CHRISTMAS 2010
DEAR SANTA CHRISTMAS ISLAND CHRISTMAS
150TH MELBOURNE CUP
STAMP PO0L1L0 2
Dear Collectors Welcome to the final edition of the Bulletin for 2010 and my first as Manager of Philatelic. Over the past few years I have looked after the Australian Stamp Issue Program and its related products, as well as managing the various marketing activities and promotions for the group. I look forward to my new role with enthusiasm and welcome the opportunity it affords me in getting to know our many collectors, dealers and general stamp enthusiasts. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Noel Leahy for his contribution to the philatelic business and the development of a team of very talented and professional people. The group I have inherited includes designers and product developers that will continue to push Australian stamps into the forefront of the philatelic world and I view the future with excitement, but first we need to get ready for the coming holiday season and view the remaining issues of 2010.

One of the final stamp issues for this year captures our sporting spirit and goes toward identifying who we are as a nation. The Melbourne Cup is an Australian event that also invites international interest and is rightly tagged as “the race that stops the nation”. The race itself only runs for around three minutes, but the excitement begins to build when the Spring Carnival is launched and continues right up until the release of the barrier on the first Tuesday in November. On the day of the Cup, if you aren’t attending, you will probably be watching and checking to see where you came in the sweep! This year we celebrate 150 years of the Melbourne Cup with four stamps, including one which features an illustration of the new cup with the remaining three stamps presenting some of the champions of this famous event. Whilst Christmas holds traditional celebrations for many and a traditional Christmas stamp issue, the magic of the season comes to life for children when they write their letters to Santa with promises of good intentions and an expectation of the gifts to be received. Our Dear Santa stamp issue illustrates the importance to children of this simple task. With some of the things listed, it’s a wonder that sleigh ever gets off the ground. For those with a liking for our Christmas Island stamp designs there will be two new Christmas stamps released. This edition brings you the 2010 Collection of Australian Stamps and the 2010 Territories Collection of Stamps − a gift for any occasion. Why not grab one for yourself and one for a friend. This beautifully presented book is a delight to read and a valuable collecting resource. You will also find an invitation for Australian residents to participate in our annual Stamp Poll with your copy of the Bulletin. There’s a great prize to be won and the chance to have your say about Australian stamp designs and subjects, so I encourage all of you to enter.

60c ......... 150th Melbourne Cup 60c ......... Carbine 1890 60c ......... Phar Lap 1930 60c ......... Saintly 1996 Issue Highlights This issue is accompanied by a prestige booklet featuring the stamps of this issue in blocks of four plus past stamps produced by Australia Post that depict Melbourne Cup winners.
The Melbourne Cup has been raced annually at Flemington Racecourse since 1861. Its popularity arose from the handicap conditions in a race run over two miles for horses of at least three years of age. At the race’s establishment, some claimed its handicap conditions would encourage mediocrity on the track. How wrong they were, for the Melbourne Cup soon became the centrepiece of the Australian racing calendar and it has long since been known as “the race that stops a nation”. By the early 1880s, it attracted around one-third of Melbourne’s population at the time. Today, it draws a capacity crowd of 120,000 on the first Tuesday of each November, while several million others follow the race on television screens around the nation. It is a special Australian celebration at race meetings, parties and work breaks around the nation. The three winners featured in the stamp issue span the history of the Cup. Carbine was the 1890 winner and one of Australia’s greatest racehorses ever. Setting a weight record for the race, and in the fastest time to that date, he symbolised strength and courage. In 1930, Phar Lap lifted the spirits of a nation feeling the malaise of the Great Depression. The big chestnut survived an attempt on his life in the week prior to his Melbourne Cup triumph, and died amid controversy following his Agua Caliente Handicap win in 1932.

Saintly galloped to victory over a strong field in 1996. Bred, trained and part owned by Bart Cummings, Saintly is well connected with the man who has dominated the modern era of the Melbourne Cup and known as the “Cups King” for his unrivalled 12 wins. The other stamp in the issue features the Melbourne Cup. In 2010, the design and size of “loving cup” returns to James Steeth’s 1930 design for the revered sporting trophy.

Issue Highlights There is a prestige first day cover with decoration, two embellished sheetlets of 10 and a design in the gutter of the stamp sheet.
In the weeks leading up to Christmas, Australian children write letters to Father Christmas, or Santa Claus, requesting what they would like for Christmas. Santa enjoys reading the letters, often ho-hoing over his correspondents’ requests. On receiving these letters Santa makes a list of the presents he will bring to children throughout the world in time for the Christmas festivities. We like to think of Santa as a plump, jolly white-bearded man attired in a red coat with white collar and cuffs. This image of Santa has its origins in nineteenth-century United States of America. The origins of Father Christmas, however, may be traced back to much earlier times. The primary inspiration for Santa Claus is the fourth-century Greek Christian bishop St Nicholas, who was famous for giving gifts to the poor.

Originally St Nicholas’ feast day was celebrated on the 6 December, and was marked by exchanging presents. In the sixteenth and seventeenth century the date was changed and Christmas Eve became the time for gift-giving in European countries. Today St Nicholas is the patron saint of the Dutch and Russian capitals, Amsterdam and Moscow.

