THANK YOU ST SPYRIDON COLLEGE & PARISH COMMUNITY FOR A SUCCESSFUL & SENSATIONAL SPRING FAIR 2011

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT SCHOLARSHIPS Year 7 and Year 11, 2013

On Saturday 29 October, P&F members took pleasure in observing the empty spacious school yard transform into a potentially fun filled amusement park with dodgem car and aero bungee jump facilities being erected- to name a few. The excitement and strong team work spirit grew as members came together in the kitchen to be faced with one small challenge out of a countless many others which involved preparing 110 kilos of large fresh octopus for the BBQ stall for the next day. The tasks to follow were endless but exciting!

Applications are now invited from new and continuing students to sit for the following ACER Examination Scholarships: Year 6 (Year 7, 2013) A Year 6 Scholarship for the top Year 6 student applying for St Spyridon College will receive their tuition fees paid for four years, from Year 7 to Year 10.

The arrival of rain, twice, with a harder and heavier drop the second time, was not able to dampen the energy and enthusiasm of all involved. Stall holders bravely and immediately wiped up and freshened up their stalls to reinvite their guests. Skin creations treated you to some face therapy while Angela’s airbrushing decorated your body, and Step into Life prepared you for outdoor personal training, while Mary’s flowers brightened your spirits, while Fuss and White Castro accessorised your image, while Replicas R Us and Nikos Art took you to the world of Greek warriors, while Bank of Cyprus handled your money matters. The experiences were many more and diverse. Indulging in real fun fair food from gelato to fairy floss from Floss Boss to cupcakes

by Minis was great! Our Greek popular food favourites still included BBQ souvlaki, BBQ octopus, mouth-watering loukoumades and the delicious homemade Greek sweets. We sincerely thank our regular generous donors whose efforts made a great contribution to the success of the day. We look forward to thanking them individually very soon.

Year 10 (Year 11, 2013) Two scholarships for the two top Year 10 students will receive their tuition fees paid for two years.

Closing date for applications is Monday, 6th February, 2012. ACER scholarship examinations will be held on Saturday, 25th February, 2012.

UNIFORM SHOP

The performers ranging from All Sorts dancing to Belinz zumba kids parties to the Greek duo instrumentalists – Christos Evripidou and Sam Christodoulides - to our talented students Greek dancing, created such fun fair atmosphere which made it impossible for visitors to pull away from on the day. A special thank you is expressed to our volunteers who worked hard to prepare for the Fair and/or man stalls. A final thank you to all the staff who supported P&F efforts and requests especially Mrs Tsaconas, Father Steven, Father

JUNIOR SCHOOL REPORT

Sotiri, Mrs Stefanou, Mrs Hamer, Mrs Synesios, Ms Giannakopoulos, Mrs Kerameas, Mrs Simicos, Mrs Doyle, Mrs Balayannis and our hardworking General Assistants and College cleaners. Thank you to Mr E Economou for his MC role and organisation of the sound system. The success of the day created a great profit of $15,000 which we look forward to presenting to the College at a key moment in the near future.

CONGRATULATIONS P & F What an absolutely wonderful Spring Fair we had last Sunday. Congratulations to Mrs Stamoulis and her incredible committee for all their organisation and hard work. Thank you to all the parents who sent in cakes and stepped forwards to help. The children absolutely loved the new activities and had a great time.

Congratulations also to Mrs Haskas and our children for a wonderful display of Greek Dancing showing the progression from Kindergarten to Year 6. Thank you to Miss McCarthy and Year 6 for all the work they put into organising the Toy Stall. I am sure you would have all been most impressed with the creative talent that was shown with our students craft stall. Thank you to all our teachers for the preparation of the items and for manning the stall all day.

Parents if you were unable to purchase your child’s item at the Fair please purchase it from your child’s teacher. It is very disheartening for children to feel that their parents do not want the item that they made for them with such love and care.

Again thank you to all for a wonderful fun filled day with lots of food, drink and activity!

CONGRATULATIONS We were very proud of Leon Kouzoukos who recited the poem for OXI DAY in our Church and to Steffie Papadopoulos for reciting the poem at the Archdiocese. They both presented beautifully.

