LITERATURE AT LUNCHTIME WITH DR JANE MACKAY
WIDE SARGASSO SEA A MIDSUMMER BY JEAN RHYS NIGHT’S DREAM Rhys’ masterpiece was published BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
THE SIGN OF FOUR
to great acclaim in 1966. As a child in the West Indies Rhys had been captivated by Bronte’s ‘Jane Eyre’ and by the character of Rochester’s mad Jamaican wife. Out of that obsession comes this wonderful novel, full of the sense of a wilder, more lush world.
Shakespeare’s summer romp and our annual lecture in support of Stamford Shakespeare Company’s 2017 programme. One of the most popular of the Bard’s ‘alchemical’ plays, come and enjoy magic, fairies, romance and the perfect resolution of love’s problems.
BY SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE Doyle wrote many works featuring Sherlock Holmes. This sinister short story grew out of a conversation Doyle had with Oscar Wilde about how to depict evil... Wilde went home and wrote ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ and Doyle produced ‘The Sign of Four’. Come and have fun with Sherlock.

Harald Hardrada ‘The Last Viking’ The exploits of Harald Sigurdsson, called Hardrada (Hard ruler), King of Norway were the stuff of legend and were recorded in the Icelandic Sagas. His exile in Kiev and Byzantium, his return and rule of Norway, and his invasion of England warrant him the title of ‘The Thunderbolt of the North’. He was ‘the last Viking’. Wed 10 May 7.30pm Al Capone and Prohibition Prohibition, the so-called ‘Noble Experiment’, sought to rid the United States of alcohol between 1920 and 1933. The career of Al Capone, the most famous of the Chicago gangsters, was the product of Prohibition together with the American political system from which it arose. What combination of factors led to the introduction of Prohibition and why did it fail? Are there lessons to be learned today? Wed 7 June 7.30pm

EVERY WILD BEAST/ NIGHT CREATURE DOUBLE BILL
RGS (with IBG) Presents
Benedict Allen
EVERY WILD BEAST
‘Adventures in Paradise’ With his usual good humour and enthusiasm, Benedict reveals the full story of his dramatic return to Papua New Guinea (recently featured in an inspiring BBC 2 series) - through the swamps with Frank Gardner, the distinguished BBC Security Correspondent, in search of the island’s elusive birds of Paradise.
The stars are empty, the moon has fallen from the sky and the mountains are full of monsters. Barri collects newspaper clippings and listens to vinyl in her grandmother’s attic. Sam is trying to outrun a community support officer investigating the murder of several domestic badgers. Weaved from folklore and fable EVERY WILD BEAST tells a tale about courage, curiosity and running away from really big scary things. This is not a love story, this is an adventure.
Author, adventurer and film-maker, Benedict Allen is the only person known to have crossed the Amazon Basin at its widest, arguably no one alive has lived so long isolated and alone in so many potentially hostile remote environments.
NIGHT CREATURE
His ventures include the first documented journey of the length of the Namib Desert, and likewise he is the only person known to have crossed the full width of the Gobi with camels alone. His journeys are depicted in his ten books - including two best sellers – six BBC television series, as well as other ground-breaking series for National Geographic TV, The History Channel and Channel Five.

Joelle Taylor with Charley Genever (supporting) A fusion of poetry and spoken word; a journey through the council estates of the UK, via deserted tower blocks and back street parties, through to immigration centres in coastal towns and broken backed sofas where everything you have ever lost will be returned to you. This is a powerful spoken word performance about resilience, survival and tiny rebellions that quietly change the world.
‘Joelle Taylor’s a shape-shifter, myth maker, linguistic risk taker; poetical activist, surrealist with a raised fist’ - Patience Agbabi ‘In these times of austerity, hypocrisy, political corruption, and mindless reality television, we need poetry like this. Joelle Taylor does not mess about. Her poetry is fearless.’ - Benjamin Zephaniah ‘A city gritty heart beaten tattoo’ - John Hegley Charley Genever is best known as Peterborough Poet Laureate 2016. Living and working from Peterborough, she has performed for organisations across the country, including Verve Poetry Festival, Cambridge Junction, Apples and Snakes, The Poetry Society and Southbank Centre.

