The term Stylus is used to describe a myriad of different devices used in computing, science, medicine, art and technology. In ancient times, a stylus was the bone or ivory pen used to write on wax or clay tablets. Stylus is also the Greek word for pillar, denoting strength and grace. * A copy of the full Strategic Plan is available for download at www.stspyridon.nsw.edu.au

ΑΙΕΝ ΑΡΙΣΤΕΥΕΙΝ THEONI THIMAKIS – HSC CLASS 2015 COLLEGE DUX, ARONEY AWARD WINNER UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT:

Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy) University of Sydney. It is with great honour and privilege that I stand here as recipient of the Professor Aroney award and would like to thank the late Professor Aroney’s family for this honour. I must say how much I have missed coming here every day and the comfort this school provided me. It was like a home away from home for me. Walking through the school gates always brings back many memories.

the world. Relish the time you have the privilege of going to St Spyridon College, for never again will there be a time when there are so many people around you wanting the best for you. From my very first day of kindergarten all the way back in 2003, I have had the honour of being surrounded by such people, with the late Mrs Hamer offering continual encouragement, support and guidance, welcoming all new students to the St Spyridon family.

St Spyridon College has created an environment like no other school. It is small, intimate and everyone is made to feel like part of the family. You don’t know how fortunate you are to attend this great place until your time here has ended.

One of the best parts of my final year at St Spyridon is how supported I felt by my family, friends and teachers. Truth be said, I could not have accomplished this achievement alone. It took the effort of many people to get me here today. I will never forget my family’s love, encouragement and the many sacrifices they have made as they supported me to strive for the very best. For this and their many other acts of love I would like to thank them.

Now that I have moved on from St Spyridon College to university over the past year I can see now how the Christian values and morals the school has instilled in me has shaped my overall behaviour and outlook on life and

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my teachers. Their never-ending faith in my abilities made me only want to do them proud. I will never forget my teacher’s willingness to take time out of their free periods,

Congratulations to the Scholarship Winners.

Mr Giles, for your dedication to your students, all those early morning classes and never hesitating to take time out of your lunch to explain concepts to me. Dr Hickie for marking and remarking my essays throughout the entire year. Mrs Koutsoukis for your dramatic interpretations of texts and for never letting a single English lesson be boring. Mr Croft for actively helping each of your students grasp the more difficult concepts and Mr Kollias, your love for mathematics was infectious and never failed to let us see the beauty of the subject. In particular, however, I would like to acknowledge Ms Kalithrakis, who at times was much more than just a teacher. She was a mentor, a counsellor, a comforter and a friend. Throughout all of year 12 you were my pillar of support, your office door was always open, you were

To the students of Year 12 2017, I wish you all the very best for the year ahead. By no means it is not an easy one, however it is a very fulfilling and satisfying year where some of your best memories will be made. To the current year 12 enjoy the break and I hope all your aspirations come true. Once more I would like to thank everyone in the St Spyridon College community for giving me the opportunity to be the very best I can be. I feel very proud, honoured and grateful to be receiving this award, given the calibre of past recipients, and I hope that I can do you proud in my future endeavours. Thank You.

Past Students - Where are they now? Sam Scoutas - HSC Class 2000 Sam was interviewed by The Australian Business Review in his capacity as Managing Director of Fiber Corp which is a Sydney based independent broadband infrastructure provider. Congratulations Sam, we are proud of you.

Fiber Corp looks to fill NBN gap The tortured politics surrounding the National Broadband Network has opened the doors for a number of independent broadband infrastructure providers to step into the breach. One of these operators, Sydney-based Fiber Corp, is targeting new apartment buildings to bring them superfast broadband before NBN Co comes to their neck of the woods. Backed by veteran food industry businessman Nicholas Moraitis, Fiber Corp is looking to deploy fibre infrastructure that it says can deliver speeds ranging from 200Mbps up to 10Gbps using equipment provided by its technology partner Calix. The Fiber Corp idea started taking shape three years ago and company managing director Sam Scoutas told The Australian the key catalyst was frustration within the business community about getting access to high-quality broadband. “We identified there was a significant gap with infrastructure in the country. Some of our business customers (were) waiting up to six months for fibre installs and were unable to use the best technology,” he said.

One factor that compounded the delay was the less than ideal pace of the NBN rollout. The inception of the project and its role as a wholesale access monopoly disincentivised existing operators to launch new wholesale offers while the slower than expected network rollout left many customers in the metro areas underserviced. “What the government of the day neglected (to say) was that 78 per cent of metro areas in Australia already had fibre infrastructure on the ground. Telstra had the Velocity program, which did exactly what NBN Co is doing but when they signed over the copper, they also signed away the ability to compete with NBN Co,” Mr Scoutas said. “NBN has a fantastic role to play in this country in rural and regional areas that need better connectivity … but the government should allow private operators like us, like Opticomm, to target high-rise greenfields areas in the metros.” With taxpayer exposure to the NBN now up to $50 billion, the complicated financial engineering that keeps the NBN off the budget is underpinned by NBN Co facing as little competition as possible in the wholesale space but Mr Scoutas says the emphasis needs to be on getting customers connected. “I have developers that have built 200 apartment complexes but are waiting for up to six months before the NBN comes and activate services. We are there the day the building is completed with our network ready to go,” he said. “The NBN has done a fantastic job in marketing something that they can’t sell.”

