Choir Performs at Radio City Music Hall
St. Martin’s choir gave an amazing performance as the opening act of the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall in New York City over the 2023 Thanksgiving break. Prior to the performance the group spent several days exploring the sights and sounds of NYC. St. Martin’s extends its gratitude to directors Christina Comer ’91 and Lynne Bordelon for all their hard work and dedication to our students.
Before the big performance, the choir spent the fall gearing up with a number of other performances, including singing the National Anthem at the Homecoming football game and performing at the head of school installation. Congratulations to this talented group of Saints!

— WHITNEY SAMUEL DRENNAN ’94 Head of School
Dear St. Martin’s Community,
As I reflect on my first year as Head of School, I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for our school and community. Parents, students, alumni, faculty and staff, volunteers, and the Board of Trustees have all welcomed me back to my alma mater with open arms and it’s exciting to see the progress we’re making together.
The next school year promises to be just as exciting, as we embark upon our ISAS/SAES re-accreditation visits and finalization of our self-study. Additionally, renovations on the Cottage 3 rooms will begin soon. These classrooms will reemerge with a beautiful new design, and we will be enhancing the Cottage play yard outside those classrooms. We anticipate construction beginning this fall and having the rooms ready for the 2025-26 school year.
Our dedicated parent volunteers have been hard at work! Funds raised through the Gala have helped provide beautiful upgrades to both the Lower School Library and the Martin Family Library. Thanks to the Booster Club, we’re looking forward to seeing two new scoreboards on campus as a result of their tireless efforts – one scoreboard at Tony Porter Field and another at the softball field.
While I’m excited about these updates, we know St. Martin’s is so much more than our campus and buildings.
First and foremost, we’re a community that celebrates our Episcopal tradition We’re proud to be the only Episcopal school in the New Orleans area that serves students 8 weeks old through 12th grade. Our commitment to guiding and shaping children through the development of strong moral and ethical values, compassion, and empathy in every student sets us apart.
Our emphasis on student-centered interdisciplinary learning anchored in relevant connections to the real world makes us a place of academic excellence. The result is that our graduates are critical thinkers prepared not only for college, but leading lives of purpose and meaning.
We inspire curiosity in our students, the first step to developing a love of learning. We believe in teaching students how to learn and how to think, not what to think. When they know how to think, they’re not just prepared for today’s test or tomorrow’s academic year, but prepared to grow as citizens who contribute to their broader community.
Our supportive and diverse community allows us to truly know and value each and every student. We are a welcoming, tight-knit community, and we care deeply about the people our students will become. Our faculty and counselors provide the safety and support that allow our students to stretch themselves and become who they are meant to be.
Finally, my favorite thing about a St. Martin’s education continues to be our campus of opportunity and the numerous possibilities for our students to thrive in so many ways. Students have access to the opportunities, tools, and support they need to uncover new interests and develop a variety of skills. With guidance from expert faculty, coaches, and mentors, students experience a wide range of resources that allow their curiosity and potential to be nurtured and realized.
I feel so fortunate to serve our community and my alma mater as Head of School. I am honored and proud to help St. Martin’s live its mission of Faith, Scholarship, and Service on a daily basis.
Sincerely,
Whitney Samuel Drennan ’94 Head of School

Students Explore Dance Through New Course
On the expansive stage of the Solomon Theater, several Upper School students work together to choreograph a dance, each suggesting an 8-count dance move. Son of a Saint Founder Bivian Lee Speaks at Upper School Black History Month Assembly
St. Martin’s was pleased to welcome Son of a Saint Founder + CEO Bivian “Sonny” Lee III to a Black History Month Assembly hosted by the Black Student Union. Middle and Upper School students learned about key figures in Black History, listened to a conversation with junior Kaden Forges and Mr. Lee, participated in a Black History Month quiz game, and joined together in prayer and song led by Administrative Assistant to Development Mary Brown and Choral Director Christina Comer ’91. The Black Student Union is sponsored by Esther Frempong and Destini Manuel.
was offered to Upper School students for the first time in the 2023-24 school year.
Theatre Director Lynne Bordelon, who teaches the class, says the course is a great way for students to emphasize creative expression and collaborate with their peers. Meanwhile, students report that the class is giving them a new perspective on the technique, skill, and physicality of dance, as well as introducing them to fellow Saints they hadn’t met before.
The course explores the fundamentals of dance through four major genres: ballet, tap, jazz, and musical theatre. As students rotate through the genres, they study the dance style, history, and techniques. Through a combination of inclass instruction and rehearsal, students gain an understanding of how to execute basic movements, develop their coordination, and improve their physical fitness.
“I’ve been surprised by how intense dance is,” Oli Lyons ’25 said. “This class has opened my eyes to how much skill and technique – and practice – is
required to get it right.”
Whether they’re looking to hone existing skills or learn something new, it seems all of the students involved have gained a lot from the class.
“I have always wanted to explore tap dance, so I knew if it was offered, I would absolutely take it,” said Charles Patrick ’24
A lifelong dancer and choreographer, Bordelon teaches Middle School and Upper School theatre classes, along with the high school dance class. Bordelon is no stranger to dance and theatre, having served as the Director of Youth Programs for Jefferson Performing Arts Society for 20 years and choreographed the Ambie Award-winning CATS. In 2011, she was one of six educators nationwide awarded the Freddie G Teaching Award. In 2018, Young Performers of America named her the Outstanding Teacher of the Year. She has been a master teacher at Texas Thespian Conference for two years and at the 2023 Louisiana Junior Thespian Conference in its inaugural year.
Third Grade Designs Balloons
Inspired by Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
Third graders in Mary Lee Saucier ’91’s STeaM Class took on a lofty challenge — designing and building balloons inspired by the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The New York City parade’s giant helium balloons generally measure several stories in size, and depict characters from pop culture. The first balloons were introduced by Tony Sarg for the 1928 parade, serving as a replacement for live animals which had previously appeared in the parade. The student designs, while drastically smaller, were ultimately just as creative and perhaps even more inspiring.
