BONJOUR TRISTESSE
BY FRANCOIS SAGAN Dr Jane Mackay’s talk this month will be Bonjour Tristesse by Francoise Sagan. Francoise Sagan’s first novel was published when the author was only 18 and it became a huge international best-seller. The novel explores the tragic consequences of a hedonistic and selfindulgent lifestyle, both on those who indulge it and on their victims. Stay for the beautiful film (separately ticketed) ‘Bonjour Tristesse’ (PG) starring Deborah Kerr, David Niven & Jean Seberg (1958 1hr 30mins) 2.30pm TUE 9 JAN

BY KAZUO ISHIGURO This year’s award of the Nobel Prize to Ishiguro requires our attention. Better known for an earlier novel ‘The Remains of the Day’, it feels time to look at his work to date and to concentrate on this later dystopian novel in the tradition of Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’. This is a timely horror story about genetics by the gentlest of writers. Come and explore why the Nobel choice is so well justified.
BY ARTHUR MILLER Miller’s best known play is, ostensibly, about the witch hunts in Salem and the play in which he explores most thoroughly the nature of courage in the face of terrible fear. Miller’s directly linking the prosecution of the innocent...2 centuries before...with the hysteria of the contemporary McCarthy trials made for powerful reactions across America. This is his play about the dignity of the private man and his need for honour at all costs.

PUCCINI Puccini’s thrilling story of love, terror, the abuse of power, and the unquenchable longing for freedom. Sonya Yoncheva stars as the titular prima donna, alongside Vittorio Grigolo as her artist lover and Bryn Terfel as the villainous police chief—one of his signature roles. Andris Nelsons conducts.

Now Graham, minus purple leather jacket and fawn slacks (but fully clothed!) steps out from behind the keyboard to plug in his guitar and sing his own songs: revelatory, humorous and quirky still, sometimes sad. Graham will naturally talk about Shuttleworth as well as his other comic characters, plus his pivotal acting role on Coronation Street, and becoming a teenage pop star as Jilted John.
Seven consecutive Strawbs albums made it into America’s Billboard Top 200-if we need any more confirmation of how durable and exciting good music can be then Dave Cousins, Dave Lambert and Chas Cronk fronting today’s Strawbs is surely it. Definitely not a band to miss!
Hear the tale of the night: how jazz legend, George Melly, broke into Graham’s bedsit; and of the time he bought a packet of bread sauce with a famous Hollywood actor, poignantly recalled in the ballad, Mark Rylance Was My Lodger.

DONIZETTI The poor country boy Nemorino is in love with Adina, a confident landowner, but she is way out of his league—financially and otherwise. But when he buys a ‘love potion’ from a travelling quack, the results are rather more than he bargained for. Donizetti’s beloved masterpiece combines deft comic timing with touching emotional depth. The production stars Matthew Polenzani, who enthralled Met audiences as Nemorino in 2013 with his moving ‘Una furtiva lagrima.’ Rising South African soprano Pretty Yende is the spirited Adina, Davide Luciano makes his Met debut as the arrogant soldier Belcore, and Ildebrando D’Arcangelo is the potion-peddling Doctor Dulcamara. AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE
IN A NEW VERSION BY REBECCA LENKIEWICZ FROM A LITERAL TRANSLATION BY CHARLOTTE BARSLUND The idealistic Dr Stockmann discovers dangerous flaws in the new spa development that promises huge rewards for his home town and its inhabitants. As he battles against vested interests, important questions are raised about personal loyalty, press freedom and the greater good. With wit and considerable humour, the play explores these moral complexities, while still honouring the dark heart of the original. This fast-paced, pared-down version of Ibsen’s classic by Rebecca Lenkiewicz packs a powerful punch in its treatment of a story with continuing relevance today.

MARCH IT’S 250 YEARS SINCE THE CONSTRUCTION OF STAMFORD THEATRE
Started in 1766 and complete in 1768, the new theatre cost £806 and was paid for from the pockets of actor, James (Jemmy) Whitley, plus his friend and stonemason William Clark. Jemmy Whitley was proprietor-manager of theatres at Derby, Nottingham, Bedford, Wolverhampton and Worcester while being connected with another dozen. The first performance on 14 March 1768 was the comic opera Love in A Village. During the next 100 years many famous names appeared: William Charles Macready, Charles Kemble, Sarah Siddons, Edmund Kean, James Sheridan Knowles and Mr Braham and Mrs Stirling from Drury Lane with more and more continuing to grace the stage today. In celebration, we’re giving away a £250 voucher to one lucky drama ticket purchaser. Look out for your post-show email for how to enter! (Terms and conditions apply). Taken from The Stamford Arts Centre Story by J. Martin Goodwin and The Stamford Theatre Souvenir Programme 1978.

Her intention is to stimulate students’ insight and inventiveness; to guide them to combine imagination with observation and memory and so for each to pursue his/her personal voice. Promoting awareness of contemporary artists and past modern masters and the technical skills of mixing and applying paint, whatever medium, are very much part of the teaching. In preparation for painting it is suggested that students draw; in the landscape, garden or home. All abilities welcome, just bring an open mind.