Afternoon Tea with Wendy Cope
La Clemenza di Tito
Plus book signing A completely fresh and entertaining setting for a poetry reading from the quiet phenomenon who has proved quality can be popular! The idea of a slightly seditious but seriously good ironic moan about life’s little irritations over a bickie and a cuppa with Wendy has proved unfailingly popular. Wendy reads a hilariously dissatisfied and ironic set either side of the tea….with a question and answer session to round off the event, plus an ever popular after-show book signing.
Glyndebourne Spurned by Tito, Vitellia seeks revenge. Besotted Sesto agrees to avenge her as a token of his love, but all does not go to plan. A brand new take on one of Mozart’s final works. Vitellia’s path to the throne is thwarted by the man who deposed her father, so she presses her admirer Sesto to murder him. Driven by love, Sesto does his worst. But in return, receives a lesson in forgiveness. Conducted by Robin Ticciati and directed by Claus Guth, Mozart’s opera delivers all of the sublime musical beauty and heart-tugging humanity we expect of him.
Titus Andronicus
RSC Live The decay of Rome reaches violent depths in Shakespeare’s most bloody play. Titus is a ruler exhausted by war and loss, who relinquishes power but leaves Rome in disorder. Rape, cannibalism and severed body parts fill the moral void at the heart of this corrupt society. Shakespeare’s gory revenge tragedy presents us with murder as entertainment, and, as the body count piles up, poses questions about the nature of sexuality, family, class and society. Blanche McIntyre returns to the RSC to direct Shakespeare’s brutal revenge tragedy after her debut directing The Two Noble Kinsmen (2016).

Stamford Shoestring Theatre and Stamford Arts Centre Presents
The Memory of Water
By Shelagh Stephenson At the heart of this bittersweet, life affirming play, which won the Laurence Olivier Award for best comedy in 2000, lies the age old tradition at family gatherings of recollecting stories, bound by love, laughter, anger, and tears. The reunion in this play occurs as three estranged sisters and their partners gather at the home of their recently dead mother for her funeral and revisit the past in a poignant and often hilarious manner. The sisters’ memories - recalled as they are in all their inaccuracies, show that despite synchronicities of time and place the people involved in the incidents of the past cannot agree on the facts of a unified experience. A production by our resident amateur theatre company presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd. Contains limited smoking and some strong language. Tue 12 - Sat 16 Sep 7.45pm

Contemporary Painting
With Catherine Headley “What do you actually want to say in your art?” Catherine encourages students to think for themselves. Her intention is to stimulate students’ insight and inventiveness; to guide them to combine imagination with observation and memory and so for each to pursue his/her personal voice. Promoting awareness of contemporary artists and past modern masters and the technical skills of mixing and applying paint, whatever medium, are very much part of the teaching. In preparation for painting it is suggested that students draw; in the landscape, garden or home. All abilities welcome, just bring an open mind. Resident artist Catherine Headley runs the art class Contemporary Painting on Tuesday mornings. She encourages her students to be self-searching and innovative in pursuit of their individual forms of expression. Her mantra, ‘What do you want to say in your art?’ Catherine will be exhibiting some of her own work alongside that of her students in what promises to be an exciting and diverse show. Tue 16 – Sun 28 May
Odyssey
Arts Space Loughborough Artists from the group Artspace Loughborough have put together an exhibition on the theme of ‘Odyssey’. Each artist has responded differently, and with varied media, to the idea of an epic journey. There are actual journeys, such as photos from a train window in India, mixed media work of narrow boat journeys in central England, paintings representing Australian aboriginal songlines, and paintings of a travelling circus. Other work has a more metaphorical quality: the artist’s own journey to find meaning. Sat 3 – Sun 18 Jun
Journeys