Students read the book Balloons over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade by Melissa Sweet, then broke into small groups to discuss. After working together to choose the characters, each group of third graders began the first steps of the design thinking process.
“I wanted to make a character that kids would like to see,” said Winston Aucoin ’33
They created a materials supply list based on a 2D design of their character. Once their plans were in place, and the supplies had been ordered, they began to build — and troubleshoot.
“Suddenly when that first balloon is inflated, they often see they need to adjust their plans,” said Saucier. “It’s a great learning experience and a way for our students to use their critical thinking and engineering skills to bring their vision to life.”
Once the designs were complete, students hosted a parade in the Lower School quad to the cheers and delight of their fellow Saints.
“Unfortunately, in the past we’ve had some balloons that popped right as we walked out the door to put on the parade,” said Saucier. “It’s a way for our kids to learn that sometimes things do happen. How do we rebound from those things? How do we persevere?”
Most importantly, Saucier said, engaging students in hands-on projects that spark their interest and passions helps instill a love of thinking and learning that they will carry with them throughout their lives.
“Projects like these help our students hone the skills they need to observe, investigate, and collaborate with others to solve meaningful real-world problems,” said Saucier. “I can’t wait to see the ways our Saints help change our world.”
THREE ST. MARTIN’S STUDENTS AMONG 15 FINALISTS IN STEM SIGNING DAY, HOSTED BY NEW ORLEANS SAINTS AND PELICANS
Three St. Martin’s students – BoFan Hua ’24, Jeremy Hua ’25, and Cole LaCoste ’25 – were among just 15 finalists in the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans STEM Signing Day at STEM Fest on October 14, 2023.
St. Martin’s was the only school to have more than one student participate in STEM Signing Day, where students were honored for their current accomplishments and asked to declare their college of choice.
St. Martin’s Earns Gold Recognition in AP School Honor Roll
St. Martin’s was recognized as a Gold member of the 2023 AP School Honor Roll. Schools can earn the Honor Roll recognition annually based on their ability to increase their school’s college-going culture, to provide opportunities for students to earn college credit, and to maximize college readiness. The AP School Honor Roll offers four levels of distinction: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
St. Martin’s had 67% of seniors who took at least one AP exam during high school (Gold level score), 49% of seniors scoring a three or higher on at least one AP exam (Gold level score), and 33% of seniors who took five or more AP exams (Platinum level score). As part of its program of study, StM Upper School students may choose from 21 AP courses offered.
Additionally, St. Martin’s was recognized with the AP Access Award for providing all students the chance to participate in AP, including students of underrepresented populations.

Students Earn Theatre Letterman Jackets
This year some theatre students sported a new look. For the first time, St. Martin’s theatre students had the opportunity to earn letterman jackets for participation in the theatre program. St. Martin’s Thespian Troupe 4744 is a member of the International Thespian Society (ITS), an honor society for high school and middle school theatre students.
Students may earn ITS points by participating in theatre productions, with one Thespian point representing approximately ten hours of quality work that they do as part of class or extracurricular participation. In order to be eligible for a Theatre letter, students must earn 60 points. The following Saints have qualified for that honor: Lainey Dobson ’24, Emory Farber ’24, Kyle Lawrence ’24, Oli Lyons ’25, Charles Patrick ’24, and Colin Richard ’24
The jackets carry a much deeper meaning than mere fabric and embroidery. They serve as a symbol of the students’ achievements and dedication to performing arts at St. Martin’s.
Singin’ and Splashin’ in the Solomon Theater
St. Martin’s Performing Arts took to the stage of the Solomon Theater for two splashy and impressive shows of “Singin’ in the Rain, Jr.” on October 13 and 14, 2023.
In just six short weeks, St. Martin’s Performing Arts faculty, staff, students, and volunteers were able to pull off a fantastic production, complete with real rain on the Solomon Theater stage. When the rain started to pour, audible gasps turned into enthusiastic applause as the audience realized the rain wasn’t simply a special effect. The cast and crew shone in two spectacular performances directed by Lynne Bordelon. The tech crew, led by Emma Massengale and assisted by Robby Stanley and Patrick Comer, outdid itself with the impressive rain shower mechanisms, in addition to a well-appointed set.
“Our students work incredibly hard – balancing homework and projects, other extracurricular activities, and family life,” said Theatre Director Lynne Bordelon. “They give up nights and weekends to run lines, practice choreography, build sets, design stage lighting sequences, repair costumes – you name it. It is exciting and affirming to see their work recognized in a tangible way. It’s a special honor to earn and I’m so proud of our students for all their achievements!”

Serves as 2024 Ring Day Speaker
When the juniors of the Class of 2025 received their class rings in the Dan and Frances White Chapel on March 14, 2024, St. Martin’s alumnus Chike Ozah ’96 was there. The renowned director, screenwriter, cinematographer, and producer, and half of the directing duo Coodie & Chike, returned to his alma mater to serve as Ring Day speaker, hoping to inspire
current Saints.
In his remarks to the students, families, faculty, and staff gathered, he encouraged students to find their passion. “If you don’t know what your passion is, figure out what is the thing that you would do for free... then find a way to fuel that passion... Find what you love and then connect that with faith. Connect your passion, faith, and goals together.”
Ozah referenced the faith foundation that is at the heart of St. Martin’s mission and encouraged students to lean in to their faith as they
face struggles in life.
“You’re going to face a lot of tasks, they’re going to feel very daunting,” he said. “You’re not going to know how you’re going to achieve this because they feel larger than life. But I promise you can just get in the driver’s seat, put that energy in God, and He will take care of it.”
St. Martin’s extends its thanks to Ozah, along with the many alumni who return to campus each year to meet with and serve as inspiration for current Saints.
StM Community Donates Coats to New Orleans Mission
Each year, the St. Martin’s community joins together to live out our ideal of Service and support a worthy cause as part of our celebration of our patron saint, St. Martin de Tours. This year, the school followed the example of St. Martin himself and hosted a coat drive. Martin of Tours was a soldier in the army of Constantine the Great in the fourth century. On a winter’s day Martin
encountered a poor beggar at the city gates and cut his military cloak in half to help shield the shivering man from the cold. That night Martin had a vision that Christ came to him wearing part of the cloak Martin had given, saying: “What thou hast done for that poor man, thou hast done for me.” Martin then left the military to devote his life to the Christian faith.
