David Moore is a retired Methodist Minister who began carving aged 50. This quickly became a dominant feature in his life. He and Richard enjoy reworking biblical stories as a way of teasing out ideas. There is always a touch of humour and often a political edge. MON 6 - SUN 12 JUN

LITERATURE AT LUNCHTIME WITH DR JANE MACKAY 1984 BY GEORGE ORWELL

George Orwell’s ‘1984’. Orwell’s terrifying vision, written in 1948, about how totalitarianism might take over our decent British lives, scared a generation. In his novel Big Brother really is watching us and Room 101 is far more than a game show. Now that we are beyond that date, how much has his vision been accurate and how near are we to being controlled in thought and deed? Come and enjoy a journey into mind control...and wonder at Orwell’s prevision! Followed by a screening of the 1984 release of 1984 (15) starring John Hurt and Richard Burton. 1hr 50 mins approx. TUE 3 MAY Talk 12.30pm | Film 2.30pm THEATRE

ORLANDO BY VIRGINIA WOOLF

Orlando is one of Woolf’s strangest and most original works. It explores the nature of androgyny which fascinated her and which would, she hoped, free her from the terrible inhibitions of the need to be the ‘angel of the house’. Let’s explore her time-travelling as a multiple and complex self. Followed by a screening of the 1992 release of Orlando (PG) starring Tilda Swinton and Billy Zane.1 hr 33 mins approx. TUE 7 JUN Talk 12.30pm | Film 2.30pm THEATRE

GIGI BY COLETTE

Something light for summer...and yet not so light? One of the 20thC’s greatest French writers, Colette is exploring her own strange half-world of the ‘demi-monde’ in which she herself lived. Here a young Parisian girl is being brought up to be a welltrained mistress of a rich man. How will her own expectations be fulfilled? Followed by the 1958 release of Gigi (PG)starring Leslie Caron and Maurice Chevalier. 1hr 51mins approx. TUE 5 JUL Talk 12.30pm | Film 2.30pm THEATRE

THE TIME MACHINE BY H G WELLS

Although unsuccessfully nominated 4 times for the Nobel Prize for Literature, Wells’ influence in his time cannot be underestimated. He has been called our first science fiction writer and ‘The Time Machine’ is just the first of four SF novels which came out in the 1890s. Let’s explore his wonderful visionary world and marvel that we managed to ignore his clear warnings! Followed by the 1960 release of The Time Machine (PG) starring Rod Taylor and Alan Young. 1hr 30mins approx. TUE 6 SEP Talk 12.30pm | Film 2.30pm BALLROOM MAY - SEP

Stress is not an essential part of our life. Meditation can make the difference between a joyful, balanced, creative day and a day that is stressful and draining. Anyone can benefit from meditation techniques that are easy to learn and require only a few minutes of our time each day. The speaker is Buddhist nun Gen Nyingpo. Nyingpo has taught Buddhism and meditation internationally for 20 years. She demonstrates the benefits meditation can bring to our busy modern lives. This event complements our regular classes on Thursday afternoons and Friday evenings. FRI 6 MAY 7 - 8PM £6

INVINCIBLE

THEATRE

WRITTEN BY TORBEN BETTS. PRODUCED BY THE ORIGINAL THEATRE COMPANY AND THE THEATRE ROYAL BURY ST EDMUNDS. DIRECTED BY CHRISTOPHER HARPER. With the recession biting hard, Emily and Oliver have decided to downsize and shift their middle-class London lifestyle to a small town in the north of England. One night they open their doors and invite next door neighbours, Dawn and Alan into their home. Over the course of a disastrous evening of olives, anchovies, Karl Marx and abstract art; class and culture collide where the consequences are as tragic as they are hilarious. From one of the most exciting playwrights to emerge since Alan Ayckbourn, Torben Betts, and produced by the award-winning Original Theatre Company (Birdsong, Three Men In A Boat), comes a brand new production of the smash hit, sell-out comedy, Invincible. Meet Torben Betts, Invincible’s Stamford born playwright and screenwriter, after Saturday’s performance.

‘Not much theatre makes me laugh out loud continually but Invincible, a spiky new comedy of culture clash and embarrassment from Torben Betts, is a rare and cherishable example.’ Evening Standard FRI 6 8PM & SAT 7 MAY 7.30PM 2hours 15mins approx inc interval £14 (£12) £10 groups/students 1 free teacher’s place for every 10 students booked

THE PEASANTS’ REVOLT - WED 11 MAY 7.30PM What brought about the rising in June 1381? Why was the Revolt not restricted to the peasantry? While the immediate cause of the revolt was the imposition of a new poll tax, what were the underlying economic, social and political causes? Although their demands for the end of serfdom failed and the Revolt crushed, what were its long term consequences?

THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME – WED 15 JUN 7.30PM Even after a century the Battle of the Somme still remains the subject of controversy. Why was it fought? Why did the British high command continue with the battle despite 60,000 casualties on the first day? Was it a case of ‘Lions led by donkeys’? Did it serve a strategic purpose? MAY - JUN £5 (£4)

BEAU BRUMMELL – AN ELEGANT MADNESS

It is the winter of 1819. The most stylish man of his day may still be more interested in cuffs, collars and creases than matters of life and death but now he lives in a madhouse in Calais with his valet, determined to relive past glories. George Bryan Brummell, known as Beau, is convinced that once the Prince of Wales (now King George IV) hears of and sees his plight he will be restored to his former glory and position in court. Today the Prince is coming to Calais! Written by Emmy Award winning writer Ron Hutchinson.

‘Sean Brosnan mesmerises as the Beau. A spectacle both ludicrous and touching due to Peter Craze’s adroit direction’ - Time Out ‘Full of witty aphorisms. As Beau Brummell, Sean Brosnan is haughty, cool, racked with impotent rage and convincingly mad. His coarse-grained valet, played by Richard Latham, excites more sympathy.’ - The Stage

The new musical based on one of the world’s favourite fairy-tales, Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling. Ugly is born, of course, as a Duckling but is soon becomes clear that he is no ordinary Duck. Mocked on the farmyard, pursued by the ever-hungry Cat, Ugly finds himself lost on a nearby marsh in the middle of a duck-shoot and embarks on an odyssey through the countryside, meeting a battery of colourful characters and finding himself, and love, along the way. With a tuneful score, witty lyrics and book, Honk! confirms that Drewe and Stiles are the brightest hopes for the future of the British musical. DANCE/GRAVITY FIELDS THEATRE

This extraordinary ballet combines an exciting original soundtrack with contemporary ballet danced by an exceptional international cast. Through the fascinating choreography the dancers interpret cosmic events, from the evolution of a star to the formation of a deadly black hole.

Inspired by the concept of Game Theory and the theme of equality, ‘The Stacked Deck’ is a contemporary ballet based on a combative game of cards which four players are all desperate to win.
