Welcome to the 2017 series of

Music in Quiet Places! Our annual series takes in some of the most historic village churches in the area, some of which have been part of our landscape for over 1,000 years and are witnesses to many changes, social and political, over the centuries. We can’t offer such an historic spread of music but Alva’s programme includes songs that would have been heard in such settings in the medieval era. The first concert is given by Kosmos, making a welcome return with their exceptional musicianship and joyous performance. And we close with a similar combination, but in song and the voices of Apollo5. It is always good to hear the next generation of musicians and the Marmen Quartet and A4 Brass are two groups that are set firmly on the path to success. As always, we are grateful to the incumbents, churchwardens and congregations of the host churches without whose support these concerts could not take place. Refreshments will be available during concert intervals. These are provided by the churches, and the income goes to church funds. Seating in all churches is unreserved. It can also be hard so you may wish to bring a cushion or a rug with you. Car parking may be a short distance from the church. Please allow adequate time for parking, and be considerate to local residents. If you need any information about facilities or access, please contact the Box Office at Stamford Arts Centre (01780 763203).

Gypsy, Scottish, Jewish and Greek music glide effortlessly into hot-blooded tango and Japanese melody as Kosmos re-defines the relationship between classical and world music. Referencing classical composers including Brahms, Dvorak and Sarasate, the trio performs with ‘telepathic rapport, dazzling virtuosity, serious scholarship, intellectual curiosity and impeccable musicianship’ (The Times). Early booking advised – Kosmos’s previous Music in Quiet Places concert sold out fast! The slender spire of St Andrew’s soars 150 feet above the neighbouring fenland and is linked to the tower by delicate buttresses. Both church and tower are mainly 14th century with traces of earlier work in the south aisle. Inside, light streams through the 15th clerestory windows, illuminating the great arches below. Outstanding examples of Victorian craftsmanship are to be found in the restored chancel.

The Lark in the Morning English medieval and folk songs: A rich variety of street cries, tender love songs, lullabies, carols, spinechilling ballads and lively dances, spanning 800 years of English tradition Grammy-nominated vocalist Vivien Ellis is known for her gutsy, passionate and folk-edged performances of early music with groups such as The Dufay Collective and the Carnival Band. Versatile multi-instrumentalist Giles Lewin has played with folk luminaries Bellowhead and Maddy Prior, and on many film soundtracks, including Harry Potter and Robin Hood. As the duo Alva, they create surprising, original, entertaining and well-researched performances of music, song and spoken-word for unexpected places. Lying in the heart of the village, St Bartholomew’s dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. A church on the same site is recorded in the Domesday Book and these earlier origins are evident in the arches of the nave, the east window and fragments of medieval glass in the south aisle windows.

Quartet in G op. 77 no. 1 Quartet in F Quartet in A minor op. 51 no. 2

The Marmen Quartet is the current holder of Music in the Round’s prestigious ‘Bridge’ development award and has residencies with the Birmingham Conservatoire and the Salomon Smith Chamber Music Society in Malmö, Sweden. Ravel’s sumptuous Impressionistic quartet sits between two classical works, providing a fascinating insight into three centuries of music for this combination of instruments. St Firmin’s stands beside the Roman Carr Dyke and its massive Saxon tower suggests that its original purpose was defensive as well as religious. The church is cruciform in shape and the magnificent Norman work inside includes doorways, arches and the font.

This exciting group comprises principal players from some of the UK’s leading brass bands who met whilst studying at the Royal Northern College of Music. The quartet’s unique blend of instruments creates a distinctive sound that, with a mix of original music for the quartet and arrangements of classical and popular tunes, appeals to lovers of chamber and brass music alike. Set idyllically in peaceful pastures at the end of the long village street, St Swithin’s origins are monastic. A two-storey porch has a richly moulded inner doorway and a door dating to around 1200. There are also traces of wall paintings in the nave and a fine Jacobean pulpit and screen.

With a Song in My Heart Music from Monteverdi to Sondheim Charismatic British a cappella ensemble Apollo5 brings to life sacred choral music, spirituals, traditional melodies and jazz standards in a musical journey from the British Isles and beyond. As well as an extensive concert career in the UK and abroad, the group is heavily involved in education work as part of an international project to encourage creativity in children through music making. Set amidst graceful cedar trees St Michael’s has one of the finest collections of monuments in the county, many to former owners of nearby Grimsthorpe Castle. From fragments of a Saxon cross to the roof replaced in the 20th century, every century since its foundation is represented in the church.