We were also very proud of our Infants children and our Year 6 Captains and Prefects who represented the Junior School in the Church.

THE CHOIR Last week our choir with Mrs Coyne and Mrs Synesios went to see the musical ‘Mary Poppins’ as a reward for their wonderful efforts in the choir but also to experience the joys of a musical. Both teachers came back extremely happy not only because it was a great performance but also because so many of the people at the theatre congratulated them on the behaviour and the appearance of our children. We can all be very

proud of our children, we know they are very special but it’s always great to hear such positive feedback from others.

Year 6 Camp to Canberra Depart school at 6.15am on Wednesday 9th November and return to school on Friday 11th November at 6pm.

YEAR 5

MUSICAL SHOWCASE

For the past two weeks, Year 5 have been presenting their speeches for Leadership positions next year. We, that is both teachers and students, have been most impressed and entertained with the presentations. The students spoke clearly and with expression and certainly had some wonderful ideas for next years functions.

On Friday 2nd December, K-6 will be sharing their musical talents with you. The teachers along with Mrs Coyne are preparing the musical items. We ask parents to assist us with the costuming. A note will be sent to you regarding this. The performance will be held at the Sports and Performing Arts Centre (SPACe) at the Senior Campus.

However, voting will be judged not only on speeches but long term behaviour, attitude and involvement in activities for the betterment of our school.

The competitions are now over and our children and parents were amazing with the number of vouchers that were brought in. Thank you everyone. We will let you know in the next newsletter what we have purchased with our points.

KALANTA

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION MORNINGS

As is our tradition at this Parish, the students of the College are invited to participate in the carol singing to parishioners in their home.

2012 Kindergarten children will attend orientation morning sessions at the Junior School on Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 16th November 2011. We look forward to welcoming our future students on theses days.

The students move from house to house. Before singing, the students ask “Na ta poume?” (May we sing for you?). The students are welcomed into the house to sing the Kalanta. They are then given a donation for the church, and offered sweets and refreshments. Upon leaving they say “Ke tou hrono” (Till next year), and proceed to the next house.

CAMPS YEAR 3 TO YEAR 6 Year 3 Camp to Deer Park Depart school at 8.15am on Thursday 10th November and return to school on Friday 11th November at 3.15pm.

The dates for this year are Monday 12th – Thursday 15th December, from 5pm – 8:30pm. If you would like to participate please see Mrs Synesios.

Year 5 Camp to Bathurst Depart school at 7.15am on Wednesday 9th November and return to school on Friday 11th November at 5.30pm.

Connor Giavis has been selected by Football NSW to participate in the Skill Acquisition Program (SAP), formerly Project 22.

The SAP program is a 12 month scholarship offered by Football NSW, providing an elite development program for identified players.

Leonidas and Kalioppe also recited their poems at Newtown (Greek Welfare Centre) at the Seniors Group on Thursday, 27th October, 2011.

Thank you to Mrs Faletas and Ms Alexandropoulou for preparing the students. I also commend the students of Years 7-9 and their Year Advisers and other Teachers who attended St Spyridon Church on Sunday, 30th October, 2011.

Over 200 talented footballers from the Eastern Suburbs, Canterbury and St George regions trialed over 4 intensive training sessions.

This is a wonderful achievement. Only 9 players were selected and Connor was one of only two boys in the entire Eastern Suburbs of Sydney to be selected for the under 11/12 age group.

PARENT FORUM YEAR 12, 2012 On Monday, 31st October, Year 11 students and their parents attended a Parent Forum.

Mrs Stefanou presented all students with their Year 12 badges. Mrs Michalski (Board of Studies Liaison Officer) spoke about the Higher School Certificate. The School HSC 2012 Assessment Handbook was distributed.

We wish the Year 12 class of 2012 all the best as they begin their HSC Assessment tasks.

HEAD LICE OUTBREAK Unfortunately, the school is experiencing a head lice outbreak. We are asking all parents to examine their child’s hair and treat accordingly.

As with all medicines it is important to follow the directions on the pack carefully for best results.

This 11 day compulsory program is designed for the Year 10 students who will be continuing their studies at St Spyridon College for Years 11 and 12.

