OFFICE INFORMATION

Good Morning, Good Afternoon, and Good Evening!

Just like that, 2022 is drawing to a close and we’re headed into a new year. If you’re like me, the year went really fast! Although it went by in a blink, many good things came from 2022. Improvements were made to athletic fields and tennis/pickleball courts; Kister Park, Fox Hill Park and the Rose Garden in Blanchette Park were adopted by volunteer groups; Wapelhorst Aquatic Facility Pool Party Plaza expansion; a cricket field addition to the Soc cer Complex, and many successful events and programs — just to name a few things.

2022 also brought its share of challenges for Department Staff. That all too common sign seen everywhere, “Now Hiring.” On-boarding the appropriate number of Staff to fully operate is a challenge. Day camp, main tenance, aquatics and concessions all faced difficulties. Listening to current staff and researching, we’re making some changes for better recruitment which will be released in the coming months as we prepare for 2023. Watch for our Job Fairs or apply online.

Our aquatic facilities also faced difficulties with large crowds causing unwanted disturbance and disruption from the enjoyable family spaces we have created. New attendance policies are being formed and launched for the 2023 aquatics season. Our facilities were created for our resident’s enjoyment and we are focusing on those efforts for 2023 and beyond. More to come on these policies once they are finalized.

Staff is ready for 2023 and excited to share all our offerings and improvements. Have suggestions how we can improve or a program we could add? Drop us a line and tell us more. We love to hear what you think. Afterall, we are “An extension of your own backyard!”

PARK HIGHLIGHTS

2022 was another amazing year in the parks with tons of sports, events, programs, fun and relaxation had by many. As we look forward to having even more fun in parks in 2023, we wanted to revisit some projects and happenings from 2022 and what is yet to come this year!

While the summer brought outdoor fun and festivals, it also brought a record rainfall event which affected several parks. Due to the estimated 9 to 11 inches of rainfall on July 26th, major damages were sustained in Boone’s Lick, Frontier, Fountain Lakes, Kiwanis, and McNair Parks. These damages include a large sinkhole and the loss of a pedestrian bridge in Fron tier Park, the loss of a pe destrian low-water cross ing path in Fountain Lakes and damage to ball fields and fencing at Kiwanis and McNair Parks. The Depart ment is working with City leadership and FEMA to assess, plan and begin to repair these issues, and we look forward to the restorations coming in 2023.

While ballfields at McNair and Kiwanis Parks were impacted by the flooding, fields at both parks have been restored and made playable again. The Depart ment also used the end of 2022 to take advantage of the short down-time we have in the Wapelhorst Park ball field schedule to make additional updates on those playing surfaces. Over time, the infield material on those diamonds can slowly migrate and eventu ally extend the infield further out into the outfield. In

order to bring the outfield back in a little and to reestablish the infield edge, sod was placed and addi tional infield material was graded in order to improve the infield/outfield transition.

As you visit the parks in 2023, you might notice some new signs. In 2022, we continued updating the park entrance and wayfinding signs, including new signage at Fountain Lakes and Jaycee Parks, as well as at the St. Charles Soccer Complex. This new signage aligns with the rest our parks and helps visitors better locate each park and the most important park info, so every one can find it easier to get into the parks in 2023.

Also for this year, we are excited to showcase our updated tennis and pickle ball courts. At the end of 2022, the courts at Blanchette and McNair Parks were resurfaced and repainted for both tennis and pickle ball courts and self-serve pickleball nets were added. Moving forward the Department will be doing the same updates to the courts at Wapelhorst Park and there are plans to change the tennis court at Boone’s Lick Park into four dedicated pickleball courts. We can’t wait to see you all out on the courts in 2023!

Finally, we are also looking forward to upcoming im provements at Kister Park. Kister Park and its Gazebo are a popular spot for people out enjoying Main Street. In 2023 we are updating the brick staircase and walkway up to the gazebo to help prevent bricks from coming loose. The new design will also have additional hand rails for accessibility up and down the stairs. Come see what else we have going on this year and enjoy all the parks.
