The 2019-20 edition of The Shield is in memory of Nolan Dewey, a beloved pillar of the St. Martin's community. A member of the food services staff for more than 24 years, Mr. Nolan's love for the St. Martin's community, compassion for others, and pride in his work were evident to us all. He was always friendly, warm, generous, and kind to generations of students and faculty.
Mr. Nolan was true to himself. He consistently held to his standards: not only for his work, but also for his interactions with people. The philosopher Will Durant wrote, "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." Mr. Nolan practiced excellence. We would do well to follow his example.
Representing an entire generation of StM Saints, William Thomas (PK) stands next to his brother, senior Jacob Thomas.
Upper, Middle, and Lower School buddies enjoyed working together to create craft projects in various Lower School classrooms.
The annual honoring of our patron saint, Martin of Tours, was dedicated to the memory of our community's beloved Mr Nolan Dewey. Students mobilized to raise and contribute over $3,000 to Cafe Reconcile in his name. The funds are used to help sponsor aspiring, at-risk youth seeking to work in the food industry.
Thomas Devall leads the acolytes, flying the dove as a symbol of the Holy Spirit. The red, orange, and yellow streamers often symbolize the tongues of fire associated with Pentecost.
Each of the divisions split off for competitive games between students and grades, like the fierce battle of musical chairs featured left.
Grandfriends Day is a special annual event inviting family to spend time with their grandchildren at school.
The day is filled with many memorable events including viewing student performances, experiencing classrooms, and participating in various activities. This year brought hundreds of visitors to campus to enjoy the festivities throughout the day.
After a hot breakfast in the morning, grandfriends were treated to musical performances in the Solomon Theater. Lower School students sang a variety of songs for the
The 7th grade band performed "May It Be" by Eithne Ni Braonain, Nicky Ryan, and Roma Ryan. The 8th grade performed "Black Orpheus" by Luiz Bonfa.
Students in the Upper School learn and grow by spending time in the classroom, on the athletic field, on stage, and most importantly as part of the community. Collaboration, innovation, character development, and student leadership are essential parts of the educational experience, and the students' work reflects these qualities.
While the sudden end to the on-campus experience put a pause to several traditions, the students enjoyed a number of annual activities, including Matriculation, Homecoming, St. Martin's Day, and the fall play. A new tradition was also born. The first Welcome Week, held in August of 2019, showcased the history of StM featuring class-building activities and spirited games between grades.
In spite of the obstacles this year, students demonstrated amazing growth and success in all avenues.
It's Homecoming! Every year alumni and parents return for the game that brings everyone together and celebrates the community that is StM.
The ladies of St. Martin's Homecoming Court are ready for the annual convertible ride around the track to meet their fathers on the field.
This delightfully funny Neil Simon comedy is set inside the Long Island mansion of a God-fearing tycoon named Joe Benjamin (Tanner Sykes). God's Favorite captures the imagination as it draws the audience inside the quirky antics of Joe and his family (Lana Day, Nie Lobrano, Bentley Boudreaux, and Nicholas Arensman) as they react to the many temptations, orchestrated by the devil by proxy of Sidney (Kennedy Derosin), to have Joe renounce his faith in his beloved God.
The wacky personalities portrayed in Simon's characters were arttully captured by our very own St. Martin's players Acting in a play which is heavily dependent on setting and staging, this St Martin ' s ensemble mastered the subtleties and innuendo designed by Simon to charm his audience
An eclectic group of sixth-graders arrives at the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee , each eager to win for very different reasons. Sweet and shy Olive brings only her best friend (the dictionary) with her to the bee; bold and hyperallergic speller William Bartee uses his "magic foot" to propel him to greatness; former champion Chip is struggling with his burgeoning puberty; easily distracted Leaf is unconvinced that he's smart enough to be a challenger; overachiever Marcy is disappointed by her consistent success; and politically aware Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre only wants to impress her moms. In hilarious, touching, and catchy songs, spellers reveals their hopes, struggles, and passions as they make their way through the competition. With an engaging, tuneful score by William Finn and a sweet, funny book by Rachel Sheinkin , The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee causes audiences to fall in love, both with the show itself and its "perspicacious," "jocular," and "effervescent" spellers .
Although this show never even got to Tech Week, the cast still was able to perform for parents and teachers . They amazed us all with how fast they could pull things together, both onstage and backstage, to make it performance-ready. This show will go down in history as one of the funniest shows no one got to see . It was pandemonium !