SENIOR SCHOOL REPORT

Over the 11 days students will attend workshops on managing the Board of Studies paperwork, study skills, the literacy demands of the HSC, spiritual enlightenment and good works in the community, first aid and global connections.

Students will also visit Pantanassa Monastery (boys) and Holy Cross Monastery (girls). They will be introduced to their subjects for Year 11 and receive their Year 11 Assessment Handbook.

‘OHI’ DAY CELEBRATIONS Congratulations to Leonidas Andrew, Year 10, who recited his poem at the official celebrations at the Archdiocese on Sunday, 30th October, 2011.

Representatives from Year 11 also attended and were flagbearers.

Congratulations to Kalioppe Kefalas, Year 8, who recited her poem at St Spyridon Church on Sunday, 30th October, 2011 and the School Assembly on Friday, 28th October, 2011.

Every student in Year 10 will be presented with a Certificate of Graduation.

The 10th November is a day where the whole school community come together and celebrate π day.

You may have thought that this is a strange countdown or a misprint, but to us Maths enthusiasts (and I’m hoping YOU reading, is one of them too!), it is so much more than merely ‘just’ a number but rather it is the “famous π (Pi) number.

How famous you say?

Glad you asked.

A little about the humble π; π (Pi) sounds like pie and is one of the most important constants in Mathematics. It represents the ratio of any circle’s circumference to its diameter (don’t turn the page please...hang in there and keep reading. It does get interesting I promise!) The Greek letter π, often spelled out as ‘pi’ was adopted as a symbol for the number from the Greek word perimeter, “περίµετρος”.

A day where we are all HAPPY as π!

This amazing number helps us calculate circumference and area of circles and volume of any sphere or cone. Turn back the clock when you were in Year 8 Mathematics and I’m sure A = πr2 and C = 2πr were two formulas you were in awe of!

So, why is this number celebrated on particular days of the year, all over the world?

So many of us Maths enthusiasts are fascinated by this number π. Why? 1. π is an irrational number, that is, it cannot be written as a simple fraction or as an exact decimal with finite number of decimal places.

Impressed yet?

2. π is a transcendental (no...nothing to do with your teeth!) number, meaning it will continue infinitely without repeating. With the use of computers today, π has been calculated to over 1 TRILLION DIGITS past the decimal point!

has taught me that no matter how old or young you are you can still debate. It has also given me a lot of confidence because I didn’t know about debating. Those speeches I have written, I am extremely proud of! The best thing about debating is going to other schools, meeting children from different cultures and of course making new friends.

DEBATING GALA DAY - Wednesday 19th October In my first debate, I was shaking with fear. Now, I have developed my listening skills so that I can rebut. Being in the debating team has taught me many things like speaking in front of people I don’t know with confidence. The best thing about debating is meeting other students. The challenging thing is that you have to make sure you speak in a clear voice.

Nicholas Drakoulis 3A In my first debate, I was really, really, really, nervous. I couldn’t read the words of my speech, they were blurry. The fright had reached my eyes!

Then I improved so I didn’t get any more jitters.

Writing the speech was harder and don’t start me on the rebuttals! Being in the debating team has taught me about confidence and speaking clearly in front of a large audience. It scares you but it is a great experience.

Katherine Tsingos 3S My Debating Experience In my first debate, I was shaking and sweating a lot. Gradually I felt better and better. In my last debate, I was with Demetrios and Johnny and even though I was nervous, my confidence had improved so much. One of the most embarrassing moments was when I dropped a palm card as I was speaking and Mrs Hamer was in the audience! I highly recommend debating, so parents please influence your children to take part in debating next year.

Demetrios Avdalis 6M In my first debate, I was very nervous when I had to speak in front of more than 15 people. I can tell you, it’s not easy first time around. The best thing about debating is the speaking and the snacks after the debates! The challenging thing about debating is preparing for the debate and rebutting the opposing team because you have to think on your feet. That is really hard. The pressure is on!

Dean Theodorakakis 5A In my first debate, I was frightened. Being in the debating team has taught me how to speak to others when I disagree with them. So we can use words instead of going to war. The best thing about debating is going to other schools and presenting our arguments about a topic.

In my first debate, I was shaking and very nervous. As I spoke I became more confident. At the Debating Gala Day, I was even more confident and started to sound like a professional!

