IT’S SERVICE... PROBABLY
There’s a reasonably famous quote from a US Presidential race in the ‘90s (attributed to James Carville, then advisor to Bill Clinton) that goes: “It’s the economy, stupid.”
Emphasising that voters were concerned with economic issues above almost all else, it served to cut through other peripheral topics and concentrate minds on what will help win the election.
Winning business, rather than elections, is probably on the minds of most of the people reading this, but is it possible to boil down the way to win business to a single factor, like Bill Clinton’s (winning) team did? If you could, what do you choose? Price? Availability? Service? Relationships? Great quality products?
It’s tempting to hedge my bets at this point and say “all five of them” – although it’s not so snappy to say: “It’s price, availability, service, relationships and quality products (stupid)”.
But if you had to pick one… Service is definitely a contender. A recent survey reckoned that around 75% of consumers would abandon a brand after just one poor customer service experience (Source: TCN). That’s a sobering reminder that every interaction your business has with customers potential or otherwise can be vitally important. Many of the wise business heads that we’ve been fortunate enough to interview (including this issue’s Guest Editor) have returned to the topic of great quality service too. So, if you’re pushing me, I’d have to say: “It’s great service (probably).”

URS LANGENAUER, GESIPA MANAGING DIRECTOR AND HEAD OF DIVISION RIVETING OF THE SFS GROUP IS GUEST EDITOR OF THIS ISSUE OF TORQUE MAGAZINE
So much has changed in the world in the last few years. Sustainability has long been important, but has become more pressing. The energy crisis following Covid and the terrible war in Europe has seen energy demand and prices jump up. So, the push for energy efficiency is now simply something that is good for the environment, but also about saving costs for business. As an organisation that means we have to think hard about how can we help our customers to save energy and also how we can become more energy efficient and reduce our CO2 footprint.
Another big challenge is the shortage of skilled labour, which was more a theoretical topic before Covid, before many people left the workplace. So again, we ask how do we help our customers address that issue? And I think, with our system that we offer to the market, we have some excellent responses to the challenges of our customers, for example in providing automation options and process monitoring, which monitors and documents the setting process.
Following the supply disruptions, we’ve seen discussion of reshoring manufacturing. We have production sites in Europe, Asia, North America already. Perhaps we’ve seen peak globalisation, but we have to be realistic because manufacturing requires an eco-system – very few manufacturers do everything in-house and rely on associated companies. And you have to ask, with challenges in recruitment, where will we get all this new labour from?
Innovation continues to be important, also in terms of service, by using our engineering knowledge and working closely with our customers to come up with innovative fastening solutions that ultimately create

value for them. We see that as a growth area. A very high level of service is one of the most important things that a company can offer. GESIPA puts a lot of effort into having real human beings available to speak with customers when they have a problem. It doesn’t matter if you’re in China, the USA, the UK, Germany, Poland, etc, this is a service we offer.
Sustainability is an urgent topic. You can reduce a company’s carbon footprint and use 100% renewable energy, for example as we do in Germany. Then you can reduce customers’ energy consumption with products, like our Birdie, which makes more efficient use of battery power, high quality components and engineering technology and our pneumatic tool series TAURUS which is highly energy efficient. Making tools and processes as efficient as possible is becoming mission critical for any company. I’m optimistic. There are a lot of smart people around the world working on these challenges as we all push for sustainability.

PATRIZIA BERNABEO BENERI SPA
At BENERI SpA, CEO Patrizia Bernabeo works alongside multiple generations of her close-knit family at the rings and washer manufacturing company her father founded. In this Women in Fasteners interview she reveals the pleasures and pitfalls of operating a family-owned business and some of the changes she has seen in the industry over her nearly 50-year career.
14 torque-expo.com INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS
How did you get into the industry?
It was 1975 and I was only 16 years old when my father, who is the founder and owner of BENERI SpA, introduced me to the business. For about three years, I worked at the company during the day and studied in the evening to learn English and the basis of Sales and Accounting.
Then I began my career in the business, starting from very basic roles and moving up stepbystep, gradually getting much more involved across all the departments such as sales, commercial, marketing, accounting, financial etc. Then I was nominated as CEO together with my brother Giovanni.
As CEO, what does your day-to-day job involve?
BENERI is a familyowned company, so I am involved in every aspect. I could avoid this but I am deeply interested in knowing and being informed about anything. I think it is important for me to always have a clear general picture of the company.
My core business is maintaining relationships with customers, banks, administration, and making important decisions about big projects and investments.
What are the biggest changes you have seen in the industry and company since you started?
The biggest change I have experienced in my career is about people and social aspects. BENERI was founded in 1958 and started with my father, his associates and a few employees. The company was really a big family; workers were proactive and had an enormous sense of responsibility with their job and their employers. It was easy to hire wellskilled people and staffing was not an issue.
Today people are rarely fond of the company they work for, younger generations are prepared to change their job quite often and they normally have a poor sense of responsibility and sacrifice. People focus more on themselves rather than for the collective good. Young workers or students are not as wellskilled but they are not always willing to learn from the older generations. The increasing role of technology is creating a gap of mechanical workers.
Can you share a positive memory of your career?
One of my best memories is about the meetings we organised with the most important Italian and international producers of retaining rings and fasteners. I remember very well the famous managers of that time sitting around a big table with my father, discussing and sharing their opinions about the market and about technical aspects of production.
Your father was one of the founders of BENERI and other members of your family have also been involved in the business. What are the benefits and challenges of working alongside family?
Yes, today my whole family is involved in the company: my father is 92 but is still coming into work every morning, my brother Giovanni, my husband and the third generation with my son and daughter also work here.
The benefit of working together is the sharing of any experience: we celebrate positive events together and also share

the heaviness of difficult moments.
The greatest challenge is that there are a lot of people and each one of us is different. Sometimes we have different opinions and decisions are not always easy to make.
However, we must be clever and maintain a good balance without losing sight of our main goal, which is doing our best for the company and for all the people involved.
What is your favourite thing about the fastener industry?
I am the commercial soul of the company, I love talking with people and sharing information and knowledge about business and cultures. My favourite thing about the fastener industry is meeting customers from all around the world, attending the trade shows and visiting the companies of our distributors or endusers.
What do you think needs to be done to encourage more women to get involved in the fastener industry?
Today more and more women are involved in the fastener industry, especially in the top positions as Mechanical Engineers, Technical and Quality Managers, R&D Managers or Health & Safety Managers, Sales, Marketing, IT and other areas. I think there is a total lack of women in technical and skilled labour, so I suppose highschools and technical institutes should encourage more women to get involved in this kind of career.

FIRST RATE: ALFIRSTE ON EXPANSION, INVESTMENT & INNOVATION
Specialising in producing screws, ALFIRSTE has bolstered its offering, achieved key certifications and exports its range to over 20 countries. Fresh from opening its third factory, ALFIRSTE is now looking to expand with an innovative new product range…
Screw manufacturer ALFIRSTE is based in Zhejiang, China. Founded in 2006, it started out as a small workshop, before developing into a substantial fastener producer, exporting fasteners around the globe, predominantly to Europe and increasingly to the United States too.
ALFIRSTE’s evolution into the production powerhouse it is today has included a number of developmental milestones, perhaps few as crucial as its decision to break out from solely producing standard parts. Expanding into specials and inhouse products was a move designed to help ALFIRSTE serve the market better and also to help develop the business itself, Torque Magazine is told.
Another key milestone for the business came in 2016, explains ALFIRST Sales Manager Michael Wu: “When the EU's antidumping of fasteners from China ended, our company entered the European market and established a more complete laboratory.”
That internal infrastructure and legislation change paved the way for further related developments, he adds, including obtaining CE certification in 2018, the year that ALFIRSTE also opened a second factory: “Then, in 2020, ALFIRSTE obtained the ETA certificate and began to produce stainless steel products.”
European exports make up roughly half of ALFIRSTE’s output, and – as mentioned earlier – export volumes to the United States are growing rapidly. The business sends product to circa 20 countries at present. With expanding demand for the company’s fasteners, ALFIRSTE has gone on to open a third factory and also embark on a new strand of its production business.
“In 2022, the research and development of bimetal screws started; in 2023, bimetal screws will be successfully developed and put into production.”
If those bimetal screws have piqued your interest, you’re not alone. Torque Magazine further quizzes ALFIRSTE on the topic. Wu says: “These new products are ALFIRSTE’s prediction of the future market trend and also a product upgrade of ALFIRSTE.
“In the future, ALFIRSTE will continue to forge ahead, continue to tap the potential of bimetal screws and stainless steel products, and develop new products at the same time. This product is currently in research and development, but it is being kept secret for the time being.”
In fact, innovation is a cornerstone of the ALFIRSTE business, keeping its R&D department exceptionally busy. “Without innovation, the company will lose its core competitiveness,” says Wu.
COVER PROFILE ALFIRSTE 18 torque-expo.com
Bi-metal screws are an area of innovation for ALFIRSTE
ALFIRSTE's manufacturing facility has recently expanded
SCREW SPECIALIST
ALFIRSTE now has around 150 staff and over 400 machines at work, with a capacity of 1,500 tons per month, set over its 15,000 m2 factory, with a construction area of 12,000 m2
The screw manufacturer’s product lineup features drywall screws, construction wood screws, hex head/truss head/CSK head/pan head selftapping/drilling screws, chipboard screws and threaded rods. ALFIRSTE uses both carbon and stainless steel materials for the production of screws.
You won’t need us to remind you that Covid and subsequent supply chain disruption affected virtually all of the planet and most industries, not least in Asia. What’s the view from a Chinabased fastener manufacturer on the pandemic? Is the disruption largely over and did it bring about any unexpected efficiencies or improvements for companies? Wu says the disruption “is not over yet, but that’s not a bad thing for ALFIRSTE. We have more time and energy to develop new products, improve our own service quality, improve production deficiencies and optimise the process of each link, thereby improving the overall production direction and efficiency.”
QUALITY FOCUS
Clearly, ALFIRSTE’s quality focus has been paying off, adding scientific researchers to its roster of staff and evolving the quality of its laboratory to help it achieve those allimportant CE and ETA certifications. Each production process is checked at random by quality inspectors, ensuring only quality products are allowed to move to the next stage. The wellequipped quality department has everything from the humble calipers to salt spray test machines, Rockwell hardness machines, torque testing machines, SPECTRO spectrometer, temperature and humidity meters to metallographic specimen polishing machines, Fischerscope XRay, drilling testing machines and a metallographic microscope, to name just a few.
That spotlight on quality and innovation goes handinhand
with ALFIRSTE’s focus on building customer relationships. Keen to invite customers to visit its factory to see its manufacturing facilities for themselves, ALFIRSTE also has a busy calendar of trade shows where it will continue to reach out to new and existing clients.
Wu outlines the plan: “This year, our company will participate in the FASTENER POLAND show in October and the International Fastener Expo in October. Next year, our company plans to participate in the EISENWARENMESSE in March, Fastener Fair France in May and Fastener Fair Italy in October. And in 2025, we will participate in the Fastener Fair Global in Germany every session.”
While ALFIRSTE continues to expand, invest and innovate with new ranges and technologies such as its bimetal screws project and stainless steel, the fastener producer says it will continue to practice the concept of “Original Spirit, manufacture with heart” as it grows for the future.

