sports and other school activities. On Thursday the 25th August 2011, the ASISSA Athletics Carnival took place at ES Marks Athletics Field. Our College had a small number of athletes, 38 in number participating. Small in numbers but big in results and as always all students displayed sportsmanship and exceptional behaviour coupled with a competitive spirit.

Ο Γιώργος τη ρώτησε για τα ενδιαφέροντά της και τώρα η Χριστίνα του απαντά περιγράφοντας τα χόµπυ της. Η Χριστίνα λέει ότι της αρέσουν πολλά πράγµατα. Της αρέσει η κουβεντούλα µε τους φίλους της ή από το τηλέφωνο ή από το διαδίκτυο. Της αρέσει ιδιαίτερα το διάβασµα. Επίσης της αρέσει η µαγειρική και η κηπουρική. Λέει στον Γιώργο πως είναι µάλλον καταπληκτική µαγείρισσα και πως ο κήπος της είναι πολύ όµορφος! Μα πιο πολύ απ’ όλα, η Χριστίνα λατρεύει τον ελληνικό, παραδοσιακό χορό. Από πέντε χρονών µαθαίνει ελληνικούς χορούς. Χορεύει µε το συγκρότηµα της κυρίας ∆ώρας Στράτου και ξέρει όλους τους ελληνικούς χορούς! Της αρέσουν όλοι οι χοροί, αλλά λατρεύει τα νησιώτικα και το πεντοζάλι της Κρήτης.

In 2010, St Spyridon College Junior School decided to enter a trial team in the Football NSW Schools Futsal Regional Championships. St Spyridon students have had a long standing affiliation with soccer and have displayed both talent and passion for the game. However, we did not have high expectations as we were the new kids on the block. The team of 12 year old boys were coached by Mr Makridopolus, parent and soccer coach. The boys trained hard, placing second in the region and earning a chance to enter the state finals. The team surprised all by placing 3rd in the State, certainly a proud moment for all involved. Spurred on by this result, we decided that we would form more teams and begin a serious and regimented training program for 2011. Futsal is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, played in over 100 countries and boasting millions of players around the world and at St Spyridon we like to offer as many opportunities as possible in a range of sports. Sadly, Mr Makridopolus was unable to continue coaching due to his pressing work commitments. However, in the true spirit of support that St Spyridon has been blessed with over the years, Mr Conrad Nissirios, parent of twin boys in Year 5, Aaron and Alex, stepped up to offer his support. At Ray White Brighton Le Sands, Mr Nissirios has in his employ, former Australian and Olympic Representative and current Sydney Olympic coach, Mr Peter Tsekenis. Peter was seconded to train the 10 and 12 year old boys team every Friday between 7am and 8:30am for six months.

Two boys and one girls team were entered into the Futsal Regional Championships in Sutherland. The girls were coached by Mr Meintanis, Dean of the Senior School, unfortunately the girls were unable to progress further. They are all commended on their perseverance and sportsmanship both on and off the field. Both the boys teams progressed through the competition undefeated making it to the finals where the 12 years boys played against and defeated Newington College and the 10 year boys played against and defeated Santa Sabina. Both teams secured a position in the State Finals. The NSW Futsal Primary Schools Championships is a unique opportunity for schools to participate in a competition against a variety of schools State, Private and Independent in one of the largest school based single sport events in NSW and Australia a prestigious event indeed. The Championship took place at Penrith Sports Stadium at Herbert Street, Cambridge Park on Tuesday 9th August 2011. The best 24 schools were present for each age. The results are as follows: The 10 Year Boys placed 5th in the State, defeating Kings Langley PS: 5 - 2 Newtown PS: 3 - 1 Harrington Park PS: 5 - 3 In the Quarter Finals the boys lost to Our Lady Star of the Sea: 3-2, which went into extra time, the Golden Goal. The 12 year Boys placed 1st in the State, defeating Fremans Reach PS: 7 -1 Claremont Meadows PS: 9 - 1 Lost to Hills Grammar School: 2 - 3 In the Quarter Finals we defeated Newington College: 5-1 In the Semi Finals we defeated Balgownie PS: 3-2 In the Grand Finals we defeated King Park PS: 21
