• Customer Service Driven • Vertically Integrated • Innovative Products • Global Presence
ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES Since 1955 ND Industries has specialized in the development of innovative materials and processes which increase the safety and reliability of fastener assemblies. ND serves a global market with divisions across the continental U.S., Taiwan, and licensees around the world. ND’s core business revolves around the application of a wide variety of materials onto fasteners and assemblies to aid in functions such as locking, sealing, masking, lubricating, and noise and vibration dampening. ND also manufactures a line of bottled products under the Vibra-Tite® brand name for MRO and retail use.
From two base products in 1965 to currently over two hundred twenty, ND continues its tradition of cutting edge research and development with the regular introduction of unique materials along with competitive brand offsets.
ELECTROLOC® High strength encapsulated epoxy threadlocker for use in electrical systems where low halogen materials are necessary. Contains small micrometer microcaps which reduce material extrusion on installation.
THERMOSEAL™ A high temperature, high pressure thread sealant which withstands up to 40MPa. Offering thread locking breakaway torques greater than 20Nm and a maximum temperature of 428°F (220°C). Thermoseal is an extremely versatile product for challenging sealing conditions.
THERMOLOC® 1500 ND’s highest temperature chemical threadlocker. Initially performs like a vibration dampening compound. Once temperatures reach 750°F (400°C), a secondary activation begins, causing the fastener to be permanently locked in place. Tested to over 1500°F (850°C).
AUTHORIZED APPLICATOR Did you know that ND is an approved 3M applicator? Further proof why ND should be your one stop shop for pre-applied fasteners.
ND PATCH® HI-TEMP Highest temperature pre-applied nylon threadlocker in the industry. Unlike the competition, ND’s application process requires only 120°C, preventing plating damage. However, once crosslinked, it can withstand temps up to 260°C. Meets MIL-DTL-18240F / QPL-18240.
THREAD ARMOR® GP Prevents galvanic corrosion in assemblies with dissimilar metals, such as aluminum, and steel, by electrically isolating the fastener. Specially bonded to the fastener, ND Galvanic Patch is durable, chemical resistant, and non-conductive.
THREAD ARMOR® VC An advanced anti-galling and lubricating thread coating designed to extend the life of bolts up to 15 times while under intense torque and high friction loads. Helps to ensure consistent clamp load. Works well on stainless steel fasteners.
EPOXY-LOCK® NUTS This pre-applied threadlocker consists of separated epoxy hardener and expoxy resin. Upon fastener installation, the two materials mix and activate. When fully cured, EpoxyLock provides greater breakaway torque than conventional nylon fastener locking devices.
EXPAND-A-LOCK® A unique pre-applied microencapsulated expanding threadlocking & sealing compound. Increases in volume 20-50% on installation, penetrating the gaps in fastener threads typically unfilled by conventional threadlockers.

EXPAND-A-SLEEVE™ Extruded ND Mastics are pre-applied to fasteners (threaded or non-threaded), bound for e-cote cycles. Heat from the process causes the material to expand, sealing large leak paths between fastener and assembly.
SEALTEK™ An acrylic-based sealing material which is applied to the underhead of the fastener. SealTek’s robust seal replaces the need for O-rings, gaskets, or sealing washers.

2021 goes out in much the same way as 2020, with the pandemic and lockdowns still looming and supply chain issues like container prices and lead times continuing to batter the market. Perhaps the biggest surprise has been how little has changed during the course of the year, not least in terms of demand levels. Aside from all that, one of the more intriguing developments has been the smart and connected fasteners and tools area. OK, that isn’t something specific to 2021, but we at Torque Magazine have come across the topic more frequently over the past 12 months, particularly in relation to connections and fasteners in the field, rather than just on the production line. Now we are seeing the likes of Nord-Lock’s Load Sensing Tensioner, Atlas Copco’s SRB HA nutrunner tools that link to mobile devices and Hilti’s traceable fasteners for construction sites, to name a few examples, so Industry 4.0 is getting outdoors like never before. With fixings and fasteners everywhere, including garages, gardens, bicycles and rooves… is it a leap too far to expect error proofing or connection warnings in places like those? If decking screws that alert you when they are becoming corroded is a step too far for you, then – sticking with the topic of potential – there is the tool market, which is consistently underestimated in terms of size and potential, according to Serenco (see page 77). So, there are a few thoughts for you to mull over. Thanks for reading, see you in 2022.

SUPPLY CHAIN
RESILIENCE The Covid pandemic has had a dramatic impact on individuals, businesses and supply chains across the world. For those of us in the UK, or dealing with the UK, there have been the added issues created by Brexit. With much of the product sold in Europe being sourced from the Far East, the supply chain impacts have been acutely felt across the world of fasteners and fixings. Not only have we had to cope with lockdowns and other restrictions on our personal lives and businesses at home, the multiple impacts on our supply chains have created shortages and cost price increases that few of us would have predicted when we first heard of “a new strain of flu” in Wuhan. We have seen erratic demand patterns as businesses and whole economies shut and re-opened. Factories across the world were closed due to lockdowns and have struggled with Covid related labour shortages leading to reduced capacity and dramatically lengthening lead times. The issues in the global shipping market have received widespread press coverage. Port delays have affected turnaround times and overall capacity on routes out of Asia. Container availability has been an issue, leading to much higher costs and further lengthening lead times. Smaller players have struggled to get any shipping space at all, leading to shifting demand patterns as small importers turn to wholesalers for supply. We have all been managing these challenges, and whilst there have undoubtedly been shortages and problems, on the whole, it seems to me the industry has coped quite well. Many of the issues are ongoing, particularly the shipping challenges, long lead times and reduced manufacturing capacity in

the Far East. It would therefore seem we face an extended period of firefighting the disruption and maintaining the best supply possible. However, it is perhaps the right time to step back from the immediate day-to-day challenges and consider the bigger picture of the resilience of the extended Far East supply chain. Historically, holding substantial stock has allowed supply and demand variation to be accounted for and smooth supply to be maintained, but the extended challenges in shipping and production produced by Covid have pushed many stockholdings down to a point where substantial out of stocks are occurring.
// With much of the product sold in Europe being sourced from the Far East, the supply chain impacts have been acutely felt across the world of fasteners and fixings. // Near sourcing has been touted as the answer to global supply chain disruption, but product from these factories, which also were affected by Covid, is generally more expensive and would not have avoided disruption. So it seems to me that we are back to stockholding as the buffer against disruption. I am sure many businesses will be looking to increase their safety stock levels to try and guarantee availability. However, I suspect that once the pandemic has subsided, the short term drive for lowest cost will once again be the primary driver, and the issue of strategic supply chain reliance will fade from view… until the next pandemic!

Anti-dumping saga nears conclusion
s this magazine goes to press, the European Commission has signalled it will impose anti-dumping duties on specific fasteners from China. Following a lengthy trade investigation, a ‘Final Disclosure Document’ has been issued to interested parties, who have weeks to issue a response. As it stands, the European Commission intends to impose duties as follows: Three exporting companies will be subject to anti-dumping duties ranging from 23.9% to 51.5%. A lengthy list of other exporting companies will be subject to anti-dumping duties between 23.9% to 51.5%. All other companies will be subject to 89.9% anti-dumping duties. As previously hinted, it appears there will be no retrospective duties. The Final Disclosure Document, which Torque Magazine has had sight of, said: “One of the legal conditions under Article 10(4) of the basic Regulation is not met and therefore the duties should not be levied retroactively on the registered imports.” The announcement comes as the fastener supply chain is under considerable strain and higher costs, which are expected to last into much of 2022, if not longer.
A
Containers, shows and the supply chain dominate 2021 headlines video showing the container bottlenecks at ports was among the most popular stories on www.torqueexpo.com this year, as interest in supply chain disruption was at a high. The footage, taken by the US National Coastguard, illustrated the scale of the problem, with container ships queued up waiting to dock at the Port of Los Angeles. Stories tackling the container disbursement and prices dominated the headlines alongside the anti-dumping fastener investigation (see neighbouring story on this page).
A
Predictably, other supply chain stories also attracted plenty of attention in this year of disruption, including stories as China attempted to stabilise imports and exports, and the proposed intervention over shipping costs. Show postponements, including high profile Fastener Fair Stuttgart, also earned many views. Sign up to Torque Magazine newsletters to stay up to date at... www.www.torque-expo.com/subscribe

INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS
DEMET MUMCU
KALELILER Demet Mumcu from Turkey based Kaleliler discusses her day-to-day job and the importance of encouraging more women to join the fastener industry with Torque Magazine…
How did you get into the industry? I had been working as a Purchasing Manager and a Sales & Marketing Manager in the food and retail sector. Then 15 years ago, I met with Kaleliler and started to work as Export Manager. Whilst working for Kaleliler, I have experienced many parts of the fastener industry such as sales, production and technical details. What does your day-to-day job involve? I am now working as Kaleliler’s Assistant General Manager, but I am also directly managing the international sales team. My daily job involves managing the sales offers and orders with our sales and production teams by means of routine meetings and gaining feedback. If needed, I also contact clients. Outside of my daily routine, I also manage activities in the factory, coordinate all departments, give departments feedback and present those reports to our Board Members. Additionally, I work on company targets and strategies, investment plans and activities as well as the relations with suppliers and governments etc.

INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS
// Most of our engineers and white-collar staff are women. We believe in women and advise all companies to hire more women. //
Can you share some of your career highlights and milestones so far? I graduated from METU in Ankara, Engineering Faculty, Food Engineering Department in 1992 before working as a Marketing and Sales Manager, Category Purchasing Manager in the retail sector for about 10 years. After spending time in Italy and the USA, I returned to Turkey and began working for Kaleliler as an Export and Import Manager in 2006. I have been involved in all milestones experienced by the company, such as exporting to almost all European countries. What plans does the company have for the next 12 months? Our company is continuously improving its production and quality. Within 12 months, we plan to build a Hot Dip Galvanize Coating Line, all automatic and working environment friendly. We are also preparing to digitalise our production lines by adopting robots. This will be completed within 12 months. What is your favourite thing about the fastener industry? Fasteners are involved of every aspect of our lives and are needed by everyone. I think that if you are open to continuous improvement in your production and quality systems, there is no limit. You can always expand your business. That is my favourite thing about the fastener industry.
14
torque-expo.com
What do you think needs to be done to encourage more women to get involved in the fastener industry? We have to encourage young women to be a part of this industry. This can be achieved by hiring more female trainees. In our company, most of our engineers and white-collar staff are women. We believe in women and advise all companies to hire more women. Any final thoughts? I really like being a part of the fastener industry and I am very proud to be a part of our company’s journey in high quality fastener production. Additionally, Turkey has many talented engineers, really good quality steel manufacturers and has a great potential to be a partner for Europe due to its strategic location. www.kaleliler.com.tr

COVER PROFILE AMBROVIT
Ambrovit’s 6,300 metres² warehouse is 28 metres high with automation in management at picking and storage points
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS
CUSTOMER SERVICE Relentless research into new products, forging strong customer relationships, technology advances, expanded packaging options... much of Ambrovit’s activities and efforts come down to one factor – providing excellent customer service. Jonathon Harker interviews Ambrovit’s Quality Manager Mattia Sozzè... How’s business? Are sales on a similar level to pre-Covid in 2019? And how is the Italian market faring in 2021? The recovery of the industrial and artisanal activities brought the market back to a good level of sales with numbers similar to 2019. It must be said, however, that Ambrovit has maintained a practically constant level of sales, apart from some slight downturns at the most critical times. The Italian market is also responding well across the whole range of our products. Our customers, distributors and resellers increasingly believe in us, our services and our products.
Have any of the changes you introduced to handle Covid remain in place, eg virtual meetings with customers, more ecommerce, etc? Doing business in a pandemic moment like the one we experienced was not easy, but we faced it with determination. Virtual meetings have become a daily routine. Also of fundamental importance was the use of our virtual catalogue by our customers, a working tool that is complete in its listing of our products and comprehensive in its technical information. At the same time, however, we have maintained a constant relationship with our customers by all possible means.
Previously Ambrovit has been a regular exhibitor at international shows, including the UK. Are you keen to get back to seeing customers at shows? It is well known that trade fairs are an important time for meeting, communicating, sharing and comparing notes. Ambrovit has always believed in trade fairs and we will continue to do so. When it is possible, we will come back with a new look, where the commercial will merge with the human and there will be a return to new relationships between company and customers.
What projects are Ambrovit working on right now? Warehouse expansion? Ambrovit is always “in progress”, above all in order to increasingly improve the services provided to our customers through effective and up-to-date technology. Technology and specialised human resources have always been our “modus operandi”. We currently have a warehouse of about 6,300 metres² with a height of 28 metres, which allows us to have all our articles ready for delivery. Management is automated at all stages, both for picking and storage.