VITERIA FUSANI: INVESTING IN INDUSTRY 4.0
Tell us more about Viteria Fusani and what you offer?
Viteria Fusani is an Italian familyrun screw manufacturing company that was established in 1955. The company produce tailor made screws in large quantities, mainly for manufacturing companies in many different sectors such as electromechanical, automotive, pneumatic and others. We are Quality system certified IATF 16949.
The third generation of the Fusani family leads the company today, with many others in key positions. What benefits are there for being a family business?
The benefits for being a familyrun business are being able to have a complete overview and control of all key areas and we all work with the same passion of our founders and with an awareness that this is something we are continuing to build.
How is business going this year and how is the long-term situation looking compared with pre-Covid in 2019?
We have worked a lot, particularly following the start of the war, where we saw an increase of orders due to companies rushing to avoid a shortage of goods. Looking at the future we are working steadily, maximising our production capacity.
Viteria Fusani operates in Italy and globally. Can you give us some idea how the Italian market is doing right now, compared with the rest of Europe? Or is it much the same?
We have seen an increase in business with Germany and we are receiving interest and enquiries from Eastern countries.
You’ve launched demagnetised screws – can you tell us more about those and why they are an advantage?
We have used a demagnetised system specifically to solve a client's need. We offer this solution so that if there are any interferences with machines and screws, this is an effective way to resolve the issue.
Do you have any other new product launches planned for 2023-24?
We work very closely with our clients' needs and requests, and as such don't have a standard range, however we always look for innovative ways to develop our screws to expand our offering.
What are some of the sustainability initiatives at Viteria Fusani?
We have adopted several sustainable activities as part of our manufacturing process such as water recycling, metal scrap recycling etc. At the moment there are no new activities planned but rather we will continue operating as we have been for the past few years. But we have strongly invested in developing the 4.0 industry.
What does the rest of 2023 and beyond have in store for Viteria Fusani?
Looking ahead, our focus is to hire and train new staff members to secure the high level of skill needed in this industry, especially to combat personnel turnover due to retirement.

FAR: FUTURE FOCUSED
Operating from Bologna, FAR has grown into a diverse business with clients in Italy and internationally. Managing Director, Massimo Generali speaks to Torque Magazine about market conditions and the steps the company is taking to meet future demands.
new investment into automations and special machines. For 202324 FAR plans a restyling of some tools with the aim to reduce weight and increase performance.
New fasteners are being developed regularly and FAR receive approximately 250350 new product enquiries every year, of which approximately 1520% are developed each year. Concerning tools, FAR has designed and launched the new KJ46 for rivnuts which regulates the force through a pneumatic valve and helps protect the operator from possible damage to tierods.
What sustainability and environmental initiatives does FAR have on the agenda?
How is business?
FAR’s business has been consolidated for many years and it is well diversified globally across many different sectors and categories of clients: from specialised distributors to wholesalers and to selected end user manufacturers. Dealing with the “general industrial” mostly, FAR business can be considered stable despite the recent political and economic fluctuations.
Because of all the recent disruption we’ve seen, how is the long-term situation looking for FAR compared with pre-Covid in 2019?
Many things have changed since 2019. The meaning of “normality” itself has been reconsidered nowadays. FAR has redesigned its approach to the international markets. Video conferences are now part of our daily activities and allow us to be close to clients at any time and clients seem to be available to this new way of communication more than before as well. This allows us to solve problems quickly with a significant improvement in timevalued activities and communication. Travelling is still an important part of the commercial activity and FAR considers it still a priority on all markets, domestic and international. Covid was impacting a lot on costs of many materials and this situation is still ongoing, although hopefully the trend is slowing down now.
How is the Italian market doing at the moment compared with other markets?
Italy has a deep and consolidated tradition in production activities; so, the domestic market is still important for FAR, with high attention paid to the specifics of the Italian players. On the other hand, key clients are often international players acting on a wider market scenario. FAR, being a true manufacturer of rivets, rivnuts and tools, can grant high stock availability to clients. This grants fast deliveries and tremendous costs savings for clients globally.
FAR has its own Technical Training Centre in Bologna, what kind of activities and training occur at this site?
The FAR training centre was opened around five or six years ago. This centre meets the demand of education FAR received from all over the world. It has been created to provide support and educational training programs designed for distributors, and for a few selected end users that were asking for consultancy. Video conferences allow us to respond quickly to technical questions to provide solutions to issues and they have been integrated as part of the programs.
In terms of products, have you launched anything new this year or are any planned?
The Covid period gave FAR the opportunity to redesign its own range of products with
This topic has been one of our top priorities for years. FAR has converted the lighting systems to energy efficient lowconsumption ones already. The heating and cooling systems have been recently upgraded. A new photovoltaic system with solar panels will be put in place soon to increase the company’s energy performance.
Regarding the cleaning processes at the end of the production lines, these now include special filters and pumps for the recycling of water, oil and detergents. On top of that, a consistent volume of productions are run overnight when demand for energy is lower, thanks to the high presence of automated technologies in production.
What does the rest of 2023 and beyond have in store for FAR?
Keep going as we did in the past 65 years, with focus and passion. We are now focusing on strengthening the relationship with consolidated clients, trying to increase the level of services, the invisible part of FAR products. Innovation and R&D are on top of our priority list together with the level of educational support FAR can provide to clients globally.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
FAR manufacture 100% of its product line card in Bologna, Italy. We encourage our new clients to visit FAR at first. There is a saying at FAR which sounds like that: “if a client will visit FAR, it will become a new client soon.”

EXPERIENCE AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO FACE CHALLENGING APPLICATIONS
Bolt correct functioning is vital in the construction industry. Growermetal’s productive model and washers lines are aimed at opening new possibilities for the sector.
At Growermetal’s HQ, departments in close proximity create a flow where the production process meets quality controls, ending with packaging and storage. This system is the core of the Italian company located in Calco, 40km from Milan.
Through investments, flexibilty, innovation and wide ranging services, Growermetal can establish long-lasting relationships, with its customers, personnel, trusted partners and suppliers.
Starting with spring washers manufactured for the railway sector, the washer portfolio has grown to include applications in automotive, aerospace, transport technologies, industry machines, agricultural and earth moving machines, oil & gas, power generation, electromechanical and construction.
In challenging and demanding applications, such as in infrastructure and construction, there are key criteria when selecting suitable materials, treatments and geometries: “Maximum precision, strength and resistance to stress are essential,” says Paolo Cattaneo, CEO of Growermetal. “Whenever the market demands accuracy, Growermetal’s products come into play: our knowledge and ability to provide different coatings, treatments and designs in short times make the service competitive.”
Quality is key; Monitoring parts throughout the process is combined with optical and mechanical checks: “The synergy between cross-checking, research, design development and testing allows us to improve the performance of the parts, with a focus on their uses in specific contexts.”
Washers are important in ensuring safe bolting in critical applications in combina-
tion with bolts and nuts. Easy, flawless assembly and a lasting performance even under high vibrations or stress are essential in construction. For these challenges, Growermetal offers three different solutions: a wide range of standardised washers, personalised parts according to customer drawings and a branded line with exclusive designs, inaugurated with the launch of Grower TenKeep® in 2019.
Giovanni Griggi, Technical Office Manager, says: “We were looking for a safety washer which could offer the maximum performance against loosening of the bolted joints: we found the perfect combination after repeated laboratory tests on hundreds of different geometries.”
Grower TenKeep® is the result: a safety washer with two different surfaces. Side A is the part of the washer in direct contact with the head of the screw or nut, characterised by an advanced serration geometry that prevents the loosening of the bolted joint connection, and side B remains solid to the bearing surface thanks to its knurling.
Giovanni Griggi adds: “The design of Grower TenKeep® responds to the requirements of structures subjected to dynamic loads or high vibrations, like bridges, tunnels or other infrastructures. With an untightening torque significantly higher than the tightening torque, the performance is durable and the washer doesn’t damage the bearing surface.”
There's new building application safety concepts too, using digital technology to monitor infrastructure. Giovanni Griggi explains the latest design of Grower Detecto®: “We are working in partnership with the Politecnico of Milan to further test,
research and verify the potential of this new solution. Basically, we have integrated a smart sensor into the washer, enabling realtime detection of bolted joints preload. The embedded sensor sends signals through an Electrical Mechanical Impedance method, so engineers can remotely monitor that everything is working correctly.”
Using this technology, the Grower Detecto® washer will report parameters to an Artificial Neural Network, with the objective of preventing failures and checking bolted connections or structural deterioration. While similar products require periodic on-site and manual inspections, Growermetal’s solution is aimed at eliminating this need, maximising the effectiveness of operations with minimal downtimes and maintenance costs.
Paolo Cattaneo concludes: “Bolted connections are among the most widely used parts in mechanical applications and construction engineering, fields where safety is paramount and efficiency essential. Solutions like Grower Detecto® will simplify complex and time-consuming operations, whilst ensuring reliable performance in applications subject to tridimensional loading conditions.”
“We are still in a phase of experimentation and testing, in order to improve Grower Detecto® characteristics and check future market opportunities related to this type of technologies: Of course this is only the beginning of implementation, anyway the results are encouraging and perfectly meet our goal of increasing safety through innovative solutions.”

