All orders are to be in before Tuesday 3:00pm and can be picked up from either the Senior or Junior School administration office on Thursday only after recess. Uniform shop hours: 8:30am to 10:00am and 2:30pm to 4:00pm Wednesdays only during term.

We also farewelled Maria Dalakiaris, the sister in law of Mrs Dalakiaris and the aunt of John (Year 12) who leaves behind her husband Stathy and their 6 year old daughter.

SCHOOL FEES REMINDER We farewelled Sotiria Vassiliadis, the sister of Mr Vassiliadis who leaves behind her husband Michail Chatziantonakis and their 12 month old daughter.

We remember at this time the strength that faith and prayer brings us.

P&F NEWS Nikki Sigrimis Olga Gouveros Athena Sorras

Welcome to our 2019 Committee! The Parents & Friends Association Annual General Meeting was held this week on Tuesday 19th February in Doran House. It was exciting and promising to see many new parents joining us this year. The forum was well supported and attended by the College and Parish Executive, as it is every year. We thank them for their support.

If there are any parents who would still like to join the P&F Committee, please come to our next meeting Wednesday 27th February 2019, 7pm at Doran House. Additionally, if there are any parents within the School that can assist us in our fundraising efforts throughout the year, for example, with a donation or raffle prize, or know of any willing contacts that could assist, we welcome you to please contact us: pfcommittee_@hotmail.com.

The P&F celebrated our fundraising achievements for the 2018 year. So many wonderful events were held and the P&F generated a grand total net income of $90,000! This would not be possible without the support of our parents. To our contributors and donors, once again, we cannot thank you enough! From this amount, a cheque of $90,000 was presented to Mrs. Stefanou-Haag for our College at the 2018 Leadership & Academic Assembly in December.

Thank you to all parents who have filled in the volunteer form so far that was circulated at the information evenings and to your children. We have included one you can print off in this newsletter; please continue to send them in! A member will follow-up shortly with you!

The Committee looks forward to another successful year of fundraising! We welcome former and new members to the P&F team, their valued input at our meetings and for their efforts at our upcoming events for 2019. The following parents have formed the new P&F 2019 team: Angela Kasmas - President Erenie Bourdaniotis - Vice President Leslie Paparsenos - Secretary Angela Vergotis and Vivian Zorbas - Assistant Secretaries Joanna Coutts - Treasurer Joanne Moros - Assistant treasurer

JUNIOR SCHOOL REPORT It was wonderful to see you all at the Parent and Teacher Evenings. We look forward to working with you to achieve the best learning outcomes for your child.

You can track the progress of the build using the following link Spyridon.netcam.net.au.

INFANTS BUILDING

Co-curricular activities will commence on 5th March and conclude on 3rd September 2019.

CO-CURRICULAR

We are so excited to see the Infant building developing. We thought we might share some images with you.

Co-curricular activities are offered only to students in Years 3 – 6. Please return the form with your registration fee by Monday 25th February 2019. To avoid organisational disruptions, no late applications will be accepted. Please arrive at least 5 minutes prior to the end of the activity to be able to meet your child at dismissal. Students that are not picked up immediately after the activity will be placed in After School Care at the parents’ cost. JUNIOR LIBRARY ASSISTANTS 2019 Congratulations to the following Year 6 girls who have been made Library Assistants for 2019: Eva Drivas Evelina Karedis Coco Vezos Mariah Sartzetakis Vaia Grivas LIVE LIFE WELL @ SCHOOL

We are pleased to inform you that we are continuing with our efforts to improve the health and wellbeing of our children through the Live Life Well @ School initiatives that we began last year. Developments this year… Canteen Changes As fully accredited Canteen we are continually looking for ways to improve what we do and to maintain this accreditation. You may have 8

noticed that the appearance of the online canteen menu for the Junior Campus has changed. This is because we have incorporated the ‘Click & Crunch’ program, which is run by the University of Newcastle in partnership with Flexischools. This program aims to have a positive impact through making the healthier choices the easiest choices by positioning healthier items in prominent locations, using coloured labels to identify healthier choices, prompting the addition of healthy items to your order and providing real-time feedback on the order summary screen. We thank Christina Alexandratos for her work on this and her liaison with the University.

