Welcome Once again we are opening and closing our Classical concert series, thanks to the support of Orchestras Live, with orchestral concerts. Sinfonia Viva return with a baroque programme of familiar pieces and we end the season with the young and highly versatile Aurora Orchestra. Their programme includes a work written in the same century as the Stamford Ballroom was built and a piece commissioned by the Carnegie Hall in 2011. We are joined by three string ensembles: the Elias String Quartet, the Leonore Piano Trio and La Serenissima. The Elias are currently working on a complete Beethoven String Quartet cycle, and their programme includes Beethoven’s only original composition for string quintet. The Leonore Trio’s programme contains a new work, ‘Trio Holkham Beach’, which was premiered at the North Norfolk Festival in 2012. La Serenissima, who are one of the leading exponents of the music of Vivaldi and his contemporaries, will give a concert with a programme called Great Sonatas of Venice. In April and May there are contrasting British and French programmes. The British programme called Time and the Seasons is a recital by the popular baritone Roderick Williams. In the French programme, the actress Maggie Steed plays the role of Winoretta Singer, who had a salon in Paris at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. She will introduce the pieces describing her relationship with the composers and their works. It is an excellent introduction to late 19th and early and 20th century French repertoire.

A brilliant selection of classics is in store as Sinfonia Viva directed by Benedict Holland makes a welcome return to Stamford Arts Centre. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No.3, for strings alone, features dramatic and complex interaction between the different instruments. Vivaldi’s vivid musical representation of a fierce storm, La Tempesta di Mare (The Storm at Sea) is an energetic and inspiring work. It parallels The Four Seasons in its stirring depiction of the forces of nature unleashed and gives free rein to the violin soloist. The elegant and memorable Canon and Gigue is the secular work for which German Baroque era composer Pachelbel – who produced much religious music – would become best known. With much of his output lost to time, the Canon remained undiscovered for two hundred years after his death in 1706. The piece resurfaced in 1919 and assumed its modern form in the late 1920s. Cervante’s novel Don Quixote gave rise to two musical interpretations by the composer Telemann. Tonight we hear his first, popularly called the Don Quixotte Suite in G major, the movements of which closely follow the novel’s structure.

Celebrating its tenth birthday in 2012, this highly original Clarinet, Bassoon and Piano trio has won national acclaim. The trio showcases the talents of Janet Hilton ‘rare lightness and grace’ (Financial Times), Perkins ‘a most alluring sound’ (BBC Music Magazine) and Briggs ‘exceptional elegance and taste’ (Daily Telegraph) who also perform solo items in a superbly varied evening of music making. The Ensemble’s repertoire includes neglected masterpieces by Hurlstone, Glinka and others, alongside timeless gems such as Beethoven’s own arrangement for Trio of his delightful Septet.
Handel’s Concerto Grosso No.7 is one of a dozen he composed over a short period of three weeks during September-October 1739.

The Elias String Quartet take their name from Mendelssohn’s oratorio, Elijah, Elias in German form, and have quickly established themselves as one of the most intense and vibrant quartets of their generation. They perform around the world, collaborating with many different artists. The Quartet was formed in 1998 at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester where they worked closely with the late Dr. Christopher Rowland. They also spent a year studying at the Hochschule in Cologne with the Alban Berg Quartet. With the support of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust, the Elias String Quartet are embarking on their Beethoven project: learning and performing all the Beethoven string quartets, with cycles starting in 2012/13 in various venues including Bristol, London and Southampton, and documenting their journey, learnings and findings on a dedicated website, www.thebeethovenproject.com

The Leonore Piano Trio brings together three internationally acclaimed artists whose piano trio performances under the umbrella of Ensemble 360 were met with such enthusiastic responses that they decided to form a piano trio in its own right. The Leonore Trio has already given a concert series in Italy, followed by a three-week tour of New Zealand, where their concert in Hamilton was broadcast on Radio New Zealand. The Trio also played to and coached a group of young musicians as part of the Sistema Aotearoa programme, gave a concert in the New Zealand Parliament, and were adjudicators of the Royal Over-Seas League New Zealand Chamber Music Competition. They gave the first performance of “Holkham Beach”, a piece written for and dedicated to the trio by Simon Rowland-Jones in 2012. They have been asked by the eminent composer, David Matthews to record his three Piano Trios.