16-17 COVER PROFILE - Ambrovit TOR059 Nov 2021_LAW.qxp 22/11/2021 16:48 Page 2
Customers’ bespoke requirements have led Ambrovit to develop its packaging services
It seems that product advice is central to Ambrovit’s customer offering. Is that fair to say? Can you tell us a bit about Ambrovit’s experience and expertise? Rather than direct advice on our products, we always try to be innovative and proactive, with high-performance products in the various categories of use. Our research into new products is constant, as is our laboratory testing of the products themselves. Ambrovit, with decades of experience, knows that it can satisfy all working requirements in every sector. In the same way, we are able to meet the special requirements of our dealers. Ambrovit is known for timber screws and bolts – would you view those as your core products? Ambrovit is undoubtedly well known for its wood screws and bolts, but over the years it has also consolidated its range of products for carpentry, construction and plasterboard installation, and it would be too long to mention these fields of application in general terms, as it would take too long to list the different types of use for each sector. Both of the timber screws and bolts markets seem to have performed very well since Covid struck – what are your experiences of the levels of demand of timber screws and bolts in the last 18 months? As we have said, it is not only the “wood” sector that is one of our flagship products. The upturn in the market in general and in the construction sector in particular has, certainly, given a boost to renovation and refurbishment, and Ambrovit has been able to meet the growing demand for quality products and, above all, products ready for delivery.
Ambrovit is keen on developing new products to meet the requirements of its dealers
Back in 2019, you introduced a new packaging format, the ‘Special Box’ (Klein Paket), for the benefit of end users who did not require excessive quantities. Are bespoke packaging requirements becoming more important to your customers over time? Certainly, and here we come back to the subject of “customer services”. We are not always asked for large orders, but more frequently our customers also ask us for small orders for special requirements, and we could not be indifferent to a request that is useful to our dealers. We have therefore increased the preparation lines in order to be able to customise orders that are small but of great commercial value, if you think in terms of customer support and service.
// Ambrovit without presumption, but with pride, overcame one of the worst periods in business history and beyond with courage and determination, thanks to its cohesive and professional workforce. // What’s coming up next for Ambrovit? Important new projects are on the way for Ambrovit, but they are still in the planning stage. As mentioned, Ambrovit is striving for excellence in the present, but is also looking to the future with renewed enthusiasm. Ambrovit without presumption, but with pride, overcame one of the worst periods in business history and beyond with courage and determination, thanks to its cohesive and professional workforce. The relationships with our partners, suppliers and customers, that are the result of years of collaboration further consolidated during this period, are fundamental. www.ambrovit.com

TORQUE FOCUS C-PARTS, LOGISTICS & KANBAN
OVERCOME BOTTLENECKS SAFELY Readying for the next supply crisis is not just something for large companies to consider. Timely preparation and strategic cooperation with a C-parts specialist is what matters, no matter the company size, argues Ferdinand Gross... hen we had to look at partly empty supermarket shelves at the beginning of the pandemic, the security and resilience of supply chains suddenly entered public discussion. Now comes déjà vu in B2B, where the perfect storm is brewing and the supply of basic materials and C-parts threatens. Whether in the automotive, pharmaceutical or construction industries, there is currently hardly an industry that is not affected by delivery bottlenecks. Catch-up business from the last year of the Corona crisis as well as an improving economy in the USA and parts of Asia in combination with raw material bottlenecks and limited freight capacities have created a uniquely tense supply situation. For fear of production downtime, more and more companies are hoarding basic materials and components in large quantities. In such an environment, the sourcing of urgently needed parts proves to be extremely time-consuming and, with price increases of up to 300%, of course also an expensive nerve game. For more and more companies, the question arises how supply chains must be controlled and monitored in order to safely overcome bottlenecks.
W
SAFE SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT For Ferdinand Gross – one of Germany’s most experienced Cparts specialist with over 150 years of company history – the issue of security of supply has always been a central service. Behind the company’s Safe Supply Chain Management is an active risk management tool that anticipates potential bottlenecks at an early stage. Solution strategies are developed together with the customer. The cycle process starts with the customer-specific identification of C-parts at risk of bottlenecks. Strategic procurement options are then worked out and evaluated
Safe Supply Chain Management in 4 steps with Ferdinand Gross:

torque-expo.com
together with the customer. In the case of a single-source strategy, this can involve adapting supply contracts and stocking larger contingents, while in the case of a multi-source approach, the development and accreditation of new, ideally geographically dispersed, suppliers can be an option. After the implementation of the chosen strategy the process finally switches to monitoring. The ongoing risk monitoring is the basis for the Safe Supply Chain Management from Ferdinand Gross. PREREQUISITE > C-PARTS MANAGEMENT Such a holistic approach naturally requires a special kind of cooperation. Only if a C-parts dealer works closely with its customers, knows their required quantities and preferred delivery rhythms and, ideally, has an overview of their entire C-parts range, can they identify and evaluate emerging procurement risks and develop intelligent solutions for them. Therefore, the approach described is particularly suitable for Kanban customers. It is definitely not a question of company size. According to Thomas Erb, Managing Director of Ferdinand Gross, nowadays, thanks to highly automated and digitalised processes, efficient and reliable procurement solutions can also be developed for small companies with few employees. Getting ready for the next supply crisis is therefore not a question of size, but simply of timely preparation and strategic cooperation with a C-parts specialist. A holistic, neatly set up Kanban system with active Safe Supply Chain Management offers the best conditions. In quiet times it shows its efficiency and cost advantages and when things get stormy, it convinces with its greatest asset: safety! www.schrauben-gross.com

TORQUE FOCUS C-PARTS, LOGISTICS & KANBAN
“UNPARALLELED MANUFACTURING EFFICIENCIES” Global distributor and manufacturer Optimas was founded on the principle of efficiency and applies that ethos to its ongoing management and logistics of fasteners and C-Class components, so its manufacturer customers can focus on producing cutting-edge products… t’s no secret that navigating the complexities of sourcing, whether fasteners, or C-Class components, has been made all the more complex by the precarious state of the global supply chain. However, often not a primary consideration, lies the ongoing management and logistics of these parts. Although a typically low value commodity, in the case of fasteners, the vast array of styles can make them harder to manage, and in the very worst of scenarios, bring whole production lines to a grinding halt. Forming a huge part of many production builds, perhaps none more so than in automotive and the burgeoning EV sector, fasteners can be subject to varying rates of consumption, with excess stock negatively affecting cash flow. The ability to easily identify demand vs capacity and highlight potential production bottlenecks via Kanban is of the utmost importance. Tried-and-true methods, backed by advances in technology give customers greater foresight, demand planning and realtime access to accurate automated data – yielding significant production time and cost savings and ultimately providing unparalleled efficiencies. Optimas Solutions, a global distributor and manufacturer of fasteners, components and industrial supplies was founded around the same simple objective: efficiency; the term now a part of the company's slogan. Carved out of Anixter Fasteners in 2015, Optimas is a prime example of a company that has fully embraced the latest in Kanban technologies whilst still offering customers all the benefits of more traditional methods. “There are many different options for Kanban systems and methods of operating such systems. Optimas provides and supports all, including vending machines, RFID and remote weigh scale technology," says Martin Purvis MBE, Head of Operations (UK).

FULLY AUTOMATED C-PARTS MANAGEMENT
FOR THE LAST METRE IN MANUFACTURING The DIREKT RFID KANBAN system from Dresselhaus offers OEM manufacturers and mid-sized enterprises a smart solution for efficient and reliable C-parts management. n the age of Industry 4.0 there is increasing demand for individualised products together with the necessity for networked, fully automated industrial manufacturing processes. Flexible production lines that can quickly respond to changes are decisive to stay competitive. A missing bolt can literally bring the production process to a standstill. Such a Cpart is small, inconspicuous, inexpensive and yet indispensable because if it is not available at the right time in the process, this causes delays and unnecessary costs. In order to ensure reliable processes the required quantities of C-parts should always be available, when and where they are needed for production. An efficient supply chain with fully automated processes minimises significant process costs due to frequent ordering, therefore securing the company’s market position.
I
Reduction of inventories and costs A successful method of ensuring the supply of C-parts for production solely on the basis of the actual material requirements at the point where they are needed (i.e. using a pull instead of push principle) is Kanban (Japanese for “signboard”). The goal is the cost-optimised control of the value creation chain at every production stage. Invented in 1947 by the Toyota Motor Corporation, the Kanban system also became widespread in Europe and the USA in the 1970s. Decentralised procurement of the required production quantities throughout the value creation chain makes it possible to reduce local inventories of primary and intermediate products. This eliminates central purchase planning and extensive stockpiling. Production departments are responsible for their own supply, which gives them the versatility to respond quickly to shortterm changes.
When installing a Kanban system for modern C-parts management, many companies opt for support from an experienced partner such as Joseph Dresselhaus GmbH & Co. KG. Such partners must be able to do more than just supply DIN and standard parts. They also have to fill orders for a diverse range of products, including custom parts and specially engineered parts, as well as auxiliary and operating materials, and even ready-made bags and kits for assembly or spare parts supply. Each single product group has different logistics requirements. This underlines the importance of ensuring maximum availability of the required product – in the appropriate quantity and quality, and at the right time and place. Modern C-parts management with RFID KANBAN “The C-parts of our customers are our A-parts,” explains Axel Türke, manager of the Industrial OEM business unit at Dresselhaus. The Herford-based company, whose customers include major suppliers of the automotive industry, developed its RFID-supported DIREKT KANBAN system especially for Cparts management. The system is built on modular procurement and logistics concepts, and includes diverse product and service solutions. It controls the direct supply of its customers with small parts for production by means of RFID-supported container systems. Every container motion is detected by a special software and documented in the Dresselhaus DIREKT portal (shop.dresselhaus.de). The customer therefore continuously receives information about the status of his system, including real-time shelf visualisation. This data is used for planning of the required items, periodic optimisation of inventories, and updating of statistical data. The items are dispatched and delivered to the production line just in time.

The DIREKT controller, the basis of the DIREKT KANBAN system, features a large 15-inch touch display for convenient operation and can easily be retrofitted
Modular system “Our DIREKT RFID KANBAN system gives our customers a procurement solution in which the demand is automatically initiated by the motion sequences of the employees in production,” explains Stephan Pertschy, Manager of the business unit SME Industry & Digital Business at Dresselhaus. Central components are special DIREKT shelves with RFID mats, DIREKT containers and DIREKT labels, which are provided to the customer. The demand is determined by means of RFID boxes for empty containers (available in a steel or lightweight version), RFID shelf mats and RFID scanners. These devices monitor the containers on the basis of a passive RFID transponder, which transmits its data to the Dresselhaus ERP system. This means that each container automatically initiates the replenishment of supplies. If the production rate is high, with a high removal rate, this increases the frequency of replenishment. In the same manner, the supply of parts is automatically adjusted if production is reduced or interrupted. This method optimises ordering processes, prevents unnecessary stockpiling, reduces costly production areas, and lowers operating costs – without intervention on the part of the customer. The system now features new options for initiating replenishment orders: The DIREKT shelf scale initiates a fully automated order process if the weight drops below a defined value. An integrated LED indicates the status of the order and delivery process. Alternatively, an order can be initiated by pressing the DIREKT order button with an integrated RFID transponder. This option is ideal for items without an RFID label, which are stored separately on shelves since they are too big to fit in the standard containers. For flexibility, the button can be installed either in production or assembly and transmits a defined EAN code to the Dresselhaus portal.

The DIREKT glove, which is equipped with an integrated scanner, is connected to a mobile reader system. With each motion of the hand it reads the DIREKT labels and transmits the data to the Dresselhaus ERP system, which makes it ideal for fast and efficient recording of incoming goods. Another new feature is the DIREKT controller with a 15inch display. It is the basis of the DIREKT KANBAN system and was developed as an improvement to the RFID reader. Like the latter, it is fastened by means of a magnetic mount and can be used as a standalone solution. The new controller makes it very easy to convert existing RFID KANBAN systems to DIREKT KANBAN.

// The use of our system has enabled some of our customers to cut their warehousing costs in half. //
Dresselhaus has announced other upcoming innovations and enhancements to the system. “In the second half of 2021, in cooperation with our partner Tagltron, we will launch the DIREKT controller IoT, which will give our customers even more efficiency and cost-effectiveness in the management of their products,” says Pertschy. Features include an improved overview of order processes, even more control over the process, and higher system performance. Fewer wrong orders and supplier contacts The Dresselhaus DIREKT KANBAN system offers numerous advantages for manufacturing enterprises. For example, production downtime due to lack of parts is less frequent, since the production department can take care of replenishment without outside assistance. The employees of each product line are responsible for their own DIREKT shelf. The number of wrong orders and supplier contacts is also reduced, since Dresselhaus purchase the C-parts for its customers in a centralised process. In the DIREKT KANBAN system the containers, which are made of recyclable plastic, have a similar function to that of beverage cases. The empty DIREKT containers are scanned and the data is transmitted to the Dresselhaus ERP system. This initiates picking of a replenishment order and Dresselhaus delivers the containers with the required parts within the coordinated time frame. The customer can use the parts immediately, since they are delivered without packaging. This not only reduces waste within the company, but also the costs for warehousing of materials. “The use of our system has enabled some of our customers to cut their warehousing costs in half,” says Stephan Pertschy. Optimised freight and seasonal delivery cycles also reduce the CO2 footprint.