More than 100 new or gently worn winter coats were donated by the St. Martin’s community to benefit the New Orleans Mission. During the St. Martin’s Day chapel service, Fr. Jeff Millican blessed the coat drive donations from the StM community. StM extends its gratitude to Dads’ Club member Andy Wittich ’89 and Erika Washington Wittich ’91 for taking the St. Martin’s community’s donations to the New Orleans Mission. We thank our students, families, faculty, and staff for their donations.

LEARNING While Serving
Inside the Merrick Visual Arts Center, several juniors build papier-mâché structures of bowls that will later be covered in fabric and painted. Though it may look like an art class, it is actually a chance for St. Martin’s to live out its mission to prepare students to “thrive in college and in life through Faith, Scholarship, and Service.” Nearby, the freshman class is also making bowls using the laser printer in the Gibbs Family Center for Innovation + Design. The students are creating the bowls as just one piece of a year-long service learning project centered around food insecurity.
This year, the Classes of 2025 and 2027 have embarked on an advisory-
centered service learning curriculum that is integrated into the Upper School’s academic programming.
In the fall semester, the two classes began learning about the issue of food insecurity by connecting with St. Anna’s Episcopal Parish’s Food Pantry. The pantry identifies families experiencing financial hardships which cause them to run out of SNAP benefits toward the end of each month, and helps fill the gap by providing two bags of groceries on a monthly basis.
From there, the two classes dove into collecting, examining, analyzing, and publishing data about food insecurity, nutritional values, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program (SNAP). Students engaged in mock applications and shopping for specific families to learn more about the benefits and limitations of assistance programming. They examined food labels and prepared data graphs on food insecurity and nutritional values. Finally, they shared their findings with the school community via student-designed flyers and posters. They led a schoolwide Thanksgiving food drive for St. Anna’s, which resulted in filling St. Anna’s pantry for the entire month of December.
For students, taking part in this process has been eye-opening.
“The service learning project of the first semester was humbling,” said
(Clockwise, from top) Students work to create bowls using a variety of artistic techniques. In the fall, a schoolwide food drive opened students’ eyes to the realities of food insecurity. freshman Grayson Lambert. “It showed how difficult it can be to manage finances, especially when there is almost no money to spend.”
In the spring, the classes took all they learned and collaborated with two other community partners: Education Equals Hope (E=H), an organization dedicated to providing for the education of those living in impoverished situations, and Empty Bowls, a grassroots movement by artists and craftspeople to raise money for food-related charities that care for and feed the hungry in communities around the world.
Students in all divisions, along with faculty and staff, joined in to create bowls made from various
materials. The bowls were then sold during St. Martin’s Arts Fest in April 2024, with the proceeds donated to Education Equals Hope. St. Martin’s was partnered with Ecole St. Esprit in Haiti, where E=H helps fill students’ empty lunch boxes with rice and beans for the families’ evening meals.
To develop interpersonal connections, Zoom meetings between our students and those of the Creole partner school in Haiti were moderated by our French-speaking students. Preparations for the Zoom meetings included studying the connection of Haiti to New Orleans, working on questions to ask peers at Ecole St. Esprit, and virtual immersion into the daily lives of Haitian students.
This service learning was intentionally integrated into the curriculum, helping to grow empathy, purpose, and agency, as well as providing students with an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of data in real world contexts. Additionally, it provides St. Martin’s students, faculty, and staff even more opportunities to live our mission and Episcopal identity.

MAKING HIST RY
A record-breaking 2022-23 season paved the way for the historymaking 2023-24 season where the Saints competed in their first state championship game in school history.
After a strong 2022-23 varsity basketball season that featured a state championship tournament appearance for the first time in StM history and the entry of then-junior Matthew Weaver ’24 in the 1,000 Point Club, Saints fans’ hopes were high for the 2023-24 season.
The team made sure not to disappoint. The season featured strong wins against tough opponents, and two seniors, Cooper Odom and Patrick LaForge, joined teammate Weaver in the 1,000 Point Club. Weaver also broke the StM record for points scored in a career, becoming the No. 1 all-time scorer in school history.
A thrilling 57-50 home win over No. 10 Westminster Christian punched the Saints’ ticket to Marsh Madness and the LHSAA basketball semifinals at Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles.
In preparation for the state tournament in Lake Charles, the team practiced at both Loyola University’s Sports Complex and Louisiana State University’s Pete Maravich Assembly Center. They even caught up with a few StM alumni while en route to Lake Charles.
Once at the tournament, the team made quick work of Hamilton Christian Academy, winning 62-33. The win advanced the team to the first boys’ basketball state championship finals game in St. Martin’s history.
The Saints battled hard against their district rival, the top-seeded Crescent City Christian, but ultimately fell in the state championship game. After the loss, head coach Mike Odom ’92 said of his team, “These guys are champions in my book and I’ll go to battle with them any day.”

26th Martin de Tours Award Recipient L ibby P edrick S artain ’72
Libby Pedrick Sartain, of the Class of 1972, is the 2023-24 recipient of St. Martin’s Episcopal School’s Martin de Tours Award.
The award is given each school year to an alum who is an outstanding citizen, consistently serving the community and demonstrating a commitment to the highest standards in his/her chosen field of endeavor. Sartain is St. Martin’s 26th recipient of the Martin de Tours award.
After receiving the news from Head of School Whitney Samuel Drennan ’94, Sartain responded, “I am deeply honored to receive the Martin de Tours Award... My journey since graduating in 1972 has been enriched by the values instilled in me during my time at St. Martin’s. From the strong foundation of faith, scholarship, and service, to the enduring friendships cultivated within those walls, I have been blessed with opportunities to carry forward the lessons learned into a lifetime of meaningful contribution. It is a privilege to maintain connections to both my alma mater and the vibrant spirit of New Orleans, nurturing friendships that have endured nearly six decades. I am grateful for the continued support and inspiration from my school community, guiding me on a path of purpose and fulfillment.”