Being in the debating team has taught me to rebut the opposing team and to speak confidently to a large group of people. The best thing about debating is learn about different topics, e.g. should we buy Australian made.

The thing that surprised me the most about participating in debating is how much fun it is. It is a great way of learning about different topics.

The challenging thing about debating is being the Chairperson and making sure you say everything in the correct order. Being in the debating team taught me confidence and showed me how important debating really is.

In my first debate, I was very nervous. Being in the debating team has taught me self-confidence.

The best thing about debating is meeting new people and visiting other schools.

Καταλάβαινα ότι µια καινούρια αρχή σε µια άλλη χώρα θα ήταν πάρα πολύ δύσκολη, αλλά δεν υπήρχε άλλη επιλογή για µια καλύτερη ζωή για µένα και την οικογένειά µου.

- Γιατί διάλεξες την Αυστραλία και όχι κάποια άλλη χώρα; - ∆ιάλεξα την Αυστραλία και όχι κάποια άλλη χώρα γιατί όπως είπα πιο πριν εκεί είχε πάει ο αδελφός µου. Μου έγραφε γράµµατα συχνά και µου έλεγε πως τα πράγµατα στην µακρινή Αυστραλία ήταν πολύ καλά. Μου έλεγε πως υπάρχουν πολλές δουλειές. Μου υποσχέθηκε πως θα µέναµε όλοι µαζί και ότι σε λίγο χρονικό διάστηµα θα µπορούσαµε ν’ αγοράσουµε δικό µας σπίτι στην Αυστραλία. Μου έλεγε ότι η Αυστραλία ήταν µια πολύ ήσυχη χώρα και ότι είχε πολλούς Έλληνες µετανάστες εκεί. Επίσης µου έλεγε πως ο καιρός στην Αυστραλία ήταν πολύ ωραίος, ότι είχαν συνέχεια λιακάδες ακόµη και τον χειµώνα και ότι δεν είχαν καθόλου κρύο ούτε χιόνια όπως το χωριό µας.

- Ήρθες µόνη σου ή µε κάποιο άλλο µέλος της οικογένειας ή φίλο/η; - Ήρθα µε τον άνδρα µου και τα δύο µας παιδιά. Τον γιο µου που ήταν πέντε ετών και την κόρη µου που ήταν δύο.

- Ποια διαδικασία έπρεπε να ακολουθήσεις στην Ελλάδα για να µπορέσεις να έρθεις εδώ στην Αυστραλία; (χαρτιά, ιατρικές εξετάσεις...)

- Για να πάω στην Αυστραλία έπρεπε να έχω πρόσκληση από κάποιον που ήδη ήταν εδώ. Έτσι ο αδελφός µου, που είχε έρθει πριν από µένα, ετοίµασε όλα τα απαραίτητα έγγραφα και µου έστειλε πρόσκληση. Είχε γράψει ότι είχε ήδη βρει δουλειά για µένα στο εργοστάσιο και ότι ζητούσαν και άλλους εργάτες εκεί. Αυτό έπρεπε φυσικά να εγκριθεί πρώτα από τα σχετικά υπουργεία. Έτσι πέρασε αρκετός χρόνος. Τελικά, αφού εγκρίθηκε η πρόσκληση έπρεπε µετά να περάσουµε υποχρεωτικά κάποιες ιατρικές εξετάσεις αίµατος, ούρων και να βγάλουµε ακτινογραφίες. Τις κάναµε όλες στην Αθήνα διότι τότε στο χωριό δεν υπήρχε ιατρικό κέντρο. Μου έστειλε τα λεφτά ο αδερφός µου γιατί όλη αυτή η διαδικασία είχε έξοδα και εµείς δεν είχαµε ούτε να φάµε... Μετά από τις εξετάσεις πήγαµε στην Αυστραλιανή πρεσβεία όπου ένας κύριος µας ρώταγε διάφορα πράγµατα για το πώς και γιατί θέλαµε να πάµε στην Αυστραλία. Θυµάµαι να συµπληρώνουµε πολλά έγγραφα και να βάζουµε πολλές υπογραφές. Κάναµε αίτηση και για διαβατήρια για πρώτη φορά αφού δεν είχαµε ακόµη τότε. Όλη αυτή η διαδικασία πήρε περίπου δύο χρόνια να τελειώσει.