Senior Leadership Day is an annual tradition when members of the senior class fill the shoes of faculty and staff members for a day. Students teach classes, work in offices, and attend meetings, catching a glimpse of all the moving parts necessary to make the St. Martin's school and community operate.
This year, over 50 seniors took part in the day, organized and orchestrated by Dr. Julie Laskay.
"On Senior Leadership Day, other seniors and I were given a chance to work with the faculty and staff of St. Martin's on several matters.
"The most important thing that we all learned is that open and honest communication between students, faculty, and staff is the best way to ensure the long term success of St. Martin's."
-Andrew GaryJacob Thomas followed in the footsteps of his mother, art teacher Allison Thomas, with an eccentric style of dress to boot. Pryce Anthony spent the day in George Cottage, telling stories and bringing smiles to faces of a future graduating class of StM students.
"Shadowing Mrs . Davis was one of my favorite memories at StM. I never realized how busy the Advancement Office is until I spent the day working with them! Mrs Davis taught me all about fundraising, grant writing, and events such as the Gala. I loved learning about her job as well as many others who work in the office!"
Harry La got the unique experience of becoming Mr Stanley for the day, working in the Gibbs CID to help classes with various tools, maintaining equipment, and more.
"I had such a fun day. It gave me a new appreciation and understanding for teachers. The day was a lot harder than I expected it to be, even just making homemade ice cream with about 6 lower school classes. It was so fun seeing the amazement on the kids' faces as they made their own ice cream from scratch!"
~Malorie Saucier DIOne of the traditions of Senior Leadership Day is holding the end-of-day Leadership Meeting. Seniors are asked for their honest feedback about the operations of the school and how the St, Martin's experience and community as a whole can be improved for future classes.

Blake MakofksyThe Middle School years are filled with self-exploration and growth. We balance hard work and joy in everything we do. From celebrations for Dia de los Muertos to forming rock bands with classmates, students gain confidence to shine inside and outside the classroom.
As the school moved learning online due to the COVID- 19 crisis, Middle School students stayed connected with their teachers and their classmates through online classes, shared weekly advisory lunches, and even a virtual field day!
Five nights in North Carolina helpd kick off the culminating Middle School year for our 8th graders.
Students developed teamwork and leadership skills while testing their mettle in the mountains. Practice makes perfect; on large beams prepared the group to climb trees and walk ropes suspended in air.
Hiking was worth the effort to view the amazing scenery throughout the trip
Brisk mountain fog kept everyone cooled off while hiking in the Blue Ridge mountains .
aders were hype hite water raftin nch Broad River.
The kiddos experienced the exhilaration of rock climbing at Camp Kahdalea, giving their bodies quite the anaerobic workout in the process. Some of their teachers even joined in the fun!
What's a trek through nature without striking a pose in front of the most scenic of backdrops?
7th grade students traveled to Ocean Springs for a week of STEAM exploration, starting with the artwork of Walter Anderson. Students even got to interview his son, John Anderson, about life with his father.
The rest of the week was spent at the University of Southern Mississippi's Marine Education Center. Students tagged sharks, identified various native fish species, dissected invertebrates, went kayaking, and learned about beach and barrier island ecology and marine biology of the Mississipp i Sound.

Applying design thinking to civic engagement, students identified and researched challenges in Louisiana, prototyped legislative solutions, and created video public service announcements in support of their bills.
_, During the two-day session, all students participated, working as bill sponsors or co-sponsors, as members of the press or cabinet, or as governor or lieutenant -1!111,::i:-.....,J governor. This year was especially successful, with Ella Bozeman singing the national anthem and the election of Lia Beverly as governor Lia signed into law three bills passed by her classmates, and was joined by 20 other St. Martin's students in Youth Legislature's 2020 Hall of Fame . #CivicEngagement 69
Junior Achievement's BizTown is an annual field trip for the 5th and 6th graders. This field trip gives our students the opportunity to put their innovative and entrepreneurial skills to the test.
Students work together to run businesses, agree on executive decisions, and make choices as citizens for the betterment of their community They hone amazing skills like problem-solving and teamwork, and students always have a blast!
In October, St Martin ' s 6th graders took a retreat at Camp Abbey in Covington. The day included a doughnut relay challenge , a hike through the woods (and through a stream), games, and other activities for developing class unity.