La Serenissima is one of the UK’s leading historical performance ensembles. The ensemble founded in 1994 by the violinist Adrian Chandler took its name from La Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia (Italian for The Most Serene Republic of Venice). Whilst works such as The Four Seasons form an important part of their repertoire, their programmes include not only a host of instrumental rarities but also full scale operas. Works by lesser known Italian composers also feature in their programmes. La Serenissima has appeared at many of the UK’s leading venues and festivals including the York Early Music, the Bath Bach, Bath International and Lichfield Festivals. They have performed at St George’s Bristol, the Snape Maltings, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and Wigmore Hall as well as appearances in Germany, Israel, Italy, Mexico and Spain to great acclaim. Since its first CD release in 2003, La Serenissima has been universally applauded by publications including Gramophone Magazine, BBC Music Magazine and the Strad. Roderick Williams encompasses a wide repertoire from baroque to contemporary music, in the opera house, on the concert platform and in recital. He enjoys relationships with all the major UK opera houses and is particularly associated with the baritone roles of Mozart. Roderick Williams has sung concert repertoire with all the BBC orchestras, and many other ensembles including the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Philharmonia, London Sinfonietta, Manchester Camerata, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hallé and Britten Sinfonia. His many festival appearances include the BBC Proms, Aldeburgh and Melbourne. Roderick Williams is an accomplished recital artist who can be heard at venues and festivals including the Wigmore Hall, the Perth Concert Hall and on Radio 3, where he has participated on Iain Burnside’s Voices programme.

At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the Paris salon was a centre of hedonistic social and artistic life and none was finer than the one run by Winnaretta Singer, heiress to the Singer sewing machine fortune. Yet this formidable and enigmatic woman, who was a talented musician and artist herself, did not merely host performances for entertainment and kudos, but her energies transformed the salon into a crucial creative force that became the birthplace of pioneering music by Fauré, Debussy and many others. We are delighted to welcome actress Maggie Steed who will, in the guise of Winnaretta, introduce this exclusive world inhabited by Proust, Diaghilev, Isadora Duncan, Jean Cocteau, Virginia Woolf, Colette and many others. Over the course of just eight years, Aurora Orchestra has established itself as the most significant new British orchestra in a generation. Aurora combines the very highest artistic quality with eclectic and innovative programming, adventurous collaboration across musical genre and art form, and ground-breaking new approaches to concert presentation. For this programme, Aurora principal players explore chamber works by Ravel, Adès and Mozart including Ravel’s unusual septet - Introduction and Allegro – which was the result of intense competition between two Parisian instrument manufacturers. To showcase their new chromatic pedal harp, Pleyel commissioned Debussy, who wrote his Danse sacrée et danse profane, meanwhile Erard responded by commissioning Ravel to exploit the expressive potential of their new double-action pedal harp. The outcome is almost a harp concerto in miniature; the languorous introduction achieves a kaleidoscope of orchestral sonority with just seven instruments, whilst the Allegro is sultry and sensuous. Adès’ dazzling string quartet The Quarters is a programmatic trajectory moving from one dusk to the next, characterised by a wide range of moods and textures. The programme closes with Mozart’s Gran Partita, a piece described as ‘glorious and grand, excellent and sublime!’ following its premiere in 1785 and is without doubt one of his great masterpieces. A pair of minuets, written for 12 wind instruments and double bass, it explores the timbres of different instrumental combinations to dazzling effect, as do the ingeniously witty variations on a theme.
