If you have ventured into Frontier Park recently, you may have noticed 4 new bronze busts to the Lewis and Clark Plaza. Thanks to local resident and artist Bill Schnarre and the Parks and Recreation Foundation, the four bust additions of members of the expedition were made poassible. Bill and Sharan donated two of the busts and brick pavers sales through the Foundation completed the improvements. Take a stroll and find out more about John Colter, Pierre Cruzatte, James MacKay and Francis Labiche.

Enjoy the winter activities and we’ll see you in the Parks, an Extension of Your Own Backyard!

PARK HIGHLIGHTS

Happy Fall Everyone! Fall is a favorite for the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department as it is one of the most active times of the year. We have everything from fun runs and 5K’s to sports leagues, festivals, and programming. There is always something going on in the parks this time of year. This fall, we want to highlight a few of the ways we work to keep our parks active and useful for so many in our community.

One of the most popular rental buildings in our parks, the George F. Gould Building in Wapelhorst Park, recently received an update to help support more renters and park visitors. In the past, the building was equipped with just one set of public restrooms that were shared between building renters and the general public. In the summer of 2024, the building was expanded and 3 new single-use bathrooms were added for public park users. Now building renters have private access to the interior restrooms and general park users have three new restrooms. This is a win for everyone!

Improvements made to Jaycee Stage in Frontier Park highlight some of the entertainment and festival events that our parks support each season. In 2024, the Jaycee Stage underwent upgrades in concert with (pun-intended) some adjacent stormwater updates. The stage now has new concrete steps, an updated performer’s access ramp, and a coat of fresh paint. All of this helps support the entertainment for a number of events and performances each year, most notably our 4th of July Riverfest Celebration, The Festival of the

Another one of our favorite ways to help visitors enjoy the parks in fall is with our fall plantings and garden displays. Each year our team of horticulturalists and grounds crews work to design, plant, and maintain a wide variety of plants and trees to help keep the parks looking attractive through each season. Whether we are planting trees in the spring or fall, annual plants in May, or switching out to winter displays in late autumn, our staff and volunteers take pride in finding ways to make our parks look good and perform well for park users and the greater community. We often hear from visitors how much they enjoy a design or display in a flowerbed, the fall colors on tree leaves, or the sound of still attached seed heads on prairie grass blowing in the winter wind. Thanks for enjoying it all and keep coming back to all your favorite events in our parks.

Little Hills, and Oktoberfest events. We love celebrating with you in the parks!

TIPS FOR A HEALTHY HOLIDAY SEASON

• Focus on family and friends, not just the buffet.

• When going to a party or family gathering, offer to bring a healthy dish.

• Lighten up recipes whenever possible by using less sugar, salt, or fat, you won’t notice the difference.

• Eat from all food groups, choosing whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

• Practice portion control by using smaller plates and not going back for seconds.

• Slowly savor the meal, put your fork down between bites and taste each mouthful of food.

• Don’t skip the exercise! Walk the mall with a friend, have a snowball fight with the kids, get up and stretch if you have been sitting for too long, and dance to your favorite tune.

• Most of all, have a healthy happy Holiday season by finding balance in all you do.

PARK CONNECTIONS - OAK GROVE CEMETERY

One of our favorite things about our department is the numerous ways we are able to make connections with every different kind of individual and group within the community be it through physical activity, social interactions, cultural connections, or historical bonds. One of the best examples of historical connections within the community is in Oak Grove Cemetery. Did you know the Parks and Recreation Department operates the city-owned Oak Grove Cemetery and the 28 acres of burial plots? That’s right, and while cemeteries are often a somber place, cemeteries are also a gathering place with strong connections for families in the community and strong ties to history. In order to highlight those ties, the Parks and Recreation Department has developed ways to connect with

the community including programming, volunteer opportunities, and historical research.

At Oak Grove Cemetery there is over 200 years of history just in burial details and on grave markers. In fact, the city has partnered with history students at local Lindenwood University in order to document some historical information electronically for the community to share with future generations. Some of that research is also used in programming at the Cemetery, specifically in a partnership program with the St. Charles County Historical Society. The Historical Society provides walking tour opportunities in Oak Grove Cemetery where a number of famous and important families, individuals, and monuments are highlighted and discussed. You can learn about these tours and more at www.scchs.org

NEW EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

WELCOME TO THE TEAM! Josh Krohn - Park Maintenance III - HVAC

Josh Krohn joined the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department in February of 2024 in the role of Park Maintenance III – HVAC. In this role, Josh oversees the maintenance and operations of nearly 90 different heating and cooling units, dozens of freezers, refrigerators, and coolers, and almost any other facility repairs we come across in our park shelters, concessions, and rental buildings. Josh brings a wealth of experience, previously working with CBRE, a commercial real estate entity, where he managed the maintenance and operations of 30 Regions Bank branch buildings in the surrounding area. Josh, his wife, and his children are some of the newest members of our extended Parks and Recreation and City of St. Charles work family, so we encourage you to welcome him and say “Hi!” if you see him in the parks.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM!

Julia Cordes

Administrative Assistant

Julia Cordes joined the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department in July 2024 as a full-time Administrative Assistant. Julia is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Business Administration at Maryville University and is planning to graduate in December 2024. She has versatile work experience, waitressing at restaurants and working for her dad at MidNite Auto Supply. Julia has always been passionate about the outdoors. She enjoys traveling to nearby local, state, and national parks, but her favorite memory of the St. Charles Parks is walking to McNair with her grandfather to enjoy a day at the park. Working in the administrative office, she can combine her passion for interacting with people and her love for the beautiful outdoors.

Additionally, the Parks and Recreation Department has benefited by leveraging the help of community members through volunteer and community service programs. For example, in partnership with the St. Charles County Library, over 20 volunteers spend the 3rd Saturday of each month in Oak Grove Cemetery to help clean and refurbish old grave markers and monuments. These work days provide volunteers with an inside look at the care of our Cemetery, chances to learn some history, and an outdoor space for socializing while helping improve the look and feel of the cemetery for families and visitors. We are proud of the history preserved at Oak Grove Cemetery and the continued service it provides to the community.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM!

Connie Aubin

Administrative Assistant

Connie Aubin joined the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department in July 2024 as a part-time Administrative Assistant. Connie is new to the St. Charles area coming from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, where she worked at Children’s Mercy as an Administrative Assistant and also worked part-time at the Lee’s Summit Parks and Recreation Department. She brings to the department years of customer service experience and loves to help people! Connie has 13 grandchildren and loves exploring the parks in St. Charles. She can be found on her days off enjoying the pools with her family.

On May 18 2003, the Lewis and Clark monument in Frontier Park was dedicated to commemorate St. Charles’ unique ties to the Lewis and Clark Expedition. To celebrate the statue turning 20 years olds in 2023, the St. Charles Parks & Recreation Department in partnership with the St. Charles Parks & Recreation Foundation recently completed a project at the Lewis & Clark Statue.

This project honors four other members of the expedition. The first phase of this project includes the Busts of John Colter and Pierre Cruzatte and the second phase includes the busts of James Mackay and Francis Labiche. These busts are placed on stone wrapped pedestals around the red engraved paver pathway at the statue. The bronze busts were created by local artist Bill Schnarre and were donated to the City by Bill & Sharan Schnarre.

The Foundation also hosts special events that offer another way for you to show your support or contribute to their mission. Each year they hold the Turkey Bowl event in November.