RIVIT: 50 YEARS YOUNG WITH GROWTH IN ITS SIGHTS
Now benefitting from being part of the FERVI Group, Rivit continues to develop its services and ranges, which are already among the industry’s widest. Torque Magazine speaks with Francesco Montanari, CEO of Rivit about the needs of Rivit’s distribution customers, the growth of sectors like the solar market and continued investment in quality, service and supply…
How’s business for Rivit at the moment?
Business in Rivit is progressing well. We had a very positive 2022, which saw doubledigit growth versus the previous year and the first months of 2023 are showing a similar trend.
Rivit has significant presence in India and North Africa – how are those markets performing at the moment? The performance in Morocco and India has been higher than the company average and the results have been particularly good in India. We are developing new plans for both regions to take advantage of the respective market specificities and this is proving to be very successful.
Rivit became part of FERVI Group in 2021, which was clearly a significant change. Now the dust has settled on the move, can you explain some of the benefits for Rivit and also for Rivit’s customers?
The synergies developed by joining the FERVI Group are many and at different levels. First, today Rivit can draw on the expertise of the Group’s managers for all staff functions. In this way, the management standards typical of a listed company are guaranteed also in Rivit and there is a continuous exchange of information and knowhow.
At the product level, most of the items in the catalogue of the Group companies are also available more conveniently to Rivit customers.
Finally, with regards to sales channels, thanks to the cooperation with FERVI and the sharing of the specific network of agents, Rivit is significantly developing the Resellers channel, in addition to the more traditional Industrial and Tinsmithing /metal sheet channels.
To summarise: Our customers can now benefit from a wider product range, a more effective omnichannel approach to buy our products and a new management that will help the company improve its approach towards innovation and quality.
Rivit is pretty active on the trade show scene – how have the shows been for Rivit, are things mostly back to normal post-Covid for trade shows?
We normally tend to be pretty selective with tradeshows, targeting the most important events only, at Italian and inter
people in person, of shaking hands and this is now clearly visible in the postpandemic events. I personally believe this trend will continue for the next few years.
We’ve recently heard about Rivit’s new Gtreriv rivets – how important is R&D and launching new products for Rivit? Can we expect more new products in the near future?
national level, but we do believe in the great value of meeting people in person. We think that tradeshows are still a great opportunity to develop and strengthen relationships, with customers, partners and suppliers. The Covid pandemic has taught everyone the value of meeting
Rivit has one of the widest product ranges in the fasteners market. Our research has as its primary objective to maintain breadth and completeness of the range, continuing to include the most innovative products and the Gtreriv is a good example. This is a guarantee for our customers, who can see us as the onestopshop for a very large range of products. In addition to innovation and completeness of the range, our product marketing and research and development team works to ensure that we maintain our qualitative and performance leadership.

Sticking with Gtreriv, that is a product suited to photovoltaic panels – have you seen this solar energy sector grow in recent times?
Yes, there is a clear trend in Italy and in many other countries towards incentivising the installation of solar panels, which require very specific fasteners, like the Gtreriv, which is a market leader here. Thanks to these incentives and the new trend towards environmentally clean energy, these applications are growing very fast.
Gtreriv rivets are quick and easy to fasten thanks to the mechanism that allows the mandrel to break flush with the surface, ensuring the effectiveness of the rivet on joints with different thicknesses.
corrosion resistance due to the aluminium alloy that makes up the body and the mandrel, they are effective even in critical weather conditions. In particular, Gtrerivs are suitable for fastenings on the brackets that support photovoltaic solar panels on trapezoidal sheeting and sandwich panels.
Rivit is also very active creating tools for production lines, which are of course focused on error proofing and traceability. Is this largely for the automotive sector? Does Rivit have the ability to customise solutions for specific production line customers?
What kind of challenges are facing your distribution customers at the moment?
There have been many changes in the economy during and after the pandemic times. The impact of inflation, the growth of energy costs, the disruption in the transportation environment, with strong changes in prices, all these topics are creating issues to our distribution customers. Stability, reliability and competitiveness is for sure what they are asking for today.
These rivets are designed to be used even on soft, thin, flexible and fragile surfaces, because thanks to the three large pressure wings, the clamping force is distributed over a large part of the surface, preventing damage. Thus, any material can be riveted safely. Gtrerivs feature good tensile strength as well as resistance to cuts and vibrations, making them suitable for precision fastenings due to an excellent level of grip even on curved surfaces.
Rivit designed these rivets for the construction industry because thanks to their waterproof characteristics, given by the neoprene gasket placed under the head, and
This is another strong trend. Industry 4.0 is bringing new levels of automation in automotive and in many other industries. We have an offer of tools dedicated to the new factory automation needs and we are also offering control systems which are more and more required in this environment. Just to make an example, when the installation is made by a robot and not by a human being, it’s absolutely important to guarantee that the right number of rivets are correctly installed in each specific part. This is what we can offer and we are actively working to improve this new family of devices. There is a large demand for these solutions and we are prepared to assist our customers also in customiation, even if our target is to design products that are already providing all the features needed by the applications.
As a manufacturer, are energy prices a concern for Rivit at the moment?
Luckily, we are not a very energy intensive company, but today the inflation is pushed by many other sources and so we are suffering like everyone from this new situation.
Rivit is 50 years old this year, which is a huge milestone. Have you got any celebrations planned to mark this special occasion?
We are very proud of this achievement and we celebrated this very important anniversary during the month of May with an event dedicated to all Group employees, followed by an open day at our headquarters in Ozzano (Bologna).
It would be hard to map out the next 50 years for Rivit, but how about the next five years – what are the ambitions for the company?
No secrets: allround quality, customer care and service, and breadth and excellence of offerings have been our strengths for the past 50 years and our target for the next five (but also 50) is to continue leveraging on these drivers to foster the company growth and position it at the level it deserves, in Italy and worldwide.
Let me just summarise the strengths we want to continue investing in: quality, service and supply. And this applies to all our stakeholders.

OPTIMAL FASTENER MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY
Carlo Salvi says it is offering flexibility, reliability and support on a higher level for its customers than ever while also working on developments and advancements to ensure its customers continue to “have the advantage of the best fastener manufacturing technology in the world”...
Curiously, the first machine designed and built by Carlo Salvi was actually a flat die thread roller. The Milan factory, though, was completely destroyed during the Second World War and production moved to its current location at Garlate, close to the shores of Lake Lecco, where in 1952, Carlo Salvi produced its first TP2 machine (1die 2blow former) sold to a German customer.
In the 1970s, Carlo Salvi began producing cold formers with a distinctive toggle action, which particularly suited the machines producing semitubular rivets by allowing a more controlled extrusion of the material as well as improving finger timing and reducing wear on tooling and the crankshaft. Ten years later, during the 1980s the company introduced the first 2die four 4blow header to the market, now a configuration unique in Europe, and which still provides an excellent platform for manufacturing as much as 80% of standard and special fasteners, that can handle special alloys (like titanium ones and other alloys) mostly suitable for aerospace and automotive fields. As the decade advanced so did Carlo Salvi technology, with the advent of five and then six die progressive formers to meet the demand for evermore complex, near netshape components.

The last few years were very positive for Carlo Salvi, with remarkable growth, which has continued in the first half of 2023: Carlo Salvi foresees an increase of its business of 1015% this year. 2022 also saw a full validation of the commitment and investment poured into modernising both production facility and the actual products in the aftermath of the financial crisis. “We continued to invest in our R&D department, in order to be better than ever for when the market returned.” That it unquestionably has, as Carlo Salvi CEO Federico Uslenghi confirmed record sales at the recent Fastener Fair Global exhibition. “We closed a few deals during the show, something that no one was expecting, and due to the recent pandemic situation was very unlikely to happen”.
Amongst those sales were orders for Carlo Salvi’s latest introduction: the CS 001 micro parts former, with a wire capacity range of between 0.6mm and 3.2mm. Also, on the stand there was a “classic” Carlo Salvi offering, the CS 246 E 2die 4blow machine, with full electronic adjustment, demonstrating modernisation of a tried and tested configuration, which provides the versatility and capability to produce complex shape components. The machine model 246E is the classic
example of a Carlo Salvi machine that, if accessorised with an integrated heating system, grants high performances (high production speed, high productivity, very short tool change times). With this machine it is possible to produce special screws from 6.5mm. wire diameter, shank length of about 50mm with extrusion and chamfer at the output speed of 220 pieces per minute, so widening the gap with the competitors’ machines of similar range, it says.
The Garlate facility is unquestionably busy today, in common with most of the fastener machinery sector right now. Federico Uslenghi, the CEO of the Company, is confident, though, in Carlo Salvi’s capacity and flexibility to respond to continued orders for new machines: “Our investment in facilities, skills and people over the last five years has been focused specifically on ensuring our capability to respond with good lead times and service as well as the most advanced equipment available on the market.
“Our customers are busy today, which is excellent news for everyone. We know, though, they are not just looking for a good price but also for the technology to advance their own businesses and respond to their own customers’ demanding requirements. We also know that more than ever before they need productivity and flexibility, reliability and support. These are things that Carlo Salvi is able to provide to levels never previously offered. We have more than 80 years of experience, knowledge and business stability behind us. In front of us we have even more developments and advancements to ensure our customers continue to have the advantage of the best fastener manufacturing technology in the world.”

