Renewal and Immersion
It is not the matter of one season to build a ballet company. Within the past decade we have developed roots within our region, focused on the establishment of our company and on our artistic profile. Within the evolution as main choreographer of our company I get inspired by the great plots of the world literature as well as by reflections on the abyss of human psyche. My artistic interest may get attracted by basically everything, sometimes even a word is enough. In any way it is my intention as a choreo grapher to talk about the issues of our times, even if they are abstract, because creating means communicating. Our series with International guest choreographers follow the careful planning of an exciting and versatile repertory. It meanwhile includes the names of master choreographers as well as relevant and distinctive contemporary choreographers who continuously keep developing the universal language of dance. To invest in the choreographic talents within the own company should be the task of every committed ballet direction. Therefore we offer regularly a stage for the future generation of choreographers. Within the period that we are now beginning we aim to constantly develop further and we are looking very much forward to the new energies that are going to vitalize and enrich the house of the artists!
Goyo Montero Ballet Director and Main Choreographer
SEASON 2018/2019: bALLET STATE THEATRE NUREMBERG
A MIDSUMMERNIGHT’S DREAM Dance Piece by Goyo Montero Music by Owen Belton (new composition), Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Robert Schumann, Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms World Premiere: 15 December 2018, Opera
The collision of two worlds: After “Romeo and Juliet” and “Desde Otello” Goyo Montero focuses with his new creation on another classic by William Shakespeare: “A Midsummernight’s Dream”. Inspired by Goethe’s Ballad “Erlkönig” the core of his adaptation is the theme of the Lost Son. Further on Montero concentrates on the clash of extremes within Shakespeare’s cosmos. Wherein the realm of the fairies and spirits blends into the human world, the characters literally get lost, leaving civilization behind and exploring the animal world (first and foremost within themselves). Goyo Montero continues his intensive co-operation with Canadian composer Owen Belton, linking romantic and contemporary dimensions within an elaborate music concept.

KYLIAN / GOECKE / MONTERO Choreographies by Jiří Kylián, Marco Goecke and Goyo Montero (world premiere) Music by Steve Reich, Patti Smith, Owen Belton et al. Premiere: 13 April 2019
The triple ballet evening questions the issue of “Gender” on the platform and with the means of dance. After “Six dances” we are proud to present a second creation by Jiří Kylián. Goyo Montero creates a new work exclusively for male dancers and with “Thin Skin” we perform for the first time a piece by Marco Goecke. Jiří Kylián‘s “Falling Angels” (created in 1989 for the NDT), is a piece for eight female dancers and forms part of the famous “Black and White”- ballets by Kylián. The influence of rhythm and dynamic of ritual African music is vital for this creation. Steve Reich‘s music, with its minimalistic patterns has a strong impact on the enormous emotional strength of this dance piece. Music is also an important element in Marco Goecke‘s “Thin Skin” from 2015, created for NDT1. It is inspired by the music of Patti Smith and lives by its unique dance gestures, set within nume rous soli by dancers who appear to be covered by tattoos. Goyo Montero will round up the triple bill with a personal new creation set to the music by Owen Belton – combining both guest creations with an athletic, high-energy piece created for male dancers only.

EXQUISITE CORPSE – YOUNG CHOREOGRAPHERS OF bALLET NUREMbERG World Premiere: 15 June 2019, Schauspielhaus
The Series of “Exquisite Corpse” (first presented in 2011) is based on Goyo Montero’s conviction that a ballet director should provide his dancers with all means possible to support their de velopment into versatile personalities. Following the Surrealist game “Cadavre exquis” , at the beginning there is the experiment: The young choreographers chose motive, music and texts for their choreographies without knowing what their colleagues will present. From the individual mosaic pieces finally a homogenous ballet evening evolves, a mutual collage. The participating dancers also change sides and become responsible creative minds. Performance Days: 15, 20, 22, 26 June 2019