This makes Dresselhaus DIREKT KANBAN a sustainable and intelligent supply system for innovative enterprises. Added value partnership offers numerous benefits The Herford-based company supplies more than 5,000 wellknown companies with highly efficient, custom designed connecting elements and fastening products. To meet this demand, Dresselhaus maintains more than 85,000 pallet spaces within the group. With about 210,000 different products, including 25,000 standardised DIN items and Europe-wide delivery, Dresselhaus is among the market leaders in this sector. The company’s motto, “Added value that connects”, is not only confirmed by numerous quality certificates, but is also actively practiced by all of the company’s employees. “We will continue to focus on developing DIREKT RFID technologies for C-parts management in the future. After all, digitization of production processes and material supply systems is creating numerous new possibilities. At the same time we are seeing an increasing demand for individual networked solutions,” explains Axel Türke. The advantages to customers of a value-added partnership with Dresselhaus are obvious: they can focus on their core competences while benefiting from maximum supply and process reliability, even in turbulent times. Other advantages are streamlined, transparent processes, reduced costs and optimised production space. www.dresselhaus.de/dienstleistungen/kanban-dresselhaus-direkt

STAFA UNVEILS NEW
KANBAN SERVICE 12 months in the making, the Netherlands-headquartered global supplier of fasteners has been developing a brand new Kanban service to keep customers stocked when it matters… he last year Stafa has been very busy developing and fine-tuning its new Kanban / Two-Bin solution. Of course, a logistic solution like this needs to be streamlined to perfection to make sure the process is as efficient as possible. Efficiency is key in the firm’s new service. By using a state-of-the-art RFID scanner, Stafa customers will be able to order new stock instantly. The RFID scanner detects empty bins. These items are ordered and delivered within an agreed timeframe. The display in the RFID panel informs customers about the complete ordering process. From ordering to shipping, the touchscreen shows all different statuses of the ordered products which is extra valuable information on the workfloor. Of course, this information is also available via an online portal (PC, tablet, mobile with Android). The essence of the new Kanban service is to make sure Stafa’s customers are never out of stock when producing products, machinery or other equipment. This smart solution saves time, money and improves the workflow significantly. A unique feature is the fact that Kanban-system includes a large touchscreen which makes it possible for the employees in the warehouse to see all necessary information instantly. The screen is connected to an online portal which can also be accessed at the office via a web browser. This way the purchasing department also has insight in the whole process. To make sure that the delivery is always just-in-time, Stafa can set a specific delivery day/time which suits the customer. This way a customer always knows when he or she can expect their new supply of screws, nuts, bolts, threaded rods or other types of fasteners. Stafa says: “Our new Kanban service will be launched under a brand new name within the coming weeks. Multiple existing Dutch customers will adopt our service immediately. Are you interested in our new service? Feel free to contact Chris Körver (Manager Supply Systems) via korver@stafa.nl or contact us via telephone on: +31 (0)495 599 888.”

STREAMLINING THE E-MOBILITY SCALE-UP In October 2021, while petrol stations saw long queues, enquiries for electric vehicles (EVs) soared. The petrol shortage provided an additional nudge to accelerate the already growing consumer appetite for greener vehicles. Chris Billinge, Business Development Director at supply chain specialist TFC, shares his insights into how this growing market can achieve further production efficiencies and create more time to innovate… n September 2021, almost 33,000 pure electric cars were registered in the UK, setting a new monthly record and nearing figures for the whole year of 2019. And it’s not just cars — we can expect electric vans, trucks, buses, trains, motorcycles and golf buggies to become the norm in the coming decades. As the UK Government’s 2030 deadline for ending the manufacture of petrol and diesel cars draws closer, manufacturers are gearing up their electric vehicle production to see in a greener future.
I
Unlocking growth potential As these committed, collaborative and innovative businesses scale-up EV production, manufacturing leaders are looking for ways to unlock growth, streamline costs and build processes that are productive and profitable. Understandably, supply chain management is high on the agenda for British manufacturers as they look to secure the components and assemblies needed for their products.
In EV manufacturing, every component, no matter how small, has an important role to play. Take fasteners, for example. Though typically regarded as an unglamorous component, they are essential for holding an electric vehicle together throughout its lifetime. By considering their supply early, manufacturing managers can devise an effective way to deliver these essential components to the point of use, reducing the risk of stock-outs while minimising inventories on site. The good news is that e-mobility businesses don’t have to go it alone. There are great benefits to working with a supply chain partner that can help manage component supply and material flow. One approach, popular on many traditional automotive assembly lines, is adopting a vendor managed inventory (VMI) solution. This involves a third-party provider working with a manufacturing business to assess its unique needs, before proposing either a tailored or standard system and taking responsibility for supplying components to the point of use.
// In EV manufacturing, every component, no matter how small, has an important role to play. // A streamlined supply chain allows e-mobility companies to focus on developing transformative technologies to help achieve net zero emissions

headaches from supply chain personnel. Therefore, this frees them up to focus on tasks that add more value to the business. The VMI provider will work with you to achieve the key performance indicators (KPIs) your business is most driven towards. For example, TFC worked with one customer to supply PPE via vending technology, successfully reducing wastage by 20%, whilst meeting compliance guidelines. Alternatively, the VMI provider could work with you on sustainability, such as by introducing alternative packaging to meet ISO 14001 or other environmental standards. More time to innovate The result of a streamlined supply chain is more manufacturing hours in the day for production teams, as well as more cash flow available to invest in core areas of the businesses. This means e-mobility companies can focus on developing transformative technologies to help achieve net zero emissions, rather than resolving supply chain issues. TFC has a long history of supporting automotive manufacturers with highly successful inventory management solutions that deliver on-time production, smarter stockholding, a reduction in supply base and positive cash flow benefits For more information on VMI services, call 01435 866011 to speak to our experienced team or visit the TFC website. www.tfc.eu.com

ENORMOUS SHOOTING POWER, SPEED AND BATTERY CAPACITY The future is bright for compressed air devices, but with more powerful battery technology becoming available, innovative manufacturers like PREBENA are producing new, powerful and flexible power tool solutions. PREBENA’s new PNEUMATIC CORDLESS NAILER comes with PKT-HYBRID technology made by PREBENA for half-head and round-head nails up to 100 mm... ompletely independent of gas cartridge, power cord and hose, the new pneumatic cordless nailers by PREBENA can be used anywhere and offer maximum working freedom. With the patented cartridge nailer system PKT, short for PREBENA Kartuschentechnik, the company already had a mobile pneumatic cartridge system in its portfolio. This system is now combined with the powerful CAS battery technology – hence the name PKT-HYBRID. “Compressed air devices still make up the majority of our products,” says Werner Rücklinger, Managing Director of PREBENA. “Nevertheless, we see battery technology as the future of mobile working. We want to offer our customers both technologies - and that’s why we decided on the new PKTHYBRID line. And with a cross-manufacturer battery system such as CAS (Cordless Alliance System), our customers can now use even more machines and equipment that they need in their everyday work beyond fasteners.” In this respect the special tools for woodworking from Mafell in combination with the broad product range from Metabo, for example, are the perfect addition to the PREBENA range, says Rücklinger. “Let’s take a roofer: for fastening work such as removing substructures and support brackets, he takes a cordless hammer drill from Metabo. He cuts the roof battens with a cordless plunge saw from Mafell and then fastens them with a cordless nailer from PREBENA.”
C
PKT-HYBRID technology The new PKT-HYBRID range initially consists of two models, one round-head and one half-head strip nailer, equipped with a short or long magazine for nails up to 100 mm in length. This is all incorporated in a very compact design. The PKT-8-RKP100 is suitable for paper-bound round head strip nails Type RKP (with) up to 100 mm nail length. The PKT8-PR100 processes paper-bound half-head nails (D-head) Type PR also up to 100 mm nail length. There is a new type of magazine for round-headed nails – until now, these were only produced in plastic magazines – the nails are paper-bound and can be processed without leaving any residue.
// We see battery technology as the future of mobile working. // Both devices have enormous shooting power, speed and the necessary battery power to drive nails with a length between 65 and 100 millimetres and a shaft diameter of 2.8 to 3.1 millimetres at 1.5 shots per second. PREBENA’s pneumatic cordless nailers equipped with “Optiwear Technology” are wear-optimised and easy to maintain. In addition, they are weather-independent and can be used indoors (and outdoors). The devices are “Made in Germany” and easy to operate via the touch display. Adjustable single or contact triggering and the quick charging system enable fast work. Empty-shot safety, depth adjustment, belt hook and removable magazines are part of the standard equipment. Battery compressor VITAS 100-AKKU PREBENA’s new 18 volt battery compressor VITAS 100-AKKU from PREBENA is also operated with batteries from the manufacturer-independent battery system CAS (Cordless Alliance System). This means that pneumatic cartridge nailers and cordless compressors can be operated with the same batteries. The compact piston compressor with brushless motor is ideal for mobile use on the construction site. With a weight of 10 kg and a size of 330 x 310 x 390 mm, it is easy to transport

The PKT-8-RKP100 is suited to paper-bound round head strip nails (Type RKP) up to 100 mm in length and rubberised feet ensure safe use. The PREBENA VITAS 100-AKKU is oil-free and thus ensures minimal maintenance and service requirements. It offers a maximum pressure of 8 bar, which can be adjusted via a pressure reducer with manometer, suitable for each tool. A control panel with pressure gauges for boiler and outlet pressure, as well as a universal coupling for all common connection systems, guarantee easy operation. The battery compressor promises low energy consumption and a correspondingly long runtime, so that the performance is comparable to a cable device. CAS (Cordless Alliance System) – Over 280 machines – 25 brands The CAS combines a wide variety of manufacturers from different sectors under one “battery roof”: Within the system, tools, machines, chargers and battery packs are 100% compatible and can be combined in any way. More than 280 powerful battery products are available in the 18 volt class. Based on the powerful Metabo LiHD battery technology, CAS brings together the most diverse trades under one roof and thus offers professional users the freedom to work with standard and special products from various manufacturers in a mobile and flexible manner, far away from the power socket. EASY BLIND RIVET NUT SETTING WITH THE FIREBIRD PRO Blind rivet nuts are extremely practical and easy to use. The FireBird Pro riveting tool and CAS platform have just made this even more convenient, says GESIPA. BLIND RIVET NUTS – TRIPLE WINNERS Blind rivet nuts have three winning advantages. First, access to the workpiece is required from one side only; second, they are particularly suitable for creating a load-bearing and stable thread in very thin workpieces; and thirdly, they can also be used to connect two or more workpieces. Rivet nuts are also extremely easy to set as a thread can be created with just a few actions. Workers do not require any in-depth training other than a brief instruction session. For hollow profiles and components which can be accessed from one side only, setting blind rivet nuts is also often the only solution for creating a thread in thin or soft materials such as plastic.
// Blind rivet nuts are extremely easy to set as a thread can be created with just a few actions. And workers only require a brief instruction session. //
WHEN ARE BLIND RIVET NUTS THE SENSIBLE SOLUTION? Blind rivet nuts can be used in many different areas. They are used across all trades and industries where a strong, nonpermanent connection is required such as in the automotive, white goods, electronics, food, solar and HVAC sectors. RIVETING TOOLS FROM GESIPA – WITH CORDLESS ALLIANCE SYSTEM BATTERIES From the professionals, for the professionals – the cross-manufacturer Cordless Alliance System currently brings together 280 tools from 25 brands in one battery system, and this number is increasing. And with immediate effect, GESIPA is also supplying all battery-powered riveting tools from the Bird Pro series with the powerful CAS batteries. This includes blind riveting tools which feature easy use and ergonomic design. Fitted with a durable BLDC motor, the FireBird Pro tools screw the rivet nut on automatically. The working area is illuminated with pinpoint accuracy by the LED ring and the autoreverse function ensures the jaw assembly is returned to its initial position immediately after the setting process is complete. The tool is finally automatically unscrewed from the set rivet nut – for rapid and easy work.
Blind rivet nuts are a sensible option for a number of applications, including in the automotive, white goods, electronics, food, solar and HVAC sectors

THE SHOW MUST GO ON Few global trade shows have been able to take place lately, so Torque Magazine is bringing you the latest innovative new products and services – which in normal times would have been launched at an exhibition – in this special feature...
BRALO > OUR RANGE OF HIGH-STRENGTH RIVETS HAS GROWN WITH THE NEW G-BRA, ESTRUBOLT AND MULTILOCK RIVETS The G-BRA rivet is a higher strength version of the Hardlock and Hardgrip rivet, with a unique design in both its grooved mandrel and crimped head, both of which allow the head to be fully retained by mechanical locking, as well as providing greater tensile and shear strength, ideal for metal-to-metal applications. The Multilock rivet was developed for the customer's convenience, so no special nozzle is needed to expand the rivet, as it happens with the structural rivet. The new Multilock rivet is differentiated by a knurled shoulder on the shank, which provides good hole filling in all applications, including those with oversized holes, and thus provides greater resistance to vibrations. The Estrubolt rivet is the highest strength rivet on the market, especially designed for applications subjected to high loads, such as military vehicles, train carriages, bridges, vehicle suspension, solar trackers... Industries where a durable and highly reliable fastening is required, in addition to needing large rivets, with diameters from 6.4 to 19 mm to meet industry standards. The company’s innovation and new projects have helped BRALO, a Spanish multinational with more than forty years of experience, to collaborate with specialised industries, such as construction, renewable energy and automotive, always seeking to offer the best service and customised design for each type of application.