AUTOMATIC PACKAGING LINES FOR THE BUCKET PACKING OF FASTENERS
Automated bin feed systems, vibratory hoppers, weighing and counting machines… Weighpack has a complete packaging machine programme for the fastener and hardware industry…
Sorted: Weighpack's extensive and specialist service sees it install complete packaging lines for the hardware industry
Now almost 50 years old, Dutch company Weighpack evolved from a small workshop manufacturing weighing machines for fasteners and other hardware products to a leading company that designs, manufactures, installs and service complete packaging lines for the hardware industry. Weighpack’s Packaging machine programme features more than 50 different machines and is constantly being improved.
The complete portfolio ranges from automated bin feed systems, vibratory feed hoppers, weighing and counting machines, case packers, palletisers, bag makers, transport conveyors, to box formers, and closers and much more. Besides the standard machines, almost all packaging lines are suittofit, custom build systems. Their purpose is to offer their clients, a wide range of highquality products, with the best quality/price ratio in the market. Weighpack is among the most renowned and used brands on the market.
For a market leading fastener supplier in the US, Weighpack designed and built a bucket packaging line to suit their high demands on packaging quality and performance. The company realised that between the production of components and the storage and the transport there is another important process: the process of dosing and packaging. It is a specialist field, which focuses on efficiency and accuracy. Weighpack was invited to work out a suit to fit solution for the bucket packing process of fasteners from product infeed up to check weighing, lidding, labelling, printing and case packing.
As a specialist in the development and production of complete packaging lines for bulk hardware, Weighpack proposed a clientspecific solution that results from over fortyeight years’ experience and innovative approach.
The original RFQ cited: “To design, fabricate, install and commission a fully automated and integrated packaging line with a single point of control capable of portioning and placing customer’s product inside the preformed plastic buckets, resulting in retail ready sealed package.”
Weighpack developed a tailormade bag packing line, creating a system that meets the customer’s requirements for flexibility and offers the potential to grow with the company.
One integrated system
Weighpack has a unique product speciality: processing products with a small volume and a heavy weight. The Weighpack strength is that they can keep the entire process in one hand, from the initial advice up to and including service and maintenance. All components in the packaging line of Weighpack have been optimised and integrated. This means that all partial solutions ‘communicate’ with each other and the peripheral equipment. This has many advantages for troublefree operation and efficient maintenance. At Weighpack the customer benfitted from knowhow in the field of machine engineering, mechatronics and control technology, both PLC and PC. It resulted in a system that was built up and tested at the Weighpack company’s plant in The Hague.
The packaging line configuration that is capable of the orientated packing of carbon steel fastener products in buckets starts at the infeed of the products were the customer empties internal bins in the main Storage Hopper. The product flow from the 1200 kg/2600 lb capacity Vibratory Hopper is regu
lated from a special Vibratory PreWeigh Trays, who stream the products to the Zshape inclined cleated belt conveyor with wave edge to feed a 14Head Combination Weigher which can generate an output of up to 35 buckets per minute!.
Stacked buckets are automatically destacked by a bucket dispenser and fed onto a belt conveyor. At the end of the conveyor four buckets or transferred into a servo drive pocket conveyor. The pocket conveyor is indexing four buckets every cycle, presenting four boxes simultaneously to the filling point under the multihead weighing system.
The product filling point is equipped with an orientation magnet to align longer steel fasteners in the narrow containers. In the following indexing sequence, the buckets are check weighted. After the quantity check the buckets are automatically provided with 13 drill bits and 1 driver bit before they are lidded and labelled. The following laser printer completes the packaging cycle by branding the buckets with a production date coding.
4flap master cartons are erected from an automatic case former and presented to the case packer. The end of the line case packer configuration loads three or four boxes in the master carton, after which they are closed and labeled. At the customers facility the line will be extended with a robot palletiser.

parties that the certified management system complies with the specified requirements. It helps us to understand whether the business is providing services that are suitable for today's conditions.”
Norm Tooling has planned the necessary certification activities to be able to provide services in different sectors. The aim is to obtain the AS 9100 certificate to be able to serve in the Aerospace and Defence Industry market in 2023.
The MES System has been implemented to ensure effective production processes. Norm Tooling says it is the first manufacturing plant to implement the MES system specifically within the die production facilities. Due to simultaneous data collection and traceability functions, the production process is monitored and improvement-focused actions are taken and implemented for the outputs.
Along with all these efforts, Norm Tooling places great importance on digitalisation applications. A digitalisation committee has been established with representatives from each department to determine the projects to be carried out within the year and create activity plans. The work carried out has enabled Norm Tooling to be able to take rapid actions, analyse data, create institutional memory and ensure the sustainability of the work done. www.normtooling.com

AUTOMATING MANUAL SCREWDRIVING LOCATIONS USING AI
DEPRAG and Micropsi Industries are now working in collaboration to achieve increased flexibility in screw assembly
DEPRAG and company Micropsi Industries revealed in Q2 that they would cooperate on providing an automated screwdriving solution which can handle different types of variance at production stations. Using this solution, screw assemblies can be robustly automated for, what they say, is the first time: “This was previously not possible, or not economically sound, using past traditional systems.”
The challenges of automated screw assembly
Screw assembly is prevalent in all production industries. The process creates a secure connection between two or more parts, using one or more screws. What initially sounds simple, is in practice extremely complex due to the wide range of variances, such as position, angle and manufacturing tolerances. Using conventional automation, it is usually complicated and expensive.
DEPRAG has teamed up with Micropsi Industries in order to meet the challenges involved in automating screwdriving processes. DEPRAG is an established and experienced manufacturer of screwdriving systems, special machines, robot cells and assembly systems for customers from various industries including manufacturers from the automotive, household goods and electrical industries.
“We are pleased to be in cooperation with such a traditional manufacturer as DEPRAG and to be able to profit from their enormous wealth of experience in the field of screwdriving technology,” says Dominik Bösl, CTO of Micropsi Industries. “This joint solution is taking on a crossindustry challenge: screw assembly. The cooperation provides our customers with a robust and profitable automation solution, advancing our goal to simplify access to automation.”
The intelligent screwdriving solution enables the compensation of position, angle, and manufacturing tolerances in components.
AI-based screwdriving solution overcomes variances
The cooperation brings DEPRAG's screwdriving technology and Micropsi Industries’ MIRAI robot control system together. By using artificial intelligence, MIRAIcontrolled robots can reliably manage complex production tasks which were previously either not possible, very complicated or unprofitable to automate. A MIRAIguided robot can react to its working environment and correct its movements in real time.
“The intelligent controller MIRAI from Micropsi Industries is an ideal extension to our automation portfolio”, explains Daniel Guttenberger, Screwdriving and Feeding Technology Product Manager at DEPRAG. “At the heart of our company philosophy is our pledge to always offer our customers the best quality and most innovative products. Technologies such as MIRAI allow us to react to the current challenges of our customers and support them with competitive solutions longterm.”
The intelligent screwdriving solution from DEPRAG and Micropsi Industries means that position and angle tolerances, as well as production tolerances can be compensated on the component. Dynamic tasks on a moving belt can also be mastered for the first time. The solution is suitable for the assembly of a wide range of products and components for example, household appliances, electronics, automotive parts, agricultural machines and much more.
The joint screwdriving solution can be seen in action in this video:

WAFIOS’ LATEST DOUBLE BLOW MACHINE
The largest WAFIOS Umformtechnik double blow machine is now also available with hightech induction heating: For several years now, there has been a trend towards inductive wire heating which has recently been accelerating. In the last five years, WAFIOS Umformtechnik alone has equipped approximately 20 different cold formers in various stages of upgrading with inductive heating worldwide.
And no wonder – the advantages of wire heating in the immediate vicinity of the forming process impress users: Optimised material flow and therefore higherquality products, and tool service life extended many times over.
So it made sense to equip a reliable, globally used 1die, 2blow machine like the Cold Former HD 7 with this technology. This machine forms wire with a diameter of 37 mm into parts with a length of up to 160 mm. Induction heating transfers energy to the wire without contact. For the machine operating companies, this results in high productivity gains and cost savings.
The system is rounded off by a newly developed, fully closed noise protection cover which can also be equipped with a highperformance CO2 extinguishing system to complete the safety concept. And it goes on: In future, the HD 7 will also be equipped with a new brake clutch combination drive.