Sartain was recognized at the award ceremony on the school’s campus in April.
After graduating from St. Martin’s, Sartain attended Southern Methodist University. She graduated from SMU in 1976, earning a bachelor’s in General Business and Organizational Behavior. She then attended the University of North Texas, earning an MBA in 1977.
for her expertise in human resources, including being named one of the 25 most powerful women in HR in 2005 by Human Resources Executive Online Magazine. Sartain was named a fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources (1998) and is a National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) Board Leadership Fellow. In 2020, she was honored by the NACD in the Directorship 100. She was recently named one of the 2023 Most Influential Corporate Board Directors by Women Inc. Magazine.
In addition to her impressive professional accomplishments, Sartain has held many leadership roles in the community. She currently serves on the board of directors of ManpowerGroup and was formerly a director with Shutterfly Inc. and Peet’s Coffee and Tea, Inc. She has served on the board of the AARP since 2014, serving as vice chair from 2016 to 2020. She has been Chairman of the AARP Foundation since 2020. Sartain has also held various volunteer positions with local nonprofits and church organizations.
“Libby Sartain’s career accomplishments made her a great choice for this year’s recipient of the Martin de Tours award,” said Drennan in making the announcement. “Sartain’s life is a testament not only to the quality of a St. Martin’s education but also to the power of dedication, leadership, and service to one’s community. She embodies what we hope all our students will become: committed to the ideals of Faith, Scholarship, and Service.”
Sartain is a renowned business advisor, board member, and volunteer, following a distinguished 30-year career in human resources. Sartain served as head of human resources for both Southwest Airlines and Yahoo! Inc., leading significant business transformation initiatives as a member of executive leadership teams. She has helped to guide global human resources efforts focusing on attracting, retaining, and developing employees. During her tenure at each company, both Yahoo! and Southwest were listed on the Fortune 100 Best Companies To Work For in America and the Fortune 500.

Jessica Raines believes wholeheartedly in the highquality educational experience St. Martin’s provides because she has seen the difference it has made for her sons. Jessica has been a very active StM parent volunteer as the Booster Club President. She and her husband, Brandon, are the parents of Brennan ’27, Dylan ’24, and Peyton ’23.
Here, Jessica tells why she gives back to St. Martin’s
in her own words.
Our StM connection: My husband Brandon and I decided to send our first child, Peyton, to StM for Middle School and we loved it so much that we decided to send our other two children as well!
One St. Martin’s memory: Storming the court after our boys’ varsity basketball team beat Hamilton Christian in the quarterfinals and tailgating with all of our football family and friends!
Why we chose St. Martin’s: We chose StM because we wanted our children to have a wellrounded education with an emphasis on academics, athletics, and community. The StM motto “Faith, Scholarship and Service” has truly been embodied in our family’s experience at StM.
What makes StM special: StM not only allows but embraces a student’s desire to participate in all aspects of the school, from National Honor Society to athletics, theatre, and so on. There are not many schools where a student can “do it all” but StM is a unique gem where students grow and become successful, productive, and thriving members of our community. My family and I have made lifelong memories and friendships with other StM families and we would not trade our experience for the world.
My favorite StM tradition: There are too many to list here, but here are a few of the best traditions/events: Jambalaya Cook-off, Mardi Gras Bunco, annual StM Golf Tournament, Gala, Senior Prank Day, Ringing the Bell, and Senior Sunrise.
Why I give back: I have been honored to serve as Booster Club President for the last two years. Giving back through service creates fellowship and an investment in our school that is meaningful to students, parents, and all of our StM community. The Booster Club has been able to accomplish its mission of building an active community that enhances our athletic department by its volunteerism, community-building activities, and fundraising. I am very proud of the Booster Club’s success!

The return of St. Martin’s alumna
Whitney Samuel Drennan ’94 as St. Martin’s 10th Head of School is both something new and something known.
A dedicated leader and respected educator, Whitney Samuel Drennan ’94 knows independent schools well. Following her graduation from St. Martin’s, Drennan attended Vanderbilt University where she graduated Cum Laude in Early Childhood Education and Special Education Hearing Impairment. She returned to New Orleans to earn a masters degree in curriculum and instruction at the University of New Orleans. She began her teaching career as a kindergarten teacher at Louise S. McGehee School, where she served in a number of roles, including Head of Lower School, for more than two decades.
The Bell sat down with Mrs. Drennan to reflect on her first year as St. Martin’s Head of School and to look forward to the school’s bright future.
WHAT DO YOU WISH EVERYONE KNEW ABOUT ST. MARTIN’S?
St. Martin’s campus is filled with endless opportunities for students to explore, grow, and thrive. At St. Martin’s, our students realize their passions, design their own path, pursue their aspirations, and grow in their faith and service to others. To me, what sets us apart from everyone else, where St. Martin’s truly shines, is in the way our faculty, staff, and coaches not only go the extra mile, but the extra 10 miles, in helping our students succeed at anything they want to try.
Our students don’t have to choose one path — they can be winners on the field, scholars in the classroom, and stars on stage all at once. I love how our faculty really take the time to develop meaningful personal relationships with students. And that commitment to helping our students thrive through Faith, Scholarship, and Service is what makes — and has always made — St. Martin’s so great.
YOU
MENTION FAITH, SCHOLARSHIP, AND SERVICE OFTEN. WHAT MAKES YOU SO PASSIONATE ABOUT ST. MARTIN’S MISSION?
It’s such a great mission to “prepare students to thrive in college and in life through Faith, Scholarship, Service.” Academic excellence has always been a way StM stands out and continues to stand out, but to couple that with our loving, inclusive background in faith is so powerful. When our students grow in knowledge and faith they realize the world is bigger than each one of us, so the character and commitment to service grows naturally.
WHAT
IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING BACK ON CAMPUS?