Αγαπητοί γονείς και φίλοι, Πρώτα – πρώτα θα ήθελα να συγχαρώ τα παιδιά µας, Καλλιόπη Κεφαλά από την Β΄Γυµνασίου και Λεωνίδα Ανδρέου από την Α’ Λυκείου που απήγγειλαν ποιήµατα για την επέτειο της 28ης Οκτωβρίου 1940. Η Καλλιόπη στην εκκλησία του Αγίου Σπυρίδωνα, στο Ελληνικό Κέντρο Προνοίας και στη γενική συγκέντρωση του σχολείου την Παρασκευή 28/10/11 και ο Λεωνίδας στο Ελληνικό Κέντρο Προνοίας και στην Ιερά µας Αρχιεπισκοπή. Και στους δυο αξίζουν τα θερµά µας συγχαρητήρια! Επίσης να συγχαρώ όλα τα παιδιά που πήραν µέρος στην θεατρική παράσταση «Αντιγόνη» τον περασµένο Αύγουστο µια και απόσπασµα της παράστασης αυτής µας έδωσε το 3ο βραβείο στο Μαθητικό ∆ιαγωνισµό Κινηµατογράφου. Στο διαγωνισµό αυτό συµµετείχαν πολλά σχολεία από πολλές πολιτείες της Αυστραλίας. Στη συνέχεια να σας κάνω γνωστό ότι στο τεύχος αυτό δηµοσιεύουµε την εργασία µιας µαθητρίας της Γ Γυµνασίου που τελειώνει φέτος την Α’ Λυκείου στο µάθηµα των Ελληνικών. Η εργασία είναι µια συνέντευξη σχετική µε τη µετανάστευση εφόσον αυτή ήταν και η ενότητα µε την οποία εργάζονταν τον τελευταίο καιρό. Καλή ανάγνωση και Χρόνια Πολλά σε όσους γιόρταζαν του Αγίου ∆ηµητρίου. κ. Μ. Φαλέτα Συνέντευξη που πήρα από τη γιαγιά µου - Γιαγιά, πόσων χρονών ήσουνα όταν άρχισες να σκέφτεσαι να µεταναστεύσεις; - Ήµουν 25 ετών όταν έφυγε ο αδελφός µου από το χωριό µας για να µεταναστεύσει στην Αυστραλία. Από εκείνη την ηµέρα άρχισα και εγώ να σκέφτοµαι να φύγω από την Ελλάδα.

- Πόσων χρονών τελικά ήσουν όταν µετανάστευες; Ποια χρονολογία ήταν; - Τελικά ήµουν 35 χρονών όταν µετανάστευσα στην Αυστραλία το 1964.

- Γιατί αποφάσισες να µεταναστεύσεις; Πώς ήταν η κατάσταση τότε στην Ελλάδα; - Στην αρχή η απόφαση ήταν δύσκολη γιατί είχα παντρευτεί και είχα και δυο µικρά παιδιά. Παρ’ όλ’ αυτά, ήµουν αποφασισµένη να φύγω γιατί η κατάσταση στο χωριό ήταν πολύ δύσκολη. ∆ουλειές στο χωριό δεν υπήρχαν εκτός από αυτές στα χωράφια µας, που δεν έφταναν για να ζει καλά ολόκληρη οικογένεια! Άλλους πόρους ζωής δεν είχαµε και µερικές φορές εµείς οι µεγάλοι πέφταµε για ύπνο νηστικοί για να φάνε τα µικρά! Μας είχαν ρηµάξει οι πόλεµοι, τα χιόνια, η φτώχεια και όλα αυτά µόνο δυστυχία ήταν!

- Ποιος ήταν ο αρχικός σκοπός σου, γιαγιά; Να δουλέψεις για µερικά χρόνια και να γυρίσεις πίσω στην Ελλάδα ή να µείνεις για πάντα εδώ; - Αρχικός σκοπός µας ήταν να µείνουµε µόνο για λίγα χρόνια , να µαζέψουµε λίγα χρήµατα και να κάνουµε κάποια δική µας δουλειά στην Ελλάδα. Όµως περνούσαν τα χρόνια κι εµείς συνηθίσαµε στον τρόπο ζωής της Αυστραλίας και µετά δεν θέλαµε να φύγουµε παρ’ όλο που µας έλειπε η πατρίδα µας. Νιώθαµε σιγουριά εδώ, είχαµε παιδιά...