GALVANIC CORROSION OF ZINC FLAKE SURFACES
Corrosion protection solutions on the testing stand: Florian Feldmann of Dörken Coatings GmbH shares the technical details of galvanic corrosion and the ways to combat it with corrosion protection solutions…
Many different influences act on the surface of coated parts. In addition to weather conditions such as humidity, heat or cold, mechanical stresses such as stone impacts also affect the coating. In another respect, galvanic corrosion is also a major challenge for the coating.
Galvanic corrosion is – by definition – caused by an electrochemical reaction between two different metallic materials in contact and moisture. For corrosion to occur, there must be electrical contact between the metals as well as a common electrolyte. In addition, at least one of the two metals must be active. In galvanic corrosion, the more noble of the two metals in contact becomes the cathode, the less noble the anode, where anodic metal dissolution takes place.
Origin and prevention of galvanic corrosion
Whether metals are designated as noble or ignoble depends on their standard electrode potential, which is measured in volts (V). The reference here is the hydrogen electrode, which has been defined as zero volts. All metals with higher standard potential are more noble than hydrogen, all below are less noble. Zinc, for example, with its standard potential of 0.76 V, is less noble than iron with 0.41 V. Thus, there is a potential difference between the metals. In this case, the anodic partial reaction occurs at the zinc, which therefore dissolves preferentially, while the cathodic partial reaction occurs at the iron. These properties of zinc as a sacrificial anode mean that it is frequently used for cathodic corrosion protection, often to
protect steel. The extent to which this protection can exist, even when damaged, depends immensely on what kind of electrolyte surrounds the component. The more conductive the electrolyte, the more the cathodic corrosion protection is activated. With nonconductive electrolytes, on the other hand, the cathodic protection is reduced.
Is there a way to prevent galvanic corrosion? In the case of corrosion processes, it is generally true that they cannot be stopped, but can only be slowed down considerably. For this to happen, two materials can be isolated from each other, for example, so that they do not touch. There is also no galvanic corrosion when using two metals with similar potential, at best two of the same metal. In addition, one of the two metals can be separated from the electrolyte or the electrolyte can come into contact with only one of them (see Fig. 1).

Corrosion protection solutions in the field
DÖRKEN regularly carries out test series to check its corrosion protection solutions, also with a view to galvanic corrosion. For this purpose, panels or bolts coated with the zinc flake are brought into contact with different metals such as stainless steel, aluminium or hotdip galvanised steel panels. The panels and bolts are then subjected to various corrosion tests: Salt spray test, constant climate test, cyclic alternating test and outdoor exposure in different climates. To test the performance of the various systems, different zinc flake systems are tested, some with and some without topcoat. To check the influence of the area ratio on galvanic corrosion, the contact partners can be brought into contact with each other in the form of different panel sizes (see Fig. 2).
In addition to this type of test series, which provide DÖRKEN with a large number of helpful results, the coating solutions continue to be tested with regard to galvanic corrosion. At an outdoor weathering site in Herdecke (see Fig. 3) near the company headquarters, for example, bolts are brought into contact with different counter materials. Here, for example, the zinc flake coating comes into contact with carbon fibrereinforced plastic (CFRP), galvanic zinc surfaces, titanium or different aluminium alloys.
Different partners – different results
The results of zinc flake surfaces in contact with aluminum are consistently positive in terms of corrosion protection. In all the tests carried out, the best results were found in terms of corrosion protection. This is probably due to the favourable potential difference between the two materials. The tendency of aluminium to passivate in the open nature may also play a role in this.
The contact of a zinc flake surface with stainless steel represents a much more critical scenario, since there is a much less favourable potential difference between the two metals and the zinc thus dissolves to a greater extent. Whereas in the salt spray test there is already severe red rust formation after a relatively short time, there are only minor signs of corrosion in the constant climate test as well as in outdoor weathering. In order to achieve good corrosion protection results in contact with stainless steel even in salty atmospheres, the application of an additional sealing topcoat to isolate the two surfaces is essential (see Fig. 2).
Coefficient of friction and behaviour of the surfaces
Galvanic corrosion can occur in particular in bolted joints of dissimilar metals, since threaded components typically have greater differences in layer thickness than flat surfaces and, on the other hand, the surfaces are subjected to mechanical loads during the bolting process (see Fig. 4). In these bolting cases, the coefficient of friction of the surface, which can be adjusted by defined lubrication, is of great importance.
The coefficient of friction is not an exclusive property of the surface, but of the pairing of the surfaces of the bolt and the mating surface or thread. The standard test for determining the coefficient of friction DIN EN ISO 16047 provides for blank reference parts made of steel (hard and smooth). The bolt is then installed against this. Aluminium is usually soft and rough and therefore places high demands on the lubrication, which can be consumed by the tightening of the bolt. Also, it is not only the lubricant, but also the base layer that must be considered, as this can already have different basic frictions.
Avoiding galvanic corrosion when fitting against CFRP or magnesium by means of insulating layers has not been crowned with success so far. In most cases, the layer rubs off or even the smallest injuries create contact between the metallic partners, which leads to galvanic corrosion.

JPB SYSTÈME REVEALS SMALLER SMART WASHER WITH BROADER RANGE OF APPLICATIONS
PB Système has revamped its Smart Washer device to boost MRO efficiencies, reduc
ing the need to manually check torque levels thanks to touchless and wireless measurement of bolt axial load.
The business, which recently acquired a stake in French 3D printing manufacturer Addimetal (see www.torqueexpo.com), and reduced the thickness of its smart washer from 7.6mm to 5mm. By leveraging improvements in strain gauge technology, the busi
ness can now offer the smaller washer vaieant that is easier to integrate and retrofit, while delivering the same functionality of its larger counterpart.
JPB’s Smart Washer operates on the principle of alerting engineers quickly to fasteners that are too tight or too loose. The washer performs the fundamental role of a standard option but uses intelligent connectivity by incorporating a proprietary strain gauge, as well as a transmission system into the washer, which via an accompanying reading device (Smart Reader), relays the information to maintenance engineers.
Thanks to its smaller sizer, the newsized Smart Washer can also be used across an increased number of areas within aircraft, for example, while the original 7.6mm washer has proven itself to be increasingly suited to experimental scenarios in ontheground test environments.
Furthermore, as a result of its smallersize, the 5mm Smart Washer offers a weight reduction of onethird, which contributes to overall objectives for improved lightweightedness.

SOLUTIONS, SOLUTIONS
Peter Brett gets to grips with Holemaker Technology’s VersaDrive System. Will it live up to its fast, easy and efficient reputation…?
THE QUOTATION “Don’t bring me problems, bring me solutions” seems to have many origins. But the VersaDrive system seems to be exactly that – a comprehensive solution, that is both easy and quick, to the problems associated with drilling holes in metals.
We have all seen the problems. View almost any of the ‘Grand Designs type’ TV projects and it is rare that the construction of a steel frame has gone exactly to plan. It may just be one bolt, or several, whose designated holes just don’t line up. The solution is also often not simple either. The holes are designed – not randomly placed – and it can be difficult to find the right pattern. But if it is decided that a simple relocation of the holes is enough, then VersaDrive is the quick and easy answer.
THE STORY OF VERSADRIVE
Expertise doesn’t just spring out of nowhere – it was the hardwon knowledge and experience that brothers Piers and Hugh Crane brought to VersaDrive that found the solutions needed by their customers.
Originally the brothers had worked in a familyrun welding and engineering supplies business. There were many times when they were asked for specialist metal drilling tools that officially didn’t exist. More research by them discovered that drilling or modifying steel bolt connection holes was a major stumbling block. Mistakes and redesigns with connection holes could not be easily rectified by a simple hand tool that drilled out wherever it was needed. Even small Mag Drills could not always be used because they are, by definition, heavy and not always easy to place exactly where they are needed.
However, cordless impact wrenches, drivers and drills were now powerful enough to handle new methods of drilling holes speedily, easily and in the right place.
The solution for Piers and Hugh was to form a company, Holemaker Technology, to speed up metalworking technology by developing new cutting tools. After patent applications were lodged, the VersaDrive System was launched.
THE STAKIT KIT
The kit I was brought to try out was the STAKIT 31piece Site Installation Kit that was created to ‘combine an essential set of bestselling VersaDrive products to overcome all common site installation and steel erection hole making challenges’.
It is available in metric and imperial and they are identically priced at nearly £960. The tools come neatly packed in a STAKIT Mid case that will fit onto all similar STAKIT bases and top cases.
It is literally possible to stroll onto site with your whole problemsolving kit in a case on wheels. That includes the cordless power tools, charger and batteries and basic safety kit. That is another set of problems solved.
The tools are set firmly in a foam that keeps them safe in transit and you get:
Six Turbo Tips Drills, five hole cutters, two Impact step drills, three drill taps, three ImpactaTaps, four reamers, ¼ inch and ½ inch impact wrench adaptor and a MagDrill adaptor and two extensions.
The foam also ensures that users are able to spot missing tools immediately. Tools past their best can be individually replaced.