Seeing today’s Saints participate in some of the cherished traditions I remember
so vividly as a student myself has been so meaningful for me. I was with the Class of 2024 as they gathered outside the Van Slate House before their commencement ceremony. It was surreal seeing our students dressed in their traditional white tuxedos and dresses, just like me, my class, and so many other Saints before us.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE STM TRADITION?
I love the Pep Rallies! There’s something so special about seeing the entire campus come together — cheerleaders, athletes, younger students, even our George Cottage babies! I also love Homecoming Week and seeing how tradition is still strong, from decorating the halls to all the celebrations and dress-up days. I just love the feeling of the excitement and seeing our school spirit at its best on display.
WHAT WERE SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR FIRST YEAR AS HEAD OF SCHOOL?
Homecoming was really special, starting with our incredible Upper School Choir singing the national anthem, the game itself, and, of course, the crowning of king and queen. Between Career Day and Spirits Party, it was so wonderful seeing so many alums re-engaging with their alma mater this year.
We had so many amazing events where the entire community came together to celebrate, like StM Day and schoolwide chapels, Arts Fest, supporting athletic events like our varsity boys’ basketball team as they went to the state championship, etc. Going to New York City with the choir as they performed at Radio City Music Hall was wonderful. One specific day that stands out was May 7. That morning, we celebrated our athletes in the Spring Athletic Awards Ceremony; we had the Spring Concert that night. Seeing our students, like Carter [Scheuermann ’24] sign to continue his athletic career in college and then shine performing in the chapel just highlights
all the opportunities our students have, and all they accomplish and experience in a school year. To me, it just perfectly encapsulated all we do at StM.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT AS YOU LOOK AHEAD TO YEAR TWO?
I’m excited to continue to strengthen and improve upon all the successes we had this year. We have so many great things happening on campus, with incredible faculty and students. I’m looking forward to sharing all that good news and to welcoming back alumni who haven’t been as connected to StM as they want to be. I’m excited to hit the ground running and build on our successes of last year.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO IMPART OR ACCOMPLISH AT STM?
The world is changing all around us, yet St. Martin’s mission — to prepare our students to thrive in college and in life — is timeless and strong. Today information and media is everywhere, and with the growth of AI tools, it is more critical than ever to prepare students with a solid foundation of Faith, Scholarship, and Service. We want our graduates to be able to use all their knowledge and to leverage technology in a safe, smart way so they’re not simply prepared for life beyond college, but ready to thrive, serve others, and be positive change-makers in the world.

A Conversation with Alumna Shelby Snyder Hammer ’89
Shelby Snyder Hammer came to St. Martin’s in seventh grade, the very year she decided to become a teacher. As a Saint, Shelby was very active in Key Club and was chosen by her peers as “Most Likely to Succeed.” And that she did! Shelby has been working in independent schools like St. Martin’s for many years. In 2018, she began her tenure as Head of School at the Trinity School of Midland in Texas, an independent, PK-3 through 12 college preparatory school rooted in Episcopal tradition, much like her alma mater.
Alumni Relations Coordinator Meri Maurer Monsour ’02 recently interviewed Shelby about her St. Martin’s experience and where she is today.
When you think back to your days as a student at St. Martin’s, what first comes to mind?
I credit my St. Martin’s experience all the time. Without a doubt, I’m on this path because of St. Martin’s. I just had a really great experience. Basically, I loved school! I was super involved in Key Club. I was drawn to the service aspect of it, and it was sponsored by Dianne Greer, and I thought - and still think - that she hung the moon. I was Mrs. Greer for Senior Teacher Day.
Mr. Marsalis’ class also comes to mind, where the highest designation you could get was to be a “Math Wienie,” and he even gave out little hot dog certificates! I had to work for it, but I appreciate him not letting me back away from math and science, even though I was more drawn to English and social studies. Also, Humanities was a standout class. I remember loving the team teaching aspect of it, and the double period was a really novel idea at that time.
I think back a lot about the traditions we had, and some of my favorite StM traditions informed those experiences that we’re creating here at Trinity for our students. I loved St. Martin’s Day, especially the all-school chapel service and the chance to be with different divisions. I loved decorating the hallways for Homecoming week. It was so fun, I’m actually hoping [Trinity] will start doing that!
How did you feel when you graduated from St. Martin’s?
Oh, I was super excited to go to college. I really felt ready for that next stage of life, and I got there and I was ready. Not that it wasn’t challenging, but I knew I had the foundation that I needed. I remember being confident that St. Martin’s would remain a part of my life, and it has!
What first attracted you to the field of education?
I pretty much decided in seventh grade that I was going to be a middle school social studies teacher in an independent school! The quality of the relationships between students and teachers really had an impact on me.
Unlike how strongly I felt about becoming a teacher, I never actually planned to go into administration. After teaching for a few years, going back to school for my M.A. in History, and having my first child, I stayed home for two years. When I wanted to go back to work, the open opportunity was an administrative position, in Admissions. I loved being on the administrative side. It was great preparation to see how the back end of a school works. After a few years, though, the division head role appealed to me because it’s more academic and student-facing. After being a division head, Head of School seemed like the next logical step.
What do you see as emerging trends in education for independent schools?
In some ways, independent school education is the same as it’s always been—we’re educating the whole child, preparing them for college and life beyond, teaching the skills that they need to be good citizens, focusing on servant leadership. How we accomplish those goals is really changing. We’re focusing more on critical thinking skills; it used to be that you had to be a critical reader, and maybe you would learn some information through TV, but now media is everywhere. Students must learn how to differentiate and rank those sources, to understand what’s real and reliable. We’re not simply teaching them to use technology to make life easier, but how to do so wisely, safely, and ethically.
There’s also a greater emphasis on students’ mental health. Students today are really struggling with anxiety, depression, and feeling pressured, even if we as parents and schools don’t think we’re pressuring kids. Now, more than ever, schools have to partner with families to build resilience and healthy coping skills and to promote realistic expectations... We help them learn that they can do hard things! Students have such a fear of failure, we need to guide them more on perspective-taking.
