The Secret Agent

Of Mice and Men

Middlemarch

This 1907 novel deals with highly topical subjects: terrorism, espionage and corrupt politics. Here, London is Condrad’s ‘heart of darkness’ and gradually the novel came to be considered one of his finest, with a prescient view of the 21st Century.

One of Steinbeck’s most popular works and taught in schools under the mistaken idea that it is somehow ‘simple’!

This novel is so immense that it is impossible to film except as a long television adaptation. This is ‘the big novel’ of the 19th Century English literature and Eliot’s supreme achievement. This is the novel that Tolstoy said made his own work possible. ‘It’s all one web’ says one character of 19th Century England and Eliot spins it so that no one part is untouched by any other. Come and enjoy her supreme achievement.

By Joseph Conrad

By John Steinbeck

This is one of the works in which the ‘American Dream’ is reduced to having a little piece of land and being left alone to enjoy it. Here Steinbeck gives a compelling voice to the lonely and the dispossessed and shows that friendship is the most precious asset anyone has.

By George Eliot

The World of Oscar Wilde

An exploration of the works of Oscar Wilde and of his amazing but short life which first wooed and then lost a huge public audience. To be set with the wonderful new film, ‘The Happy Prince’ a labour of love by Rupert Everett, which took him 10 years to achieve. Come and spend a day with Darling Oscar.

With the 1997 (12A) film starring Bob Hoskins and Patricia Arquette at 2.30pm (1hr 33mins)

With the 1939 (PG) film starring Burgess Meredith and Betty Field at 2.30pm (1hr 46mins)

Jazz In The Cellar Bar Presents

Stamford Shoestring Theatre Presents A new play from the works of P. G. Wodehouse by the Goodale Brothers

Jeeves and Wooster in Perfect Nonsense

‘Leave your troubles outside’ and relax into Wodehouse’s world of ridiculous problems and juvenile behaviour with the marvellous Jeeves ready, as ever, at the last possible moment, to solve all. Encouraged by his drinking pals, after a spot of well received raconteuring, Bertie Wooster decides to embark on a one man show about the ‘perfectly frightful weekend’ he has recently spent at Totleigh Towers. His loyal man, Jeeves, aware that this venture is likely to go horribly wrong, stands by to assist with additional help from Seppings. These three romp their way through Bertie’s usual, eccentric muddle of a life donning many guises to illustrate his tale. No one suffers greatly from Bertie’s involvement but they certainly feel the breeze.

Broadcast live from the National Theatre to cinemas, this new version of August Strinberg’s play Miss Julie is written by Polly Stenham and stars Vanessa Kirby and Eric Kofi Abrefa. It remains shocking and fiercely relevant in its new setting of contemporary London. Wild and newly single, Julie throws a late night party. In the kitchen, Jean and Kristina clean up as the celebration heaves above them. Crossing the threshold, Julie initiates a power game with Jean – which rapidly descends into a savage fight for survival. Butcher, Baker, Candlestick-maker Artisans and Tradespeople in Stamford A look at the various occupations of the working people of Stamford through the ages. This will be the first in an occasional series about the crafts, artisans and tradespeople of the town and area, as there is far too much information to be compressed into one talk. Philippa examines how the town reacted to the ‘Great European War’ from August 1914 to the peace in July 1919, and what contributions its people made towards it. She looks at the local men who went to war and how they fared, how their families coped with deprivation at home, and the long aftermath of its effects.