SETTING MY PREJUDICES ASIDE
I have used many versions of magdrills from corded to cordless and I instinctively treat them with a great deal of care. They are often used at height so the magnets need to be adequately strong and they need to be tethered properly. Fifteen kgs of magdrill can make a mess if it falls and cutting always has to proceed at a reasonable pace with sufficient lubrication and care. So, some time issues there.
Within five minutes of setup, Piers had me challenging my views of metal drilling. Using the adaptor and a holecutter mounted into the chuck of a 40Volt drill, and with just a squirt of aerosol for lubrication, Piers managed to drill 14mm diameter holes through 4mm thick steel in about 18 seconds. The holes were round and did not sprout sharp swarf at every turn. They were clean and useable straight from the drill.
Handing over the drill Piers told me to have a go. My
natural caution meant that it took some time before the really effective impact cutting action took over and the hole was completed. Yes, it was that easy. The hole cutter can cut much thicker metal – up to 30mm if I remember correctly, so it will have no difficulty drilling RSJs and such like.
Even a nonregular user like me, could see the benefits of being able to drill almost instant holes easily and controllably as there is no kickback on the particular Makita drill we used.
I went on to try out all of tools in turn. I particularly liked the taps, the reamers and the step drills. Changing the tools is easy via the chuck adaptor and the results were easy to obtain – it took me only a couple of tries to get a perfectly tapped hole into which a bolt could be screwed in by hand. I can’t emphasise enough how easy and quick using this kit is. And any metal fabricator who doesn’t have one at hand is seriously missing out on saving time and effort – and money too.
A BIT MORE…
It has taken Piers and Hugh nine years to get the current state of play. It involves patents, 750,000 tools and much effort, but the payback is that the tools are sold and used in over 50 countries.
New ideas and methods are the drivers of Holemaker Technology with sites in Kent and Sheffield where staff, machinery and resources develop new cutting tool solutions to the very highest standards. A cursory glance will tell you that – even to a nonexpert.
It is hard not to be impressed by the performance and ease of use of these tools – even my gruff local steel fabricator was gruffly impressed. And that for me, is enough.

GOING STRONG
There aren’t many businesses that can say a random telephone enquiry from the yellow pages changed the trajectory of its operations and turned around its fortunes in the process, but that is exactly what happened to Hydrajaws.
At the recent event to celebrate Hydrajaws 35th anniversary and the official opening of its new headquarters, Morgan House, in Tamworth, Chairman Royston Morgan told the tale of how one such phone call started the business on the path that led them to where they are today. In its original incarnation as a design and manufacturing company, it provided special purpose machine tool fixtures for the production processes of a wide range of companies. The firm had been involved in hydraulic clamping, when Royston joined as MD in the 1980s, but this market was waning due to the introduction of CNC machines and new streamlined production methods. The need for specialist designs of fixtures with hydraulic clamping methods was shrinking and alternative ideas needed to be considered.
While the parent company of Hydrajaws at the time were not interested in investing in the new tester, Royston made the decision along with his family to go it alone and completed a management buyout in 1988, securing the future of the firm and the new product.
Upon receiving an enquiry asking if Hydrajaws could provide equipment to test construction anchors, it planted a seed for new products and services the company could offer. At the time they didn’t have the capability, but after some market research to discover what tools were – and more importantly weren’t –available, Design Engineer Bill Griggs developed Model 0087, a prototype that was launched in the press and pushed Hydrajaws in a new direction.
At the anniversary event, Master of Ceremonies Denis Chick described Hydrajaws as “one of the most significant companies you’ve never heard of.” An interesting claim but one that seemed appropriate despite the crowd of clients, partners and guests. As experts in their field, the team at Hydrajaws have consistently developed new products to meet the changing demands of their sector over the past 35 years.
After the success of the original prototype product which could test up to 20kN – which equates to 2 tons, Hydrajaws have continued to develop new models with stronger capabilities such as the large 90kN version which came out in 1993 but has since been superseded by the 145kN model which was released in 2008. New features and accessories have been developed along the way with more improvements consistently being rolled out.
Who are Hydrajaws you may ask? As developers and manufacturers of portable testers to validate the holding force and safe installation of anchors and fixings in construction materials, they may be relatively unknown but hugely important to everyone’s safety.

A partnership with large OEM was established in 1992 to supply Hydrajaws testers, branded with their company name on the product and the box, for their own use and to sell on to their customers in the UK. That partnership with Hilti continues today, with others following suit, to make the Hydrajaws brand an internationally recognised ownbrand labels.
Evolution and diversification have always been a hallmark of the testers with kits developed early on for testing the installation of motorway central reservation crash barriers, this kit is still supplied to highway contractors. More recent developments have included the move from analogue gauges to digital versions and as a true sign of the times, Hydrajaws Verify® App and rechargeable digital gauge. The App can record test data with GPS, time and date then compile a comprehensive report which gives far greater traceability for users.
Customers for Hydrajaws testers include engineers and installers from various industries including construction, marine, telecommunications, fall protection, rope access and scaffolding. The company has a strong UK presence although 70% of sales are for the export market. They have distributors in the USA, Australia and Germany but reach over 65 countries across North and South America, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and the Asia/Pacific region. There are plans to expand the distribution network with the focus on market niches and appointing further service and calibration partners in key markets.
Investment in the new facility was as much about continued growth as it was to aid operations. The new purposebuilt facility in Tamworth is 20,000 sq. ft. and features a dedicated stores area, a muchimproved working environment with three times the assembly capacity as well as dedicated office space and training facilities.
Along with investment in their physical facilities the company is continuing to invest in other important areas including a CRM system.
E Commerce is an area they are developing with recently added training courses and products soon to be available. Their dedicated training facility enables them to deliver courses to customers and showcase their everexpanding product portfolio.
Recognised as experts in their field, Hydrajaws continues to be a trusted supplier, working with wellknown brands such as Hilti, Rawlplug, EJOT, fischer and SFS among others. They’ve also picked up an export award for Made in the Midlands earlier this year. So, while the name Hydrajaws may not be familiar to everybody, most people can say they’ve inadvertently benefited from their expertise.

SCELL-IT UK: NEXT GENERATION OF TWO-HANDED LEVER SETTING TOOLS
User comfort and compact design means these next gen tools from Scell-It UK are primed for use even for extended periods of time and in confined areas…
Scellit UK has just released a new range of next generation lever tools for setting rivets and rivnuts that are putting worker comfort first.
They are designed to be incredibly userfriendly, featuring ergonomic handles that are comfortable to hold, even for extended periods. This handle's shape and texture provide a secure grip – to avoid slippage, increase accuracy and give more control.
A major new feature is the new gearing system (called ‘XForce’) that provides three times more power, which means less effort is required to complete each setting. The mechanism works by multiplying the user's input force, making it possible to install rivets and rivnuts in a fraction of the time it would take with traditional hand tools.
Another benefit is the compact design that means it can fit into tight spaces, making it ideal for working in confined areas.

Additionally, the tools’ lightweight design makes them easy to handle and transport.
For rivets, there is the R300 which can set standard and structural rivets of sizes 3.0mm to 6.4mm, in Aluminium, Steel or Stainless Steel. It may be small – measuring just 125mm x 375mm and weighing just 1.2kg – but it is designed to pack a punch with the ‘XForce’ gearing system enhancing the twohanded lever force.
For rivnuts, the N300 has a range of M4 to M10 in Aluminium, Steel and Stainless Steel. WORKING WITH WIND
As focus moves to the renewable energy sector, companies are grappling with the very specific requirements of wind turbines and other specialised systems. Take a look at some of the companies meeting the challenges presented by this sector and some of the innovations they have developed to drive this area forward.
data monitoring, an integrated barcode scanner to ensure complete traceability, pressurisation buttons and a userfriendly LED operator display. And finally, the compact and portable SP2000 hydraulic power pack with low vibration, builtin circuit breaker protection and 230V single and 400V threephase options.
Designed to further improve safety whilst reducing overall processing time by as much as 50% in the construction of critical energy infrastructure such as wind turbines and nuclear reactors, a new Smart Tensioning System (STS) has been launched by Atlas Copco.
Ensuring an even more costefficient, accurate and traceable bolt tensioning solution for fieldbased applications in the energy sector, the STS is the first fully integrated system that’s able to guide the operator through every step of the bolt tensioning process.
By combining the power of its stateoftheart tensioning technology with total data capability, including integrated pressure torque and angle sensors, Atlas Copco’s latest upgrade to its Smart Connected Bolting portfolio, not only reduces processing time by up to half but also prevents errors and rework, thereby saving operators both time and money.
The Smart Tensioning System itself is a combination of three key core components; the Smart Tentec Tensioner (STT) delivering up to 2000 bar of pressure with a failsafe mechanism and status LEDs for operator guidance; the Power Focus Hand Controller (PFHC) which provides a single hand controller for all functions. The PFHC features HTML connectivity for live
Commenting on the launch of the Smart Tensioning System (STS), James McAllister, General Manager, Atlas Copco Tools and Industrial Assembly Solutions, said: “Until now, the bolt tensioning process has been dependent on equipment and operator efficiency. STS is the first truly smart bolt tensioning system which enables the whole tensioning process to be guided and measured, for absolute accuracy and consistency. Atlas Copco’s launch of the STS represents an innovative addition to our portfolio of smart tooling solutions, in the drive for ever more costeffective and zero defect assembly and maintenance. This next level of traceability and datadriven insight will be a real asset in helping energy companies improve both human and business performance, which is all the more compelling in the current economic climate.”

With the help of the rotor blades, which can be up to 85 metres long, energy is extracted from the air flow and moved to the generator. Due to the size and weight of such a blade, the bolted connection to the rotor hub must be absolutely secure. Up in the air, the rotor blades are not only exposed to the surrounding atmosphere with rain and temperature fluctuations, but the wind load and the operation of the unit also exert dynamic forces on the components.
tion coating is applied using the racked dipspin procedure or the spray application. An even and adhesive coating is achieved with an application individually tailored to the respective component. Dörken also offers a zinc flake spray that cures at room temperature. This is particularly suitable for repairing faulty areas after the application or handling process of rotor blade fastenings. Apart from zinc, the zinc flake spray contains no heavy metals, cures at room temperature after approximately 20 minutes and meets high requirements of the condensation water test and salt spray test according to DIN EN ISO 9227.