What do you think is most valuable about an Episcopal education? Faith is a really critical part of our
identities; it helps us understand the idea that we have value simply because we exist, not because of what we do! An Episcopal education affirms our Christian beliefs, but it allows respect for other religions. There’s a saying about Episcopalians - they’re big tent people, lots of room here! At Trinity, all of our students have daily chapel services, which provide opportunities not just to worship, but to slow down.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
When I decided that I wanted to be a Division Head, I went to talk to the Head of School, who told me, “The most important thing you need to remember is that it’s all about the people. Every decision you make— whether you think it’s about curriculum, or budget, or logistics—every decision is about people.” There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about those words.
When your students graduate and go on to college, what do you hope you have most imparted to them?
At graduation, I’m always the last person to speak, and I give the seniors a charge. I want our students to go into the world with a balance of confidence and humility. I want them to know they’re prepared for what comes next, but to know that none of us do it alone, and it’s OK to ask for help. I want them to have a strong faith foundation, and a personal faith that will guide them through the many decisions that lie ahead. I remind them that you have value simply because you are. All you have to do is just be!
Shelby attended Duke University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in history. She went on to get her first teaching position, as she predicted, teaching middle school history and English. After several years teaching, she moved with her husband to Tuscaloosa, and earned a master’s degree from the University of Alabama. Shelby then returned to the world of independent schools, working in admissions, then serving as a Head of Middle School. She earned an M. Ed. in Private School Leadership at the Klingenstein Center at Columbia University’s Teachers College. Shelby and her husband Allen live in Midland and have two adult children, David and Betsy.
St. Martin’s Honors Two All-Time Greats with Dorothy Porter Service Award
d ianne G reer
2023 Recipient
For 27 years, Dianne Greer gave her time and talents to the families of StM. Dianne taught geometry and other mathematics courses in the Upper School. In the classroom, she was a consummate professional and a superb teacher, working well with students at all ability levels. In addition, some of Dianne’s most significant work was done through her efforts with clubs and organizations.
In the 1980s, Dianne’s leadership elevated St. Martin’s Key Club to one of the most respected positions in the Louisiana-Mississippi-Tennessee regional organization. The club regularly won awards for its service and charity work. When Dianne switched to being a student council sponsor in the early 1990s, she helped to raise the level of success, competence, and achievement of that organization. Her spearheading

“Tootie Conway embodies everything that is St. Martin’s,” said Head of School Whitney Samuel Drennan ’94. “Her dedication to our school and students is inspiring and undeniable. She is a beloved member of the St. Martin’s community, and a most fitting choice for this year’s Dorothy Porter Service Award.”
For four decades, Tootie Conway generously has given her time and talents to the betterment of St. Martin’s. She has served as an assistant in pre-k and kindergarten and as a first and third grade teacher. For the past several years, she has served as the first grade assistant teacher.
Mrs. Conway’s many talents, her easy manner, and her patience endear her to students and their families. With a smile on her face, she offers help to anyone who needs it. Tootie and her beloved late husband, Jimmy, raised three
of the Habitat for Humanity project and her guidance in the council’s involvement in the Louisiana Association of Student Councils are two highlights of Dianne’s wonderful mentoring of her students.
Competence, kindness, dedication, and professionalism: these words come quickly to mind when thinking of a description of Dianne’s character and style. Few St. Martin’s community members have done more to develop leadership skills in our students, and she did it all with class and decorum. Dianne Greer, in many ways, possesses the same qualities that made Dorothy Porter such a legendary figure.
The 2007 edition of The Shield, St. Martin’s yearbook, was dedicated to her. In its homage, the staff stated perfectly the influence she had on the school: “Every morning announcement,
every Homecoming, every special event or average day could not have happened without the time and effort Dianne continually devoted to her school and students. Never letting a single detail slip, Ms. Greer guided her students in all their endeavors of Faith, Scholarship, and Service. A leader of leaders, Ms. Greer played an integral role in the lives of every student at St. Martin’s.”
After St. Martin’s, she went on to teach at the Episcopal School of Baton Rouge, where she was equally involved in school life. Dianne is also the mother of StM alumna Lindsey Greer ’02. Dianne was honored with the award presentation on May 13, 2023 before a crowd of family, friends, alumni, and community members.
children who are St. Martin’s alumni.
As a parent, Tootie was a member of the Mothers’ Club and Booster Club. She hosted events in her home to honor students and fellow faculty members. A skilled seamstress, she sewed the famous pocket skirt for Ms. Janet Russo. After Ms. Janet’s passing, Tootie made a pocket skirt for her grandson, Evan, as he took over the role of “Pocket Boy.”
Tootie and Jimmy were regular fixtures at St. Martin’s events, cheering on athletic teams and supporting schoolsponsored activities, and they continued to do so long after their children graduated. Tootie is still found on the sidelines, in the chapel, and at theater performances, supporting and encouraging players, singers, and actors to achieve their best. Former students see her in the community and often go out of their way to chat with her about their days at StM and update her on
their life accomplishments.
“In the classroom, Tootie has a gift of finding each child’s talent and encouraging them to reach their potential,” said longtime colleague Ashley Woods Bozeman ’85. “She loves being involved with everything StM. Like the Energizer bunny, Tootie Conway keeps going on and on, in love and committed support of her dear St. Martin’s!”
Tootie has a servant heart, always giving to not only the StM community, but also to the greater community. Each year she leads the collection of Mardi Gras beads for ARC and St. Michael’s Special School.
Tootie was presented with the 2023-24 Dorothy Porter Service Award on May 10, 2024 with family, students, alumni, and other community members present.
Athletic ExcellenceCelebrating with St. Martin’s Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame
Since 2006, the Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame has recognized individuals and/or teams who were involved in interscholastic athletics as players, coaches, athletic trainers or administrators and who distinguished themselves in any of these capacities while at St. Martin’s.