- Πώς περνούσες τον ελεύθερό σου χρόνο; Έκανες παρέα µε άλλους Έλληνες ή µε µετανάστες άλλης εθνικότητας; - Ελεύθερος χρόνος δεν υπήρχε και πολύς. Η ζωή µας ήταν δουλειά, σπίτι, ύπνος και πάλι δουλειά. Νύχτα πηγαίναµε στο εργοστάσιο και νύχτα φεύγαµε. Μόνο την Κυριακή µαζευόµαστε όλοι σε µερικά ελληνικά σπίτια και κάναµε παρέα. ∆εν κάναµε παρέα µε άλλης εθνικότητας µετανάστες γιατί µόνο Ελληνικά µιλάγαµε. Η ζωή µας ήταν µια σκέτη ρουτίνα και γι’ αυτό το λόγο νιώθαµε έντονα ότι ήµασταν στην ξενητειά, µακριά από την όµορφη πατρίδα µας. Στα εργοστάσια που δουλεύαµε γνωρίσαµε κι άλλους Έλληνες µετανάστες και την ώρα του φαγητού µοιραζόµασταν την κούρασή µας και τον πόνο µας για την πατρίδα.

- Πώς διασκεδάζατε τότε; - Η διασκέδασή µας ήταν µόνο την Κυριακή. Πηγαίναµε εκκλησία το πρωί και µετά όπως είπα πριν, µαζευόµασταν σε κανένα ελληνικό σπίτι για να φάµε και να µιλήσουµε για την ζωή µας στην πατρίδα. Τα πρώτα χρόνια δεν είχε κανένας µας τηλεόραση στο σπίτι του, αλλά κάπου – κάπου πηγαίναµε να δούµε ελληνικό κινηµατογράφο.

- Μετά από πόσο καιρό πήρες την υπηκοότητα; Ήταν εύκολο; - Πήραµε την Αυστραλιανή υπηκοότητα το 1974, δηλαδή 10 χρόνια µετά από τον ερχοµό µας. ∆εν ήταν δύσκολο, ήµασταν µε πολλούς άλλους µετανάστες και όλοι κάναµε το ίδιο πράγµα. Ο ένας βοηθούσε τον άλλο να επαναλάβουµε «την υπόσχεσή» µας στην Αυστραλία και στους νόµους της.

- Τι απέγινε µε την οικογένειά σου όταν ήρθατε; - Όπως είπα πιο πάνω, ήµουν παντρεµένη και µε δυο παιδιά όταν ήρθα, αλλά έκανα δυο παιδιά ακόµη εδώ.

- Κατάφερες να µάθεις καθόλου Αγγλικά; - Όταν ήρθα στην Αυστραλία δεν ήξερα ούτε ναι ούτε όχι να πω στ’ Αγγλικά, που λέει ο λόγος! Έµαθα Αγγλικά εδώ, όχι πολλά επειδή δεν

- Με ποιο µέσο έφτασες εδώ γιαγιά; Αν ήταν καράβι ποιο ήταν το όνοµά του; Πόσο διήρκεσε το ταξίδι; - Ήρθαµε µε καράβι. Τότε δεν υπήρχε άλλος τρόπος. Το καράβι το λέγανε «Πατρίς». Το ταξίδι διήρκεσε τριανταµία ολόκληρες µέρες!