CHOIR

Children in Years 3 – 6 will have the opportunity to audition for the Junior School Choir on Monday 25th and Wednesday 27th February. If successful, they will need to commit to the practices which will be held on Thursday afternoons and be available for the IPSHA Performance at the Town Hall on the 14th of August.

Smoozes have been introduced as a healthier option to ice creams. As more options become available we will introduce them. In order to make learning meaningful and to empower children to make positive changes to their well -being, Mr Volas will be working with Year Six to create healthy Bento boxes that will be incorporated into the canteen menu. We will continually strive to make a difference to your children’s choices, as they do matter to us.

YEARS 1 & 2 DISMISSAL The Year 1 and Year 2 children will need to be collected from their classrooms in the afternoons. In order to avoid congestion on the stairs, I kindly ask that all parents wait outside the basketball courts and the teachers will call you up to collect your child.

SENIOR SCHOOL REPORT MONASTERY VISIT On Tuesday the 12th of February 2019, the Year 11 Cohort of 2019 visited Holy Cross Monastery, Mangrove Mountain where they were warmly greeted by the sisters of the Monastery and their spiritual leader, Abbess Philothei. There, our students were given the opportunity to participate in the supplication service dedicated to the Theotokos (the Mother of God) and to venerate some of the nunnery’s most sacred treasures including wood from the most precious and life-giving Cross of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, as well as the relics of St. Haralambos and St. Barbara. Abbess Philothei spoke to the students about the life, virtues and miracles of St Irene Chrysovalantou, the nunnery’s patron saint, as well as the importance of virtue and faith in the lives of Orthodox Christians. Following a tour of the monastery’s construction site, students were given a traditional kerasma from the sisters of the monastery. All in all, our pilgrimage provided us with an excellent opportunity to enrichen our faith, and to learn more about our relationship with one another and with God. Mr A. PREFECT PROFILE Name: Bill Avdalis Number of years at St Spyridon College: 13 Previous leadership roles: Year 10 Peer Support Leader Subjects I am currently studying: English Standard, Mathematics Advanced, Business Studies, Personal Development and Health, and Ancient History. Hobbies: Participating in sports, fishing, listening to music, being with family and friends. My future aspirations: To study Teaching or Commerce at university. My role models: God, St Spyridon, St Philaret the Merciful, parents and grandparents. Favourite quote: "If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. I you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody else." - Chinese Proverb My proudest moment: Being chosen as College Captain of 2019. One student principle that is most meaningful to me and why: Student Principle 9: “We respond to the difficulties of life with patience, dignity and faith, never fearing to start again.” I have been taught to be patient and never to forget God in my life and that even at our most difficult times God is always there for us, all we have to do is pray to Him for guidance. There will be 'obstacles' in our life than may slow us down or even prevent us from achieving our goals. We may fall, but with prayer and patience, we will always get back up with strength and God’s help and rise again to meet the challenge.

PREFECT PROFILE Name: Stella Ktenas Number of years at St Spyridon: 13 years; since kindergarten. Previous leadership roles: Peer Support Leader in Year 10, SRC in Year 10 and Year 11. Subjects I am currently studying: English Advanced, English Extension 1, Classical Greek, Legal Studies, Modern History, History Extension. Hobbies: Singing, playing piano, musical theatre, reading and debating. My future Aspirations: I wish to study Law at university and eventually practice some form of humanitarian law, in order to give back to my community. My role models: Oprah Winfrey, Maya Angelou, Malala Yousafzai, my parents and teachers. Favourite quote: “Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.” – Albert Einstein My proudest moment: My proudest moment was being elected Vice-Captain of St Spyridon College, as well as delivering the poem “Flanders Fields” on Remembrance Day 2018. One Student principle that is most meaningful to me and why: Student Principle 2: “We contribute to the life of our Church and community, and exercise our responsibilities as citizens in a Democratic nation, always obeying the rule of law”. The reason why I chose this principle is that I believe an essential aspect to our experience as human beings is the ability to give back to our community, church and school. Through giving back we exercise qualities of humility and compassion; all essential aspects to our development into good human beings of Christ. From a very young age my parents encouraged this virtue; informing me about issues of inequalities in the world around us and encouraging methods of assisting, such as charity involvement and donations. Appropriately, this was furthered upon through my school. Through the pastoral care programme as well as the SRC, my eyes have been opened to issues around us in our community. As a result, I have been fortunate through my studies at St Spyridon College to contribute not only to the life of the College, but also to the wider community, including the church. I have been able to engage in various charity programmes and in doing so, I recognise the profound impact it has had on my perception of the world and my goals in life, and I believe it has made me a better human being.

