welcome It may come as a surprise to some of you that Anna and I have been organising the current regime of classical concerts since 2003.That makes the coming season, 2012 - 2013 our tenth. We are proud and a little surprised to have persuaded so many high quality orchestras, groups and soloists to come to Stamford. More than that, once they experience Stamford, we have had no difficulty in securing return visits. But time does not stand still. I have decided that although I have learnt much and have enjoyed the experience immensely, the need for succession planning should no longer be ignored and it is time for me to retire, handing over to a younger person. This will allow the changeover to take place over a period and as seamlessly as possible thus ensuring no disruption to the future of quality classical concerts in Stamford. We have been fortunate indeed to find in Kate Douglas, someone who shares our passion for live classical music and has had experience in the important role music agents play in promoting and developing up and coming artistes. Kate will continue to seek artistes from a variety of venues but will of course bring to bear her own ideas. She will take over from me during this season. I wish her well and I am sure you will give her every support.

Classical skyrockets and a mercurial twist This evening’s programme opens with one of Haydn’s ‘sturm und drang’ symphonies, the aptly named ‘Mercury’ which will be followed by one of his finest violin concertos, performed by the Orchestra of the Swan’s Associate Artist, Tamsin Waley-Cohen. The concert ends with another mercurial symphony, Mozart’s Symphony no 29. Mozart was particularly pleased with his ‘Mannheim skyrockets’ in the finale which sees the orchestra flying up and down their instruments. In an unlikely twist Schnittke pays homage to both composers in his Moz-art a la Haydn, reminiscent of another of Haydn’s musical jokes. “Tamsin Waley-Cohen held us rapt with daring and undaunted performances” The Times

I have no intention of disappearing from the scene. I will be one of that all important section of classical music afficionados - the audience.

“An excellent, up-for-it orchestra”

We hope you enjoy the season.
