‘THE CRUCIBLE’
BY ARTHUR MILLER Miller’s best known play is, ostensibly, about the witch hunts in Salem and the play in which he thoroughly explores the nature of courage in the face of terrible fear. Miller’s directly linking the prosecution of the innocent, two centuries before, with the hysteria of the contemporary McCarthy trials made for powerful reactions across America. This is his play about the dignity of the private man and his need for honour at all costs. With film at 2.30pm – The Crucible (1996) Directed by Nicholas Hytner and starring Daniel Day Lewis and Winona Ryder.

BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE Our annual lecture coinciding with the start of Tolethorpe Theatre’s new season. Come and enjoy an unforgettable cast of characters in Shakespeare’s 1600 play about love and loss, greed and generosity, appearance and reality set in Venice. This is a play full of marvels and will involve you in Shylock’s plea for ‘justice’ as much as in Portia’s ardent definition of what justice actually means.
BY VICTOR HUGO This epic novel that includes the battle of Waterloo together with an intimate knowledge of the Paris sewers is the most vivid picture of France at the beginning of the Nineteenth Century. Come and meet the inflexible Inspector Javert and the gloriously courageous Jean Valjean who proves that love is always more powerful than fear.
‘THE SECRET AGENT’
BY JOSEPH CONRAD This 1907 novel deals with highly topical subjects...terrorism, espionage and corrupt politics. Here London is Conrad’s ‘heart of darkness’ and gradually the novel came to be considered one of his finest, with a prescient view of the Twenty First Century. With film at 2.30pm – The Secret Agent (1997) directed by Christopher Hampton and starring Patricia Arquette and Bob Hoskins. TUE 4 SEP 12.30PM

Why had Herman Goering chosen Burghley House to be his H.Q.?

may A DOLL’S HOUSE
A New Adaptation by Alice Knapton & Venetia Twigg
Based on HENRIK IBSEN’S classic tale Directed by Alice Sillett. Choreographed by Amy Lawrence Mr & Mrs Helmer are the iconic power couple. They excel at work, staying on top, socialising. They excel at excelling. But as his autobiography rolls out around Christmastime, it seems there are a few things that Mr. Helmer may not have mentioned in the foreword. Working with some of the UK’s leading Mental Health and Domestic Abuse charities, the show’s creators use Verbatim interviews and emotive Choreography to rocket Ibsen’s famous tale into a hugely relevant re-telling for modern audiences.
Exploring stigmas around gender expectations and mental health, this artful adaptation focuses on the impossible idolisation of one ‘perfect’ woman, by a man who walks with weights around his ankles.

KINDERTRANSPORT
by Diane Samuels by arrangement with Nick Hern Books Separated from her German Jewish parents at the age of nine, Eva is brought to England on the Kindertransport with the promise of a new life. Under the care of her kindly foster mother Lil, the young Eval slowly acclimatises to her new life and, at length, believing her parents to have perished in the camps, tries to re-invent herself as English. But memories and fears are not so easily erased. When her own daughter starts to question the story her mother has woven over the years, the protective shell that Eva, now calling herself Evelyn, has built around herself begins to crack. This modern classic about one woman’s struggle to come to terms with her past is told with tenderness and warmth, across the generations and the years. The issues explored remain as pertinent to us today as when the events of the late 1930’s unfolded in Germany and England. A performance by our resident amateur theatre company

‘ACROSS THE HIMALAYAS’ To Tibet’s sacred Mount Kailas
Journey with Tess up through north-west Nepal, following the beautiful Kanarli River, head-waters of the Ganges, with mules, monasteries and momos, through a land forgotten by time - much like the old Tibet. And over a remote Tibetan border, scarily guarded by 2017 modern China. Then onwards to the revered lake Manasarovar, nestled on the Tibetan plateau gateway to the kora of Mount Kailas. This mountain is said to be the heart of the Universe, the meeting point of Heaven and Earth, the home of the future Buddha the Mayatraya and believed to be filled with cosmic power. Starting with Stravinsky, diving back to the Medieval, motoring with Mozart (ignoring Beethoven) and ending up with the Bee Gees, In The Beginning Was The Sound is an informal and entertaining rollercoaster ride through the history of music. Decostruttori Postmodernisti are four young Italian professional musicians, featuring the otherworldly sound of the Theremin accompanied by piano, violin and cello alongside ukulele, melodica, kazoo, bird whistle and slide whistle (and sometimes in the same piece). They blend sharp technical skills with the verve of cabaret presenting well known pieces in the most unlikely and entertaining ways imaginable. Excitingly, this is their first UK tour! Andrew Motion’s prose memoir, In the Blood (2006), was widely acclaimed, praised as ‘an act of magical retrieval’ (Daily Telegraph) and ‘a hymn to familial love’ (Independent). Now having left the UK’s shores, Motion looks back once more to recreate a stunning biographical sequel but this time, in verse. Essex Clay rekindles, expands and gives a tragic resonance to subjects that have haunted Motion throughout his writing life. The poem’s wealth of physical detail and its narrative momentum make it as compelling as a fast-paced novel: a settling of accounts which admits that final resolutions are impossible. Andrew Motion was Poet Laureate from 1999 to 2009 and is co-founder of the online Poetry Archive; in 2015 he was appointed a Homewood Professor in the Arts at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. He has received numerous awards for his poetry, including most recently the Ted Hughes Award (2015), and has published four celebrated biographies, a novella, The Invention of Dr Cake (2003) and a memoir, In the Blood (2006). Andrew Motion was knighted for his services to poetry in 2009.