PREFECT PROFILE Name: George Bozikis Number of years at St Spyridon: 1 year (Since the start of Year 11). Previous Leadership Roles: Primary School House Captain, Student Representative 2014, Peer Leader for Edmund Rice Camps 2017. Subjects I am currently studying: English Advanced, English Extension, Ancient History, History Extension, Business Studies, Legal Studies, Economics. Hobbies: Spending time with friends and family, playing sport, volunteering, listening to music. My Future Aspirations: Studying at university and developing into the best person I can be. My Role Models: Our Lord Jesus Christ, St George, St Mark of Ephesus and any person who has constantly tried to be the best they can be. Favourite quotes: “What is impossible with man is possible with God”- Jesus Christ “Don't compare yourself with other people; compare yourself with who you were yesterday.”- Jordan Peterson My Proudest moment: Being chosen as Senior Prefect of St Spyridon College. One Student Principle that is most meaningful to me and why: Student Principle 3: “We work together to achieve a community whose distinguishing characteristics are those of friendship, compassion and decency.” Student Principle 3 has encapsulated my time as St Spyridon. While I have only been at the College for little over a year, I can truly say that I am proud to wear this uniform and I am proud to be a part of this community. This is because St Spyridon offers a level of amiability and common decency that is often lacking in the modern world. The fact that both students and teachers are always looking for each and are willing to lend a hand whenever needed, is not something to be understated. It is these small things that separate St Spyridon from a lot of other schools. Education at St Spyridon is not just about marks and test results, it is about helping the students develop into good, decent people. It is about supporting each other, having each other’s backs and being the best person possible. That is what makes St Spyridon great.

Έτσι, μετά από αυτό το ταξίδι, πιστεύω ότι η Ελλάδα είναι η πιο όμορφη και γραφική χώρα του κόσμου. Την θέα που απολαμβάναμε από το ξενοδοχείο μας στην Αθήνα, στη Θεσσαλονίκη, στην Κέρκυρα και αλλού, δεν νομίζω πως μπορείς να την βρεις πουθενά αλλού στον κόσμο! Πού αλλού μπορείς να τρως πρωινό με θέα την Ιστορία και τον Πολιτισμό 2.500 χρόνων, δηλαδή, με θέα τον Παρθενώνα, τον Λευκό Πύργο ή το Ποντικονήσι;

κα Μ. Φαλέτα

Topic: Write a diary entry reflecting on a recent unforgettable trip you had. Write 200 words in Greek.

This marks the end of the competition for the girl’s touch football team. Unfortunately, despite a strong finish to the season they were unable to qualify for the Semi Finals narrowly missing out in 5th place. I cannot begin to express how incredibly proud I am of each and every one of these girls who had little to no experience with this sport however, thrived at the opportunity to be a part of the first ever St Spyridon Touch football team. Each week they improved their skills and they reached each goal set for their development. Initially this trial season in the ISA was an opportunity for the girls to learn the rules and experience a new sport, then as their skills progressed we were

Georgia Varvaritis Mary Diamond

hopeful we could start scoring some tries with the end goal to win just at least one game. In only their first season these girls managed to score 14 tries and winning 5 games finishing 5th out of 8 schools. They have embraced the challenges placed on them and exceeded all expectations. Most importantly they have enjoyed every moment and it is quite evident that this sense of achievement has instilled them with self-belief and confidence which will benefit them in the future. The girls have already spoken about their ambition to not only qualify for semi-finals next year but to win their division, something I am certain they can achieve. I would like to thank Cassandra Georgiou their coach for her patience and dedication in helping the girls reach their potential and assisting me to developing the new sport into our ISA program.

