LITERATURE AT LUNCHTIME WITH DR JANE MACKAY
HISTORY LECTURES BY DON CHISWELL
ARTHUR MILLER’S ‘A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE’
One of Miller’s most powerful plays, first produced in New York in 1955, explores the immigrant Italian community and the honour code which they have brought with them to a new land. Illiterate Eddie Carbone has to progress to self-discovery, at the cost of tragedy to his family. With the Young Vic’s encore satellite screening (sold out) Tues 5 May - Talk 12.30pm Talks £6.50 (£6) Screening £10
HARPER LEE’S ‘TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD’
This classic deserves a reappraisal as it deals with racism in a way that is even more relevant today than it was in the days before Martin Luther King. Come and meet some of the wonderful characters, based on Lee herself, her brother and her father, and on a real court case in which her father was involved...plus a wonderful portrait of Truman Capote as a small boy. Tues 2 Jun - Talk 12.30pm, Film 2.30pm Talks £6.50 (£6) Film £5.50
TENNESSEE WILLIAMS’ THE ROMAN SPRING OF MRS STONE
Williams was so impressed by Vivien Leigh’s performance in his play, “A Streetcar Named Desire”, that he wrote this story with her in mind. Set in Rome, we follow the last months of an acclaimed actress, who as come to the end of beauty and, for her, the end of life. This talk was cancelled in the previous brochure. Tues 7 Jul - Talk 12.30pm Talks £6.50 (£6) No film

THE WATERLOO CAMPAIGN
2015 marks the two hundredth anniversary of the Emperor Napoleon’s return from exile on the island of Elba to Paris and the momentous events that followed. Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo “A near run thing” was the battle which finally ended the Napoleonic dream, if not the legend. Perhaps more a battle Napoleon lost rather than Wellington won? Written firmly set in the 1960s and among the collection of writings that Graham Greene called ‘entertainments’ (as opposed to novels).
Garlands and Mobiles Sat 6 Jun 9.30am - 12.30pm
Henry Pulling, retired bank manager and dahlia fanatic, is a careful bachelor with little to occupy his days. We meet him at his mother’s funeral, an event of ‘agreeable excitement’, for the colour it adds to his somewhat drab existence.
BY HENRY GREENE & ADAPTED BY GILES HAVERGAL STAMFORD SHOESTRING THEATRE
In partnership with Live and Learn CIC and funded by Lincolnshire County Councils’ adult learning programme. Suitable for complete beginners or those with some experience of decoupage.
Bunting is not all about fabric triangles. This session explores other techniques working with paper, different shaped fabric pieces and hand stitching. Do bring along some cotton fabrics of your choice.
These are not just for children. Handsewn from fabric and felt, they can look fabulous all over the home. The themes will be circles, flowers and leaves.
Henry joins his Aunt Augusta’s travel plans for the journey of a lifetime. Will he decide that life is worth living at any cost? We follow his adventures in this much-loved, black comedy as he travels far and wide and finds out.

HOTBUCKLE PRODUCTIONS Following on from the success of David Copperfield ‘superb... a master class in stage adaptation’, Les Miserables ‘…pure brilliance’ and Great Expectations‘ …outstanding’, the Regency world explodes into life with Hotbuckle’s trademark ensemble style. Beautifully romantic, touchingly funny and often unbearably poignant, Austen’s most personal novel is brought to the stage. Anne Elliot and Frederick Wentworth were once hopelessly in love. Persuaded by her family that he is not of her standing, she ends their engagement and he leaves for the sea. Anne soon realises her mistake and spends the next eight years regretting her decision. The now wealthy Wentworth returns to seek a wife. Treating Anne with cold indifference, she can only watch as he courts another. But will he ever forgive her? Sat 23 May 7.30pm

GERMAINE GREER
OUTDOOR PAINTING WITH CATHERINE HEADLEY
THE DISAPPEARING WOMAN
Forty years ago it seemed that women were about to take their rightful place in the world. Today, when you open the newspaper you find that news is still made by men in suits. The female most likely to be seen in the sports pages will be a horse and women’s flesh is not allowed. As soon as girls accept the size, role and shape of adult women they begin to disappear. This event gives the audience the unique chance to hear Germain Greer attempt to explain why and to suggest ideas for change, as well as answering those burning questions you have been longing to throw…serious or lighthearted. Expect this unique close encounter with Germaine to be candid, enlightening, and highly entertaining.
AT KIRBY HALL
Kirby Hall stands in a valley in Northamptonshire countryside, stunning, atmospheric and offering a delightful challenge to the artist. Capture in pen and wash one of the fine gateways with iron balcony, giant pilasters and windows open to the sky or paint a part of the shadowy cloisters in the inner courtyard. From the Elizabethan garden take a section of this magnificent ruin set against the surrounding landscape. Wed 3 Jun 10am - 4pm

