MEDITATION

In 1971 a brave group of young activists set sail from Vancouver in an old fishing boat. Their mission: to stop Nixon’s atomic bomb tests in Amchitka, a tiny island off the west coast of Alaska. It was from these humble but courageous beginnings that the global organisation that we now know as Greenpeace was born. Chronicling the fascinating untold story behind the modern environmental movement, this gripping new film tells the story of eco-hero Robert Hunter and how he, alongside a group of like-minded and idealistic young friends in the ‘70s, would be instrumental in altering the way we now look at the world and our place within it.

STAMFORD YOUTH CHOIR Join our growing youth choir, meet other people who love to sing and explore a range of choral music in parts: music theatre, gospel and classic pop songs as well as classical and world music. The choir leader is popular music teacher Fergus Black. Weekly, starts Thu 10 Sep 11 years+ 6pm - 7pm £3 each - bring a friend!

AMPLIFIED SESSIONS

On the first Wednesday of each month join other young people who love music and performing for these free open-mic sessions. Bring your guitar, a poem, a full band or your technical-know-how if you’d rather help behind the scenes. Facebook.com/ AmplifiedStamford 6pm - 7.30pm Workshop

This is a live event with an exclusive screening of the film, followed by a satellite Q&A hosted by Mariella Frostrup. MEDITATIONS FOR A JOYFUL LIFE

Duology: ‘Vincent - a stranger to himself’ & ‘Eine Kleine Nachtmusik

Meditation is a path of inner transformation teaching us to how to find inner peace, contentment and satisfaction. Developing a positive outlook improves our quality of life and empowers us to help others. This talk will help us develop a deep understanding of our mind and how to transform it through meditation. Knowing our mind enables us to strengthen good qualities and discover the power of a pure mind. With Buddhist nun Gen Nyingpo who has over 20 years experience teaching and practising meditation in the context of modern life. www.meditateinpeterborough.org.uk

Chantry Dance Company presents an exhilarating evening of two compelling contemporary ballets. ‘Vincent - a stranger to himself’ is a dramatic ballet based on the life and loves of Vincent Van Gogh and pursues the man behind the self-portrait, yearning for affection, balancing genius with madness. The ballet explores the artist’s relationship with the women in his life, as well as the relationship with his one true passion - his art. ‘Eine Kleine Nachtmusik’ is set to Mozart’s famous composition and offers you, as the audience, a unique experience. The ballet is especially designed to encourage you to feel that you can create your own interpretation of the imagery you are presented with. We invite the audience to become an active interpreter, rather than passive observer, and discover the excitement in feeling free to appreciate the ballet however you wish. DON CHISWELL’S HISTORY LECTURES BOB DYLAN & THE HISTORY OF ROCK’N’ROLL

AN EVENING WITH WRITER MICHAEL GRAY This is more 1-man-show than talk. Using great records and rare footage, the author of The Bob Dylan Encyclopaedia and Song & Dance Man III traces how rock’n’roll arrived for teenager Robert Zimmerman, vanished into shallow pop by the time Dylan launched his folk career, and lured him back when he went electric, modernised rock music and revolutionised the possibilities of song.

The Battle of Agincourt 1415

This year marks the 600th anniversary of perhaps the most famous of all the battles of the Hundred Years War with France, immortalised by William Shakespeare’s play Henry V. LIL’ JIMMY REED Leon Atkins, better known as Lil’ Jimmy Reed, is the real deal, as will be attested to by anyone who has heard his stinging guitar work, gritty vocals and haunting harmonica. A tall charismatic figure, Lil’ Jimmy is one of the last of a generation of classic blues artists. Born in a shot-gun shack, near the Mississippi river, his music whether joyous or sad embodies a raw Louisiana blues tradition that has its roots in the bayous of the Deep South. Lil’ Jimmy’s music has won many awards. He has received the Alabama Blues Treasure Award and was voted Blues Harmonica Player of the Year by the West Coast Blues Hall of Fame. In 2014 he was inducted into the Alabama Blues Hall of Fame.

Lucy Worsley takes you on a journey through the weird world of the Georgian court by telling the story of her favourite queen, Caroline. Wife of the almost forgotten King George II, Caroline was the fattest, funniest and cleverest queen ever to sit on the throne. Using eighteenth century paintings, court memoirs, palace diaries and intimate letters, Lucy recounts the adventures and trials of Caroline’s life, explaining the unlikely turn of events that led an orphaned princess from a tiny German state to sit upon the British throne. The talk ties in with Lucy’s BBC Four series, ‘The First Georgians’, and her book ‘Courtiers, The Secret History of the Georgian Court’.

THE ENRAGED MUSICIAN - CULTURAL CONTRASTS IN HOGARTH’S LONDON

R Theatre

William Hogarth loved theatre, dance and music, ‘my picture was my stage and men and women my actors’ he wrote, yet the tastes of high society often exasperated him. Hogarth’s satirical prints and paintings contrast elite Italian opera, popular pantomime and the street entertainment of ballad singers, solo fiddlers and bagpipers; these contrasts embellish and reinforce his humour. An entertaining musical evening presented by Jeremy Barlow (harpsichord) with Sara Stowe (soprano, percussion) and Sharon Lindo (violin, bagpipes). Sun 27 Sep 7.30pm £14 (£12)