HEICO-LOCK® > COMBI-WASHERS THE INNOVATIVE BOLT SECURING DEVICE HeiCO-lOCK® combi-washers promise effortless bolt securing. With the HeiCO-lOCK® combi-washers, the German manufacturer HeiCO has introduced an innovative bolt securing product into the market that offers the user practical handling advantages, especially in demanding installation situations. like all products from the HeiCO-lOCK® series, the combiwashers are based on the wedge locking principle, in which the bolted connection is secured by maintaining the preload force at a constant high level. Due to the new type of tPe-ring with small tabs on the inside of the washers, which holds the single washers together as a pair, it is possible to preassemble the combi-washer to the bolt before installing the bolted connection. the combi-washer is simply held on to the bolt by the tabs, so that the user can concentrate on actually tightening the bolt. Particularly when used in hardto-reach areas or with overhead installations, the combi-washers are the simple and effortless way to secure bolted joints. the HeiCO-lOCK® combi-washers are available from m8 to m16 in steel and stainless steel with standard and enlarged diameters. the washers can be used with nearly all types of bolts and can be supplied on request preassembled with the suitable bolt. www.HEICO-GROUP.com T: +49 (0) 29 38 / 805 - 0 E: sales@heico-group.com

REYHER > INNOVATIVE COUNTER NUT WITH SELF-LOCKING EFFECT The CONU counter nut is a completely newly developed locking element (patent pending). Compared to conventional hexagon nuts this counter nut offers a variety of advantages depending on the application, such as reduced space requirements and flow resistance as well as a lower risk of injury. Due to its unique shape CONU fits into the countersink without any protrusion. The result: an almost flat surface. Thanks to its wedge effect, CONU does not require any additional securing elements, prevents self-loosening and is easy to install without counter tools, even one-handed. CONU convinces with its versatile potential applications and advantages. Due to its easy handling and the possibility to use it in almost all common materials the application extends to all branches and industries.
The key element of CONU is its construction and design: Due to the angle difference of nut and sink plus the added tooth system, the self-locking mechanism starts and gets stronger the further the nut is pulled into the mould. A selection of vibration tests, commonly known as Junker-test proved the preload force remains constant and that settling effects remain rather low at 15%. At market launch, CONU is available in two different versions in dimensions M6 to M16. This means that CONU can be used with screws of a stiffness grade 8.8 and 10.9. www.conu.de T: +49 40 85363-0 E: mail@reyher.de

DRIVING EFFICIENT CONNECTIONS Automotive fastener experts Nord-Lock, Spirol, Rotorclip & Accu share their expertise…
Nord-Lock > Wedge-Locking Wheel Nuts The loosening of wheel nuts is the main reason for wheel detachment – a problem that occurs more often than you might think. In the UK alone, there are up to 400 wheel detachments from heavy trucks every year. In the US, detached wheels result in about 20 accidents per week. The Nord-Lock RS wheel nuts are suitable for both on-road and off-road vehicles as well as construction and agricultural machinery (M16-M22x1.5 & 7/8”-11 BSF). The products use the same principle as the Nord-Lock wedge-locking system, using preload instead of friction. Every wheel nut comes permanently attached to a pair of Nord-Lock washers. The washers have cam faces on one side and serrations on the other. “When the wheel nut is tightened, it’s all about the friction coefficient on the lower washer,” explains Stephan Gruber, Sales Engineer with Nord-Lock. “The serrations here are embedded into the mating surface of the wheel rims. Movement is only possible across the cam faces, and any rotation of the wheel nut is blocked by the wedge effect of the cams.” For all vehicles, it’s important to be able to loosen the wheel nuts quickly and easily, for example in the case of tyre changes. Again, the product offers great benefits, according to Stephan Gruber. “When loosening the nut, you slide over the cam faces, which have a much lower coefficient of friction than the lower washer. They are even waxed to keep the opening torque as small as possible. Therefore, the nuts are easy to reuse.”
In 2019, Nord-Lock introduced an extended wheel nut range to cover all on- and off-road vehicles. The wheel nuts are now available in six sizes (M16-M24, including 7/8” BSF). EDEKA Südbayern, a pioneer in road safety, uses Nord-Lock wheel nuts on more than 300 vehicles. Turn to page 78 for more on The Safest Truck Fleet in Europe. www.nord-lock.com
SPIROL > Press-N-Lok™ Pin in Electric Vehicle Charging Handle CASE STUDY > An automotive manufacturer required a permanent fastener to secure two halves of the electric vehicle charging handle. PRIOR SOLUTION > Eight screws were used to secure the two outer housing components of a plastic charging handle for electric vehicles. The manufacturer decided they no longer wanted the device to be serviceable due to warranty issues related to consumer inflicted damages to internal components. Furthermore, the manufacturer had been experiencing relatively high scrap rates during assembly due to the screws stripping the plastic host. They were looking to replace the screws with permanent, tamper resistant fasteners that also supported lean manufacturing. CURRENT SOLUTION > SPIROL Engineering recommended replacing the conventional screws with SPIROL Series BP100 Press-N-Lok™ Pins. These Solid Pins have barbs that provide high retention in plastics, and they are designed to be concealed within the final product after the assembly process is complete.
42
torque-expo.com
The plastic housing could no longer be separated without visible damage to the charging handle. Therefore, the manufacturer eliminated warranty expenses and activities related to damaged internal electrical components. Additionally, the new electric vehicle charging handle had a sleek, luxurious appearance now that the fasteners were no longer visible. Press-N-Lok™ Pins are post-mould installed after the plastic has cooled in two stages. First, press the pins into one half of the plastic housing. Next, align the other half of the housing with the exposed pins and press into place. As the pins are pressed into the plastic, the barbs displace the plastic host material. After installation, the plastic naturally backfills behind the barbs to lock the pins in place. This simplified the assembly process for the manufacturer and eliminated scrap events associated with the installation of the screws. www.spirol.com

ROTORCLIP > High Performance Components Designed for Reliability, Safety & Efficiency For more than 60 years, Rotor Clip has supported the automotive industry with the highest quality circlips to ensure the reliability and safety of automotive designs and applications. As the industry rapidly evolves and cars become fully electrified, lighter, and more efficient, Rotor Clip is part of this innovation by engineering and manufacturing parts for electric car manufacturers worldwide. Rotor Clip circlips, spiral rings, wave springs and selfcompensating hose clamps are made from high-quality, highstrength materials and finishes, including stainless steel and several other speciality materials so they will withstand the harshest conditions including extreme temperatures and moisture. Parts that go into safety-critical applications must meet the highest standards for quality, reliability and cleanliness.
A single car produced today can have over 100 applications for this product. From mirrors to brakes, door locks to filters – Rotor Clip’s reliable, high-quality parts support leading automotive companies worldwide, highlighted in this electric motor using a balanced spiral ring with a self-locking feature. Because of the high RPM of the EV bearing, the self-locking
ring is used to resist expansion due to centrifugal force and keep it seated in its groove. These self-locking rings work by having a small tab that “locks” into an opposing slot. Without the self-locking feature, the ring could potentially grow in diameter whilst spinning, to the point that it would slip out of the groove, leading to a failure. The same spiral ring can also be statically balanced to reduce the vibration in the motor. Maximum static imbalance requirements dictated by the customer are achieved by removing
44
torque-expo.com
material with cut-out slots positioned opposite the ring’s gap. These slots centralise the ring’s centre of gravity by compensating for the material missing at the gap. Having a self-locking feature and balanced slots in the same spiral ring is not mutually exclusive. Some applications may just require a self-locking ring to keep the ring in the groove but not need it to be balanced. Other applications may need the ring to be balanced but not require self-locking. This condition is often found where housing rings are used in high-speed rotation applications. The ring may need to be balanced to reduce the vibration in the application, but the housing constrains the ring from growing outward due to centrifugal force. Spiral wound rings are ideal solutions to applications that need a custom solution as they can easily be changed to suit many needs: ring diameter, thickness, radial width, material type, removal provisions, tamper proof features, balance slots, self-locking features and much more are examples of features that be customised. In the same vehicle, other applications include things such as a bearing preload which may be using a wave spring. Rotor Clip’s wave springs can save up to 50% in axial space compared to conventional spring elements. They offer low spring rate and linear load-deflection-curve. When considering a spring for which is critical at the lowest axial working heights in such an application, wave springs do not negatively influence the efficiency and cruising range of EVs. This is due to a reduction of friction within the bearing when comparing them against conventional spring elements.
As automotive design engineers work to innovate and streamline their industry, Rotor Clip’s own team of dedicated engineers work with them to develop the most cost-effective and functional components for these unique applications. From prototype through to production Rotor Clip engineers work closely with potential customers to discuss the best solution to any application that could involve one of our products. Accu > New range of Sealing Screws and Tamper Proof Fasteners Leading UK precision component supplier Accu has recently added sealing screws and security fasteners to its standard ranges to further support their customer’s automotive engineering applications. Like many automotive industry customers, Doug Shelby Engineering often choose Accu’s marine grade stainless steel screws as high-quality replacements for OEM steel bolts, which are prone to rusting. Shelby’s team recently used A4 stainless torx button head screws for holding aerodynamic components on their track car, opting for Accu’s specialist chemical black oxide finish to blend in with the dark aesthetic of their vehicle. Accu’s new range of high-tech self-sealing screws, manufactured by ZAGO, an award-winning US based engineering company, will provide automotive engineers with a tried and tested solution for preventing unwanted ingress of liquids and gases into their vehicles.

Uniquely engineered with a groove under the head and fitted with a high-quality captive O-Ring, these fasteners create a 360° leak-proof seal, offering maximum protection against dirt and other contaminants, whilst also preventing fuel or oil leakage. ZAGO sealing components have been trusted by automotive engineers and OEMs for over 25 years, making them the ideal solution to protect engines, transmission assemblies and batteries, whilst ensuring optimal performance. Hafren Security Fasteners are now also available from Accu, with tamper proof components offered for both permanent and removable solutions. These fasteners are specifically designed with unconventional drive types to increase the difficulty of unwanted tampering, offering a deterrent against vandalism or theft.

For example, Accu’s clutch head enhanced security fasteners are chosen for use in securing licence plates to vehicles, acting as anti-theft screws. Whilst these screws are simple to install, requiring only a slotted screwdriver, they can only be operated (fastened) in a clockwise direction making them a one-way permanent fixing. As the unfastening of these screws requires a specialist security removal tool, they are a high security fastening solution favoured by both car manufacturers and the police for a range of automotive installations. 49-50 INTERVIEW Eurotec TOR059 Nov 2021_LAW.qxp 22/11/2021 15:10 Page 1
INTERVIEW EUROTEC
EUROTEC > A FULL SERVICE PARTNER FOR THE FASTENER INDUSTRY With work underway on a significant expansion of its manufacturing capacity at its Germany HQ, Eurotec has started foundational work for expansion, with clients all around the globe Managing Director Markus Rensburg and Global Sales Manager Joern Rueschenschmidt talks with Libby Sheldon... You’re starting foundational work for expansion? Corona showed that having a distribution network is fine but having your own production is even better, so without the capability of doing 40 million screws here in our facility in Germany, Covid-19 would have been a nightmare for us. But this has lead to the next steps in production where this will be massively increased. How did you find the coronavirus period? Last year in March when we had the first lockdown, nobody knew what to do or to expect. The entire market was impacted and started to freeze. Two to three weeks later, nothing really happened and then came ‘the big rush’ so people started ordering towards the end of April, and this up until August/September. The colleagues here were really working 200-300% harder in the storage facilities, in logistics, in the processing department. It developed into a massive rush of products. Many businesses began stockpiling because they didn’t know when more products would become available so we thought that there would be another decline in demand from August to October, but the demand stayed. This was a beneficial situation for us, having the warehouse and having our own production. We were one of the few companies that had products available, and this is still the case in 2021. Few truly have everything in stock - there are gaps developing for certain items, but we are still capable to deliver. We also feel the impact of the global logistics issues, so we have a large amount of production that happens in the facility
here in Germany, but we still have to import the products, while raw material for the production is sourced locally. Having the global situation of increasing shipping costs, increases in longer lead times, this has an impact. In addition, the anti-dumping duty which is imposed by the European Commission on fasteners made in China, means that long term planning is not possible. Corona is not the only thing to have impacted the industry, it’s also decisions made by the EU Commission. (Editor note: This interview took place before the EC announced its intention to impose duty). If you look at the anti-dumping situation, the people from the European Commission and people behind the decision are saying that its good because we have to go back to Europe and that there is more than enough capacity in Europe to supply and have everything done locally. This is correct for standard products such as bolt fasteners, metric fasteners etc but if you look at screws and special screws for timber and joinery construction, there aren’t enough companies who can do this in Europe. The capacities in Europe are far from sufficient to cover the market. To build up this capacity is just absolutely not possible in one year. We contacted around 80 companies and asked them if they could make a particular screw for us, most didn’t reply and the ones who did, said that they could not produce this product for us. There is a fastener industry in Europe, but not for timber screws. We don’t have the manufacturers who have the special machinery required to make certain products. The tricky thing