JULY THE THINKING DRINKERS GUIDE TO THE LEGENDS OF LIQOUR
SECOND BEST BED BY AVRIL ROWLANDS STARRING LIZ GRAND DIRECTED BY CHRIS JAEGER
Following a sell-out, critically-acclaimed run at The Edinburgh Festival in 2014, the Thinking Drinkers bring their brand-new show to Stamford.
When Shakespeare died, he famously left his wife Anne only one thing – the second best bed. This superb one-woman play, full of both humour and pathos, has received great critical acclaim since its premier at the Swan Theatre Worcester in 2012.
At a time when alcohol finds itself in the cross-hairs of the do-gooders gun, “The Thinking Drinker’s Guide to the Legends of Liquor” offers a discerning drinking defence and proves that, contrary to common perception, a whole lot of life’s answers can be discovered at the bottom of a glass.
Liz Grand stars as Anne Hathaway on the night of Shakespeare’s funeral. The wake has finished, the mourners have all gone home, leaving Anne to remember her life with the most talented playwright the world has ever seen. Or was he? Did he write the plays? His widow would know if anybody did. Wouldn’t she?
“For serious and not so serious devotees of legal recreational consumables, the ‘Thinking Drinkers Guide’ is your bible” - Dan Aykroyd “The most entertaining free drinks event I’ve ever been to” - Dom Joly
“Lifts the lid on a Tudor can of worms... a showcase for the towering acting skills of Liz Grand.” - Worcester News Fri 26 Jun 7.30pm

Everyman is successful, popular and riding high when Death comes calling. He is forced to abandon the life he has built and embark on a last, frantic search to recruit a friend, anyone, to speak in his defence. But Death is close behind, and time is running out. One of the great primal, spiritual myths, Everyman asks whether it is only in death that we can understand our lives. A cornerstone of English drama since the 15th century, it now explodes onto the stage in a startling production with words by Carol Ann Duffy, Poet Laureate, and movement by Javier De Frutos.

MONDAY ART CLASS
CONTEMPORARY DRAWING and PAINTING
SCULPTURE CLASS
Get inspired! Friendly afternoon drop-in sessions for both beginners and improvers with qualified art teacher, heather, who will help you develop your drawing and painting skills. Term starts with observation drawing in pencil, charcoal or pastels and each week there is a Still Life or floral theme to work from. There is a range of resources available on the work of both modern and traditional artists. Focusing mainly on painting in acrylics, we welcome anyone wanting to work in watercolour or oils. To begin with you will need to bring an A3 sketchpad, a putty rubber and a range of pencils from 2B to 6B.
Catherine encourages students to transform or interpret rather than merely record and imitate. The intention is to stimulate insight and inventiveness; to combine imagination with observation and memory and assist the student in finding his/her personal voice. We will be starting with landscapes, please bring drawings if you have any. All abilities welcome, just bring an open mind. Any medium may be used. If you need to buy painting materials, please wait until the first session when Catherine can advise you. There is an art shop near the Arts Centre. Bring a Pilot “V” Fineliner water-soluble pen, A3 sketchbook of cartridge weight 180, 200 or 220 gsm and support for sketchbook, ie thin piece of MDF approx 43x32cm. Why not join Catherine when she goes out and about on her Painting Days, see page 10 for more info.
Join in on a Wednesday evening or Friday morning. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, sculptor and artist Jonty Meyer will teach you skills to advance your artistry. Students will learn to create a sculpture in clay working from a model.

PAINTING AND DRAWING
WOVEN CHORDS
Based around observational drawing and painting with a particular emphasis on portraiture and the human figure. There will also be occasional still life sessions to support the development of skills in estimating correct proportions, rendering tone, colour and texture and in arranging a pleasing composition.
Students of all abilities are welcome in these relaxed and friendly workshops. Experienced art teacher, David, will show you how to explore exciting and interesting topics, such as “Pictures that tell a story”-starting with drawing and finishing with your choice of media. David gives group demonstrations, visual stimuli and one-to-one tuition as needed. You will produce your own original and personal art pieces, mastering your favourite-or range of-art materials.
