SEPTEMBER LITERATURE AT LUNCHTIME WITH DR JANE MACKAY THE TIME MACHINE BY HG WELLS
Although unsuccessfully nominated 4 times for the Nobel Prize for Literature, Wells’ influence in his time cannot be underestimated. He has been called our first science fiction writer and ‘The Time Machine’ is just the first of four science fiction novels which came out in the 1890s. Let’s explore his wonderful visionary world and marvel that we managed to ignore his clear warnings! Followed by the 1960 release of The Time Machine (PG) starring Rod Taylor and Alan Young (1hr 30mins approx). Please note Dr Jane’s talk and film take place in the Ballroom due to the theatre refurbishment. TUE 6 SEPT Talk 12.30pm | Film 2.30pm BALLROOM
ANIMAL FARM BY GEORGE ORWELL
This talk will examine Orwell’s satire on Russian politics, which has never been out of print since its publication at the end of the Second World War. What is Orwell saying and why does it still matter today? And why was it so hard for Orwell to get it published? TUE 4 OCT Talk 12.30pm | No Film THEATRE
OF MICE AND MEN BY JOHN STEINBECK
This short novel by Steinbeck draws on his own personal experience of working on the land in his native California. In this little masterpiece he remembers the ‘hobos’, the travelling workers, who picked up any jobs they could get and were often badly mistreated on the farms where they took temporary work. Out of his first hand observation comes a classic of human loneliness and the necessity for kindness in the worst conditions. Followed by the 1992 film starring John Malkovich (1hr 51mins) TUE 1 NOV Talk 12.30pm | Film 2.30pm THEATRE
THE HAUNTED MAN BY CHARLES DICKENS
One of Dickens’ best Christmas stories and one which explores the connection between memory and our humanity. If we reject our memories because they make us too unhappy, do we then forget our ability to love and empathise with others? Followed by mulled wine and mince pies in the Gallery Bar/Ante Room TUE 6 DEC Talk 12.30pm THEATRE

Poetry Writing Forum Our very chilled out Writing Forum takes place on the second Monday of every month, 6.30-8.30pm, in
the Burley Room, upstairs at the Arts Centre. Join in the discussion for free and share poetry, thoughts... and even the odd glass of wine. Theatre Stamford Shoestring Theatre By David Lindsay-Abaire A funny thought-provoking drama exploring life on the wrong side of the tracks. Sharp tongued Margie Walsh has lived in a Boston neighbourhood all her life. She’s a single parent struggling to make ends meet and she’s about to get fired. Her old boyfriend Mikey Dillon made it out. Now, he’s a doctor in Boston. Could he find her a job? She corners him and meets his wife… A tough and tender play about the insurmountable class divide between those who make it ‘out’ and those who don’t. Full of heartwarming characters, humour and pathos focusing on what it really means to be ‘down on your luck’. A play for today. An amateur performance by our resident theatre company and produced by special arrangement with WME Entertainment. Contains some strong language.

For more than fifty years he has been recording everything that has happened to and around him and as the years have passed, so the burden of this documentation has grown. King Lear
Esteemed stage actor Anthony Sher returns to the realm of Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy. King Lear (Anthony Sher) has ruled for many years but age is finally catching up with him. Realising that his time will soon be at an end, he makes plans to divide his kingdom between his children, looking to pass on the burden of power. However, he cannot foresee the torment and turmoil that will ensue when he misjudges the loyalty of his own offspring, who ultimately leave him alone and desolate in the wilderness. At the end of his tether, the once mighty Lear is compelled to reflect on the state of his life and the mistakes he has made. King Lear is one of Shakespeare’s most famous and powerful works, and returning to the title role is the acclaimed Anthony Sher, a veteran stage performer who has electrified in the likes of The Tempest, Othello and The Winter’s Tale for the RSC. The Collector
By Henry Naylor 2003. Mazrat Prison, Iraq. Previously one of Saddam’s most notorious torture houses, where more than 10,000 people died, it is now under Allied command. Nassir works here, translating for the American interrogators. He’s local, pro-Western, determined to bring liberal values to his country and is about to get married to Zoya, his sweetheart. But when he is recognized by Faisal, a new prisoner and psychotic supporter of the old regime, his life becomes a living hell… The Collector is a compelling tale of murder, evil and betrayal set in occupied Iraq and born out of Henry Naylor’s own experiences of a visit to Bagram Airbase in 2003. Relevant, political theatre, it was one of the most highly-acclaimed shows at the 2014 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, winning a prestigious Fringe First Award. Following a sold-out run at London’s Arcola Theatre, it now embarks on a National Tour.

Theatre
Written & performed by Luke Wright A story of shattered friendship, class ceilings, and the hollow reality of the New Labour dream. At university the whip-smart, mercurial Johnny Bevan saves Nick, smashing his comfortable, middle class bubble and firing him up about politics, music and literature. Twenty years later, as their youthful dreams disintegrate with the social justice they hoped for, can Nick save Johnny from himself? With humour and humanity he takes British politics head on, challenging the rise of New Labour, David Cameron and the abandonment of those left behind.
