a place to stay Establishments featured in this guide have been officially inspected by the AA, or Quality in Tourism (QIT).

Some properties are currently awaiting inspection and their commitment to quality is highlighted by ‘inspection pending’. The quality of accommodation, rather than just the facilities on offer, comes under the spotlight in the national grading scheme of the QIT and AA. These organisations jointly ensure their inspectors assess accommodation to the same consistently high standards. Accommodation taking part in the scheme is visited every year and awarded an official rating.

Hotels Hotels are given a rating from one to five stars. One star means an acceptable level of quality, services and range of facilities. The more stars awarded, the higher the quality and range of facilities and service on offer.

Guest Accommodation This includes inns, guesthouses, B&Bs and farmhouses. These are awarded one to five stars. The more stars awarded, the higher the quality of cleanliness, hospitality, bedrooms, bathrooms and food standards.

Special Accolades In addition to the grading scheme, the QIT and AA each have their own special awards given to accommodation that meets the highest standards of quality in specific areas. Gold and Silver awards are given by the QIT to accommodation which meets the highest levels of quality in areas which guests say are important.

Gourmet Breakfast New for 2010 – given to hotels and B&Bs with high scores for breakfast.

Families Walkers Cyclists Welcome Welcome Welcome Self-Catering These properties are awarded from one to five stars depending on the level and quality of facilities offered.

Enjoy England Excellence Gold Award

Camping and Caravan Parks These are given a rating from one to five stars depending on the quality of service, cleanliness, environment and facilities.

Welcome Host A nationally recognised customer care initiative which aims to promote the highest standards of service and a warm welcome for all visitors.

Tastes of Lincolnshire Where locally produced foods are used and enjoyed. Prices Prices shown for accommodation such as hotels and guest houses are for ‘the lowest price single room to the highest price double room’, per night, including breakfast unless stated otherwise. Self-catering prices shown are for ‘low season to high season’, per unit, per week. Prices and facilities can change, so please check when you book. You will usually need to confirm your booking in writing and you may be asked for a deposit, so do ask for the booking conditions and cancellation policy before sending a deposit. Complaints If you have a complaint, it’s always best to first talk to the accommodation owner who will usually do their best to resolve any problems. Properties inspected by the QIT or AA have an official complaints procedure to follow. Further advice available from Stamford Tourist Information Centre.

Described at ‘the finest stone town in England by Sir Walter Scott.

Stamford’s stone heritage has drawn accolades over the centuries – and tourists from far and wide. Its unique blend of history, niche shopping, stunning architecture and an over-riding sense of community even won the supreme compliment from the Sunday Times Newspaper as ‘Britain’s top place to live’ (March 2013). With over 600 listed buildings of mellow limestone there is so much to explore in the UK’s first conservation town. Stamford is unusual in having whole streets entirely made up of Georgian houses, yet vibrant with modern life, and it’s an architectural legacy which has drawn innumerable film companies for classics such as Pride and Prejudice and Middlemarch. Now in more modern times it’s the stage for a fabulous Georgian festival which recreates the bustle and feel of the Georgian period over a weekend-long programme of events, organised by South Kesteven District Council. A vibrant Friday street market epitomises all that’s best about market towns, stretching along Broad Street, Ironmonger Street, and into the High Street. And the regular farmers’

market offers produce traceability and a sales outlet for local food producers. On a daily basis Stamford’s eating houses, pubs and food speciality shops make its winding streets a voyage of gastronomic discovery. Its historic core is a perfect backdrop for businesses and niche retailers alike. It boasts world-class watchmakers, award winning food producers, an independent brewery and a thriving cafe culture. Stamford Arts Centre, built in 1768, is one of the oldest provincial theatres in England, and is a thriving focal point for arts and cinema and houses the Tourist Information Centre. Local people and visitors alike benefit from a wealth of attractions on the town’s doorstep including Rutland Water to the west, one of Europe’s largest reservoirs and

now a haven for fishing, cycling, sailing and wildlife, historic houses like Grimsthorpe Castle and Burghley House, and rolling countryside with picturesque villages all round.

Gravity Fields Festival 24th – 28th September 2014

For more information, visit: www.gravityfields.co.uk It will include a dynamic and creative programme of science, arts and heritage events – supported by South Kesteven District Council.

Mentioned as a Royal Manor in the Domesday Book, Grantham has come a long way since the days when it was known as a stopping place for kings and nobleman.

The Angel and Royal Hotel, originally a court of King John, still takes pride of place in the High Street but over the years the town has expanded and developed and is now home to many shops, indoor shopping centres and a bustling Saturday street market. There’s also a whole host of dining experiences from Michelin rated Harry’s Place just outside the town to Bombay Brasserie, a winner in the East Midlands Food Awards best Indian category, as well as a wide range of other top quality restaurants to suit all tastes. With a population of over 40,000, the town has managed to retain its character but also move with the times. At the heart of Grantham is the parish church of St Wulfram’s with its soaring 282ft spire – one of the most important town churches in England – and the Guildhall houses a lively arts centre and tourist information centre. Showing great innovation South Kesteven District Council launched the Gravity Fields Festival in 2012 to celebrate the life and discoveries of Sir Isaac Newton – who was

born locally at Woolsthorpe Manor– with a bi-ennial arts and science extravanganza putting Grantham on both national and international maps. More recently, Britain’s first woman Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher was born in the town and Britain’s first policewoman served here.

from championship standard 18 hole golf courses to smaller rural courses, impressive castles and homes, and unrivalled countryside for walking, riding and cycling. There’s also the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of festivals and events covering everything from theatre through to music and art.

Grantham has a wonderful choice of places to visit as well as a selection of splendid parks and open spaces for people to spend their leisure time.

All that’s left is to find is a great place to stay to savour all that the area has to offer. And we have plenty of those too. From hotels to coaching inns, b & b’s, to guest houses, farmhouses to self catering accommodation, we have something to suit every taste.

On its doorstep are lots of local attractions including Belton House, Belvoir Castle, the seat of the Duke and Duchess of Rutland, Grimsthorpe Castle and Burghley House near Stamford, home of the famous horse trials. On top of that the area boasts one of the best leisure facilities in the East Midlands and has a wealth of other attractions

Bourne of today is known worldwide for its motor racing connections but its roots go back to the Roman invasion. The red brick town at the foot of the limestone hills of Kesteven owes its origin to the Roman road upon which it was built – and its name to its fine quality water.
