Save the Dates January 5-29, 2017 Brian O’Malley Faculty Art Exhibit January 28, 2017

Dear Friends, Amy and I, and our two sons, Declan and Cole, would like to express our deep gratitude for the warm welcome we received during my first year as seventh Headmaster. I want to highlight what has become clear to both Amy and myself, which is that the family at St. Andrew’s is a rare and extraordinary group of people committed to students in a way that inspires all those around us. We are truly blessed by the love of our faculty, volunteers, and the many caring people that support us with their time, talent and treasure Witnessing the transformative outcomes of our students, it is their combined dedication, optimism, and faith in our mission that is underscored for me time and again. Our accomplishments for this first year were numerous including enhancements in our residential life curriculum, the formation of new student clubs, and additional academic offerings. A new marketing plan has broadened our outreach to families, both domestic and international, who seek our unique programs. Faculty, administrators, and trustees worked diligently on a strategic planning process, which will outline a vision for St. Andrew’s by honoring our legacy and carrying it forward in a way that allows for and inspires innovation, a vision that focuses deeply on our students, our curriculum and the programs we design to support them. The future of St. Andrew’s captured in this plan will recommit us to Father Chapin’s founding legacy, a legacy defined by generosity of spirit and a commitment to service, action, and inclusion. We have much to celebrate here at St. Andrew’s, all made possible by the kind generosity of people like you in our community. I invite you to visit campus often. Here, you will witness the true impact of the collective support from our community. Warm regards,

David J. Tinagero Headmaster

Bon Voyage,

My St. Andrew’s Farewell

Written by Isidora Tasic ‘17, an exchange student from Serbia

My character was formed — carved by pride, hard-work, diversity, and kindness.

I am sitting under the tree on my favorite place on campus at St. Andrew’s school. If you were there you could see, hear and feel everything, it is so beautiful in the spring. In the distance a soccer field where I spent many hours practicing and laughing with my friends. In front of me the street “Federal Road” and students walking with their hands loaded with food supplies, ready for the next week. You could even hear the music from the practice room and students acting on the stage. That is right; I could hear them telling a story. I have one story to tell as well. It all began on September 8 when I shyly entered the common room of the “Margot’s girl dorm.” In that moment I would not have been able to imagine that the name “M Squad” would be etched to my heart through the year. I met three young ladies that will be my dorm moms. They gave me the key card “Room Number ID.” I put my St. Andrew’s card in the small red box and proudly attached it to my pants. That is when my American journey began. I am sitting under the tree on my favorite place on campus and again, I think. Oh, there are so many things that I have experienced in this school; so many memories I will bring to my home. I turned my head to the left while still sitting under that three and I look at the Stone Room. I remember my first tour of the campus when I entered each one of those rooms. They were empty then, and now in my mind I remember how they will never be empty for me again. It is so strange that sometimes those empty places become the ones filled with students, stories, laugh and important discussions. In those rooms I learned so much, I argued current events, and I met the teachers that became my friends. As I walk through those hallways, I saw the bulletin board and all papers that were attached on it. The high honors list and the name I familiarize myself with, the school musical and my guitar, “The Outsiders” and me wrangling the kids, the first Drama Club and the roles of “Whitney” and “Waitress” I have mastered. On the other side of the board there was a picture of two people, both from the country I was born in, with diploma in their hands for the “Best Delegate at the MUN Conference”. I saw the Spring Concert flyer and the first student-run event at St. Andrew’s. I also saw the Gala night, the prom night, writings for the “US” magazine, pictures from the soccer matches, pictures from the Broadway plays, pictures from New York, Boston, Newport Mansions, host families. I remember more… I carefully stood up and walked towards the dinning hall. I entered and I saw the best cook--my friend Ryan, who always introduced me to each meal. The dining hall was full of people that day, full of talking. I talked to my English teacher first, oh what a discussion about nature and convenience. I stepped forward and looked at the smiling face of a teacher that was a part of almost every project I started. I moved forward and greet each one of them; and I got questions: How are you? How’s your day been? What do you think about this, what do you think about that? What is your opinion?----Well, at this school I learned to create one of my own. Full of confidence, I left the dining hall with all the suitcases I had. In them, I decided to keep all those memories, stories and adventures. I would bring with me all advice I got from my teachers and plans for the future. As I stood there waiting for the car to pick me up, I felt different. I felt that a change was made. I was not scared anymore of what will the future bring; I was not scared of what other people think about me. I was not scared of trying new things and talking to different people. My character was formed---carved by pride, hard-work, diversity, and kindness. In the distance I saw many new students bringing their suitcases and entering the same dining hall for the first time. I was confident that each one of them would have a journey at St. Andrew’s filled with love, learning, laughing, where they will have an opportunity to form their characters and get ready for the bright future ahead. I am sitting under the tree, again thinking. I realize that St. Andrew’s became my other home. I am standing up, looking at the campus. I capture the view in my mind... and smile.

Artisit-in-Residence

Maxwell Van Pelt Through the generous support of the Happy White Endowment for the Arts, visiting artists spend up to two weeks each year working with students in different visual art media. Mrs. Happy White was a long-time Trustee and supporter of St. Andrew’s who helped start the visual art program. The Artist-in-Residence program exposes our students to a working artist who in turn teaches them about technique while working with them to produce a work of art.

The 2015-2016 Artist-in-Residence was Maxwell Van Pelt (b. 1989, Boulder, Colorado), a painter, sculptor, and installation artist based in Providence, RI. Max graduated Summa Cum Laude from Dartmouth College in 2011, where he studied Studio Art with a concentration in Architecture. His Honors Thesis – in sculpture and drawing – was awarded the Jonathan B. Rintels Prize for the outstanding undergraduate thesis in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Shortly afterwards he spent a post-graduate year as an Intern and Special Instructor for the Department of Studio Art at Dartmouth. His work has been featured in Big Red & Shiny, on NPR, and by Art in America’s. Max worked with our students for two weeks, helping them to learn to focus on the process rather than the end product. Students also spent time stepping back from their work to discuss the elements and ideas behind their compositions. Max taught students about working together to make collaborative art. Students in the 3D Design class came together to create an installation in the Rooke Library while students in the 2D Design class worked together on large scale multimedia pieces. After two weeks of intense work, the students’ work was placed in the Griffiths Gallery in the McCulloch Center for the Arts.