ISA REPRESENTATIVE NEWS Congratulations to Larisa Arnautovic of Year 8 who was selected to represent the ISA at the NSWCIS OPEN Tennis Trials. Larisa makes history at St Spyridon being the students to ever be selected for representative Tennis. The ISA selects 8 girls to trial and Larisa was the youngest girl selected and placed in rank #3. This sets a great foundation as we look to introduce Tennis into the school ISA winter season.

OUTSIDE SPORTS NEWS Alexia Moufarrege of Year 11 has been participating in both National and State Oztag competitions where she has travelled to Coffs Harbour to compete. Based on her performance at these competitions she was selected to represent the Australian Under 16s girls Oztag team. Alexia will now play against other countries in an International competition held in September on the Central Coast. We congratulate Alexia on such an amazing achievement.

ISA NETBALL

BOYS SPORTS

The ISA Open Netball squad has been selected. Thank you, to all the girls Years 9-12 who attended these trials. Congratulations to the following girls:

GOLF This term the year 9 and year 10 pass classes have embarked on a short course instruction in the sport of golf. The students have already completed two sessions and after practising their drives are now looking at refining their chip shot.

Anthea Condous Adriana Drakoulis Desi Kapodistrias Nicki Kondou Anneta Maroulis Alexia Moufarrege Sonya Paradisis Nicoletta Tsimboukis Georgia Varvaritis Christina Vlahos Victoria Xylas (Shadow) These girls will be a part of our ISA 2019 Opens Netball team and they will also travel to Adelaide in May, for the Greek Orthodox Colleges National Sports Event. In preparation thy have commenced training where they play in a Wednesday night Netball competition at Tempe. Round 1 commenced this Wednesday and conveniently their opponents were our ex student’s team consisting of girls from the graduating year of 2010 through to 2018, whom most now are our coaches here at the college. It was an enjoyable match however, in the end the experience of our older ex-students prevailed.

REPRESENTATIVE BOYS SPORT The boys’ basketball teams and Cricket team have been tremendous in their approach to all games. In the last couple of weeks in basketball the boys have come up against very strong and in form opposition with the Oakhill boys and Chevalier teams taking advantage of having the home court. While the results may not have gone our way in any of the grades there are positive signs that the comradery and passion is still at the forefront of boys sport. Last week all the teams watched the Open boys narrowly lose against Oakhill College. Despite the loss the support was resoundingly overwhelming with cheers and encouragement from the stands from all the students. I commend the student’s passion and relentless drive to offer their support for their peers. This Saturday 23rd February our boys’ basketball teams play in their final game of the season at home against St Gregory’s College. It shapes up to be a big week in sport with the U14 and U15 teams both vying for a place in this year’s semi finals in division 2. It also marks the last game for our year 12 students and everyone is invited

Ms K. O’Shea Girls Sports

to celebrate this milestone for our boys with the game played at the Sports and Performing Arts Centre at 11am.

CRICKET

Our boys Cricket team has had two contrasting weeks of cricket with a resounding win against Chevalier College and then losing convincingly to All Scots College. Sport can be cruel and just when the boys had the chance to secure a semifinal birth with a win in Bathurst the team failed to post a high enough total to challenge the All Scots boys who were both accurate and driven to succeed on their turf pitch.

Mr F. Kaldis Boys Sports

Despite the disappointing result the boys had a great overnight stay at Bathurst. Thank you to both Mr Zafiropoulos and Mr Jenkins for accompanying the boys on the trip and for their support of the team. It has been a breakthrough season for our captain Spiros Zafiropoulos who two weeks ago managed to be the first St Spyridon Cricketer to notch up a 5 wicket hall, this now goes with the three tons he has scored this season. It has been a year to remember and a real captains all round performance. FOOTBALL TRIALS Football trials have begun for all grades other than the U13 with this continuing this coming Thursday 28th February at the school grounds. TENNIS AT ST SPYRIDON The College is buzzing with excitement at the prospect of introducing tennis as a representative pathway for our students. The trials for which have been scheduled for Thursday 28th February at the school courts. Students and/or families wishing to find out more information please speak to Mr Kaldis or Ms O’Shea.