The 2022 and 2023 inductees were honored during special assemblies in the Solomon Theater, in front of students and faculty from the Middle and Upper School, on the Friday morning of Homecoming weekend. Emceed by sports media personality Fletcher Mackel, the ceremonies were the perfect combination of celebratory and momentous. Each assembly ended with the singing of the alma mater. Inductees were later recognized on the football field during the Homecoming game that evening.
The 2022 Alumni Athletic Hall of Fame inductees, honored Friday, October 21, 2022, were Leslie Holt Beery ’88, Julie Lyeki Richardson ’94, and Danny Navar ’99
Leslie Holt Beery was an accomplished swimmer and one of the best to ever compete for the Saints. During her senior year, she led the Saints to win state where the team had a 10-1 dual meet record. Over the course of her high school swimming career, she was All American in the 100 and 200 yard freestyle, and the 200 yard individual medley. She was Honorable Mention All American in the 50 and 500 yard freestyle. In addition to her athletic achievements, Beery was Miss St. Martin’s, Class President, and Homecoming Queen. Beery was introduced by coach Warren Lind.
Julie Lyeki Richardson was a four sport athlete, competing in basketball, track and field, volleyball, and cross country. She is a member of St. Martin’s “1,000 Point Club” for basketball, having scored 1,427 points during her high school career, and was a starter and crucial member of the team when they won the state championship during her junior and senior years, when she was also All District. In track and field, Richardson ran the 400 on two State Championship teams, and was a member of the champion mile relay team. She was introduced by her coach, and fellow HOF member, Jim Marsalis ’62
Danny Navar was the most accomplished wrestler in school history, winning the state championship during his sophomore, junior, and senior years and becoming state runner-up
freshman year. During his tenure at St. Martin’s Navar won every major wrestling championship in the state and competed on the Louisiana Olympic Wrestling Team multiple times. Navar’s overall record was 135-23 - his total wins matching his weight class. In addition to his wrestling achievements, Navar was a three-year football letterman. He was introduced by teammate Andy Chrestman ’98.
The 2023 inductees were Greg Page ’93, Wendy Manard ’95, and the 2002 Boys’ Varsity Soccer Team, who were honored on September 15, 2023.
Greg Page ’93 is one of the best male athletes to ever compete for St. Martin’s. He was a multi-sport competitor who excelled in basketball and track and field. He was voted by his classmates as “Most Athletic” his senior year. As a basketball player from eighth grade onward, he stood out on the court as a member of the Saints squad. Page went on to become one of the highest scorers
in school history with 1,278 points. He was voted team MVP twice and earned multiple postseason accolades as an upperclassman. In track and field, Page’s event was the mile relay, for which he won a district and regional title.
Wendy Manard ’95 was a phenomenal three-season, multi-sport competitor in cross country, soccer, and track and field. She excelled on the track and for four straight years she placed in the top 10 at statewide meets. She was an integral member of the teams that won state in 1992 and 1993. In 1994, when the team was state runner-up, Manard placed third in the 1600-meter and second in the 3200-meter. As a senior, she was also voted “Most Athletic” by her classmates.
The 2002 State Championship Boys’ Varsity Soccer Team joins the ranks of other excellent undefeated Hall of Fame teams. This group of Saints finished the regular season with a record of 20-03 and was undefeated in district play. They allowed no goals to be scored on
them during the first three rounds of the playoffs and won the state title, beating their opponent 3-1. Five Saints were named to the first team all district. Members of the team are:
Ben Bologna ’06, David Bordson-Bozzo ’02, Ilyas Chiali ’04, Chris Denuna ’06, Eric DeRoche ’02, Wheeler Graf ’02, Aaron Hyatt ’06, Joey Leone ’02, Ben Lusk ’02, Juan Mendez ’02, John Moustoukas ’02, Beau Ordemann ’02, Neej Patel ’05, Mark Tessier ’02, Brett Vogt ’02, and David Woodard ’02. TREASURED TRADITIONS
THE SPIRITS PARTY
by Betsy Gayle Fox ’82
On June 5, 1982, the night after our graduation at McAlister Auditorium, my classmates and I attended a cocktail party in the Martin Family Library. We enjoyed socializing with the faculty who had guided us throughout our StM journeys. My friend Guy Farber ’82 tells me that was the Spirits Party, and maybe he is correct. That was my first experience with the party, and I had only been an alumna for one day! Whether it was indeed the first version of the Spirits Party doesn’t really matter. What matters is that since the day I graduated from St. Martin’s, I’ve always been a proud alumna who loves socializing with the friends I made during my years at StM.
Since then, I remember the party always occurring on the second Saturday in May. After I graduated from Sewanee and lived in Metairie, I always attended the Spirits Party and enjoyed seeing fellow alums. Once I moved to Charlotte, I was really only able to attend the Spirits Parties that coincided with my reunion years. I remember my 15th reunion in particular. I have pictures of my classmates with our children playing on the Lower School playground or rolling around on blankets laid out for the babies. My daughter Ashley, who was 8 months old at the time, met Gretchen Drennan ’82’s son, Peter, and Guy Farber’s daughter, Lainey. It was so great to meet each other’s children and talk about all the things young parents talk about!
We had a big turnout for our 30th reunion party, which was on a Friday night, and we continued the party on the Van Slate lawn the following evening. There was a lot of hugging and laughing going on those two nights!
Since I’ve moved back to Metairie, I have enjoyed attending the Spirits Party every year, except 2020, of course. I love that alumni of all ages are invited to the party because I love seeing my friends from classes other than my own. At some schools, you only see the big reunion classes, so we’re lucky that all of our alumni are invited back to campus for reunion weekend each year. What used to just consist of the Spirits Party really has turned into a reunion weekend. We have Alumni Chapel on Friday morning, individual class parties on Friday night, the Alumni Hoops basketball game and Alumni Playdate on Saturday morning, and the culminating Spirits Party on Saturday night.
I’ve loved helping plan the Spirits Party for the last two years, and I will continue to do so in my new role as president of the Alumni Council. We welcome any ideas you have to make the Spirits Party even better, but the most important part of the Spirits Party is you, our incredible alumni! I can’t wait to see you next year on May 10, 2025! Together We Are Saints!