Upon returning to campus, the students were joined by motivational speaker Laquita Brooks, who helped them create vision boards capturing their dreams and goals for the future.
The 5th grade class and others in the Middle School had opportunities to experience other cultures in a number of ways.
In class, students not only studied speaking, reading, and writing the Chinese language. They also learned about calligraphy, how to wrap gyoza dumplings, and then how to eat them with chopsticks. They even had a special guest student from China to help them learn!
Students also attended a special chapel service for Dfa de Muertos. Celebrating the Mexican tradition using ofrendas, students and faculty decorated the altars so the souls of the deceased would hear the prayers and comments directed to them.

Over sixty 5th graders, parents, and faculty attended a New Orleans Pelicans game at the Smoothie King Center against the Memphis Grizzlies.
The Pelicans gave everyone free Zion Williamson jerseys, which the kids wore with pride. Students got to go into the tunnel at halftime where they watched with excitement as players emerged for the third quarter.
The Pelicans won 139- l l l . At the end of the game, the StM group had a chance to go down on the court for a group picture.
Students and their families had a great time!
Lower School at St Martin's is a magical time when students start to learn many new concepts. In addition to studying their core subjects, students develop skills in logic through activities such as studying introductory programming, and practicing music through singing and various instrumentation.
While some exciting events planned for the Spring were unfortunately canceled when on-campus learning was suspended in March, many memories were captured earlier in the 2019-20 school year. From student performances in the theater to playing in "snow" on the playground, students were able to experience a variety of amazing experiences.
Mardi Gras is a special time of year for the greater New Orleans area, and the Lower School is no exception. Every year the students prepare diligently for a giant walking parade held the week before Fat Tuesday.
Parents, peers, and even some Middle School all vied for the little krewe members' best throws as they paraded around the playground courtyard. Some students wore masks and the signature green, purple, and gold colors. Others wore themed costumes.
Students had help with their preparations. Some of the grades had guest speakers from larger parade krewes, who gave practical advice as how to not give away all the throws at once. Fathers joined in to help construct wagon floats.
And , of course, many king cakes were devoured in the process As tradition dictates, whoever found the baby brought the next holiday treat!
Fourth graders had a busy ad exciting year at St Martin's. Mrs. Madden's Bookworm Club held many special events which made reading fun and encouraged the younger grades to enjoy books more often
As part of a study of Native American groups, fourth graders learned about the history of lacrosse from Head of Lower School , Ford Dieth. They were taught about how the game has evolved and its significance to the Iroquois people.
Fourth graders learned important new skills like place value, multiplication facts, equivalent fractions, and adding and subtracting decimals. But who says learning can't be fun? Mrs. Bourgeois and Mrs. Pendleton used games as instructional activities designed for students to practice throughout the year.
As the eventful year has come to a close, so has the fourth graders' time as Lower Schoolers. Next year they embark on a new academic journey into St. Martin's Middle School, where they will meet a new set of teachers and reunite with some older friends who were in their shoes a year ago.
Third graders had a delightful year, full of surprises The first morning of class they went into Ms. Weaver's class to find no desks or chairs but alternative seating and a wide-open classroom!
In true Saints fashion, the third graders served other students by helping George Cottage students navigate the book fair and write their wish lists
The third grade also spent time in Ms. Brierre's science class learning about biology and organisms invisible to the naked eye! Later in the year, they took a field trip to the Audubon Zoo to search for five different types of animals and learn about the habitats they lived in.
In late January, the students got to learn about the Chinese New Year from their classmate, Sinuo. They learned about how the holiday is celebrated differently between the United States and China followed by tasting Chinese sweet treats.
Next year will be an important one as these students rise to the 4th grade and lead the Lower School into the 2020-21 academic year!
The second grade had quite the year filled with many amazing experiences. Students took trips to the Audubon Aquarium and Butterfly Garden. They played with snow before the Christmas holidays. They even built traps to catch those sneaky little leprechauns!
Throughout the year they were visited by authors, musicians, and other special guests to learn about all the amazing things they could learn to do.
The study of space was a big part of second grade this year. Students read stories about astronauts and constellations, then wrote about what they would do if they were astronauts. In the STeaM Lab, students made straw rockets and tested how far they traveled. They made stomp rockets in science, focusing on the scientific method to test variables such as weight and angle of flight on distance.
The students began work on the annual second-grade tradition of campaigning for the LASPCA Unfortunately, the full campaign and accompanying video were cut short due to the pandemic.