- Θυµάσαι κάποια πράγµατα για το ταξίδι αυτό; Πώς περνούσαν οι µέρες του ταξιδιού; - Αυτό που θυµάµαι καλά ήταν οι ζαλάδες µου. Το καράβι µε πείραξε πολύ και έκανα συνέχεια εµµετό. ∆εν µπορούσα να φάω σχεδόν καθόλου κι είχα αδυνατίσει πάρα πολύ. Θυµάµαι επίσης και τον κόσµο, πολύς κόσµος στο καράβι! Άλλοι ήταν µόνοι τους και άλλοι µε ολόκληρες οικογένειες σαν κι εµάς. Κούναγε το ρηµάδι το καράβι και µας έφευγαν τα πιάτα µε το φαγητό πάνω από τη µεγάλη τραπεζαρία. Το ταξίδι µου φαινόταν ατέλειωτο. Ευτυχώς που τα παιδιά µας τα κοιτούσε ο άνδρας µου γιατί την πιο πολλή ώρα εγώ ήµουν ξαπλωµένη στο κρεβάτι µ’ έναν κουβά δίπλα µου.

- Σε ποιο µέρος της Αυστραλίας έφτασες πρώτα; Σε περίµενε κανείς; - Φτάσαµε πρώτα στη Μελβούρνη, αλλά µόνον αυτοί που θα έµεναν εκεί κατέβηκαν. Εµείς συνεχίσαµε το ταξίδι και κατεβήκαµε στο λιµάνι του Σύδνεϊ. Εκεί µας περίµενε ο αδελφός µου µε την οικογένειά του. Αχ! Επιτέλους, είπα, να πατήσω γη!

- Πού µείνατε τον πρώτο καιρό; - Τον πρώτο καιρό µείναµε στου αδελφού µου το σπίτι, αλλά ήµασταν πολύ στριµωγµένοι επειδή µέναµε τρεις οικογένειες σε ένα µικρό σπίτι.

- Σου είχαν βρει δουλειά πριν έρθεις ή έψαξες για δουλειά όταν ήρθες εδώ; - Ο αδερφός µου είχε ήδη φροντίσει και πήρε το σύζυγό µου κι εµένα στο εργοστάσιο που δούλευε αυτός. Αρχίσαµε την επόµενη ηµέρα από τον ερχοµό µας. Η νύφη µου πρόσεχε τα παιδιά µας γιατί εκείνη έραβε ρούχα στο σπίτι.

- Ποια ήταν η πρώτη σου δουλειά; Πόσο ήταν το µεροκάµατο τότε; - Όπως είπα παραπάνω µε πήρε ο αδελφός µου στο εργοστάσιο που δούλευε αυτός. Το εργοστάσιο έφτιαχνε µπρίζες και ο µισθός µας ήταν περίπου 10 λίρες την εβδοµάδα, αλλά δουλεύαµε και το Σάββατο υπερωρίες.

- Ποιες άλλες δουλειές έκανες; - ∆ούλεψα σε πολλά εργοστάσια και µετά δούλεψα σε ένα µεγάλο καθαριστήριο όπου πλέναµε και σιδερώναµε σεντόνια.

- Πώς ήταν οι συνθήκες εργασίας τότε; Ήσουν ευχαριστηµένη από τα αφεντικά και τους συναδέλφους σου; - Οι συνθήκες εργασίας ήταν δύσκολες γιατί δεν ξέραµε και την Αγγλική γλώσσα εδώ. ∆ουλεύαµε πολλές ώρες και κουραζόµουνα πολύ. Μερικά

ζωή. ∆εν ήθελε ούτε ν’ ακούσει για να ‘ρθει µαζί µας! Έλεγε πως άµα φύγει από την Ελλάδα θα πεθάνει! Η θεία µου αγκάλιαζε τη µάνα µου και την παρηγορούσε ότι θα έρθουµε πίσω γρήγορα, αλλά και εγώ το ίδιο πίστευα. Ένιωθα χαρά επειδή πίστευα πως η πόρτα άνοιγε για να έχουµε ένα καλύτερο µέλλον. Θα φεύγαµε από την φτώχεια και τη µιζέρια. Θα µπορούσα να στέλνω χρήµατα και στη µάνα µου να περνάει και αυτή καλύτερα. Αγωνία είχα γιατί δεν ήξερα πώς θα είναι αυτή η άλλη χώρα, η Αυστραλία. Θα µπορούσαµε να ζήσουµε σε ένα άγνωστο για µας κράτος που ήταν τόσο µακριά; Χιλιάδες σκέψεις περνούσαν από το µυαλό µου και όλα µου φαίνονταν σαν ένα όνειρο.

