Address From Head Of College

n this Stylus we celebrate memorable moments and everyday progress in our students’ development. The Foundation Blessing Ceremony of the New Sports and Performing Arts Centre by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos of Australia, in the presence of

distinguished guests including the Attorney General of New South Wales, Mr John Hatzistergos, the Consul-General of Greece, Mr Vasilios Tolios & Mrs Tolios and others was made even brighter with the attendance of present, past and future students. We are at that happy stage in our history when we can bask in the reflected glory of the outstanding academic achievement of past students like Dr Dean Karantonis PhD. At the same time, we joyfully welcome into our College, the children of past students. St Spyridon College is a dynamic place of learning that fosters a winning attitude in our students. This is evident in the sheer diversity of student engagement in academics, sports, performing arts and community action that feature in this edition of the Stylus. A learning culture such as ours is founded on a strong partnership with parents, exemplified here by the work of our highly successful P & F Committee. In Mrs Mary Faletas’ person we highlight that as places of learning, schools can only thrive with the sustained professional and personal dedication of our educators. Together with the Reverend Father Steven Scoutas and the Board of Governors and Parish

’’

Committee, I thank everyone who has contributed to the good progress of our College, during this Semester.

Mrs E. Stefanou-Haag Head of College

Where are they now? Past Students and Present Role Models Dr Dean M Karantonis graduated from St Spyridon College in 1999 as School Captain, School Dux and Winner of the Professor Manuel Aroney Award after commencing at the primary school 13 years prior in Kindergarten. In 2002, he was awarded the ResMed Biomedical Engineering Scholarship as well as the Goldman Sachs Global leaders Award for Leadership Potential. He graduated with the BE (Hons) degree in computer engineering and the MBiomedE degree in biomedical engineering from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, in 2005, receiving the University Medal. He completed his PhD degree in 2009 with the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering at UNSW in collaboration with industry partner Ventracor, with the research focussed on simulation and control of an implantable rotary blood pump - a device used to assist the circulation of blood around the body, aimed to treat sufferers of heart failure. Dean is currently working at NICTA (National Information and Communications Technology Australia) in the Implant Systems project group. This group is in the process of developing novel neurostimulation devices, for the treatment of neurological conditions such as chronic pain, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy and migraine. Dean has authored numerous journal papers and conference proceedings, co-authored a book chapter on physiological measurement, is a co-inventor of several patents, and is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). “I always look back on my time at St Spyridon with great satisfaction. It was exciting to be at a young and growing school, and being able to develop many friendships lasting until today. The progress being made at the school in recent years, particularly the new buildings with enhanced facilities, is encouraging, and it appears the standard of education is going from strength to strength.” Dr Dean M Karantonis St Spyridon College Graduate 1999

Appreciating the beautiful things Ken Done Inspires Creativity On Tuesday 15th September Kindergarten went on their first ever excursion to the city as part of their AUSTRALIA unit Out and About. During term 3, Kindergarten has been learning about Ken Done, Australian landmarks and transport. All this came to life when Kindergarten spent the day visiting the Ken Done Art Gallery, walking around the harbour, observing landmarks such as The Harbour Bridge and Opera House, going on a train ride through The Botanical Gardens and on a river cat to Rose Bay. Kindergarten was very fortunate to see Ken Done’s art studio. Michelle from the Ken Done Art Gallery took Kindergarten into Ken’s studio and they got to see where he paints.

Book Week Awards Our children were given many opportunities during Book Week to experience the joy that books can bring to our lives. On Monday the 24th of August, we were privileged to have the Senior Children’s Librarian from Bowen Library with us. Ms Jane Moffat was invited by Mrs Dimitrelis our English Curriculum Coordinator to share the books chosen for awards. We thank both of them for their commitment to promoting literature with our children. As part of “Book Week – Book Safari” Year 6 and Kindergarten participated in a Book Sharing session on Friday 28th of August. Year 6 read their favourite picture book to their buddies. In return, Kindergarten read books they enjoy reading at school to their Year 6 buddies. It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm while reading quality literature! Congratulations to Maria Bletsas (6P) and Ann-Marie Xenos (6P) who won their age group poetry section in the Bowen Library Book Week Competition.

Congratulations also to Kerryanne Syros (4T), George Raptis (4T) and Demetrios Avdalis (4C) who received honourable mentions for their poetry entries in the Bowen Library Book Week Competition. The students were invited to attend a ceremony on Friday 28th of August. Students received certificates and prizes from Mayor Bruce Notely Smith. We are very proud of the high standard of work that our students submitted. The Attorney General receives the Student Leaders Team Recently we had the privilege to be invited to the office of the Honourable John Hatzistergos, Attorney General of NSW. Mr Hatzistergos was kind enough to sit down alongside his policy advisor Andrew Melas, and talk openly about his journey into the political world, and his hectic lifestyle. The mood of the conversation was extremely relaxed and free, with him offering us some valuable advice about entering the workforce and the importance of keeping an open mind – not to stop ourselves from exploring different opportunities which may arise. We were particularly fascinated by the amazing artworks hanging off the walls of his office,

which, he explained were all created by rehabilitated prisoners. This was particularly significant for us as Legal Studies students, having spent a great deal this year recognizing the importance of rehabilitating criminals in our criminal justice system and then providing them with the necessary skills to allow them to be reintegrated into society. Overall, it was a very humbling and special experience. Thank you to Mrs Stefanou for giving us this memorable opportunity and accompanying us on the day. Christopher Stasos, Kosta Pappas and Tina Piperides Year 12

Year 10 Experience World of Work. The College would like to thank all businesses that acted as host organizations for the Year 10 work experience period. Below, I have included some of the comments that were made by their supervisors. I think that they exceeded even our high expectations of them. ‘Seems to like engineering- going like a rocket’, ‘A genuine, bright and articulate student who showed initiative and responded well with all she interacted with. A pleasure to have with us.’ ‘All staff members found her a responsible cooperative young woman. She was delight to have in the office.’