INTERVIEW EUROTEC
// We want to be the full-service partner in the entire industry of fasteners. //
Eurotec’s new machines can produce up to 900 screws per minute
is also the hardening process, if you look at the special timber screws, the hardening puts it all in a rack and this gets hardened whilst hanging. If you were to just pile these onto an escalator type machine, they would not all be equally treated. This is important because they have to be flexible but also have a certain hardness. They get hardened and hung on a rack and hardened, they are they quenched with oil, retempered again and then the hardening is done and sometimes a part of the long screws have to even be straightened by hand. Just this capacity of the hardening is difficult if you have less producers, less machinery etc. Additionally, only a few companies are capable of doing the surface treatments, the galvanizing, the nickel plating on those screws which is also due to technical requirements of the machinery. So again, whilst people think that fasteners are being manufactured and produced in Europe, this is correctbut not timber screws. Along with the anti-dumping issue, this is why we had decided to double our production space. We have made everything more flexible. We have changed our machinery and invested in special machines. We will be focusing on our main range of products as we don’t want to produce hundreds of different products. We have combined all of these factors so that we can produce with the highest possible amount of automation, which is the key to stay cost effective. What else can you tell us about the expansion? The new machines we have invested in can produce up to 900 screws per minute. The producing of the screws is also done using just one single machine: the wire goes in and the screws come out. This set up means we can produce a high volume of articles at a high speed, but also ensuring high quality. The expansion of production next door to the existing facility began in October. Expansion is quite a big task with the expansion of logistics in the warehouse etc but we have expanded before and we are prepared for these challenges. The expansion will allow Eurotec to guarantee customers the quality and delivery times they are accustomed to in the future and to cover the current demand experienced in the market. Additionally, the expansion will not only enhance Eurotec’s
50
torque-expo.com
ability as an independent manufacturer but will also create around 20 new jobs. The decision to expand production is expected to bring many benefits: The production processes will be improved and the planning horizon will be extended. Production facilities in China or Taiwan and the previous cooperation are therefore to be dispensed within the near future in order to meet customer requirements. This represents only the first expansion step. Further ones are planned in the coming years in order to be able to cover demand completely with in-house production. How is sustainability affecting the market? Climate-friendly building with wood continues to be an important topic – after all, wood as a raw material has a clear advantage over cement and concrete in terms of CO2 reduction. Nowadays, this material has clearly come to the fore again, particularly as a result of the climate debate. This can be clearly seen in the ever-increasing demand for professional fasteners. Solid wood construction and masstimber buildings built from CLT and GluLam vhave become more present and more important. In the last two years, Eurotec has also grown extensively in the field of timber engineering so if you look at the complete picture of having sustainable structures built in Europe made from timber, we always have the solutions but we were never entirely focused on this field. We have put a lot of effort into this and now we are being acknowledged for our work in this field. We have a dedicated sales force for timber engineering, and have the visibility in the market due to working with universities, engineers and architects. We work within the timber engineering market globally, not just locally. Any further thoughts for our readers? Eurotec would like to make itself as independent as possible from third parties and continue to be the reliable specialist for fastening technology in the future. We are looking to work with more architects and engineers globally and are talking to sales people in the specialised fields that we want to attract. We want to be the full-service partner in the entire industry of fasteners. www.eurotec.team

GROWTH, INVESTMENT &
DEVELOPMENT The challenges faced by businesses operating within the fastener and fixings industry over the past 12 months have been widely reported. Owlett-Jaton, the UK’s largest fastener and fixings wholesaler, has been no exception. Nevertheless, 2021 has been a year of growth, investment, development and future planning for the leading supplier, as it explains here… eeping up with the demands of the marketplace and industry developments is something that Owlett-Jaton prides itself on. Through continuous development, its product portfolio continues to grow year-on-year. In the last 12 months alone it has introduced hundreds of products to their range. The year started with a milestone, with JCP, the specialist fixings division of Owlett-Jaton, celebrating its 20th birthday. Established in 2001, JCP has grown in stature with an everincreasing range of high-quality fixing products, backed up by extensive technical support. With record sales, it is now one of the UK’s largest fixings brands. Additions to the JCP fixings range have included large ranges of stainless steel throughbolts and heavy-duty anchors, as well as a market-leading ETA certificated fire stop system comprising a silicone sealant/adhesive and expanding foam. Owlett-Jaton’s newest brand Jaton Riveting Products (JRP) has also seen record sales. 2021 saw a major expansion to the range with new lines added to the structural and specialist ranges, including bulb and hem structural rivets and load spread with washer specialist rivets. JRP also introduced a range of black and white dome head and coloured multigrip rivets, all of which have proved to be hugely popular with both new and existing customers. New products to expand the range even further are on 1947202 2 the way, and customers can expect to see more exciting additions throughout 2022.

March 2021 saw the launch of its brand new trading website www.owlett-jaton.com. Following significant investment and development, the website has been embraced by customers, with web sales growing by over 50%. Consolidating several websites into one platform, the website features an online catalogue of over 17,000 stocked products and provides even more product information than ever before. With continuous development planned for the site, customers can expect to see new features, improved product information and additional products throughout 2022. The new website came at just the right time too. As the industry started to adapt to a new way of working, distributors and merchants who were notoriously traditional in their trading methods began to look to their own digital presence, and Owlett-Jaton were pleased to support their changing strategies. The production of thirteen installation videos for some of the most popular JCP products has proven invaluable. Sharing these videos with their customers has meant that distributors can support their customers, and end-users have the guidance needed to ensure correct installation. Health and safety, wellbeing and employee satisfaction always tops the agenda for Owlett-Jaton. Investing in its workforce through training and development, workplace improvements, and other initiatives has remained a priority, even through the pandemic. In October, it welcomed its employees into a brand new purpose-built welfare area and locker rooms. The additional space and new facilities allow for improved comfort at break times and can accommodate up to sixty-five people whilst adhering to social distancing guidelines. As we all start to look towards a New Year, Owlett-Jaton continues to have a positive outlook. In 2022, it celebrates a special milestone, their 75th anniversary, and plan to do it in style. Keep an eye out for lots of exciting developments coming soon!

ON COURSE FOR A RECORD YEAR With demand continuing to be at a high for The Insert Company (UK), the firm is set to record another strong performance by year end. Torque Magazine speaks with Sales Director Kevin Broome… y the end of this year we will have seen record numbers,” The Insert Company (UK) Limited’s Sales Director Kevin Broome tells Torque Magazine. “Sales are flying.” The Wednesbury, West Midlands-located business has historically been a consistent grower over the past decade or so, with sales rising year-on-year. Founded in 2003, the firm carries big stocks and is perhaps best known for specialising in a wide range of threaded inserts, including zinc alloy, brass, steel and stainless steel, for a wide range of applications in wood, plastic and metal. The firm also provides special parts based on specifications if required, with extensive experience, knowledge and connections in the fastener business. The Insert Company (UK) also supplies furniture connectors and has customers in a wide range of sectors – memorably including clients like the Nightingale Hospitals and medical ventilator projects during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“B
Business has been particularly strong since then, but despite being on course for another record year, the firm has had to cope with the kind of supply chain issues that have battered just about every supplier in just about every sector. The supply chain has been hit by a number of different elements that have together contrived to make life hard for importers and suppliers. There’s the disbursement of containers, the rise in raw material costs, the huge pandemic-related demand levels and even the Ever Given’s exploits in the Suez Canal earlier this year. Broome rues: “The lead times you get quoted are long at the moment and some product types are harder to get hold of. We’re seeing massive shortages on items like brass inserts, for example.” That significant growth in demand is nevertheless buoying sales, whether for those wishing to increase stocks in their warehouse or to service increased project demand: “We are seeing some big orders come in at the moment.”
// Sales are flying. We are seeing some big orders coming in at the moment. // Teamwork The Insert Company (UK) team is compact and close knit, and Broome speaks on the importance of taking care of employees. He says: “You have to looking after the people that work here. It pays back – if you look after them then they will give their best. They look after you in return.” Whether it is that ethos of taking care of the team, or its growing reputation that sees big projects come increasingly to its door, or its can-do attitude… or a combination of all the above that is behind its success, the Insert Company (UK) will no doubt be planning to replicate its strong 2021 performance and make 2022 another record yearout more about becoming an authorised distributor. www.theinsertcompany.com

56-57 INTERVIEW HSI TOR059 Nov 2021_LAW.qxp 22/11/2021 15:13 Page 1
INTERVIEW HSI
Best known for its shelf and POS presentations, HSI has expanded its services with technical items
DEVELOPING A PRESENTATION
PIONEER The newly acquired HSI has long been famed for its POS and shelf presentations. Now the firm is expanding its capabilities, with initiative from its new owners, to grow share and business for itself and its customers. HSI COO and Procurement Chief Michael Blome speaks with Jonathon Harker… ow many euros can a shelf of products earn for my business? That’s the question retailers and specialists ask HSI, which has forged a reputation as an expert in shelf presentation that works hard for its customers. Over 100 years old, the DIY-focused HSI (Hermann Schwerter Iserlohn) stocks 30,000 different items, offering everything from a door stopper to screws that build decks. This ‘one-stop-shop’ is mainly focused on Germany (particularly the south with its strong DIY and timber market) as well as some business in France and Switzerland. Famed for offering well-presented shelves, HSI’s shelf concepts are designed to maximise the profitability of the space and value per metre, with clever concepts that explain products to end customers, through information imagery, colour codes and sometimes even demo areas. In early 2020, HSI was acquired by Markus Rensburg and Gregor Mamys, two experienced managers from the construction sector, with a plan to develop the business and grow market share. HSI’s strengths include cross selling and there is a huge capacity for growing sales: “It’s a solution seller and quantity seller of shelves. HSI is very flexible and has everything to fill gaps in the range,” HSI COO Michael Blome tells Torque Magazine.

Acquisition during the pandemic It will not have escaped our readers’ attention that early 2020 was notable for the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. So, the early days of ownership were tricky, to say the least, particularly as the business was reliant on DIY and hardware shops which were largely closed during lockdown. “Bavaria was one of the regions that kept the shops closed the longest. The carpenter carried on working, but HSI was bound to the shops and many were shut,” says HSI. One of the initiatives planned post-acquisition was to ready the firm for e-commerce, which was made more pertinent by the pandemic: “Nobody knows if the market will be hit by another lockdown which would shut down those smaller shops again. If you are not prepared for it, it’s not the best thing.” Having an online shop option in the event of another lockdown meant HSI needed to get all 30,000 of its items ready for ecommerce and modern ERP systems. While a hugely lengthy process, the project also meant HSI now has a huge amount of product data to supply other shop customers if needed. HSI notes: “We need to take care with an online shop and be mindful of our customers. A shop needs prices higher than those for the customers so there is no conflict. It’s a delicate balance, but we won’t hurt our client base.”
56-57 INTERVIEW HSI TOR059 Nov 2021_LAW.qxp 22/11/2021 15:13 Page 2
“You need to be capable of e-commerce, in a pandemic or not. It helps generate turnover and churn old stock. Having online sales, professional sales and shelf sales – those are three pillars to generate sales and if you lose one of them, like we did in the pandemic, then the other are there for the safety of the company.” Three pillars Those aforementioned three pillars of sales include ‘professional sales”. The HSI COO explains: “To have HSI be not only the partner who has everything, but also the partner who can support you, can consult you and explain… that’s a change. There will be our traditional shelf sales, but there will also be the more professional technical sales supporting the products that need explanation.” It’s here that HSI will be able to lean from its owners and managing directors and the sister company. HSI was born as a problem solver, a one-stop-shop with 30,000 products in the range. HSI’s sister company is a fastening solution specialist, with a range closer to 3,000 items. The separate companies have very different sales philosophies and procurement and types of customers, but there are things each can learn from the other. “We have brought some technical items to HSI,” says Blome. “Shelf sales remain core, but now we can also be the partner that speaks to the client, to be more solution based and not solely based on quantity of the product. We need both sides. We really want to elevate or leave the traditional HSI items that work so well, but we want to have this second leg. We need to be prepared if we have another lockdown. That’s what we learned from the covid lockdown.” “What the farmer doesn’t know, he doesn’t eat” Part of the development plans included revamping the look, logo and identity of HSI. The pandemic complicated some aspects of this process too, explains Brome, himself a long standing HSI employee “There’s a German saying, ‘what the farmer doesn’t know, he doesn’t eat’. People are often nervous about change. The pandemic forced a lot of change on top of the changes we were bringing in, so it was difficult, but it’s for the greater good of the company and it will benefit HSI. “The idea was to do the change slowly, but circumstances meant they had to go faster. What we’ve been doing is helping HSI get to the next level and exist well into the future.”
Shelf systems will always be core for HSI: “The changes are ways to add value to the HSI package”
It’s gratifying to see the changes adopted: “The teams start to see the successes of their colleagues. Then they ask them, how did you sell it? Then they replicate it and recognise that it works.” “More than just filling a shelf” The new owners believe there are a lot of opportunities to expand HSI’s business, even without taking share from competitors. HSI says: “That was the reason we decided to buy. If there is no chance to bring it forward them why buy it? Growing market share was our target and the pandemic interrupted that. We have a lot of new items but no chance to present them to the customer. That’s why we need a year of normal working to present the new HSI, the new items, then we have a good chance to get a better turnover.” The pandemic did have at least one upside, however, not least the expansion in DIY demand, HSI’s core market. “It has increased massively. People were spending more time at home, maybe the holiday budget was used for DIY instead… but it wasn’t the idea when we bought HSI!”
Clever shelf POS helps customers find the right product without the help of busy shop staff
Developing a pioneer HSI is skilled at shelf POS and presentations where you don’t need the help of shop staff to find the item you need. “It’s easy to find the right screw or fastener. There are colour codes, pictures… it makes it easy for the shops. Even things like a built-in rod where you can test out a special locking nut… it’s practical, physical and clearly explained. “We still want to be the ones with the best presentation in the market, with the best sales per square metre on the shelves. This is always the discussion with customers; “how many euros do we have on the shelf?’ They say, if I give you three metres of shelf, what is my turnover? HSI has been a pioneer in this area. Shelf systems will always be HSI’s core business, says Blome: “The changes are just ways to add the value that HSI brings in to guarantee its future and have more opportunities. The shelve systems are the heart of HSI. The online shop and technical and solution items will help HSI get to the next level, to have more channels, more clients and more turnover for us and our customers.” www.schwerter.de

