HENRY MILLER ‘THE COLOSSUS OF MAROUSSI’ For many years a banned writer for his ‘Sexus’, ‘Plexus’ and ‘Nexus’ trilogy and his ‘Tropic of Cancer’ and ‘Tropic of Capricorn’ books, come and meet a very different Henry Miller. Simon Godwin makes his RSC debut to direct Shakespeare’s exuberant romantic comedy. Valentine and Proteus are best friends, until they fall in love with the same girl. HISTORY LECTURES BY DON CHISWELL WILLIAM CECIL, LORD BURGHLEY

THE OLD CONTEMPTIBLES

THE BATTLE OF BANNOCKBURN

Chief adviser to Elizabeth I as Secretary of State from 1558 and Lord High Treasurer from 1572 helped guide England through perilous times. He was largely responsible for the religious settlement of 1558, took a key role in the proceedings leading to the execution of Mary Queen of Scots, countered foreign and domestic threats to the Realm and did much to promote trade and industry. On his death, a grieving Elizabeth was convinced that ‘No prince in Europe hath such a councillor as I have in mine’.

The story of the British Expeditionary Force (B.E.F.) the ‘contemptible little army’ sent to defend Belgium at the outbreak of war in 1914.

Forget Braveheart. What really happened 700 years ago at Bannockburn, the most famous of all the battles of the Scottish Wars of Independence? How did Robert the Bruce’s army come to fight and defeat the numerically superior English of Edward II and what were the consequences?

THE BAND FROM COUNTY HELL

FIRST DO NO HARM

The Band From County Hell are a five-piece Celtic rock band and have been described as one of the most exciting and original Celtic bands on today’s circuit. The present line up of the band includes three members of the McLelland family with Ben McLelland leading the melody on fiddle, whistle and accordion. www.bfch.co.uk

Here at Stamford Arts Centre we now have a thriving poetry scene! We host free monthly writing workshops and Pint of Poetry events. Join the new poet laureate Bill Taylor and local poets for a relaxed Pint of Poetry in our cellar bar, just turn up and enjoy the poetry or have a go at performing your own! Writing group 6.30-8.30pm Burley Room Mon 8 Sept, 13 Oct, 10 Nov Pint of Poetry 8pm Cellar Bar Wed 24 Sep, 29 Oct, 26 Nov

This powerful, fast-moving play by Lincolnshire playwright Hilary Spiers dramatises a forgotten corner of local history. Harold and Maud Leggett arrive in a small market town in the Fens where Harold is to practise as the town’s only ‘Panel’ doctor, under Lloyd George’s controversial health and welfare reforms. The established medical fraternity, led by the redoubtable Dr Ridgeway, is firmly opposed to the new system and soon Harold and Ridgeway are at loggerheads. The consequences are catastrophic.

Set in Accrington in 1914 to1916 the fictional story is based on real lives of the women left behind during WW1; having to adapt to new patterns of life, facing financial and sexual deprivation, undergoing the social changes resulting from the absence of many men. Often funny, ultimately sad, the play paints a moving and powerful picture of civilian life during war-time. Its unique quality is seeing war through the eyes of private soldiers and their women rather than officers and their ladies. An amateur performance by our resident theatre company. CONTEMPORARY DRAWING and PAINTING

SCULPTURE CLASS

LIFE DRAWING

Catherine encourages students to transform or interpret rather than merely record and imitate. The intention is to stimulate insight and inventiveness; to combine imagination with observation and memory and assist the student in finding his/her personal voice. We will be starting with landscapes: please bring drawings if you have. All abilities welcome, just bring an open mind. Any medium may be used. If you need to buy painting materials, please wait until the first session when Catherine can advise you. There is an art shop near the arts centre. Bring a Pilot ‘V’ Fineliner water-soluble pen, A3 sketchbook of cartridge, weight 180, 200 or 22gsm and support for sketchbook ie thin piece of mdf approx 43 x 32 cm.

Join in on a Wednesday evening or Friday morning. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, sculptor and artist Jonty Meyer will teach you skills to advance your artistry. Students will learn to create a sculpture in clay working from a model. Beginning with building the armature, Jonty teaches you to recognise the basic forms, planes, symmetry and proportions. Once completed, your sculpture will be prepared for firing in the kiln for you to pick up on a later date.

Take this opportunity to be guided in drawing the nude figure. Experienced artists and beginners are equally welcome to this challenging but rewarding class.