Withering Looks

“It’s a joy – very very funny” The Guardian LipService - Britain’s favourite literary lunatics, are back with their cult Brontë spoof Withering Looks. Specially reworked for the 200th anniversary year of Emily’s birth, the classic comic duo, Maggie Fox and Sue Ryding, just couldn’t resist the urge to dust off their crinolines, wear flattering bonnets and sit at rain-lashed windows in a pale and decorative manner. Don’t miss the chance to share in the silliness too! Withering Looks takes an “authentic” look at the lives and works of the Brontë sisters – well, two of them actually, Anne’s just popped out for a cup of sugar. Peopled with many of the characters we know and love, Maggie and Sue move effortlessly from frock to frock coat. Withering Looks won a Manchester Evening News Theatre Award and the Critics’ award for Comedy at the Edinburgh Festival. LipService recently won the Stage Door Foundation award for Excellence. www.lipservicetheatre.co.uk Friday 28 September 7.30pm | Recommended for ages 10 years+ Tickets £12 (£10) £8 groups and under 26s 10 Box Office 01780 763203 I www.stamfordartscentre.com

Unknown to him, it’s the women of Windsor who really pull the strings, orchestrating Falstaff’s comeuppance amidst a theatrical smorgasbord of petty rivalries, jealousies and over-inflated egos. For a fat Englishman, a Welshman and a Frenchman, the only way is Windsor…

Beyond Feminism Live In The Cellar Bar

Mike Alderson is a poet, a retired nurse and a liberationist. He was first introduced to the Women’s Liberation Movement in 1967 by his elder sister, Jane. The ideas that men benefit from women’s oppression divides; that all men are rapists creates fear, anger and justified violence; women-only meetings and networking is anti-democratic. Acknowledging the violence in society, Mike challenges these ideas and the way they have been used. Mike asserts that only solidarity among all those against oppression can change oppression. We need open debate, not put-downs and shunning. There will be an open-mic for differing views… Wednesday 3 October 8pm Tickets £6 (includes £1 off first drink voucher*)

Soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek sings the role of the gunslinging heroine, alongside Jonas Kaufmann as the outlaw who steals her heart. Marco Armiliato conducts. ‘Storytelling at its finest…’ The Stage Over a century after they were first published, the ghost stories of M R James retain their power to terrify and amuse. This gripping one man show retells two of the eeriest.

This multi-award winning drama by Alan Bennett, The Madness of George III, will be broadcast live to cinemas, in National Theatre Live’s first ever broadcast from Nottingham Playhouse. The cast of this new production includes Olivier Award-winners Mark Gatiss in the title role and Adrian Scarborough (Gavin and Stacey).

Lost Hearts was among the first stories the author wrote and it offers one of his most memorable villains, the predatory scholar Mr Abney. Off the Grid By David Lane

The Settlers

The Pop/Folk Sound of the 60s In the Ballroom

The 1960s saw the emergence of the pop/folk sound, loved by so many and helped to establish British acts such as The Seekers in the minds of the world.

Connor and Kelly are brother and sister. They share the same birthday, but ten years apart. Since the disappearance of their parents, when Kelly was three, they have been dependent on each other for survival. But what happens when you discover you’ve made the wrong decision? Forced to back down, do you sacrifice your beliefs in order to stay together?

After experimenting with a change of sound in the early 1970s, Steve and Patty joined the band and they reignited their original acoustic style. Now, you can experience the fabulous sound of The Settlers with Dave Smith on guitar/vocals and Tony Harris on bass/banjo/guitar!

Developed in partnership with young people, Off the Grid is an immersive new play by David Lane that navigates a shocking and heart breaking human story through the underbelly of a hidden society.Includes post-show Q&A. WINNER OF SHOW OF THE WEEK AWARD, VAULT FESTIVAL 2018 “Non-stop entertainment… I cried, I laughed and at the end, I rose to my feet” View from the Cheap Seats “Funny, uplifting and hard hitting. Bicycles and Fish is an impressive debut imbued with warmth, charm and humour with a feminist gut punch” LondonPubTheatre “I have always loved fairytales. My favourite film ever was Beauty and the Beast until we learnt about Stockholm Syndrome in PSHE”. Bicycles and Fish is Katie’s hit debut one woman show about the day she stopped being a girl, aged 16, and became a woman. It’s also a fairytale. Well, sort of. It definitely has ogres, princes, a first kiss and hidden treasure. But it’s ironic. Just like Alanis Morissette. Combining comedy, storytelling and original songs, Katie delves into her past to talk about why we all need to get on board with feminism quicker because misogyny’s got a big head start.