“A NEW STANDARD FOR THE MARKET” G-Grip is a clever new T304 stainless steel lockbolt system that promises to save on costs and on time, while also reducing the inventory needed of standard parts. Goebel explains the benefits of the G-Grip system…
n applications where an extensive grip range is needed and a consistent flush pin break to the collar is favourable, Goebel has devised the G-Grip, pitched as a new and improved standard in the market. Crucially, the G-Grip can replace up to 14 sizes of the classic 6-groove locking fastener systems, in steel, stainless steel or aluminium. As with all Goebel engineered fasteners, the G-grip is highly resistant to corrosion and vibration. It features a flush breaking pin, a multi-grip design, an efficient installation process and it reduces the inventory needed of standard parts. This exciting new development can replace ordinary bolts and nuts with all the accompanying advantages of time and cost savings.
I
IN STOCK G-Grip is a patented product, so Goebel Group has full IP rights on this innovation. The ISO 9001:2015 accredited company has a production capacity of nine million pins and nine million collars per month. What’s more, DIBt and ETA approval will be available soon on the G-Grip, Goebel tells Torque Magazine. The G-Grip is already proving popular with Goebel customers across a number of sectors, including the truck & trailer industry, agriculture industry, food industry, military industry and automotive industry, among others.

EFFICIENCY, STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY & CONSISTENT CLAMPING FORCES One of the key advantages of a multi-grip part is improved efficiency in terms of costs, inventory and job site performance through simplified installation. The G-Grip’s extensive grip range and various sizes can replace up to 14 sizes of the classic 6-groove locking fastener system.
// The G-Grip is already proving popular with Goebel customers across a number of sectors. // G-Grip collar parts and pin are manufactured with polished T304 stainless steel material and on request the pin can be coated with chrome or nickel plating. These newly developed parts therefore offer a high corrosion resistant solution. Stainless steel is famed for its industrial application, particularly in harsh environments, so there are lower maintenance costs and increased structural integrity.

During the installation process the collar is swagged onto the pin and locks in place via the grooves. How does the G-Grip offer vibration resistance? During the installation process the collar is swagged onto the pin and locks in place via the grooves. The locking feature guarantees consistent clamping forces, shearing and tensile strength once installed, says Goebel, adding that once the parts are installed, you can be sure the application is secure. Easy installation with the right tools As stainless steel is ductile, Goebel was faced with a significant challenge to ensure consistent flush breaking every time. The firm overcame the issue with a patented design which always breaks flush for smooth, safe and simple installation every time. Goebel offers a comprehensive range of installation tools, ranging from hand tools to cordless battery tools and pneumatic air tools. The best tool for the job for the application depends on frequency of use, explains Goebel. G-Grip lockbolts are installed within seconds (see below) and depending on the tool used can be set up to 1,200 pieces per hour. It’s easy for
Corrosion resistance: G-Grip pin and collar parts are made of polished T304 stainless steel (right) the operator to identify a solid flush installation and continue working efficiently, adds the firm. Installation is easier too, thanks to the reduced inventory required. As the G-Grip extensive grip range and various sizes can replace up to 14 sizes of the classic 6-groove locking fastener system, there’s less need to stock multiple parts for various sizes. At a time when cost efficient inventory systems are vital, G-Grips can save time, space and money through inventory simplification. G-Grips are available from stock from Goebel, and PPAP Level 3 documentation can be agreed/provided if required. The firm is currently seeking more authorised distributors to enlarge its worldwide network for the G-Grips. Training is offered (in-house or online) along with support and sales materials, displays, catalogues, samples and full support. That’s how we get amazing results from such a small operation. “We react to customer orders quickly and we have a lot of steel to back it up.” While steel supplies are indeed one of the many challenges facing the industry in 2021, C Adams is benefiting from some long-standing supply relationships. Parkes believes C Adams was one of the first to import steel from the Far East and its long-term relationships have paid off, helping ensure supplies in these tricky times. Sticking to its specialism has also paid dividends for the firm, says Parkes: “We are not a ‘pile it high’ firm. We are a bit different and we are proud of it.

C Adams manufactures and stocks threaded bar up to M64 diameter along with the testing certificate. That’s a service that is getting more popular. It gives us confidence when you test the product yourself and see the results on the steel you are making parts from and ultimately will be used on safety critical infrastructure. The test of the business is ensuring all products leaving our warehouse meet the correct standard. The company is also ISO 9001 and 14001 registered.” The lab is equipped with hardness and tensile testing machines and thread gauges up to M90 diameter. Studs and nuts are all batch identified, fully traceable and can be stamped with whatever customers want or with the CA mark. Knowledge and expertise at C Adams is at the level where in-house engineers can also perform repairs on machines on the floor when needed. History: In the blood Naturally Nick Parkes’ background with the family firm goes back a number of years. His grandfather, Edward G Parkes, built the current unit in the 1960s, while the business itself dates all the way back to 1806, when it was founded by Charles Adams himself.

Mr Adams was originally a saddle maker in the Black Country. Over the decades, the company diversified into leather belt making and even began to supply oil in the 20th Century. Parkes’ grandfather took on the business in 1963 and in ’67 moved the firm to its current home in Wednesbury. In the 1970s, the firm’s nuts and bolts business took off and in the ‘80s began machining. Parkes adds: “I used to come in after school and answer the phone. I was always interested in the mechanics of the operation.”
in terms of delivery have increased over the years, but when you go the extra mile they really appreciate it, says Parkes. Machines are constantly running, he adds: “We can make a lot in a day and we can react quickly if required to.” Looking ahead, the firm wants to expand, with adjacent land already in the company’s ownership. “We’re a dynamic company, backed with hard work and effort. The machine shop can be a dirty place, but the product is always quality. We are proud to have our name on it.” www.c-adams.co.uk
// Involved in many significant infrastructure projects over the past decades, C Adams knows quality is key. // Despite that longevity in the business, there’s still plenty of potential for the business to develop, adds Parkes, not least with new merchant customers that are as yet unfamiliar with the C Adams name. “We want to extend our merchants business and develop our exports – we could do more.” C Adams was open throughout the Covid lockdowns, initially with skeleton staff for a short while, before ramping back up to normal levels. Now, things are busy for the company. Despite container issues now persisting for 12 months, the supply relationships mentioned earlier are helping provide a constant flow of materials and work. Torque tools are becoming increasingly integrated in the digital working environment
DIGITAL TOOLS I
ndustry 4.0 solutions are playing an increasingly decisive role when it comes to making business processes more efficient. Anything that can be computerised will be computerised. This megatrend is already having a major impact on the development and use of hand tools. Torque tools, measuring and testing units will become increasingly integrated in the digital working environment and will communicate with one another. This does not only apply to large industrial enterprises, but is becoming more and more relevant for medium sized and smaller companies. Stahlwille has already positioned itself now to respond to these developments strategically and in the long term. The result is DAPTIQ, a range of integration-enabled solutions for use in Industry 4.0 environments that is being continuously expanded and developed. The focus is on minimising setup costs, reducing process costs and, in this way, accelerating processes while improving transparency.
Real-time response Using DAPTIQ solutions enables real-time responses to changes in production processes and in maintenance. Efficiency and process capability can be significantly improved but above all, secure automatic logging is guaranteed. DAPTIQ products can not only communicate with each other, but also with other systems in the specific working environment. MANOSKOP 766 DAPTIQ – full integration in Industry 4.0 environments The electromechanical angle-controlled torque wrench MANOSKOP 766 DAPTIQ can exchange data bidirectionally and receive and execute instructions. Users are freed from timeconsuming routines and training times are shortened. Human error and, as a result, the error rate are reduced. Last but not least, interaction with the customer's centralised systems means automatic logging of tightening data is a simple matter. This tool is the only one on the market that works electromechanically: it measures digitally and can be networked wirelessly. The wrench signals three times whether the tightening operation has been carried out correctly and the specified target torque has been reached – by means of an LED traffic light system, the digital display and the familiar click. The system also detects whether fasteners have been overlooked or tightened twice. Error messages cannot be ignored. The Manoskop 766 Daptiq can be directly integrated into worker guidance systems. When a fastener-tightening process is initiated, the tool receives its data from the process control system via radio transmission and the required torque is set automatically. The display of the tightening sequence and of the assembly points is possible in a number of ways – using permanently installed monitors, for example, or mobile end devices such as tablets. Completed tightening operations are reported back to the process control system in real time in a traceable and lossproof manner, logged with a time stamp and the exact torque, and the result visualised on the monitor screen, which ensures seamless traceability at all times. Calibrating and testing in-house With DAPTIQ perfectControl, Stahlwille offers a calibrating unit which, depending on the version, is able to calibrate both torque and angle-controlled wrenches automatically. The user is guided through the entire testing process by the software. Electronic torque wrenches can be calibrated fully automatically to a large
extent. As soon as calibration has been completed, the corresponding data is available to the computer aided quality assurance (CAQ) system for archiving. With the SmartCheck, end users can check torque and angle tightening tools themselves to ensure, before work begins, that the tools are working exactly and reliably within the specified tolerance ranges. With the DAPTIQ version of this solution, Stahlwille provides a model that has a non-proprietary cablelinked interface for direct connection to the CAQ system, for instance. This allows automated workflows to be created in which every tool has to be checked first before the CAQ system releases it for production tasks. Open to new solutions and business models Stahlwille is continuing to add to its DAPTIQ range. Products that promise to deliver added value to customers in connection with networked production will, in future, always be available as DAPTIQ versions. Stahlwille is also driving the development of completely new business models. With "Pay per Use", the user no longer pays for the tool, but for the actual use or for the data generated in the process. With a view to life cycle costs for use of the tool, such models provide for capital expenditure that is far more calculable. Customers have the possibility to expand these solutions for their tools step-by-step up to an all-round carefree package. That includes modules such as training, usage analysis, condition monitoring, calibration, repair and maintenance, and an exchange service. In the course of the digital transformation of processes and companies, Stahlwille also supports the development of digital IoT platforms, such as SIEMENS MindSphere. In doing so, the company is applying its expertise as a pioneer in torque technology to implement data-driven business models, which offer customers more flexibility and greater efficiency while reducing costs. www.stahlwille.de