Secure bolted joints are critical for the operation and safety of infrastructure but ensuring that these joints are tightened, and stay tightened, to the correct preload can be a challenging task. As wind turbines get bigger, in increasingly harsh environments or on floating platforms, bolted connections are reaching their capacity limits and are often complex to design, install, and maintain.
Traditional methods for monitoring preload, such as using torque wrenches or ultrasonic measurement, can be timeconsuming and inaccurate. Now, with the advancement of SMART technologies, it's possible to install sensors on the joint and monitor the preload remotely – transmitting data via a Cloud and reading it from a smartphone or computer dashboard.
How SMART preload monitoring works
Superbolt LST is based on the wellknown
Superbolt
MultiJackbolt Tensioner (MJT), with strain gauges installed around the lower section of the nut body to measure its expansion as preload increases or decreases.
Companies interested in remote preload monitoring don’t need additional skills or specialist knowledge to use the products. The plugandplay systems can be used by an operator with a handheld device to read out preload during installation or maintenance checks, then left installed to transmit data during the lifetime of the application. Using a wind turbine’s WiFi, or radio networks via sim cards, preload data can be monitored from anywhere in the world.
How to use preload data gathered by Superbolt LST/LSF
A key advantage is that NordLock Group SMART solutions can collect and store large amounts of data, which can be analysed to detect patterns and trends.
Remote Monitoring: get live preload updates at intervals defined by you (as frequently as 100 times per second). Preload can be monitored in real time from anywhere.
Predictive Maintenance: use the data to understand changes in preload over time, identify a potential failure and alert the team for preventive maintenance.
Alerts and Notifications: setup automatic notifications when preload falls outside of a predefined range, enabling maintenance teams to act fast and prevent damage.
Historical Analysis: alongside sea level data, wind speeds and other weather conditions – use the saved preload data to troubleshoot past maintenance incidents/discoveries. Research & Development: use the preload data and weather conditions to help with the planning of future windfarm developments, or for innovating newer turbine designs.
Where to monitor preload
There are few restrictions, and Superbolt LST/LSF can be used to monitor preload on most bolted connections inside the wind turbine. They’re commonly applied to flange connections in the MPTP connection given the increasingly large forces tower bolts are subjected to, on the bladetohub bolts, yaw bearings, anchor bolts and more.
IoTbased remote preload monitoring can be used in any industry where the use of bolted joints is critical for the operation and safety of the equipment. There is huge potential in
other industries, such as oil and gas, construction, rail infrastructure, manufacturing and mining, to name a few.
Advantages of using Superbolt LST/LSF?
Accurate: torque checks tell you if a bolt is loose or not. SMART solutions give you accurate preload values within a range of ±5% (Superbolt LST).
Secure: Based on MultiJackbolt Tensioners (MJTs), bolted joints can be tightened with high accuracy without requiring specialised skills or heavy tooling.
Cost-effective: because ‘prevention is cheaper than the cure’. Scalable: test NordLock Group’s SMART technologies in partnership with expert engineers. Prove the concept in a sample of your applications, then scale up to cover your most important assets.
Profitable: extend the lifecycle of windfarm operations, or other, with reliable structural monitoring.
Non-invasive to the structure: most monitoring/measuring methods are invasive, but Superbolt LST leaves the bolted connection as it is, without destroying anything or altering the calculations.
Easy-to-use: NordLock Group SMART products are essentially plugandplay solutions, and you can get full support to get started with installation and monitoring.
Continuous: LST & LSF are at work, even when you are not, the dynamic monitoring of loads avoids bolt fatigue and fracturing. Using remote preload monitoring systems can expand the possibilities of structural maintenance and infrastructure design. NordLock Group’s SMART solutions are actively supporting the wind industry to improve safety, plan more efficient maintenance and improve the overall performance of turbines.

Primus Wind Power is positioning itself to meet heightened demand for its wind turbines. The Coloradobased manufacturer received funding to optimise wind turbine system designs and contribute to the wind turbine deployment efforts in the U.S.
Part of the process includes prototyping and testing hardware and components that are resilient and can outperform in harsh weather conditions. One of the biggest concerns is the ability to withstand water, saltwater, torrential rains, hurricanes, and high winds repeatedly and over long periods of time.
To ensure that water would not enter through the external face cover of the wind turbine and potentially damage the screws or its inner components, Primus Wind Power tapped Ransford Engineering, to perform a series of water ingress tests. When compared to other fastening options, such as washer gaskets, ZAGO sealing screws engineered with a 360° Oring under the head of the screw successfully prevented water seepage.
ZAGO corrosionresistant sealing fasteners are engineered with a custom groove underneath the head of the screw and when combined with a rubber Oring and tightened squeezes outwardly to form a 360° leakproof seal. This impenetrable seal will not break or crack once the screw is torqued preventing seepage or leakage of liquids, gases and more from damaging equipment or the environment. When paired with a rubber Oring like EPDM, the sealing screw can withstand strong winds, torrential rains, saltwater, extreme heat, frigid temperatures, snow, moisture, dust, etc. With an unlimited shelf life, an EPDM Oring is perfect for sealing outdoor devices and will stand the test of time.
“In addition to passing the water ingress test, investing in ZAGO sealing fasteners makes sense. Like Primus Wind Power, they are made in the USA and designed to protect our environment,” says Ken Kotalik, Director of Global Sales and Operations, Primus Wind Power.
“It’s a privilege to be part of Primus Wind Power’s supply chain,” says Gail Friedberg Rottenstrich, CEO, ZAGO Manufacturing Co. “Working with manufacturers that are combating climate change is right up our alley.”

Eurotec is a longstanding company with a focus on fastening technology for demanding projects in timber construction as well as in deck and garden construction. A selected part of Eurotec's wood construction screws has been produced at its own location in Hagen since 2013. In 2022, the company decided to expand its inhouse production area, creating more space and setting futureoriented goals, including becoming independent of the world market as a local manufacturer and supplying innovative highperformance connectors for sustainable prefabricated timber construction and timber construction in general. For this purpose, the production hall has doubled in size and investments have been made in machinery. Consequently, the company can react quickly and flexibly to changing market demands and increase production capacity. Likewise, local production holds great potential to effectively reduce CO2 emissions in freight transport.
An everincreasing proportion of timber construction screws are currently produced locally and will continue to be so in the future. The manufacturing processes range from thread forming to head and tip geometry to screw length. The wide range will include inhouse produced screws from 5 x 40 mm to 13 x 1400 mm. Extensive experience in the manufacturing process as well as distinctive knowhow from many years of work can be seen in the product range and form the basis of the company’s further development. By subjecting to regular test procedures and monitoring of production steps according to the highquality requirements of DIN EN ISO 9001, customers can be assured of reliable and longlasting products.
The expansion and further development of the production facility at the site is far from complete. Production operations are not yet running at full capacity. Some machines for screw production will still move into the hall extension in the near future in order to successfully complete the existing range of machines – a big step towards creating real added value for customers and the company.

fischer’s ULTRACUT FBS II concrete screws combine easy installation and safety when transferring heavy loads in concrete. New developments to the range mean it now covers an even wider range of applications. The FBS II 610 versions are the world’s first concrete screws to be suitable for use in masonry in compliance with ETA regulations. Combined with the FBS II 10 US gvz, the new FSW adjusting washer enables quick and straightforward adjustment and alignment of beams and joists. fischer UltraCut FBS II concrete screws combine high loadbearing capacity with quick installation. Steel and stainless steel variants with an European Technical Assessment cover compliant applications in cracked and noncracked concrete, both indoors and outdoors, as well as seismic loading in performance categories C1 and C2. The assessment also regulates fire resistance classes of up to R 120.
Further advantages include the fact that the UltraCut FBS II guarantees reliable force transfer and installation free of expansion pressure thanks to its form fit. The concrete screw’s patented thread geometry and large core diameter support high shear and tensile loads in concrete, requiring fewer fastening points. UltraCut FBS II can be reused under certain circumstances, enabling low edge and axial spacing for safe and easy installation. Depending on the diameter, the concrete screw offers a high degree of flexibility in terms of loading, with up to three approved screwin or embedment depths. The concrete screws come in many different diameters ranging from 6 to 14 in zincplated steel and 8 to 12 in stainless steel, various head types and approvals for multiple use enable additional application options.
The product is easy to use. The concrete screw is inserted into the drill hole using the pushthrough method of installation and finished. No further drill hole cleaning is required during vertical drilling in floors and ceilings or when using hollow drills with vacuum functions.
ETAs & ACCREDITATIONS
The expanded approval now covers an even wider range of applications. With its FBS II 610 variant, fischer now offers the world’s first concrete screw with an ETA for masonry. This includes all FBS II versions in diameters 610 made of galvanised steel as well as diameters 810 made of multicoated CP steel and stainless steel. The assessment regulates anchorages in solid and perforated brick masonry and covers brick types including clay bricks (EN 7711), solid limesand brick (EN 7712) and perforated sandlime brick (EN 7712). FBS II can be used in the brick, joint, as an individual anchor, an anchor group as well as in plastered masonry. The conditions and assembly instructions and/or ETA provide detailed instructions in each case.
Wood construction specialists and carpenters can now adjust beams and joists quickly and more easily with the new FSW adjusting washer combined with the concrete screw Ultracut FBS II hexagon head US in a 10 mm diameter (gvz). Until recently, carpenters often had to lift beams between two people and adjust wood blocks of different sizes underneath. This method is highly laborious, which is where the FSW adjusting washer comes in. Just a few steps are sufficient: Simply fasten the FSW into the concrete through the beam together with the UltraCut FBS II 10 US gvz. Next, a second, reversed FSW with a downwardfacing notch is placed over the head of the FBS II and fastened to the wood beam with PowerFast FPFPT 5x40 screws to allow precise adjustment. To do so, the wooden beam is precisely aligned with an impact wrench, such as fischer’s FSS 18V 400BL with torque control, by slightly loosening the FBS II and subsequently lining it. The upper FSW can be disassembled and reused as required.