Sincerely,
Betsy Gayle Fox ’82
P.S. We’d love to have you for Homecoming too! It is on Friday, September 27, 2024. Please come and enjoy Fall Fellowship with us!

Fr. JenkinS Remembering
Rev. John Stone Jenkins
July 26, 1924 - April 17, 2023
There are some leaders in the history of St. Martin’s Episcopal School who have made such an indelible mark that it is nearly impossible to envision today’s St. Martin’s without their contributions.
The late Rev. John Stone Jenkins is one such figure.
John Stone Jenkins was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Robert Floyd Jenkins and Glena Pritchard Jenkins. His early teenage years were difficult, as his father was killed in an automobile accident and the bank foreclosed on their home. He began delivering newspapers, eventually taking on two paper routes to save money for college.
After one year at Texas A&M, he transferred to Louisiana State University due to strained finances. He joined the US Army Air Corps in 1943 as an officer and began training as a pilot, bombardier, or navigator. His obituary detailed an account of his brave service:
“He ended up as a navigator of B-17s in the US Army Air Corps’ 833rd Bomber Squadron, 486th Bomber Group. On his first mission, flying through heavy flak, his plane burst into flames, forcing him and the rest of the crew to parachute out over enemy lines... He landed in a field in Belgium, evaded enemy capture, and found some US forces who were engaged in the Battle of the Bulge. John made his way back to Allied-occupied France, caught a flight to England, and got right back to navigating B-17s. Eventually he became a lead navigator for the squadron, and in 1945 was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.”
When World War II ended, Fr. Jenkins returned to LSU and eventually met his future wife, Mary Alice (Jones) Jenkins. After graduating from LSU in 1947, he attended the University of Chicago, where he earned a master’s degree. After their marriage in 1949, Fr. Jenkins went on to attend and graduate from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary.
In 1953, he made his way back to Louisiana and began his time at St. Martin’s, serving as chaplain in 1953, before becoming the assistant headmaster from 1954-1962.
His job at St. Martin’s was three-fold: He conducted chapel services for the entire school, taught religion to the seventh, eighth, eleventh, and twelfth grades, and supervised religious studies in the Lower School.
Instrumental in setting the tone and overall philosophy of the school in the early years, he was beloved by his students and their families. As alumna Mary Sue Roniger ’60 recalls, Fr. Jenkins made a lasting impression on so many Saints, helping to shape their character and future trajectory.
“My hope is that other students in later decades will have the warm, fond memories of some of their teachers that our generation has for Fr. Jenkins,” Roniger said. “He taught us so much about life and acceptance.”
From 1971 to 1984, Fr. Jenkins was rector of Trinity Church in New Orleans, and wrote the book, What Think Ye of Jesus.
In 1985, he married Lynn Louise Biggs, his wife of 37 years. The two shared a love of adventure and boating.
In 2010, St. Martin’s honored Fr. Jenkins as the recipient of the Dorothy Porter Service Award, recognizing him as an “exemplary St. Martin’s citizen who has consistently served the school with time, talent and treasures and who represents... Faith, Scholarship, and Service.”
Even after he closed out his time at St. Martin’s and returned to parish ministry, Fr. Jenkins continued to make his mark on Episcopal education, serving as rector to a parish with a day school and then developing a program for adult theological education. Known as Disciples of Christ in Community, it is still used in a variety of Episcopal parishes across the country. Training and administration for the program is based at the School of Theology, University of the South.
Fr. Jenkins continues to be remembered by so many in the St. Martin’s community as an inspiring teacher and mentor.
The Rev. John Stone Jenkins died peacefully at the age of 98 on April 17, 2023. Memorial services were held shortly after at St. Andrew’s Cathedral in Jackson, Mississippi. St. Martin’s Episcopal School is eternally grateful for his life and ministry; may his soul, through the mercy of God, rest in peace, and may light perpetual shine upon him.

Grandfriends’ Day 2024
supports StM athletics Golf Tournament
It was a perfect day for golf on Friday, November 3, 2023 at the annual St. Martin’s Golf Tournament! Participation in the golf tournament directly benefits our student athletes as all proceeds benefit the StM athletic department, which offers more than 20 LHSAA-sanctioned sports. Golf tournament proceeds help provide resources that our coaches and athletes need to be at the top of their game. We’re grateful for our sponsors, players, volunteers, and event Co-Chairs Stephen LaCoste and Arkalas Robinson. View the list of sponsors at www.stmsaints.com/giving/ special-events.

As I look back on my years of service on St. Martin’s Board of Trustees, I am filled with gratitude for our school, the board of trustees, and our entire community. As of July 1, 2024, my term as chair is complete and we welcome longtime board member Bruce Parkerson ’75, who will serve a two-year term as chair. In addition, we welcome five new members to the St. Martin’s board of trustees: Jennifer E. Adams ’92, Kate McCall Clarke ’79, Allison Johnston DeViney ’92, Barbara Farris ’94, and Alicia Vial ’89. These board members were elected to three-year terms.
I echo Bruce’s words in announcing these new members: “We could not be more thrilled to have such an esteemed group of leaders joining the board. These new board members are not only extremely accomplished individuals, they have also demonstrated incredible dedication and service to St. Martin’s in their unwavering support and volunteerism. We cannot wait to benefit from their perspectives and experience.”
These new trustees join our existing members as we build on the successes of the 2023-24 school year led by our new head of school, Whitney Drennan ’94. We look forward to St. Martin’s bright future as Whitney’s vision and leadership continues to shape and grow St. Martin’s into an even stronger institution. She and her team are well prepared to rise to any challenge facing independent schools today and create new opportunities.
I hope, as you’ve read through this issue of The Bell, you’ve enjoyed all the stories and photos of the individuals that make up our strong school community. Maybe you felt a surge of pride, as I do each time I attend a school event, find out about a new accolade a student received, or reconnect with my classmates.
I feel so fortunate to be involved in such a wonderful school and couldn’t be more excited for its future.
Sincerely,
Michael F. Nicoladis ’78 Chair of the Board of Trustees