‘She did an outstanding job whilst doing work experience in the media department at the Rabbitohs. She had the opportunity to write numerous articles for our game day newspaper and website as well as conduct research for an event taking place in 2010. She interviewed a high profile player and other identities at the club. She was punctual, polite, hard-working, diligent and a pleasure to work with. Well done!’ ‘His attitude to his work experience has been outstanding. He has been a valuable asset to our whole staff at the school. He has approached the students with a responsible, positive attitude.’ ‘She has demonstrated a high degree of professionalism and commitment in the varying roles she takes on.’

‘He was an exceptional work experience candidate. He undertook all tasks with maturity and responsibility.’

Well done to all our students!

‘He was a great asset to our accounting company.’

27 students of Year 3 and all 40 students of Year 4 sat for the International Competitions and Assessment for Schools in Mathematics. 17 Distinctions and 20 Credits were awarded.

On the 6th August 2009 all students in Years Five and Six sat for the Australian Mathematics Competition. The questions in this competition use mathematics from within the school syllabus, and the questions within each set, range from broadly accessible to challenging, requiring problem solving skills. The problems get progressively more difficult until the end, when they are challenging to the most gifted student. We are proud to announce very pleasing results from our students. Below are some of the students who need especial mention.

The Australian Mathematics Competition for the Westpac Awards 2009 Sponsored by the Westpac Banking Corporation, the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC), is the original and largest of its kind in the world and is in now in its 32nd year. Held this year on 6 August, the AMC is renowned for its high standard and integrity and has three aims: STYLUS Page 12

• To highlight the importance of mathematics as a curriculum subject • To give students an opportunity to discover talent in mathematics • To provide resources for the classroom & general discussion

The AMC is in some ways a complement to the national numeracy assessment (NAPLAN) held in May. St Spyridon College-Senior School entered all of Year 7 and selected students from Years 8-11 in this year’s AMC. We received 1 Distinction, 32 Credits and 36 awards of Proficiency. The introduction of a Proficiency certificate awarded to all students who have achieved a pre-set score but have not been awarded a Credit (or higher) certificate, was an innovation for students entering the 2008 AMC. All students were asked to solve thirty problems, twenty five of which were multiple-choice, in 75 minutes. Community Action Biggest Morning Tea/Breakfast

Wednesday 27th May 2009 Special thanks to Ms Tsokas and Mrs Marinos for organising a wonderful fund raising day for the Cancer Council. Our students as always came forward and gave for others. Thank you students, staff and parents for again showing your care for those less fortunate. Thank you also to Ms Tsokas for putting on a lovely morning tea for the staff. Thank you to the following people for kindly donating items towards our Morning Breakfast. Your generosity is greatly appreciated: Eastgardens Fruit Centre Mr Sal Saleh for donating the apples. K & C Graham Enterprises Pty Ltd / National Foods Australia Pty Ltd and David Gierke for donating the milk.

Jeans For Genes Day On Friday 7th August, St Spyridon College participated in Genes for Jeans Day. The students who brought in a gold coin for donation were allowed to wear their jeans on that day. All the money we raised went to scientists and doctors to research the genes inside our bodies and to find a cure for illness and diseases in children. On Genes for Jeans Day, Year 6 sold beautiful pens, badges and baby pins. Thanks to the generosity of the entire school, we raised $1,630. Everyone from Kindergarten through to Year 6 had an absolutely fantastic and enjoyable day. We believe that even a few of the teachers had a fantastic and fun day wearing their jeans. Finally we would like to congratulate the entire school for joining in and all playing a major role in this fund raiser. We are pleased to announce that $1,925 was raised for the Children’s Medical Research Institute!!! Year 6 Students

Soup Kitchen Duty

O

n the day of ‘The Exaltation of the Life Giving Cross’, a strict fast was observed not only at school where the canteen did not serve any meat and milk products, but also at the Soup Kitchen. Instead of the usual meat/fish dish accompanied with rice, pasta, or potatoes, black eyed beans were served. While this type of food was not what many were used to, they still gratefully accepted, and some even asked for seconds, which surprised our Year 9 helpers! Well done to George Janjetovic and Michael Horafios as well as Targreed Asaad and Sarah Hatzon for doing their best for this important service.

Soup Kitchen Yianni Vlahopoulos and Ben Sealy completed their Community Service duty at the Soup Kitchen at Newtown. Once again Father Nectarios expressed his joy to see the boys’ enthusiasm in carrying out their duties. Ms Gina Kokinelis Dean of Middle School