CHRISTMAS ISLAND CHRISTMAS 1 NOVEMBER 2010
1661002 First day cover
60c ......... Golden Bosunbird $1.30...... Hoya vine & Ridley’s Orchid
In 2010 we continue our light-hearted Christmas Island Christmas series, with Rob Kiely again applying his brush to the subject, linking aspects of the island’s natural heritage to the tropical Christmas theme. In the 60-cent stamp design, the Golden Bosunbird (Phaethon lepturus) surveys the island from above to find a place at which to deliver its Christmas gift. Elsewhere known as the White-tailed Tropicbird, this seabird has a distinguishing golden hue to its plumage. A black streak extends across each eye, and it has black bars on its upper wings, but its long golden tail makes it most distinctive. The $1.30 stamp design continues the narrative of the Christmas gift delivery. In the foreground sits a gift bound with the vine Hoya aldrichii and the Ridley’s Orchid, Brachypeza archytas, the Bosunbird has carried in its beak. The hoya vine has clusters of small pink flowers. Ridley’s Orchid grows low on the trunks of large trees on Christmas Island, with stems of around 15–30 centimetres.

CHRISTMAS 2010 1 NOVEMBER 2010 55c ......... Madonna and child $1.30...... Angel and shepherds
1662002 First day cover
Christmas celebrates the anniversary of the birth of Jesus in the town of Bethlehem over two millennia ago. Today this Christian feast day is marked by church-going, festivities, present-giving, special meals and the wish for peace on Earth. Bruce Goold’s illustrations tell the familiar Christmas story. When Jesus was born, an angel told the good news to shepherds tending their flocks. On hearing the news the shepherds went to Bethlehem to see the newborn babe. Three wise men, bearing gifts, also came from the East to visit the baby Jesus. Goold’s artwork captures the essence of the Christmas story. He depicts the baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling cloth laying in a manger, normally used for feeding animals, surrounded by his parents, Mary and Joseph. The artwork also shows the angel announcing to the shepherds the good news that Christ the Lord has been born in Bethlehem.

TALKING STAMPS WITH RICHARD BRECKON
The Melbourne Cu Cup u on stamps up The 1960 five e (5d) ( five pence stamp 00 h running i issued to mark the 100th of the Melbourne Cup involved considerable controversy. The suggestion to honour the event came from the Victoria Racing Club. After some resistance associated with concerns about gambling, the Post Office agreed to a stamp. When the Melbourne Cup stamp was issued, there were the expected objections and some religious leaders even called for the stamp to be withdrawn from sale or for public boycotting. The stamp was designed by Frank Manley, who had recently retired as chief artist/engraver at the Note Printing Branch and had joined the Post Office’s Stamp Advisory Committee. Manley’s design depicted Archer and jockey John Cutts (the winning combination of the first two Cups), and a representation of the race trophy. The 1978 Horse Racing stamp issue featured four famous racehorses, including Pharlap and Peter Pan, chosen in consultation with racecaller Bill Collins OAM (1928–1997). The stamps were the first to be designed by Brian Clinton, one of Australia’s most prolific stamp designers. Perhaps the most legendary and charismatic horse in Australian racing, Phar Lap won the 1930 Melbourne Cup. Starting the race as an 11/8 favourite, he became the shortest priced winner in the Cup’s history. Peter Pan won in 1932 after almost falling and would also win the 1934 Cup in
particul cularly poor weather by three particularly l h The jockey in 1934 was lengths. Darby Munro, who was depicted on the 22c stamp in the 1981 Sports Personalities issue. Munro also rode Cup winners Sirius (1944) and Russia (1946). The 1978 Horse Racing stamps proved popular with the racing fraternity and supplies of 35c, 50c and 55c stamps were inadequate necessitating a reprint of all three. (It is unusual for non-definitive stamps to be reprinted.) Following the launch of Australia’s Racing Hall of Fame in 2001, Australia Post issued Champions of the Turf in 2002, comprising five 45c stamps featuring horses that were inducted into the Hall of Fame that year: Wakeful, Rising Fast, Manikato, Might and Power, and Sunline. The stamp illustrations, the work of Otto Schmidinger, depicted different moments in a race, and convey the speed, colour, energy and atmosphere of a race meeting. Two of these horses were Melbourne Cup winners, these being Rising Fast and Might and Power. In 1954 Rising Fast won the Caulfield Cup, the WS Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup, making it the only horse in race history to win the treble in the same year. The 2007 Australia Post Australian Legends celebrated six greats of horse racing – Scobie Breasley AM, Bart Cummings AM, Roy Higgins MBE, Bob Ingham AO, George Moore OBE and John Tapp OAM.

Jockey Roy Higgins rode two Melbourne Cup winners – Light Fingers (1965) and Red Handed (1967). Light Fingers is depicted on one of the two 2007 Legends stamps issued for Higgins. With the 2010 150th Melbourne Cup stamp issue three Cup winners have been honoured, two of them never having appeared on a stamp before – Carbine (1890), Phar Lap (1930) and Saintly (1996). Phar Lap’s bloodline can be traced back to Carbine through both his sire (father) and dam (mother). Although Saintly was one of 12 Cup wins for Bart Cummings, the horse is the trainer’s most beloved. Featured stamps (left to right) 1960 5d 100th Melbourne Cup 2002 45c Rising Fast 1981 22c Darby Munro 1978 50c Phar Lap 2007 50c Bart Cummings (holding Cup) 2007 55c Roy Higgins (riding Light Fingers)