FOR THE JOURNEY & RETURN
Beatrice carved the Stamford Poetry Stone!
WITH THE ORKNEY BOAT This is the story of two North Sea crossings and Beatrice’s five hundred mile walk through Norway, from Oslo, over the Dovrefjell mountains and into Trondheim, harnessed to a forty kilo, beloved Orcadian rock. As we speed our ways through a built-up world, we often miss the potential that the landscape has to anchor and fortify us. The carving of the Orkney Boat and the journey made with it, is an artistic response to that lost experience. For The Journey and Return with The Orkney Boat was a public, performative art project and part of Magnus 900, a cultural programme that ran throughout 2017 to mark Magnus Erlendsson, 900 years after his death. The project was generously supported by the Orkney Islands Council, Orkney Arts, Museums and Heritage and 37 private donors. WED 20 JUN 8PM

QUENTIN CRISP: NAKED HOPE WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY MARK FARRELLY DIRECTED BY LINDA MARLOWE “Discover who you are. And be it - like mad!”
From a conventional Surrey upbringing to global notoriety via The Naked Civil Servant, Quentin Crisp was an extraordinary raconteur and wit. This much-acclaimed production, following a UK tour and off-West End season at the St. James Theatre, shows Quentin both in his beloved Chelsea flat as the 1970s dawned, and in his final years in his adopted New York, with the new millennium beckoning. Naked Hope is a glorious, uplifting celebration of the urgent necessity to be your true self, and a tribute to the courage of a true survivor. Mark Farrelly recently appeared at Leicester Square Theatre in his other hit solo show, The Silence of Snow: The Life of Patrick Hamilton. Other West End credits include Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? opposite Matthew Kelly. He is directed by the renowned EastEnders star Linda Marlowe, who has won awards for her own solo work such as Berkoff’s Women. ‘Farrelly’s mastery of his audience is total’ Time Out ‘Riveting and hysterically funny - a fantastic production’ British Theatre Guide ‘Brilliant’ The Stage 1 HOUR 10 MINS APPROX, NO INTERVAL FRI 22 JUN 8PM

CHANTRY DANCE COMPANY PRESENTS
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A DANCER ‘How do they do that?’ Is this something you’ve ever thought when watching a professional dancer perform? If so, we can answer that question and more for you! Join the Co-Artistic Directors of Chantry Dance Company and West End choreographers, Rae Piper and Paul Chantry, for a fascinating look at a day in the life of a professional dancer. Learn what it takes to become a dancer, how professional dancers maintain their fitness, keep strong and flexible, how they rehearse and how they create choreography for performance. Rae and Paul are among the UK’s finest and most experienced contemporary ballet dancers, as well as being international and West End choreographers responsible for award-winning shows including David William’s ‘Gangsta Granny’, operas, and numerous contemporary ballets. They will provide a true ‘behind the scenes’ look at what dancers do in their daily lives.
NotNowcollective presents
dadman: THE bath-time warrior
DadMan: The Bath-time Warrior deals with the surprise, shock and change brought on by the expectations of fatherhood, looking at issues of control and supervision from a fresh point of view. The show’s creators (two Croatian mothers who also run the show off-stage) we decided to challenge their own and society’s assumptions, generalisations and expectations of gender roles, and ask questions so many are often afraid to ask out loud. The show is performed by two men. They are genuine fathers, actors/musicians/stage-combat professionals react strongly to sweeping statements but are happy to turn them into a song and battle. Their objective? To unravel the bath-time in a surprising, unpredictable and completely new light! Are you a parent or carer with a young baby (under 2s)? This show’s designed for adults, but, we don’t want you to miss out, so feel free to bring a baby to the 1.30pm performance!
An event that any aspiring dancer, or anyone involved in dance, would not want to miss! Even if dance is not something you’ve previously had an interest in, this family friendly talk and dance demonstration is a great way to introduce yourself to the world of dance!

With Catherine Headley ‘What do you actually want to say in your art?’ Catherine encourages students to think for themselves. Her intention is to stimulate students’ insight and inventiveness; to guide them to combine imagination with observation and memory and so for each to pursue his/her personal voice. Promoting awareness of contemporary artists and past modern masters and the technical skills of mixing and applying paint, whatever medium, are very much part of the teaching. In preparation for painting it is suggested that students draw; in the landscape, garden or home. All abilities welcome, just bring an open mind. If you need to buy painting materials, contact Catherine for advice on what to purchase. headleyart@outlook.com
