Celebrating 25 Years SEVEN CONCERTS FOR SUMMER EVENINGS IN SOUTH WEST LINCOLNSHIRE

W

elcome to the 2018 series of Music in Quiet Places!

South Kesteven District Council is proud that Music in Quiet Places has reached the notable milestone of its 25th series! I am passionate about making the most of our arts, culture and heritage throughout the District. I know our hardworking arts centre teams look forward to welcoming you in person to this special year of Music in Quiet Places concerts!

Councillor Matthew Lee

The Leader, South Kesteven District Council

Over the last quarter century, Music in Quiet Places has visited many of the outstanding churches in South Kesteven and heard new talent as well as internationally-acclaimed musicians. We visit the venue of the very first MiQP concert, Hough-on-the-Hill, with the Gjylaci Duo but there are always fresh places to visit and this year we are delighted to present our first concert in the historic setting of St Andrew’s, Sempringham. For this special

concert, medieval specialists Joglaresa present a programme linked to that era. Also closely linked to the setting is the programme by the exciting new vocal ensemble echo who explore the architecture of the Priory Church in Deeping St James. We welcome back MiQP favourites The Carnival Band with some seasonal festivities. The series starts and ends with quartets: string repertoire with Symphonia Academica to open and Kaleidoscope closes with the appealing sound of saxophone quartet. As always, we are grateful to the incumbents, churchwarden and congregations of the host churches. Without their support these concerts could not take place. Refreshments will be available during concert intervals. These are provided by the churches and the income goes to church funds.

Quartet in B flat op 76 no 4 (‘Sunrise’) Quartet in C minor op 18 no 4 Quartet in A minor (‘Rosamunde’)

The four principals of Symphonia Academica perform three great classical works written within the span of 24 years. Haydn’s ‘Sunrise’ quartet takes its name from the opening rising figure, its sunny mood appearing throughout the piece. In one of his first quartets, Beethoven was acutely aware of the legacy of Haydn. Schubert quotes from his incidental music to Rosamunde, giving the quartet its name. The most striking feature when entering St James’ is the magnificent brass chandelier, dated 1810. Remains of the church’s Norman origins can be seen in the nave arches and are a reminder of the long-vanished Norman castle and the strategic importance of the village. In the long chancel is a highly-decorated recess formerly used as an Easter Sepulchre and the rough ladder in a corner of the nave was made from a 17th century maypole. Thursday 31 May 7.30pm W W W. The Albanian-born Gjylaci brothers have played in major concert venues and festivals across the UK and Europe. Their repertoire includes music from all around the world and across all genres. Esen-Nikolas is the leader of Northern String Quartet and artistic director of Manchester String Orchestra. Jon performs as a soloist across the country. Their popular programme includes Simaku’s arrangement of a folksong from the Albanian community in southern Italy. Nestling in the church’s impressive 15th century tower is a roughly-built Saxon tower which incorporates a rare semicircular turret with characteristically small windows. Inside, a solid doorway gives access to a circular stairway. The rest of the church dates mainly from the 13th century although the nave roof was raised in the 15th century to accommodate the clerestory. Carved into the stone seats in the porch are games boards, perhaps used to while away the hours.

ST MARY & ST PETER'S CHURCH, HARLAXTON, NG32 1HB PRIORY CHURCH, DEEPING ST JAMES, PE6 8NP

From the riotous pre-Lent carnivals of medieval Europe to the midwinter revelry of the Lord of Misrule, The Carnival Band weaves folk, historical and contemporary strands from England and abroad into a rich tapestry of seasonal celebration. Catchy ballads, barn-storming dance tunes and settings of texts ranging from the middle ages to the present are played on an extraordinary mix of instruments, including medieval shawm, renaissance cittern, Flemish bagpipes, fiddle, bass with added rich vocal harmony. The spacious church is announced by an imposing tower topped with a slender, crocketed spire. Its apparent simplicity is in marked contrast to the village’s Picturesque cottages and the might Manor. Inside, the nave arcades show the transition from late Norman to Early English style. Memorials to the owners of the original manor house, carvings on the font and medieval chantry chapels all make exploration worthwhile.

echo explore music from the 15th century to the present day inspired by and relating to architecture and technological progress, including works by Dufay, Crecquillon, Weelkes and Palestrina alongside improvisation and folk song. The eight professional singers came together in early 2017 through Genesis Sixteen, the prestigious young artists’ scheme run by Harry Christophers and The Sixteen. Following highly acclaimed launch concerts in London and Birmingham, they have appeared in festivals and collaborated with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The magnificent church of St James was originally part of a 12th century Benedictine priory, dissolved in 1539, with a tower and spire rebuilt in the 18th century following the collapse of the original. The impressive nave with its massive pillars is lit by large Decorated windows. Relics from the original foundation include a large font and, in the chancel, two round-headed windows and the remains of stalls for the monks.

LOVE IN TIME OF UNICORNS

Fittingly for this splendid church and its links to the Gilbertine order, which admitted both nuns and monks, Joglaresa presents a medieval programme, mainly from England, including music from convents. Known for their lively and dynamic concerts, Joglaresa’s programmes are a product of the performers’ varied backgrounds as well as research into performance styles.

'Joglaresa are at the forefront of singers and instrumentalists whose study of improvisation and ethnomusicology informs and shapes their imaginative re-creation of medieval music-making.' The Times ancient doors with decorative iron scrollwork. Please note that access to this stunning church is down a long country lane, so please be careful to avoid the potholes.

Close to the church is the site of the mid-12th century monastic buildings of the Gilbertine order; St Andrew’s was built later that century in what was then a thriving village. Much of the interior retains its Norman architecture, including massive pillars, but more was lost in the 18th century when the chancel and transepts were demolished. The south doorway is resplendent with Norman chevron carvings and the

A musical trip through Europe including music by Debussy, Dvorak, Bach and Grieg. Described by The Times as ‘irresistible’, Kaleidoscope’s approach is built on the distinct creative personalities of its members, with engaging programmes that blend classical and contemporary music to make full use of the versatile and expressive sounds of the saxophone . The quartet’s work has led to multiple awards and high profile performances at venues such as the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room and Bridgewater Hall. St John’s has been described as the finest of the many remarkable churches along the edge of the Lincolnshire fens. Its lofty tower, with tall pinnacles and gargoyles, rises from the centre of the cross-shaped church below and is a landmark for miles around. Inside, the capitals of the pillars and arcades are richly decorated with foliage and faces. The 15th-century font is particularly notable and the light radiating from the Victorian stained glass adds an air of mystery to the interior.

I FAGIOLINI

ST WULFRAM'S CHURCH, GRANTHAM, NG31 6RR MIXED VOCAL SALAD (AND A SIDE ORDER OF SINGING SCIENCE)

I Fagiolini are known the world over for their vivid performances of characterful choral music. This concert features staggeringly beautiful Renaissance pieces – plangent laments by Tomkins and Monteverdi along with a surprisingly boisterous hunt for a stag with full sound effects, like a Breughel picture come to life. In a similar spirit but from the last century, Benjamin Britten marries graphically descriptive medieval texts with humour and power, there’s some Flanders & Swann and an aural strip cartoon from 1966. In addition, the group combines with local students to show some of the science behind singing. (The noises you make are also a good way to get a seat on a crowded bus.) The concert also includes a special short performance of some investigation into how science works in music by children from local schools put together with I Fagiolini's director, Robert Hollingworth.
