St. Monica’s Day—Who was Monica? The short answer is that she was the mother of St. Augustine of Hippo, one of the greatest theologians of the church. All that we know about Monica comes from Augustine’s spiritual autobiography, The Confessions of Saint Augustine. Monica was born in North Africa about 331 of Berber parents. She was a Christian, and made it her life’s work to bring her husband, Patricius, and her children, Augustine, Nazigius and Perpetua, to the Christian faith. She was ambitious for her eldest and gifted son, Augustine. He received an excellent education. He did not accept Christianity as a young person, embracing Manichaeism, then Neo-Platonism and living a wild life. He never married but lived with a woman for many years. They were the parents of a son. Monica prayed constantly for his conversion and wept over his sins. A sympathetic bishop once said to her, “Go now, I beg of you: it is not possible that the son of so many tears should perish.” Augustine left North Africa for a teaching position in Milan. It was there that he met and was baptized by Ambrose in 387. Monica had followed Augustine, against his wishes, to Italy. As she was preparing to return home, she fell ill. She died in Italy. Augustine was worried about her dying so far from home. She responded, “Nothing is far from God, and I need have no fear that he will not know
where to find me, when he comes to raise me to life at the end of the world.” Monica died at Ostia, the port city near Rome, in 387. In 1430, Monica’s remains were transferred from Ostia to Rome, to the Church of St. Augustine. She was proclaimed a saint by popular acclamation, as was the custom at that time, for her pious and holy life. St. Monica is the patron saint of married women, abuse victims, alcoholics, alcoholism, difficult marriages, disappointing children, homemakers, housewives, mothers, victims of adultery, victims of unfaithfulness, victims of verbal abuse, widows and wives.

The Upstairs Meets the Downstairs! Join us Sunday, May 7, 9:20 - 9:45
Do you love to sing, but having trouble getting up the staircase to sing with the choir? We will go over new hymns, communion music and contemporary praise songs for the month of May “I know how special mothers can be. But you know what I have discovered? I see my mother every day when I look in the mirror, and it is up to me to make her smile. I like that, so I always try to make her smile by doing the best I can each day. I hope she is proud. I know she must be, she always smiles back.” Author unknown St. Monica lost two lovely ladies recently, Jackie Wright and Juliana Horn. I have fond memories of both of them. Jackie and I frequently discussed health issues. She always made the best of all situations. Julianna and I held Tia Chia classes together. She was a great leader and I know I benefited from our time together. I enjoyed the company of both of them and smile to myself when I think of each. "STOP" look around your yard, spring flowers blooming. Build a bouquet to brighten your day! Whether you pick up a bouquet at the grocery store or a gather few blossoms from your yard, they not only brighten rooms, but spirits as well. Studies such as EVOLUTIONARY PSYCHOLOGY), found that flowers have a long-term, positive effect on mood. Some tips; pick a lightweight plastic vase or container rather than a heavy glass one. Use flowers with easy-to-cut stems, such as daisies, tulips, instead of roses and azaleas. Use spring-loaded scissors to make cutting easier. Cut stems at a 45-degree angle to vary heights and arrange in odd numbers. Fill container partially with water (lukewarm, not cold), carry to display spot and finish filling. Add a little bleach -less than a teaspoon per quart of water- to deter bacteria growth- drop in an aspirin tablet to provide nourishment. LOOK what you have created! What a wonderful day you will have. God Bless You. Nurse Sally

About Camp Happy Sands From the agency’s website
Our Charity of the Month for May is Camp Happy Sands. The mission of Camp Happy Sands is “to provide a cost-free day-camp experience and learning opportunities for children of lower income families, conducted in a faith based environment among a natural setting of God's creation.” Camp Happy Sands, a free summer day camp supporting children of low income and disadvantaged families within the greater Pensacola area, was founded in 1967. It was the “dream project” of two remarkable ladies, Corinne Jones & Ila Roose. Mrs. Roose who died in 2010 was the director of Camp Happy Sands for over 20 years. Mrs. Jones retired from the camp in 1984 and died in 1994. She dedicated her life to the children of the Pensacola Community. For more on the history of Camp Happy Sands, visit the website at www.camphappysands.com. The legacy of these two great women is stilled carried on today. In 2014, over 264 campers ranging in ages from 6 to 11 participated. During a typical day, the children participate in craft activities, guided nature walks, swimming, games and music. Guest speakers are invited to provide talks and demonstrations with child interaction on topics such as environmental stewardship, natural resources and the protection and understanding of wildlife and plants. You can help further the ministry of Camp Happy Sands by donating funds or items from the list below. May 14 A Mother’s Day Prayer Loving God, You wrap your arms around your people and show your everlasting love in the same way a mother loves her children. We are grateful for the love you have taught us through the mothers in our lives; our own mother who brought us into this world, the mothers of friends who have welcomed us into their homes and families, our grandmothers who took time for us, and the mother who have helped us even though we were not their children. Bless all the mothers of this world today. May they know the fullness of love they have shared and be blessed every day of their lives Amen
