OFFICE INFORMATION
As the busy summer ends, we want you to know the Parks and Recreation team and I are privileged to oversee the vital spaces that breathe life into our communities – our parks and recreational facilities. These areas play an integral role in fostering physical and mental well-being, promoting social interaction, and creating a strong sense of identity within our neighborhoods.
Throughout this edition of PLAY, you will find many opportunities for you and your family this fall and winter with several sneak peeks for next summer. Whether you are looking for a planned activity, specialty programming, exploring the various trails or looking for some of the recent facility updates, there is something for everyone. Parks and recreation are not merely amenities; they are the lifeblood of our community.
We are honored to lead efforts that contribute to the overall well-being of our residents. By focusing on enhancing green spaces, promoting active lifestyles, fostering social bonds, and enhancing accessibility we are building a stronger, healthier and more connected community. Let us all work together to ensure that these invaluable resources continue to thrive and serve generations to come.
After all, we are an Extension of Your Own Backyard!

PARK HIGHLIGHTS
As we reflect back on the fun we had this summer, we want to focus on some highlights that are sure to continue to be community favorites into the fall and far beyond.
One of the biggest hits this summer were the pickleball opportunities created across the park system. Last year new surfacing, lines and roll-out pickleball nets were placed at McNair and Blanchette Park tennis courts to make room for more pickleball play. This year, the same was done at Wapelhorst Park where lines for both tennis and pickleball courts and roll-out nets were added after resurfacing. In addition, the single tennis court at Boone’s Lick Park was completely renovated into 4 new pickleball-only courts and an additional access path added. With the popularity of the sport growing so quickly and in so many age groups, these courts will help meet the community need.
Also this summer there was an additional extension to our trails and Greenways system in St. Charles. The newest Great Rivers Greenway backed extension of the Centennial Greenway was opened. A grand opening was held on Wednesday, May 24th. The new extension added 1.8 miles of trail to the Centennial Greenway and now connects the Katy Trail all the way to the Spencer Creek Trail, for a total of 18.7 miles connecting parts of St. Charles County. This steadily used trail will undoubtedly continue to serve residents of the community for years to come.
The summer also brought some challenges. One unexpected challenge came in the form of a bank and trail collapse along the edges of Kluesner Lake, located just north of Highway 370 in Fountain Lakes Park. Two separate erosion issues occurred on opposite sides of the lake, making trail passing difficult in spots. With help from contractors we were able to re-stabilize and reinforce the edges to re-establish the trails that were impacted.
As we look forward to next year, more fun is planned as we work toward updating the playground at Schaefer Park. We will also be adding on an additional restroom to the George F. Gould Building in Wapelhorst Park, giving building renters private restroom access while providing regular park goers access to public restrooms. More to come on those projects and other in 2024!
DID YOU KNOW?
Pickleball is a hybrid of tennis, badminton and ping-pong and is the fastest-growing sport in America, having more than 4.8 million participants nationwide in 2022, and a growth of 39.3% over the last two years (according to 2022 Sports, Fitness and Leisure Activities Topline Participation Report).
Join the fun! See our pickleball leagues on page 19!

Lenny Sylcox
Ranger Sergeant
Welcome to Lenny Sylcox, one of our newest additions to the St. Charles Parks Ranger Division. He joined our team in February 2023 as Ranger Sergeant. He has experience working for the Moline Acres Police Department and the Overland Police Department. As a Ranger Sergeant he spends his time patrolling our parks, working festivals, helping with events like Safety Town and COPS Camp, and in his words “keeping people happy”. Lenny likes working with the Ranger Division as they have a community-oriented approach that parallels some of his work with the Overland Police Department. In his free time he enjoys playing golf and riding his motorcycle. He also enjoys spending time with his wife, 3 kids and his Chihuahua, Roxy.
Jason Johns
Maintenance 1
A warm welcome to Jason Johns who joined the Maintenance Division in early 2023 as a full-time Maintenance I staff member. Jason comes to the team with prior experience in property management and maintenance as well as sales. Jason has been a key piece to the maintenance team as he entered a new role by attending to facility rentals, emergency maintenance repairs and coordinating the part-time maintenance team on the weekends. Jason enjoys working close to his home in Frenchtown. The pride he takes working in and helping his own community is evident through the hard work he displays each day.
Hailey Hoffman
Administrative Associate
Hailey Hoffman joined the Administration Department in February 2023 as a part time Administrative Associate. Hailey grew up in Illinois where she played softball, danced and took art and acting classes through the Naperville Park District. She moved to Missouri and continued to play Softball at her local parks department. Her family has always had roots in parks and recreation with her dad coaching her and her brother's teams. She spent the last four years working for City of Wentzville at the front desk, and with youth and camp programming. We are pleased to bring her skills and passion to St.Charles. Hailey also attends St.Charles Community College where she studies psychology and criminal justice with a goal to be a high school counselor in the future.
Steve Eisenbath
Part Time Ranger
Help us welcome Steve Eisenbath, to the St.Charles Parks Department Ranger Division. Steve joined the team this July. After 29 years with City of St. Charles Police Department and two years of retirement, Steve was ready for something new and to continue to contribute to his community. TRAILS AND GREENWAYS
Triplets Peyton, Taylor, and Alyssa Birkinmeyer began working for The St. Charles Parks & Recreation Department in 2022, as Concessions workers at Wapelhorst and Blanchette Aquatic Facilities. They chose to apply after hearing about the job from friends. You can often find the sisters working the same shifts because in their words "We all love working together, there's never a dull moment. We always keep each other entertained." The triplets love many things about working at the pools like the flexible scheduling, the staff, and interacting with kids. When asked if they could describe working for the pools in one word, Peyton said "fun", Taylor said "chill", and Alyssa used "Blantastic!"

Hub and Field House Feasibility Study
In 2019, the City of St. Charles purchased 97 acres of property located off Highway 94 and Highway B for a new park. This property is adjacent to the 96.9 acres purchased by Orchard Farm School District. In 2021, a master plan was completed which identified the concept for the overall park. This new park will be a catalyst for economic development as well as a central amenity for future city growth. The next step is to further define what amenities and features will be included within the park’s central Hub and Field House.
The vision for this Activity Hub and Field House is to provide unique amenities for St. Charles residents as well as become a potential destination for sports tourism. The programming and design of this area will be driven by community input and feedback. A community driven planning process will help to ensure that the new park, Hub and Field House will provide new desired amenities while still complementing the existing park system.
Through this study, the City and the city’s design team will gather input from the community through public meetings, open houses, focus group meetings and an online survey allowing community members to engage and provide feedback. This effort will evaluate the feasibility and business model for the Activity Hub & Field House. The size, scope, aesthetics, and cost of each are to be determined to align with the goals established by local residents and the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department.