SPOTLIGHT HAGUE FASTENERS
A £100,000 birthday present Hague Fasteners celebrated its 50th anniversary by looking to the future, bolstering its manufacturing power with a £100k CNC machine… t’s the busiest 18 months that I can remember,” Hague Fasteners Managing Director Jon Hague tells Torque Magazine. The family business and Black Country manufacturer is celebrating its half century this year and Hague says 2020 was one of the most successful of his tenure. That’s why the firm has taken the decision to invest, he explains: “Now is the time to renovate and future proof the business.” That project has included a whopping £100,000 investment into a new three-axis CNC lathe to help the business deliver more complex parts and increased capacity. The XYZ CT 65 LTY was commissioned at the start of October and has already been used to deliver contracts for the oil and gas sector, with the company hoping the additional turnover will help it move towards its target of £2 million sales by year end. The big investment can perform complex steps in one operation and as it is easy to set up, smaller runs become ever more worthwhile. Hague adds that future investments will likely also look at machines that are more efficient in this way, rather than in terms of square footage expansion. The road to 50 has not always been straightforward, however. The firm has been subject to the peaks and troughs that have affected UK manufacturing over recent decades and even faced its own ‘make or break’ spell over a decade ago. Suffice to say, Hague Fasteners came out the other side more strongly than ever. In 2017, the firm moved to its current 8,500 ft² on Monmer Close in Willenhall in 2017 and now focuses on small batches of specialised items, often troubleshooting and lending its expertise and sticking to a high spec philosophy. The company produces specialist fasteners, headed bolts, studs, nuts and milled components in high integrity materials and critical nickel alloys. It has built an enviable reputation for supplying products you can’t get off the shelf in small to medium batch quantities and in very fast lead times. Working with high integrity steel and

superalloy bar, the company can work to customer drawings to produce parts ranging in size from 2mm to 250mm in diameter. Alongside MD Jon Hague are his wife Claire and sons Jack (Technical Director), Tom (Customer Service) and Max (Finance). The family ethic extends to all of its 16-strong workforce, says MD Jon Hague, while a new crop of apprentices are also proving their worth. “Jaguar Land Rover has done us a favour, by selling the idea of engineering as a career path,” explains Hague. Claire Hague, Company Owner, went on to add: “We also wanted to do something in our 50th year that left a lasting positive legacy, so made the commitment to become Carbon Neutral by 2024. “This has seen us create the ‘Hague Forest’, where we will endeavour to plant and grow 200 trees every year in Haiti, Kenya and Madagascar to offset the 75 tonnes of CO2 we create manufacturing specialist fasteners for use across the globe.” www.haguefasteners.co.uk

TORQUE FOCUS SMART AND CONNECTED TOOLS
DELIVERING QUICKER, SAFER AND SMARTER MAINTENANCE OF WIND TURBINES With more demand for smart bolting solutions that can handle bigger and more powerful turbines come on stream, Atlas Copco Tools explains how it is bringing its Smart Connected Assembly philosophy to the field as well as the factory… he wind energy sector is focused on generating increased wind farm output and reduced operational costs as energy companies are under pressure to reduce wholesale electricity prices through more renewable delivery. From a supply chain perspective, Atlas Copco Tools and Industrial Assembly Solutions is experiencing rising demand for its smart bolting solutions, as bigger and far more powerful turbines capable of generating up to 15MW of electricity come on stream. As turbine size increases, the requirement for tightening larger bolts in challenging off-shore environments, as well ensuring fewer bolted joint failures, improved operational efficiency and faster installation times, is therefore critical. In the context of tower construction and turbine installation and maintenance, Atlas Copco is focused on helping its partners to overcome logistical and operational challenges, as well as delivering competitive advantages in efficiency, whilst reducing risk, time on task and of course, costs. On a mission to apply its Smart Connected Assembly philosophy in the field, as well as in the factory, Atlas Copco has pioneered a number of transducerised tools and data driven systems which, thanks to in-built cloud connectivity, has made it possible for a fully traceable process to be effective at remote installations. The SRB HA Smart and Connected battery nutrunner models, for example, feature an internal Wi-Fi server, allowing the tools to be linked to any mobile device. This enables torque, angle and batch data collection without the need for additional software. For the ultimate in functionality and process control, the SRB HA features an accessory bus for a barcode scanner and can also be integrated into overlying systems for live data feed and analysis. Powered by Lithium-Ion 36V battery technology, the SRB HA is also the only product of its type on the market equipped with a dual trigger, designed to avoid the risk of finger pinch injury. The Tensor Revo HA was designed specifically for use in the construction and maintenance of turbines, requiring high access.

Delivering tightening performance of up to 8000Nm, its DC electric motor is the fastest on the market by up to six times, says Atlas Copco, and also features an integrated torque transducer, which measures real torque applied to the joint. To ensure errorproofing, the Tensor Revo HA has a signal light incorporated in the motor housing, indicating green for ‘tightening OK’ and red for ‘fail’. Its high torque, slim gearbox with 360° gear swivel enables access to the trickiest located bolts. Not only does the torque transducer measure the real torque but angle measurement ensures each bolt is tightened correctly by detecting damaged threads or variation in lubrication. All bolt tightening data can be downloaded and linked to bar codes or identifiers. Even graphical traces of the actual tightening can be stored for analysis. Atlas Copco recently introduced the PFXC (Power Focus CrossCountry) power pack. Whilst existing packs available in the market are often big, bulky and not functional for field use, making them prone to damage which causes costly issues, the PFXC is built to withstand extreme weather. Featuring rugged waterproof construction and robust metal framing, the unit can be easily transported to site for the benefit of operators. In order to have a truly connected and efficient system it is critical that all bolting technologies (hydraulic torque, bolt tensioning, continuous rotation) have one common user interface, both for operational process control and data analysis. Users can instantly connect tools to the power pack with any Wi-Fi device via the QR Code and programme in presets, such as target torque, method and speed. Combined with smart technologies, the PFXC provides the functionality for instant tightening data, so that field operatives know that the process is being completed correctly first time out, saving time, money and vastly increasing safety. www.atlascopco.com/en-uk/itba/products/ Bolt-tightening-solutions

“TOOLS ARE EMOTIONAL PRODUCTS”
Serenco Nederlands Managing Director Remco Geirnaert
For end users, well-made tools can become much loved items, with operators often forming attachments to brands. Long-term relationships are also important at the B2B level, so says Serenco, forming the basis for sustainable growth. Serenco Nederlands Managing Director Remco Geirnaert speaks with Jonathon Harker and the continued enormous potential of the tools market… erenco Nederlands BV is a traditional, family-owned business that firmly believes in a ‘partner for life’ concept. “The way we operate with suppliers and customers is based on long-term relationships,” Managing Director Remco Geirnaert tells Torque Magazine. “You have to invest in partnerships and I believe you need reliable two-way relationships to achieve sustainable growth.” That ethos also brings together tools and end users, Geirnaert explains: “Tools are very emotional products and end users can build a relationship with a good product that is built to last.” Serenco started out in 1986 by seeking out innovative tools and bringing together ingenious products has become a formula for success. The company grew with brands like Metrinch, a tool system with the patented Metrinch Wall Drive profile that drives only on the flats and not on the corners. Able to operate on both metric and inch series fasteners, Metrinch’s success with Serenco initiated the development of special tools for automotive and for general industry. That automotive sector has proved a key market for Serenco, and it’s also one undergoing significant change, says Geirnaert. “We see automotive converging to a wider mobility remit thanks to the growing influence of e-bikes and electric cars.
S
74
torque-expo.com
Some have compared this new generation of mobility as electric motors and batteries on wheels,” he adds, emphasising the scale of change in the sector. While Serenco says it is seeing the automotive market slowly take up more cordless tools, it sees even more potential advantages in using battery-power tools in the general industry sectors, thanks to added ease of operation and portability. “Serenco has a great reputation for tools for servicing,” says the Serenco boss, drawing our attention to the cordless torque multiplier (PH-1500-24V). It’s lightweight and silent in use compared to an air impact wrench. It boasts four torque settings for tightening (450 Nm, 650Nm, 800 Nm and 1,500 Nm) and this easy to operate power tool has no load speed. It’s very competitively priced too, says Serenco, at approx. €1,299. It’s just one example of the innovative tools which are available under the Serenco umbrella. Supply challenges 2021 has been a strong year for the firm, but the increased costs the industry has been experiencing have been difficult. Geirnaert notes the high level of activity in the US market as having an effect on the global supply chain: “Some companies have seen their orders from the US double. Now the USA has recently
74-75 INTERVIEW Serenco TOR059 Nov 2021_LAW.qxp 22/11/2021 15:17 Page 2
passed the $1 trillion infrastructure bill, so that will have a big effect on the order books too.” The industry is contending with shortages, including semiconductors, which Geirnaert confirms are affecting the tool business: “Yes. Like every industry, this is already hurting. In many cases, it’s not a case of being unable to get materials, it’s more the increased costs. If you add the different layers of costs together then it’s quite a significant price increase for customers.”
// Some companies have seen their orders from the US double. Now the USA has recently passed the $1 trillion infrastructure bill, so that will have a big effect on the order books too. // Factories are extending lead times, he adds: “Honestly I think that it is getting worse, not better. I don’t see any signs of improvements, because all the problems are continuing to get worse. Ordering so far in advance is a challenge and adds
complexity to the market. So, what do we do? Order two years in advance? Bike shops are working on 2023 orders at the moment. At some point it will slow down. No industry keeps growing indefinitely, so there will be a readjustment. But which industry will be first and where? “So, on the one hand, business has picked up a lot, but it’s a challenging environment.” “People underestimate the tool market” Current market challenges aside, Serenco is highly optimistic and enthusiastic about the potential for growth. Currently the firm has customers in 48 countries: “Growth will largely come in geographical terms. We are very well established in many territories like the UK, and we are building in Southern Europe and Eastern Europe.” The potential is enormous, he adds: “People underestimate the tool market. It’s a huge sector. Its construction, general industry, automotive, DIY, the electrification of mobility… tools are everywhere.” Tools also tap into current sustainability trends, he adds: “Tools enable people to repair instead of replace – cars, dishwashers… selling tools for people to fix the products that they already own, to enable them to enjoy repair and mechanical jobs. That’s my take on it!” To find out more about the Serenco ranges and ambitions for the market, contact the firm at www.serenco.nl

“THE SAFEST TRUCK FLEET IN EUROPE” Accidents involving trucks and vulnerable road users often end tragically, but is this a fact that must be accepted? Not if you ask EDEKA Südbayern, a German food retailer that has made itself known as a pioneer in traffic safety. ew traffic safety topics are more vigorously discussed in Germany than the need for modern safety systems in trucks. According to the German Federal Statistical Office, 3,100 accidents involving trucks and cyclists occurred in 2017. 76 of these cases led to fatalities – which means more than one death per week. About a third of the accidents leading to personal injury were caused by trucks turning right, meaning the truck driver could not see the cyclist. In recent years, several children have fallen victim to these accidents. Demands to ban trucks completely from cities are being raised, and pressure is growing on governments to take action. An EUwide regulation on extended truck safety systems is already in the works but is not expected to become law before 2024.
F
TAKING THE INITIATIVE WITH TRUCK SAFETY One company that isn’t waiting for new legislation is EDEKA Südbayern. Four years ago, the company developed a turning assistant with an integrated camera that eliminates the “blind spot” for the truck driver, who now can see cyclists and pedestrians more easily. “After several fatal road accidents involving trucks in the region, I conducted research and found out that there were no corresponding safety solutions on the market,” explains Anton Klott, the company’s Technical Director. “Our trucks drive through all big cities in this region and turning is always a dangerous manoeuvre. I decided to develop the solution myself, and two months later, we had the first turning assistant on the road.” Today the system is distributed externally by a partner in the truck market. So far – as part of a project that doesn’t generate any profit for EDEKA Südbayern – it has been installed in more than 2,000 vehicles belonging to other companies. “We are a food retailer that loves safety,” says Klott. “These accidents have dramatic consequences, also for the truck drivers. Statistics show that 80% of all drivers involved in a fatal accident are permanently disabled and unable to continue working. Police and other first responders also need psychological support to cope with these incidents.” PROVIDING THE SAFEST TRUCK FLEET IN EUROPE EDEKA is one of the largest food retailers in Germany. EDEKA Südbayern is one of its seven regional companies with a fleet of about 300 trucks and 475 truck drivers covering the entire southern part of Germany, driving in shifts, 24 hours a day. Klott is a trained car mechanic, carriage builder and farrier and has been with the company for 40 years, since 2000, as Technical Director. He shares a great vision with the company’s management: to provide the safest truck fleet in Europe. And their turning assistant is only one part of that.
78
torque-expo.com
“Safety is more important than money,” he says, using the fire extinguisher in the truck’s cockpit as an example. It is a safety feature that is not required by law but is standard equipment in all EDEKA Südbayern trucks. “Our drivers have been able to extinguish fires in accidents on the highway and to save lives quite a few times now. Several colleagues have even been awarded the Bavarian Rescue Medal for their efforts.” The vehicles also have a reversing assistant that can initiate an automatic brake. Ultrasonic sensors at the rear make it impossible to drive over people or objects. Even before the technology was approved, EDEKA Südbayern installed side flashing lights. When the driver changes direction, the entire truck side blinks and warns cyclists who are travelling parallel to the truck. SECURING WHEELS WITH NORD-LOCK WHEEL NUTS Furthermore, the wheels of the trucks are secured by NordLock extended wheel nuts. “We used to have big problems with loosening wheel bolts,” says Klott. “Sometimes they were not properly derusted, sometimes the driver forgot to retighten them. Alternative solutions were always complicated. For example, the driver had to check regularly that certain indicators on the wheel nuts pointed in the right direction. That’s all history now. The wheel nut solution from Nord-Lock is a perfect system that increases safety.” “Accidents due to loosening wheel nuts can be tragic and also be an incredible blow to the transport company’s public image,” says Stephan Gruber, a Nord-Lock Group sales engineer. “That’s why more and more companies use Nord-Lock to eliminate these kinds of accidents.” EDEKA Südbayern proves that great visions don’t have to be expensive. “All our security attributes only account for about 1% of the total truck acquisition cost,” says Klott. The company has close contacts and a security partnership with the German Ministry of Transport. Truck safety is high on the public agenda, and Klott is proud that his company has been able to inspire others to increase safety. He says: “Today, all long trucks in Germany must have a turning assistant and side flashing lights by law. Of course, that’s a great feeling.” Watch Nord-Lock Group’s three-part video series with Edeka: How to build the safest truck fleet in Europe – How to build the safest truck fleet in Europe – Part 01 – on YouTube. The injection mortar has been approved for seismic applications in performance categories C1 and C2 (ETA) and categories A to F in accordance with the ICC-ESR. It is also a safe choice for water-filled drill holes and in the event of fire (fire resistance class R240). The epoxy resin mortar can be processed in low temperatures of up to -5C. It’s ICC approval additionally includes underwater installation. The injection mortar can also be used in diamond drilled drill holes in concrete without requiring additional roughening or associated procedures and tools.
The FIS EM Plus has officially been declared suitable to anchorages in sealing surface in combination with system components. The German Institute for Structural Engineering (DIBt) issued the mortar with a general design approval for a fixing system for the first time, confirming its usability in liquid-proof concrete (LP/LPP concrete) for various media groups. An expert report based on tests by an accredited testing institute also certifies the compound anchor’s suitability in coated concrete. www.fischer-international.com
UNDERWATER DRIVER The Świna Tunnel is Poland’s longest underwater tunnel (so far). Currently being built between the islands of Uznam and Wolin in the city of Świnoujście, the tunnel below the river Świna will strengthen the coastal region through improved infrastructure connections to the rest of the country and the world. More than 50,000 chemical and steel heavy-duty fixings by fischer have been used to reinforce the tunnel. The fixing expert will support the project with its products and service skills until its successful completion. The Świna Tunnel is being excavated by a TBM (tunnel boring machine) over approximately 1.5 km. Further tunnel sections will be completed using the cut and cover method,
82