The first grade focused on its French unit in preparation for Jour de France in the second trimester. The class studied different regions of France, along with the capital city of Paris. Students learned about the landmarks, food, and culture in France. They researched the paintings of many famous French artists and created paintings of their own.
Learning the French color words and number words were an important part of their unit. The children were also taught conversational French and songs. The unit culminated with the magnifique Jour de France performance in St. Martin's Solomon Theater in front of a captivated audience.
The students' performance included a choreographed number involving singing about french numbers and doing the can-can dance.
Popularized in the 1840s French music-halls, men and women both participated in this very physical activity with high kicks, splits, and even cartwheels! The dance is still performed today, though usually in a chorus line of female dancers.

Kindergarten students enjoyed a wide range of activities this year. From a hay ride tour of a pumpkin patch to working as elves in a Christmas workshop, students were engaged from beginning to end.
The students learned about holidays in other countries such as Mexico, Germany, and Israel. They even had a visit by Rabbi David Gerber from Congregation Gates of Prayer followed by latke treats made by two Kindergarten parents!
Kindergarten students learned about Greek mythology and visited eighth graders in their Western Civilization class, where the Middle Schoolers shared with kindergarten more information about Greek gods and goddesses.
Then the kindergarten class hosted its own Olympic games . Afterwards, students were more than happy to pose for pictures in their Greek garb.
In early February, kindergartners students celebrated World Read Aloud day with Upper School teachers and faculty participating by reading books of their choice.
This year mark the l 0th anniversary of the worldwide event Founded by non-profit organization LitWorld, World Read Aloud Day shares the joy of reading aloud and advocates for literacy as a fundamental human right.
It was a thrilling first year in the Lower School for the prekindergarteners rising up from the George Cottage. The youngest Lower School students learned about numbers, shapes, and colors in many wonderful ways.
In ST eaM Lab with Ms. Saucier, students dropped two primary colors into a container with vinegar and baking soda and watched them erupt into a different secondary color!
The pre-kindergarteners also spent a lot of time learning about holidays while practicing arts and crafts centered on their themes .
During Christmas, the students built gingerbread houses and sang along with kindergarten and first grade to "Crazy, Busy, Peaceful, Holy Night." In February, they received lanterns for the Chinese New Year.
In March, students were thrilled to build and decorate floats for Mardi Gras with their dads, grandfathers, and special friends for the Lower School's Krewe of Saints parade.
Children in George Cottage spend their days learning through play - in the classroom, on the playground, and at all places in between! We love being a part of the StM family and are always excited to participate in pep rallies, to man our annual lemonade stands for St Martin's Day, to cruise the sidewalks in our buggies, and to welcome our Middle and Upper School buddies. We love exploring our campus, from the Van Slate yard to Porter Field, and are lucky to have the best view of all as everyone passes back and forth in front of our windows and playground gates
Real-world project-based learning came in the form of helping to construct a bench from scratch; exchanging letters with international pen pals; making and delivering pizzas and beignets from the classroom pizza parlor and StM 's branch of Cafe du Monde; practicing the right way to brush teeth and care for babies; and for our littlest ones, mastering walking, talking, and self-feeding . Although our time together ended abruptly, it was a year of great successes for our youngest Saints!
The Saints had an amazing season this year. Our players honed their skills and strengthened their teamwork. Runners beat their personal bests. Rival teams were bested. Trophies were brought home from a long road through playoffs
Unfortunately, the majority of our spring sports were cut short due to the pandemic Baseball, softball , and track athletes barely began their season. Other sports like tennis and golf did not even start.
We know these players would have gone all out if given the opportunity
We look all look forward to the next time we can see our Saints shine their brightest from the field, to the court, to the pool, and beyond.
Together, we are Saints.

Nearly half of the team was made up of graduating seniors. The juniors will have big shoes to fill for next year, but the future is bright for this talented group of young men!
Coaches:
St. Martin's fielded a small but fierce varsity girls' soccer team for the 2019-20 Winter season. They played formidably against strong competition. Six seniors will be moving on from the team , leaving several juniors take charge of leadership and a sizable set of eager rising sophomores!

Baseball had a short season due to the pandemic, but the Saints were successful nonetheless. The team's seven seniors will depart this year but will be succeeded by a well-rounded group of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.
Softball also had a short season, due to the pandemic, but girls played their hardest and the team showed tremendous improvement this year.