They can handle every aspect of a client’s foreign payment needs, from risk consultation to transaction execution.

stylus Unsurprisingly, pure fibre, which is taken into every premises, is at the heart of the Fiber Corp. The company has secured a deal with US access vendor Calix, which will provide the standards-based GPON and NG-PON2 gear to power its services. “They have given us the entire arsenal of their technology and guaranteed that the products that we are taking into the buildings can achieve speeds hundreds of times faster than what NBN Co can deliver,” Mr Scoutas said.

NBN models. While the glacial rollout speed of the Labor NBN created discontent and demand in the market, the Coalition government’s decision to ditch full fibre has given operators like Fiber Corp a technological advantage. The company hopes to leverage its advantage to carve out a handy niche in the greenfields market with a product squarely aimed at developers. Mr Scoutas says fibre opens up a number of additional opportunities as developers explore the potential of the emergent trends of smart home and building automation, as well as services such as high-quality IP CCTV, intercom and access control.

“This is not pie in the sky stuff; this doesn’t need stars and planets to align.”

The secret, Mr Scoutas says, is the fibre optic backbone to which individual building networks will be overlaid. With no contention “We are an ACMA between the buildings, approved carrier and the fibre network Fiber Corp group general manager Abdul Helou, left, managing director we are not here to can be optimised for Sam Scoutas and chief information officer Joel Clarke. just line up a few speed and function. multi-dwelling buildings,’’ he said. It’s a luxury that NBN Co doesn’t have under its current mixed “We are looking to generate technology improvements for technology mandate and it’s a weakness outfits like Fiber Corp our core customers and that means keeping a close eye on the are seeking to exploit. evolving technology.” In a way, Fiber Corp has benefited from the deficiencies of both

Stepping Out HSC Intensive Studio Practice Constantinos Kollias and Irene Roussis spent five days during July and then the September school holidays at the National Art School in Darlinghurst completing the HSC Intensive Studio Practice course. Constantinos worked on the Printmaking studio focusing on the practice of etching. Quote from Constantinos “The atmosphere was dynamic and encouraging. I learnt new skills that enhanced and harnessed my creativity.” Irene was in the painting studio. Quote from Irene, “At NAS I was given autonomy in what I did. There was no judgment from the staff but they did give a lot of positive energy and feedback. I didn’t feel left out, as we were all new and in the same boat.” Constantinos Kollias, Ms Pringle and Irene Roussis What should be noted is that most necessary to prepare the body of work for the HSC in 2017. schools only had one student accepted Both students were especially proud of the exhibition for family into the program. Life at the Junior School Junior School Steps Out Not even the damp and miserable weather could deter the Year 5 students who performed at the Greek Festival at Parramatta in December. The children performed in Greek, the play written by Ka. Stella “Elia”. In attendance were His Grace, Bishop Iakovos, Fr Dimitri Kokkinos and Dr Stavros Kirimis, Consul General of Greece. The audience were amazed by the many lines the children had to learn and the ease with which they delivered them. We thank Mrs Dimitra Micos and the Hellenic Lyceum

Sydney, for sharing their space with us as the stage that was erected for the performance was unable to be used due to the weather. We are honoured that ka. Stella trusted her beloved script to our students and also directed them to get the best possible performance. We thank ka. Anna and Mrs Bennett who accompanied the students to the event and, the parents who willingly and enthusiastically support the students in all that they do.

Write 4 Fun - Imaginative, Intepretive, Critical and Creative Students Recently, the students were provided with opportunities to showcase their talents through authentic learning platforms outside the classroom. Ms McCarthy and Miss Bletsogiannis coordinated Write4Fun and Oz Kids in Print and along with Mrs Bartlett and the Primary teachers, entered students into both of these. We are proud to announce that we had more than 10 students successfully progress past the initial judging stages in the 2016 schools Write4Fun competition and we have been presented with a Certificate of Excellence. This is an extraordinary result as less than 10% of schools achieved this level of achievement. We look forward to the announcement of

the winners on the 26th of October. We congratulate Anastasia Lambrou from Year 6 who had her literary work published in Oz Kids in Print last month and, who is now eligible for the 2016 Young Australian Writer’s Award. Well done Anastasia! We look forward to reading more or your stories. We thank Ms McCarthy and Mrs Bartlett for encouraging Anastasia and supporting her with her writing.

In September, IPSHA presented a cheque to a representative of JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) for the total monies raised by IPSHA schools that participated in, or donated money towards the IPSHA Fundraiser “Walk Around the World for JDRF”. St Spyridon College, as one of the top four fundraising schools in NSW, were invited to take part in this presentation where IPSHA Federal President, Ms Deb Dalwood, presented a cheque of $137,862.10 to JDRF Australia.

“…We premise our proud fundraising results on the values and principles which are taught at our school. At St Spyridon College, the harmonious development of students into intact, resilient and socially responsible persons, is promoted and nurtured. We value the community as an extension of our Orthodox Church. We have a duty to contribute to the welfare of others, and we work together as a school community to do this. Friendship, compassion and decency are our distinguishing characteristics. We thank everyone involved in this fundraising event. The combined effort, support, encouragement and generosity, are a true reflection of dynamic community spirit known as ‘St Spyridon College’.” Miss T. Bletsogiannis Curriculum Coordinator