- Από όλη σου τη ζωή και από όλα όσα πέρασες και έζησες τι είναι αυτό που δεν θα ξεχάσεις ποτέ; - Όλα όσα πέρασα µέσα στο καράβι και όλα όσα είδα την πρώτη στιγµή που κατέβηκα από το καράβι δεν θα τα ξεχάσω ποτέ! Νοµίζω όµως πως αυτό που µου µένει χαραγµένο µέσα µου και παρά την ηλικία µου δεν το ξεχνώ, είναι το βλέµµα της µάνας µου όταν µε ξαναείδε µετά από 20 ολόκληρα χρόνια. Ο πόνος του χωρισµού όλα αυτά τα χρόνια µας βγήκε εκείνη τη στιγµή. «Παιδί µου!» φώναζε συνέχεια ενώ µε κρατούσε σφιχτά στην αγκαλιά της. Τι να σου λέω τώρα, δύσκολα χρόνια περάσαµε κι εµείς κι οι γονείς µας, αλλά έχουµε την υγεία µας και γι’ αυτό και για ό,τι καταφέραµε στην ξενητειά πρέπει να λέµε πάντα δόξα τω Θεώ που µας βοήθησε!

χρειάζονταν τότε και δεν υπήρχε κι ο χρόνος. Κάναµε παρέα µε Έλληνες, µιλούσαµε τη γλώσσα µας και στη δουλειά επάνω, αρκεί να µας έδειχναν µε τα χέρια τους τι χρειαζότανε να κάνουµε και το µαθαίναµε. Κάναµε χειρονακτική εργασία.

- Αν σκοπός σου ήταν να γυρίσεις στην Ελλάδα µετά από µερικά χρόνια τι σε εµπόδισε και δεν γύρισες; - Όντως, σκοπός µας ήταν να γυρίσουµε στην Ελλάδα, αλλά όλο και κάτι συνέβαινε. Την πρώτη φορά που είπαµε να φύγουµε, έµεινα έγκυος στο τρίτο µας παιδί. Το ίδιο συνέβη µε το τέταρτο παιδί µας. Έτσι, ποτέ δεν βρέθηκε ο κατάλληλος καιρός. Πάντα λέγαµε «του χρόνου θα φύγουµε» όχι φέτος, φέτος δεν µπορούµε. Ερχόταν «του χρόνου» και πάλι κάτι άλλο έβγαινε στη µέση και δεν µπορούσαµε. Αλλά βέβαια το µεγαλύτερο εµπόδιο ήταν τα χρήµατα, η µεγάλη απόσταση και η µεγάλη απόφαση µια και τα παιδιά µιλούσαν τώρα την Αγγλική ως πρώτη γλώσσα.

- Πόσες φορές έχεις επισκεφτεί την Ελλάδα από τη µέρα που ήρθες στην Αυστραλία ως µετανάστρια; - Το πρώτο µου ταξίδι στην Ελλάδα κατάφερα να το κάνω µετά από 20 χρόνια, δηλαδή το 1984. Μετά ξαναπήγα το 2002 και τώρα γεράσαµε πια και δεν βλέπω να µπορώ να ξαναπάω στην πατρίδα.

- Μπορείς να περιγράψεις τι ένιωθες όταν έφευγες από την Ελλάδα; Ποιες σκέψεις έκανες; - Και βέβαια µπορώ! Το θυµάµαι σαν να ‘ταν χτες! Ένιωθα λύπη και χαρά µαζί και µεγάλη αγωνία! Λύπη γιατί άφηνα πίσω όχι µόνο την πατρίδα µου, αλλά και τους δικούς µου ανθρώπους, ιδιαίτερα τη µητέρα µου. Θυµάµαι το πονεµένο βλέµµα της µάνας µου, ποτέ πριν δεν µε είχαν κοιτάξει έτσι τα µάτια της. Τα δάκρυά της έτρεχαν συνέχεια και µ’ έκανε και µένα να κλάψω όσο δεν είχα κλάψει ποτέ. ∆εν είχα πατέρα, είχε πεθάνει στον αντάρτικο πόλεµο και την άφηνα ολοµόναχη γιατί µόνο εµάς τα δύο παιδιά είχε στη