during which the excavation and construction are carried out under a cover cast on slotted walls. This construction method allows the excavation pit to be reinforced and the corresponding surface above the launch shaft on the islands of Uznam and Wolin to be used. fischer heavy-duty fixings are being used to reinforce the tunnel after the TBM work is completed. The chemical fixing systems and steel anchors fasten the reinforced concrete supporting structure. This required extreme anchor depths of up to 550 mm with rods measuring M16 and M30 in diameters in order to connect the reinforced concrete shell after the TBM operation. Platforms and struts for the launching shafts were additionally secured with the fixing solutions.

Eurobond Adhesives > backs youngest woman to fly around the world
Sittingbourne-based Eurobond Adhesives Ltd has sponsored 19 year-old Zara Rutherford in her attempt to become the youngest female pilot to fly solo around the world. Rutherford’s adventure began when she took off from Kortrijk airfield in Belgium in her two-seat Shark microlight aircraft on the 18 August. Her stated aim and motivation for the trip is “To inspire young people, in particular girls, to engage in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects at school and to motivate them to enter into technical or scientific careers”. Rutherford has only held her private pilot’s licence for under two years, having qualified at the age of just 17. The aircraft selected to carry her safely around the globe is a Shark UL, a cutting-edge example of the most modern high-performance two seat tandem ultralight aircraft. It features retractable undercarriage and a smaller, high-efficiency wing design together with a variable-pitch propeller and a high tech cockpit interior. The aircraft is designed and constructed using the most advanced carbon fibre epoxy composite technology and incorporates many light-weighting design features such as the use of adhesive bonding to replace mechanical fixings. Rutherford’s machine is powered by a ROTAX 912 ULS 100 hp engine delivering a cruising
speed of 140 knots and a range of around 1,600 km. She will visit 52 countries spanning five continents and will take around three months to complete her record breaking attempt. Readers can discover more about the SHARK aircraft she is using via www.shark.aero. As this magazine goes to press, Rutherford last reported in from Magadan, Russia. Speaking before the attempt got underway, Eurobond Adhesives Managing Director Simon Dearing said: “Zara is a truly remarkable and courageous young woman and is a great role model, especially so for other young women. Our business shares much in common with Zara: embracing cutting edge technology, pushing boundaries and challenging science – in our case to produce some of the best high performance bonding solutions and most advanced dispensing equipment. 70% of the Eurobond workforce is female and everyone here will be following her world record attempt with a keen eye.” Eurobond Adhesives has a long history of supporting organisations that offer young people challenging and engaging activities that are designed to take them out of their comfort zone and help them engage in education. www.eurobond-adhesives.co.uk

market ADDRESSING THE ISSUES
– LOBBYING WORKS With new legislation and big issues like container prices, it’s worth lobbying local MPs and politicians, as well as joining associations in their campaigns. So argues Will Jones, Chief Operating Officer of the British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA)…
ndoubtedly this is a time of change and while some would have happened anyway, it has been accelerated by the pandemic in many areas. Consumer concern about sustainability and climate change is now high on the shopper’s agenda, having been nowhere in any analyst’s top ten a decade ago. We can add other issues arising from other sources – the transportation crisis, new import and export rules now being enforced, social issues at home – and so on. Alongside this, we have Government keen to be seen to be on top of things and turning to legislation as a means of trying to achieve that. All these issues and their legislative consequences are being manifested variously in new taxes on plastics that are deemed single use, new legislation on the responsible retail of bladed items for legitimate consumer employment in kitchens and gardens and home improvement, to mention just a couple. It is not that these issues are without foundation. Just the opposite – these are serious concerns and action to address them is wholly justifiable. It’s just that many are being addressed quickly and initially in less than perfect ways and if unchallenged, the result can be unjustified pressure on our sectors, ironically disincentivising companies from doing what they should be doing - which is supporting the greater good. In the last several months as the new Offensive Weapons Act (OWA) and the forthcoming Plastic Packaging Act (PPA) – in law from 1 April 2022 – have come to the fore, we have seen companies in our sector considerably worried by what that means for them. The key point that we have learnt as a result however is that no matter how right and legitimate the overall intent of a Government position or piece of draft legislation is, it is always worth drilling down into the detail and challenging details if they seem unfair. Never assume you can have no effect – individually or collectively. Probably the most important piece of advice for individual companies in these legislative times is to create an ongoing dialogue with their local MP from the outset as this will be helpful if an issue arises which needs challenge. BHETA has now lobbied very productively on the responsible retail of bladed items and on the scope of plastic packaging tax. In both cases, results have been achieved through a combination of BHETA
U
88
torque-expo.com
approaching the powers that be direct and at the same time enabling individual members to work locally or with their own political and legislative contacts using the templates which BHETA provides. Not only have important amendments to draft legislation been secured, but the collective action has also meant that BHETA and BHETA members can keep informed about exactly what they need to do on an up-to-the-minute basis. As an example, let’s take the forthcoming Plastic Packaging Act (PPA) which becomes law on 1 April 2022. In a nutshell, this is a £200 per tonne tax on plastic packaging which is less than 30% recycled and it is designed to stimulate the market for recycled plastic packaging for which until now there has been no great demand. Its scope and application is complicated however and BHETA has not only lobbied successfully to clarify key definitions such as ‘packaging’, but also teased out the details of other definitions, exemptions, timings and responsibilities so that members prepare appropriately. This has been with the help of individual member actions and the advice of BHETA business service provider, Wastepack who presented the latest information to members in early November.
// Probably the most important piece of advice for individual companies in these legislative times is to create an ongoing dialogue with their local MP. // The outcomes are twofold. In terms of BHETA lobbying, the nub of the issue was the inclusion in the original draft legislation of multiple use items that are used as containers – for example, toolboxes and storage boxes, not to mention drinks bottles and sandwich boxes! This not only seemed to run counter to the principle of minimising single use, disposable plastic, but was set to cost some BHETA members a possible
88-89 BHETA TOR059 Nov 2021_LAW.qxp 22/11/2021 15:20 Page 2
million pounds per annum in so-called ‘plastic tax’. BHETA’s campaign to address this anomaly was on the basis that multiuse is not ‘packaging’ and is indeed part of the armoury against single use plastic. The campaign consisted of BHETA’s own lobbying of Government Ministers and HMRC and the provision of a suite of templates for members to use to mobilise local contacts, something which was actioned by very many individual companies, yielding numbers of MPs who then lobbied on their behalf. The result was a total U-turn with Ministers as high up as the Treasury acknowledging that multi-use plastic should not be penalised by taxation. In practical terms this has saved members between £50 and £100 million pounds across the sector and refocused minds on the real issues. The PPA remains complicated even now it is purely focused on packaging in the true sense, but BHETA has been able to provide members with the essential detail that enables them to understand their responsibilities and liabilities from 1 April next year – answering questions such as: What are the exemptions – and the need to keep records even if you are exempt The difference from a taxation perspective between import, export, UK manufacture and UK sales The definition of ‘recycled’ and the provability of the 30% threshold The differences between primary, secondary and transportation packaging in different contexts The liability checks needed between companies and their suppliers The timeline for registration The key criteria for liability and how to establish your company’s position
BHETA has recently begun a similar campaign – co-ordinating its own lobbying with that of members – to secure Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) intervention in the freight costs crisis. At the very least, the CMA is now actively looking at the issue. In correspondence from the end of September, Andrea Coscelli, CMA Chief Executive acknowledged the impact of the freight costs and said that it had been monitoring the situation for some time, considering the best approach. Due to the international nature of the problem, the current view is that continued talks are likely to be more fruitful than a market investigation into the possible existence of cartel-like behaviour, but that formal investigative work has not been ruled out, if evidence of restrictive practices comes to light.
// CMA Chief Executive acknowledged the impact of the freight costs and said that it had been monitoring the situation for some time. // The learning from all of this is that it is – overwhelmingly – worth tackling issues if they appear to be unfair in the detail even if not in the overall intent. I urge all companies to contact local MPs and to join with BHETA in its industry campaigns. BHETA regularly lobbies on subjects affecting members. It also provides member training, retail events, up to the minute data on market opportunities compliance advice. Apprentice
Q&A Enrique Lopez Teudeloff Enrique Lopez discusses the importance of training and the best things about being a Teudeloff student in Torque Magazine’s latest Apprentice feature… WHAT MADE YOU JOIN THE FASTENER INDUSTRY? I used to dream about becoming a policeman. At age 14, I already had the opportunity to gain an insight into the office processes during an internship at Teudeloff. My responsibilities were filing and other smaller tasks as a mini-jobber for more than four years. I joined the Bundeswehr, the German Army, after graduating from high school. An injury led to an early drop-out of the Bundeswehr. I got to know more about other company processes and tasks during a long-term internship at Teudeloff. During this time, I quickly realised how much I enjoy working in sales and getting to know the fastener industry. I got very curious about the production of the screws, which we also use at home. Sales and the production of the required tools fascinated me from the beginning. I was then offered a dual study programme by Teudeloff, which I started in September 2019. WHAT DOES THE DUAL STUDY PROGRAMME (COMBINED STUDY OF THEORY AND PRACTICE) AT TEUDELOFF LOOK LIKE? The dual study programme is quite varied. You get insights into all business processes. Currently I am in the 4th semester, which is the long-term practical semester. In the last six months, I was given new tasks and projects in purchasing and sales, and therefore also more responsibility. I accompanied colleagues on customer visits and had the opportunity to get to know the sales department in the office and in the field, as well as other companies and their processes. HOW IMPORTANT IS THE TRAINING ON THE JOB DURING YOUR DUAL STUDY PROGRAMME? In my opinion, on-the-job training is one of the most important points of the study programme. At university, you learn a lot of theory, but you hardly have any opportunities in the field. However, during the time in the company, you have the opportunity to apply a lot of the theory in practice and therefore understand it better.
In addition, because you meet experienced colleagues in the company, you learn to see things from different perspectives. Since Teudeloff is always open for optimisations, this also creates many opportunities for improvement. WHAT DOES A NORMAL WORKING DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU AS A STUDENT AT TEUDELOFF? A normal working day is quite varied. I do not have a set responsibility for customers yet, therefore I support my colleagues. I do everything from enquiries to order processing and have constant contact with suppliers and customers. Currently I am working on the implementation of a CRM system in project management. I am in regular contact with our software manufacturer and together we try to adapt the software to our ideas and business processes. This includes the induction and training of colleagues, too. The project takes up a lot of time because I am writing my student research project on this particular topic. In this kind of staff position, I have a certain amount of freedom, but also a lot of responsibility, which I really enjoy and gain a lot of experience from.
// In my opinion, on-the-job training is one of the most important points of the study programme. //
WHAT ARE THE PROSPECTS AFTER COMPLETING YOUR STUDY? I would very much like to continue working at Teudeloff. I see good prospects here for my personal development as well as my business development. In addition, as part of the Würth Group, Teudeloff is a very attractive and reliable employer with international development potential. WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING A STUDENT AT TEUDELOFF? The two most important points are: On the one hand, the great team and the colleagues who see me as a valued team member and work colleague. The jokes and private conversations among each other do not come short either. We are a small familial team with all the professionalism of a global corporation. On the other hand, we have a wide range of customers. From small medium-sized companies to large global players with locations all over the world. For every single one of them, we do our very best every day to guarantee a secure tool supply and to achieve the optimum tool life. It never gets boring. www.teudeloff.de