JCP 100-year anchor service life
JFix UltraBond 100 epoxy resin is the latest addition to the JCP resin range and the higheststrength resin they offer. With a 100year anchor service life and a double shelf life, it is set to be a popular choice.
Available in a 585ml tube, UltraBond 100 is a formulation derived from pure epoxy with very high bond strength. It is used principally to anchor rebar, threaded studs, and internally threaded sockets into concrete. Used for highperformance structural applications where loading is critical, it is ideal for rotary hammer drilled dry and wet holes. The twocomponent chemical anchoring injection system in a 3:1 ratio can achieve high loads in cracked and uncracked concrete.
ETA Option 1 approved, it is suitable for high loads featuring large diameters and deep embedment. Longer working times make it ideal for large holes and high temperatures. It is also approved for use under seismic actions C1 and C2. Offering high durability and resistance to chemicals, UltraBond 100 is a lowemitting material and qualified to be categorised as LEED v4 and v4.1 Beta according to ISO 16000, EN 16516, ISO 118902 and ASTM D2369 testing standards.
Why UltraBond 100? Sustainability! Sustainability has grown considerably in the construction sector, with more attention paid to building practices and the materials chosen. INVESTING IN ACCREDITATION
TOGE has made the conscious decision to invest in the accreditation process for a number of products to aid their customers and ensure they meet the highest demands by offering safe and high-quality products. Product Manager, Niklas Barlovitz, talks to Torque magazine about the new approvals and plans for future assessment and accreditation.
What products have TOGE recently received accreditation for?
We expect a new ETA approval very soon for the TSM High Performance concrete screw for use in solid masonry, such as sandlime bricks and perforated bricks, masonry bricks and lightweight concrete blocks. With this additional approval, we are expanding the area of application of the concrete screw, as it is now also approved for use in other substrates in addition to concrete. From the point of view of fire resistance, the use of a concrete screw in masonry is also more suitable than previously used systems such as plastic anchors and chemical anchors.
Furthermore, we also expect a very special approval for our stainless steel A4 concrete screw TSM LT A4 for use under “WHG requirements” in the coming weeks. WHG is a special German regulation, which applies to groundwater in a critical environment with endangered substances, like washing plants.
Within this approval, our screw was tested with a special epoxy mortar for resistance to various acidic and alkaline substances and the tightness was also tested under load. This ensures that no substances hazardous to water can penetrate the groundwater when using this system.
What sets this product apart in the market?
Currently, there are only two other suppliers besides us with a similar approval for concrete screws in masonry. For the WHG approval with concrete screws, we are the only ones with this combination on the market.
How did you find the accreditation and assessment process?
The approval procedures are extremely timeconsuming and cost intensive. However, it is precisely the approval procedure, which can be very complex, and the test procedures required by the various guidelines that ensure that approved products comply with the areas of application and performance data specified in the approval. Due to the continuous necessary external monitoring, this quality is also permanently monitored and tested by an independent body, which makes approved products extremely safe. From our point of view, it is therefore essential that this procedure continues for these products, because only then can the customer be sure that he is buying a product that has been tested and is safe for the application. The approvals are therefore a real differentiator in terms of quality and safety.
Why is it important for TOGE to get accreditation for its products either in Germany or for export to the European market?
For TOGE it is one of the highest goals and expectations to offer safe and highquality products. For this reason, all our safetyrelevant products are equipped with superior approvals, in some cases even up to five different approvals for different applications for one product range.
As a manufacturer in Germany, it was and is a matter of course for us to have our products approved with the DIBt. Since the DIBt also enjoys a very good reputation internationally, this also fits in with our claim for the highest quality and reliability.
What are the plans for the rest of the year and into 2024?
We are currently working on a second line for the concrete screw, with a basic range and approval, in order to be able to offer an economical solution to customers who do not require the highest loads and best approvals. We are nevertheless very proud to be able to provide this product line with a very good and highquality approval and to be able to manufacture it as well as our other products in Germany.
Furthermore, our stainless steel A4 concrete screw TSM LT A4 will be supplemented by two additional approvals by the end of the year. This screw will be integrated into the masonry approval, but then the screw will also receive a further approval as a multiple fixing in concrete and prestressed concrete hollow slabs. There will also be two exciting additions early next year. Our new internally threaded concrete screw TSM Multiground, which can be screwed completely flush with the surface of concrete and will receive approval as a multiple fastener in concrete as well as load recommendations in a wide variety of substrates, will be a great addition to our range.
The screw was developed to offer another internally threaded solution in sizes M6, M8 and M10 for extremely fast, simple and economical solutions such as ceiling suspensions. One of the aims of this product is to replace the dropin anchor that has been in use up to now. Anyone who has ever used a setting tool and a hammer to set dropin anchors overhead knows exactly why we have developed this product.
We’re also already working on an approval for our aerated concrete screw TSM PB to meet demand.

LOOK OUT FOR THE TRENDS AND OPPORTUNITIES
BHETA’s exclusive quarterly opportunity to see what the market data is saying about the DIY and home and garden improvement market in 2023 is available to members now. And it’s a fascinating picture of a sector still up on prepandemic levels by 3.5% (not to mention a new but here to stay proDIY, home / garden improvement mindset amongst consumers), but like everything else being squeezed by the rises in costofliving.
What is very clear when you drill into the figures, however is that not every category and not every channel is being affected in the same way. Some are down and some are signif
icantly up, so it has never been more important to be fleet of foot and back the trends as they manifest and change.
Let’s start with the top line statistics. Based on 2023 Q1 and thanks to BHETA’S partner, GlobalData, while smaller DIY and garden projects are down by 1.8%, big home improvement projects involving bathrooms and kitchens have seen growth of 0.7%. Tools and fixings specifically declined 1.6% in the same period. However, while consumers are cutting back, and with a stagnant housing market, there has been reduced demand for DIY projects as people look to forgo or delay. However, while decorative DIY has been impacted, Heavyside and Lightside DIY much less so as they are protected from strong demand from trade. Across the sectors, and maybe not surprisingly, we are seeing evidence of the more premium retailers in the home improvement sector suffering more than the discounter brands who are generally seeing growth across the same categories.
Performance: Home Enhancement in Q1 2023
76 torque-expo.com
The DIY and home and garden improvement sector is up on pre-Covid numbers. Will Jones, Chief Operating Officer at BHETA – a leading UK Trade Association for manufacturers, importers, and distributors in the home improvement and building products sectors – drills into the data...

market
While the pressure is undoubtedly evident, likely to be alleviated in some areas by summer temperatures, the key tactic for suppliers and retailers is to embrace the reasons why our sector shows both shrinkage and growth at the same time. And of course, to be adaptable in order to back the winners at any given time.
So, what is going on behind the statistics?
While consumers are worried that they may not have enough money to complete the projects they still wish to pursue, they
in ten homeowners doing work will make their homes ecofriendlier, with four of the top five eco home improvements tied to helping reduce energy consumption – eg solar panels and insulation. But it is not just about costsaving. The desire to use natural materials in home décor like timber, stone and bamboo is a major trend.
Socalled ‘part updates’ are also popular, with consumers replacing or even just painting over cupboard doors, tiles and even appliances – saving money but also waste.
Repurposing space is also a key trend. Creating better storage (up 29%), walkin wardrobes, saunas, home bars, games rooms and playrooms are all opportunities as homeowners aspire to utilise the changes made while homeworking to reengage with fun and the fulfilment of other needs. The everpopular grey is now being challenged by earthy colour palettes, curves, and broken plan has now taken over from open plan. Homeowner priorities are shifting from maximising space to optimising design, and safety, security, accessibility, cleaning and eco are big opportunities.
are looking to do less, but budget more. Despite these financial challenges, renovation is having a positive moment with nearly half of homeowners who do home improvement work at all undertaking full renovation projects. With the housing market as it is thanks to the mortgage crisis, a significant reason is that it is cheaper to do that rather than move.
There is also a big opportunity for green improvements. Nine
CONCLUSION...
The market is challenging, but the opportunities are very much available for suppliers and retailers, if consumer priorities in this rapidly changing world are fully embraced. BHETA has access not only to the data but also the trends and never has this knowledge been more important.

Thirst for tool brands expanding into drinks remains unquenched
What is it about tool brands entering the beverages market?
Makita’s cordless onsite coffee maker has been around for a few years and BLACK + DECKER is now offering a Cocktail Maker (cordless, of course). BLACK + DECKER’s beverage offering is not for the construction site, naturally, aimed at parties rather than workplace situations.
We’re used to hearing about more efficient lithium batteries providing more torque on the jobsite, squeezing more fastener connections out of a single charge, but this cocktail maker is using its cordless credentials to power through over 250 drinks per charge, including mocktails (so maybe they wouldn’t be too bad on the construction site after all).
Makita’s cordless coffee maker is the kind of product journalists idly dream about testing out, but the brand also produces microwave ovens – with a ‘shoulder strap’ accessory for approximately £5 to help construction workers lug it around. So, cold pasties are no longer par for the course on the jobsite.
Makita’s foray into areas normally reserved for brands that focus on kitchenware may seem a quirky move and it’s probably safe to say that Makita isn’t planning to drop its line in drills in favour of focusing on other beverage and foodrelated equipment. But it’s a canny move that generates interest, some mirth and definitely a good deal of positive PR for these brands.
